Art of Gift Giving: Gifts of Art As we approach the holiday season we all find ourselves in the same satisfying time of year when we have to plan gift giving. What to buy, how to plan the wants versus the needs, what someone wants but does not need, what somewhat needs but does not want is always a difficult time. However once we find that perfect gift the rewards of our diligent hard work pays off with happiness and joy of the receiver. The Art of Gift Giving is an intricate and intimate process and experience. The intimacy and personal connection a gift giver instills with the gift receiver is very similar to the intimate and personal experience one receives from an artist when purchasing a work of art. What better way to combine the two experiences and purchase a work of art as a gift! Small works are a perfect gift for anyone interested in the visual arts. Books, clothes, and electronics are great assem-

bly line produced products that others certainly have. Art however is a unique gift where each piece is one-of-a-kind. The selection of art is a personal endeavor, delving into the personality and characteristics of the receiver. The personal nature of art as a gift is sure to be wildly received and appreciated. Small works are easy to purchase and easy to receive. There’s no need to redo an entire room to make space for a small painting; they are a perfect gift that can fit anywhere. The simplest of small works, irrespective of content and colors can remake an entire room and add tranquility to any space. For practicality and a personal touch The Art of Gift Giving should always include a Gift of Art! Check out the great artists and galleries on the next page and find your next gift!

Introducing a revolution Your personal art app “As an artist I need the time to create, and it’s important for me to meet and talk to each person that shows interest in my work. This app does just that. It’s allowed me to clone myself”. Darius Quarles, artist, Durham, NC

artGuide Magazine is excited to introduce Auger, a company that we will be partnering with in the coming months who are revolutionizing the way the art world communicates with patrons. Auger is a new technology company based in North Carolina that is building custom mobile phone applications for the art world. Mobile apps are the new websites, providing seamless, mobile interactive platforms that websites cannot. Auger’s new technological feat in mobile applications provides new scanning technology, analytics, direct conduit marketing, and augmented reality in customizable apps for artists, galleries, museums, art walks, public art installations, and art publications at a tiny fraction of the cost of creating their own mobile app. Auger’s mobile application contains multiple features and creative ways to use them. Some of our favorites include allowing artists, curators, and gallerists the opportunity to discuss their art and provide docent tours virtually on anyone’s mobile phone. Another revolutionary and inno-

vative feature is allowing any mobile app user to view artwork through their mobile phones anywhere, on any wall in scale, via 3D augmented reality. Other amazing features include an archival tool for storing entire bodies of work; cutting-edge art marketing with interactive talking publications, show cards, and posters; and analytics that allow you to gauge the reaction of your viewers. Whether you are an art publication, artist, gallery, public art installation, a museum, or an art walk, Auger’s mobile app will provide you with direct conduit marketing, real time feedback, and a much deeper relationship with your patrons. In the coming months artGuide will be featuring all the exciting functions of Auger’s new mobile app. For questions about how you can have your own custom app or how your app can revolutionize the way you communicate with your audience please go to: Website: www.artguidemag.com/yourapp Email Sandra@augerlabs.com

“Revolutionary! As someone who has been involved in promoting the visual arts for many years I recognize the importance of technology in marketing art. This innovative application will revolutionize how we interact and experience art.” Thomas Gilanyi, Founder, artGuide Magazine

With your personal app collectors can access your art directly through their mobile phones as well as by scanning your artwork in artGuide Magazine ads - see below: To get a sneak peak of how the app is working for one artist, download “SandraElliottArt” in the App Store or Google Play and use the Magnifying Glass on your mobile phone to scan her piece of art below.

The End of the Year is “Present”! 311 Gallery December 1-24, 2016 “One of the great things about the traditions of holiday gift giving is that they allow us to take the time to focus on our friends and family—to focus on what makes them special and what makes them special to us. Finding that special gift that will light up the face of a friend or family member is itself one of life’s greatest gifts that we can give to ourselves.” Allen Clapp, artist and owner of 311 Gallery. Remember that the purpose of a gift is to show love. “I hate shopping! It’s so stressful staring at stacks of sweaters, racks of neckties, and display after display of novelty gifts knowing that most will be exchanged or broken in short order. My Aunt Mary had a knack for finding just the right gift; everything had a story. Twenty years after her death, her gifts still bring back fond memories. I want to give gifts like that. I want to give a gift that will last.” Susan Jones, artist with Tipping Paint Gallery Art is a gift that lasts. It will be around a long time. “Art will have a lasting impact as it continues to speak to the viewer and to nourish their soul.” Amy Beshgetoorian, artist with Tipping Paint Gallery

Art is permanent. It will be enjoyed for a long time; that’s not true of most gifts. Art reaches beyond, “it becomes loved not only because of its beauty and its origin but because it was cherished by someone we love.” Cheryl McCardle, artist, 311 Gallery As we move toward more meaningful gift giving, don’t forget to add those organizations that support artists and museums to your list of charities. These organizations work to sustain the gift of art that is so vital to civilization. The artists of 311 Gallery and Tipping Paint Gallery invite you to stop in and browse our collection of one-of-a-kind gifts so that you can give a gift that lasts. “Without art, the crudeness of reality would make the world unbearable.” George Bernard Shaw

17 ed garden. The project was developed through two consecutive teaching artist residencies and exemplifies working together. Thirty children, ages 5-12, wrote and illustrated this allegorical story to celebrate the way PORCH has united the Chapel Hill-Carrboro community in its fight against local hunger.

December 6, 2016 - February 5, 2017 Opening Reception, Fri, Dec 9, 6-9PM Natural Forces. FRANK’s current featured exhibition looks at the grandness of nature, both in the immense landscapes that surround us, and the microscopic elements that are the building blocks of all things living. Painters Nerys Levy and Carolyn Rugen look to the beauty in their surroundings for inspiration. Levy working on site during her travels, capturing the greenery and enormity of the British countryside. Rugen working locally, painting the serene views from the windows of her home in the heart of Chapel Hill. In addition, jeweler Julie Brooks creates simple graphite drawings on her “sugar coated” enamel surfaces. These drawings highlight DNA structures, viruses, and cells, and the addition of hints of gold and stones highlights these components as precious jewels. Planting Hope. Our Michael and Laura Brader-Araje Community Outreach Gallery features original illustrations created for Planting Hope, a picture book project written and illustrated by kids for kids. The story tells the tale of a hard-working girl discovering a golden seed and together bringing unity and prosperity to a neglect-

In addition to our exciting exhibitions, FRANK will once again be partnering with the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center and The NC Cancer Hospital to collect arts and crafts supplies for their Expressive Arts Program’s “Art Cart.” This program offers patients and family members the opportunity to use art for healing. A list of suggested donations can be found on our website at frankisart.com/st-nick; items can be dropped off at FRANK Gallery anytime beginning December 1; the kickoff event will take place on Friday, December 9th, as part of our 2nd Friday Artwalk celebration. 1.
