You’ve seen flocks of birds in close formation headed south for the winter or flocks of Swifts circling a chimney on a summer’s evening. This common observation of nature appears to be the origin of the old proverb ‘Birds of a Feather’ which dates back to the mid “16th century”. 311 Gallery challenged artists to take this metaphor of personification and apply it to our modern world. February’s juried show will look at the modern interpretation, be it a marker for collaboration, people grouped in a certain way, inanimate objects that are found together or a flock of birds. I recently overheard an art enthusiast say that he found it insulting when an artist uses too much detail. He felt spoonfed, as if the artist didn’t trust him to interpret the piece on his own. I found this perspective particularly interesting for two reasons. First, my art has often tended toward the detailed.

I grew up in a household where art was encouraged (thankfully!) but the measure of ‘good ‘ was often weighed by the detail; the more photorealistic, the better. Naturally, I came to value detail and appreciate it. I practiced it. I excelled in it. But more and more over the last year, I’ve been drawn to a style that’s free-flowing and loose; broader strokes and more room for interpretation. Much more of the piece is insinuated. This is exactly the second reason that thatviewer’s comment caught my ear. Sometimes things overheard are comically serendipitous. I doubt I’ll ever move completely away from detail. I do love it after all. But I’ve always considered myself a practicing artist. I’m a consummate student and always excited to learn new techniques and experiment with new styles. I’m incredibly in love with what I do and I hope that some part of you will be too.

February Featured Artist: Hank D. Herring Featured artist Hank D. Herring learned about art at an early age from watching and being instructed by artistic family members. He served and retired as a United States Marine, with his specialty as a machinist he worked in many mediums: metals, plastics, glass and composite materials. During his career, Hank says he learned something about art in every place he was stationed or visited. His construction and assemblages are made with “found objects” or “rescued

materials” as he calls it. “Using rescued materials in my work reminds me the future can be built by using the past, whether its advice, thoughts or objects.” His work with “rescued materials” illustrates that beauty can be found in anything. “It does require the right attitude, the desire, and a healthy imagination. Art should stir your soul and ignite your imagination.” Hank is co-owner of the Salt Gallery.

Marc Chatov is an Atlanta-based artist who has exhibited paintings in museums and galleries nationally and is regarded as a leading contemporary portrait painter. He has been featured as one of the top eight portrait artists in America in Money magazine and is represented by Portraits, Inc. and Portraits South. Marc is a member of, and exhibits with, prestigious art organizations including the Salmagundi Club of New York and Oil Painters of America.
Roman Chatov (1900-1987) escaped from Russia to New York in 1922 where he studied at the Art Students League and the National Academy of Arts. He was a noted mural painter and costume designer. Among his most notable works are his murals commissioned for New York’s Russian Tea Room, which are currently in the Lincoln Center Library of Fine Art and Museum of the City of New York collections. Interestingly, he shared a studio with Willem de Kooning. Roman was honored with the “Governor’s Award in the Arts” from the Georgia Council for the Arts and Humanities in 1983. Constantin Chatov (1904-1993) was a renowned portraitist, who painted hundreds of prominent subjects including Margaret Mitchell, Clark Gable, and Vivian Leigh as commissioned by MGM. He began his career, however, as a concert pianist in Russia and studied music at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia in the 1940’s. Constantin was an influential member of the arts community and received the 1983 “Governor’s Award in the Arts” from the Georgia Council for the Arts and Humanities. It’s All About the Story Opening: February 27, 6-9pm
The New York Times Book Review said, “In almost every one of [her stories] there is a moment of vision, or love, or unclothed wonder that transforms something plain into something transcendent.” The Hillsborough Gallery artists’ work will delve into the characters that Smith’s web site describes as initially superficial or unsympathetic, but have essential humanity captured in the subtle detail and gentle irony of the stories. The show runs February 23rd through March 22nd, with an opening reception from 6-9 pm on February 27th, and a reading by the author on Sunday, March 8th, from 4-6 pm. The gallery is located on the ground floor of the 1930’s Mercantile Building at 121 North Churton Street in historic downtown Hillsborough. Kirah Van Sickle is an artist and adventurer at heart. Based in Wilmington, North Carolina, her early years set a foundation for travel, exploration, and visual storytelling. As an award-winning illustrator and painter, former creative director, graphic designer, and instructor, Kirah’s career spans the creative spectrum. Her current acrylic/mixed media paintings are an exploration in color and texture, incorporating ephemera within layers of paint. Her process includes painting en plein air, experiencing the immediacy, unpredictable aspects of light, time and place, as well as commitment to her studio practice. Kirah’s approach is a marriage of both a fundamental, representational style and contemporary narrative. These works speak to the duality and journey as artist, as well as become a record of travels, memories, and dreams.
