Ford Smith Fine Art, gallery/artist. www.fordsmithfineart.com 980A Canton St, Roswell, GA 678-908-1989 For more than a dozen years, world-class and critically-acclaimed landscape artist, Ford Smith, continues to be both an innovator and institution for the Atlanta art scene. Represented by fine art galleries from New York to Beijing, this artist-owned namesake gallery in Ford’s hometown of

Roswell, Georgia features new original paintings directly from his studio, alongside premier hand-painted editions. Ford Smith is widely recognized for reinventing the modern landscape. His sense of nature is not a Romantic’s wild and angry universe. To the contrary, his paintings reflect a palpable optimism and vibrant confidence. The easy precision, subtlety and repose of his paintings are likely derived from an Asian aesthetic learned from an elderly Japanese master in Ford’s early years while his military family was stationed overseas. Fantastical trees, light and fractured reflections are classic Ford Smith, however, his talent and imagination often take him in new directions with subject matter, technique and palette. In his own Roswell gallery you’ll find them all. From trademark mosaic landscapes to seascapes, Bloomscapes, Human Nature, Splash, Mono-

chromes, and introducing his new and transformative Iridescent Series--paintings that visually transform with varying viewing angles. Ford Smith Fine Art visitors receive a personal, in-depth experience of Ford’s artistic genius and feel the untethered nature of the art that comes with having this dedicated exhibit. 3. Synergy Fine Art, gallery. www.synergyfineart.com 26 Webb St, Suite 3, Roswell, GA 770-708-7416 Synergy Fine Art represents local artists of distinction with some of the most exciting original and innovative works of art in: abstraction, photography, GeoCubism, still life, and impressionism. artists of this period were avid horticulturists as was Claude Monet, the most important painter of gardens in the history of art. “I owe it to flowers that I became a painter.” Claude Monet Georgia O’Keefe, best known for her abstracted flower studies, aimed to make the viewer really look at the flower. “Most people in the city rush around so, they have no time to look at a flower. I want them to see it whether they want to or not.” Georgia O’Keefe

Flowers and Gardens August 4 - 27, 2016 311 Gallery It’s high summer and gardens are in full bloom. You have to love the summer garden with all its bright colors and heavenly smells, even the weeds look pretty when they flower. Flowers have played a role in most art forms, provoking emotions and as gestures of sentiment. With a Google search, you can uncover lists of flowers and their historic meanings, their use in folklore and fairy lore, and numerous quotes by famous artists and writers. In early Western Art History flowers provided a rich visual symbolism for understanding God’s Holy Word. The lowly dandelion, symbolic of innocence and nostalgia ranks with the white lily and the rose. Moving toward the Impressionists, gardens gave artists the freedom to experiment with composition and color. Many

Abstract Art Interpretations Perhaps no other genre of artwork carries with it so much conversation as Abstract Art. Reasons for this are abundant, however one theme is a constant in Abstract Art discussions, interpretation. The intrigue of Abstract Art is the cliche adage “beauty is in the eye of the beholder”. Through colors, lines, and context, viewers of Abstract Art interpret artworks in ways that differentiate each work of art for each viewer. Perhaps no other genre of art creates this personal level of artistic interaction between the creator of a piece of art and the viewer. This personal level of interaction that stems from each interpretation creates an everlasting personal monologue within the viewer that accentuates artistic appreciation whether the viewer know it or not. Below we have highlighted two Abstract artists whose works we hope create such interaction and appreciation through interpretation. Enjoy! 1. Maureen Engle, artist. Roswell, GA. www.maureenengle-art.com. engleartist@gmail.com. Born in the Berkshires, Maureen Engle graduated from the University of Virginia and then spent a year in Provence, France. There, she furthered her studies in art and began to experiment with a loose and fresh approach to painting. Maureen moved to the Atlanta area in 1995 and has never left. Maureen is passionate about color and its ability to convey energy and emotion and is well known for her contemporary and expressive work. Trees and nature scenes are one of her favorite subjects which she first studies and then paints from memory experimenting with various moods and

colors. She works to continually abstract her subject, letting the painting tell her where it wants to go. Maureen specializes in original artwork for residential and commercial spaces and has done numerous commissions for the lobbies of health centers, banks, offices, and country clubs. A full time artist in her Roswell studio and popular instructor, she has taught brush and palette knife painting for over 15 years at Atlanta area art schools. 2. Don Mertz, artist. Cary, NC dmertz@nc.rr.com 919-434-7040 Don Mertz, award-winning abstract artist, moved to Cary, North Carolina after living in New York City for 25 years. His path to becoming an artist was a slow one. After a childhood in a small Pennsylvanian town, he attended the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, planning to become a cartoonist or commercial artist. Soon sensing that was not the right artistic path for him, Mertz made a seemingly more practical choice, joined the Marines, and then entered Corporate America. Years later, while living in New York City with easy exposure to many genres of art he was increasingly inspired to become what he always wanted to be -- an artist. Don’s first serious foray into art began with studies at The International Center for Photography, culminating in a semi-solo show, Close to a Woman, at the Soho Gallery in NYC. Soon he ventured into creating abstract art, including collage and works on paper, in addition to acrylics and mixed media on canvas. Since moving to North Carolina, his works have been in many juried and solo shows. Most recently, he had a Solo Exhibition of 22 paintings from “The White Series” at The Durham Art Guild in North Carolina.
