Ms. Armstrong is the suave disciplinarian of a muscular style. She stacks blocky shapes of color that describe one landscape — a hill with some woods and a shack — visible from the window of her Vermont studio that may be her Mont SainteVictoire. But her shapes also maintain a nearly sculptural independence, hovering slightly above the image, just beyond legibility. At once improvisational and carefully carpentered, these paintings explode toward the eye, like nature on first sight, at its most welcoming and irrepressible. Atlanta Collects: Treasures from Atlanta’s Private Collectors ATLANTA - Art aficionados in Atlanta are enjoying a striking array of works by famous artists at the Breman Jewish Heritage Museum since the exhibition Atlanta Collects: Treasures From Atlanta’s Private Collectors opened on December 5. Degas, Kandinsky, Manet, Delacroix, Picasso, Wyeth, and other masters are featured in this exclusive art show borrowed from the private collections of Atlanta residents, and many of these pieces have never been seen in public before.

The Breman is presenting Atlanta Collects in celebration of its 20th anniversary with the goal of highlighting the diversity of Atlanta’s Jewish-owned collections. The first part of the show runs through Feb. 26, 2017 and features art from the 1800s until the end of the 20th century. The second phase, showcasing works created after 2000, will take place from March 12 until June 11, 2017. The sheer variety of Atlanta Collects has come as a surprise to many. “That’s the advantage of a show like this – visitors can gravitate toward the works that speak to them personally. There is something for everyone,” said Aaron Berger, the museum’s Executive Director. This is not a show of Jewish art, he added, but is instead an exceptional fine art exhibition featuring a variety of styles, artists, genres, and sub-

ject matters from different periods. He also called it “an opportunity to delve into the mind of art collectors from around Atlanta.” Atlanta Collects Curator William Eiland, Director of the Georgia Museum of Art, said there is a belief that there are few art collectors in Atlanta. “This exhibition combats that notion by just showcasing a small selection of truly fine works from Jewish homes.” “This is a walk through 200 years in one room,” said a visitor recently while surveying the works in the Blonder Gallery. Another commented, “People actually own these works? I never thought about seeing works of this quality outside of a museum. What a treat it must be to live with them every day.” The William Breman Jewish Heritage Mu-

seum is one of the leading places to visit in Atlanta, GA. Their Jewish culture, arts, and history museum is home to the permanent exhibition Absence of Humanity: The Holocaust Years, 1933-1945; and the Blonder Gallery and the Schwartz Gallery, each hosting a variety of traveling and rotating exhibitions. The Museum Library and Cuba Family Archives add to the Atlanta-based attractions while The Weinberg Center for Holocaust Education provides meaningful educational resources for students, teachers, and lifelong learners.

While they had their individual approaches to picture-making, these all involved the marriage of traditional painting subject matter – landscape, allegorical study, nude, still life – to a suitably hand-crafted photographic print. This combination of painterly imagery and print-making is known as Pictorialist photography. The works in this exhibit, drawn from the private collection of Michael Mattis and Judith Hochberg, include superb examples of a variety of photographic printing techniques employed by the Pictorialists, such as platinum, gum-bichromate, carbon, cyanotype, and bromoil prints.

Impressionism to Modernism, Masterworks of Early Photography “Why, Mr. Stieglitz, you won’t insist that a photograph can possibly be a work of art – you are a fanatic!” -- Metropolitan Museum Director Luigi Palma de Cesnola to Alfred Stieglitz, 1902 This exhibit celebrates an intrepid and colorful group of photographers at the turn of the 20th century on both sides of the Atlantic who fought to establish photography as a fully-fledged fine art, coequal with painting, sculpture, and etching. Their leader was Alfred Stieglitz, whose exhibition space, the “Little Galleries of the Photo-Secession,” and exquisitely printed magazine, Camera Work, advanced the vision of the most ambitious artist-photographers, including Heinrich

The exhibit also covers the explosive aftermath of the Photo Secession, when, starting with the work of Paul Strand in 1915-16, photography transitioned by fits and starts from Pictorialism to Modernism. Some photographers, clustered around Clarence White, continued to make painterly photographs. paintings and sculpture by Argentine artist Raúl Diáz (b. 1952) on view through March 18. Diáz has spent many years perfecting a technique for his bas-relief painted panels, and his pieces are notable for their contrast of dream-like imagery and contemplative silence with technical invention. His imagery draws on childhood memories of lake fishing, where the sight of floating wooden boats occupied by solitary figures remains indelible in Diáz’ memory. Now he calls on this memory to create visual metaphors for life’s journey. Recently he has taken his work into three dimensions, carving boats and figures in wood or casting them in bronze. The subjects of Raúl Diáz’ paintings are the topics of life. His recent work is a poetic vision symbolic of our human existence.

SOCO Gallery In Charlotte, NC we profiled SOCO Gallery, an amazing space with an array of nationally collected artists. SOCO Gallery has been opened since May of 2015. How did the gallery begin? The genesis of the gallery stemmed from my personal passion for collecting contemporary art and a desire to support the artists I love. The gallery grew from pop-up exhibitions in Charlotte and the response from the community was so energetic that a permanent space was born. My goal is to bring in artists from all over the world to provide a strong dialogue with our talented artists working locally and regionally Where is the gallery located? We opened in a wonderful 1920â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s bungalow on Providence Road with a beautiful front porch and courtyard in the Myers Park neighborhood of Charlotte. Our space is contemporary with southern elements and provides the feel of an urban gallery mixed with warmth and soul. We share the space with one of the most finely curated boutiques for men in the South, Tabor, and have a lobby filled with vintage vinyl records by Creampuff Records. Most weekends, we have good coffee brewing or champagne pouring to create a welcoming and fun community space. We merged the best of art, music, fashion, and culture to create a really dynamic experience. Tell me about your artists? Originally, SOCO focused on photography as that had been an early collecting interest of mine, and the south has such a strong historical connection with photography. As we grew it became apparent that painting, sculpture, and multimedia also deserved a role in SOCOâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s program and we have been able to do exhibitions with leading painters such as Clare Rojas and sculptors/multi-disciplinary artists such as Robert Lazzarini. We still have a strong roster of photographers and have even reintroduced artists like Ken Van Sickle, who

was one of the original artists in the first photography exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1960. This year, we have an exciting exhibition roster including artists Carrie Yamaoka, Linda Foard Roberts, Elliott Puckette, and Jackie Gendel, among others. For many, it is their first time showing in North Carolina which makes us extremely proud. As you approach your second year anniversary, what have you learned about owning an art gallery? Owning a business has been an incredible journey. I feel lucky to share my passion through SOCO Gallery. I learn something new in this business every day and hope to never stop growing. Elder Gallery At the time of his death in 2009 at age 58, Carl Plansky had just hit his stride. Like so many respected and notable painters, Plansky fought the constant battle of achieving commercial success while still holding true to his artistic vision. It was a position he found equally frustrating and empowering. He said, “the art world is cool and hip. [I am] too hot and passionate.” At the time of his death, he had become a revered and successful artist on his own terms, without compromise or regret. The fire of his individualistic stance was fueled and constantly reinforced by his friend and mentor Joan Mitchell. Their rocky and often sadistic relationship led to months together in her Vétheuil, France studio where some of their best work resulted. For Plansky, Mitchell’s La Tour estate provided lush landscapes with inspirational light that became the subject of his “La Tour Water Garden” series. Elder Gallery has acquired the entire collection of Plansky’s paintings and drawings from his three studios in Brooklyn,

East Meredith, NY, and Budapest, Hungary. The 1000-piece collection has been catalogued and authenticated and is ready for distribution to interested art markets across the United States and Europe. Plansky studied at the Maryland Institute College of Art and the New York Studio School. His work is represented in numerous private and public collections. He taught, or lectured at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Chicago Art Institute, Maryland Institute College of Art, Harvard University, Smith College, Bennington College, Northwestern University, and other institutions of higher learning. www.TheWaveLandGallery.com As Bill reminisced about his heritage, he felt the strong desire for the Torah to be a greater part of his life. He spoke to his rabbi and requested permission to photograph the open Torah. The result, a 36” x 36” canvas is truly inspired. Notice the warm colors and the yad (hebrew for hand) lying across the parashah (hebrew word for a section of the Torah). Bill donated it as a gift to Rabbi Skolnick and the South Orlando Jewish Center. A copy hangs prominently in Bill’s home providing him with inspiration and good feelings, bringing Ha’Shem to mind frequently. Since then he has received accolades from many people. This piece of work is currently hanging (or soon to be) in Bradenton, Clearwater, Orlando, Asheville NC, and several private homes. In this image, the Torah is opened to the parashah Terumah, which describes the construction of the Holy Ark.

Mike Basher Beaufort, North Carolina www.bashergallery.com Working exclusively with black and white film, Mike Basher captures the drama of scenes from the sands of Death Valley to the mountains of Alaska, and of his surroundings in the Outer Banks, where he calls home. His quiet compositions breathe an immense amount of energy, often while incorporating the subtlest of elements. “I work rigorously toward the exact photograph I have in my mind, and when I feel I have composed it, I make one exposure. It is rare that two exposures or different compositions are made of the same scene. Each moment is meticulously crafted, carefully exposed and completely individual as I pour myself into them. They are my best offering.” It is in this way that his work is highly limited, and carefully curated, even before the shutter is released. Basher’s editioned silver gelatin photographs are printed using archival darkroom methods, and are exquisitely custom framed by the artist to his exacting standards.

Mark Bettis went from art director to artist. After 20 years in the advertising field he is living his dream of just painting. He started in a small 200 square foot studio in the River Arts District in Asheville and now has a large gallery and studio on the first floor of the Wedge building.

Originally from Richmond, Virginia, Deane relocated to the Lowcountry almost 10 years ago and now calls Charleston home. She is passionate about being an environmentally conscientious artist making it her mission to create eco friendly art. While Deane’s eclectic collection includes pieces in mixed media collage, clay and paint, her work in found object sculpture brings her the greatest joy and satisfaction.

Mark paints daily and also manages the gallery from behind his painting table, talking with customers and going over his process. As a self-taught artist, Deane’s creative process is guided by two principles. First and most importantly, produce art that makes people happy. Second, strive to be an environmentally conscientious artist whose work has a positive impact on the environment and celebrates recycling as an art form. Using mostly discarded, abandoned, and reclaimed materials, her “environmental folk art” honors those forgotten things. Their interaction with one another is accomplished through detailed layering in a graphic and interesting medley highlighted with bold, vibrant colors to create an unusual balance of industry and art.

Jim merges his passion for the outdoors into every facet of his life. He spends hours with his camera recording the beauty and serenity of the great outdoors with his own sporting dogs by his side. “I feel a closeness to dogs... I have hunted with some great dogs and painted them as well... I know the dedication that exists between an owner and their dog.”

Although she has had a life long dream to paint, she only began her career in 2004 after moving to Charleston. Throughout the years, while raising three children, Teresa studied various media and has selected oil as her medium of choice. She has studied with many local and nationally known artists, in formal classes, as well as workshops.

The distinctive style and quality of Jim’s original paintings, along with his wealth of knowledge and experience makes for an extraordinary combination. His art has generated millions of dollars for conservation groups such as Ducks Unlimited International, Pheasants Forever, Quail Unlimited, and the National Wild Turkey Federation. He was named Southeastern Wildlife Expo “Artist of the Year” in 1987.

Her original work, as well as commissioned work is in private collections across the nation. She is also represented by Spencer Gallery I and The Charleston Artist Guild Gallery.

Barbara Rohde Durham, North Carolina www.barbararohde.com Barbara is a watercolorist. She paints what she sees and feels about this incredibly compex world. Painting full time since 2004, she loves the freedom to grow as an artist. She is a Signature member of the Watercolor Society of North Carolina, showing her work in juried exhibitions throughout the region, and marketing her work through her studio, gallery representation, and website. Barbara paints many different subjects: landscape, architecture, wildlife, florals, and others. Often working in a representational way using processes that emphasize light and shadow resulting in a kind of stylized realism. She works from many different inspirations: her own photos, still life arrangements, on sight landscape, live models, prepared specimens, or her imagination. She pays attention to value, expressing both the visual image and mood in darks, medium tones, and light color, using transparent watercolor layering. Regina Voncannon Seagrove, North Carolina Pottery Juction Studio Regina was born in Tacoma, WA to a military family and spent her young life traveling all over the US and Europe. Regina met her husband, Eddie, while she was studying at Central Texas College. They moved their business to Seagrove, NC, known as “The Pottery Capital of the World” and opened their studio Pottery Junction in 1989. Regina has perfected her art over the years, focusing on shape and form. She is a prolific artist not tied to any special type of ceramic style, she works in a variety of techniques ranging from Raku to porcelain and stoneware. Regina makes beautiful hand turned works which range from abstract flowing designs with eye catching textures to fully functional, yet beautifully utilitarian wares. Currently she is moved by metallic surface and whimsical form working with mixed mediums as part of her finished designs such as beads, metal, plastic shapes, and other materials which aid in the look and expressions the finished works express.

February 7 - March 4, 2017 FRANK Gallery “All colors are the friends of their neighbors and the lovers of their opposites.” - Marc Chagall Color. There is no one way to use it. Simply through color, an artist can evoke strong emotions and create deep meaning in their work. On a color wheel, opposing colors are considered complementary. In a painting, neighboring colors often energize one another. In a work of art, a single color can tell a profound story, many colors together can make a powerful statement. In a sense it is a community of individuals working in harmony, not unlike our own. FRANK gallery presents Local Color, an exhibition showcasing our diverse range of work by our talented community of artists. Each piece has been chosen based on one of the most basic concepts of artmaking – color. This group show features painting, drawing, photography, mixed media, woodwork, and more, by our renowned collective of local and regional artists. Based on the theme of color, we will not only be presenting a range of works, styles, and prices, but will be creating a visual masterpiece curated by our outstanding FRANK Curatorial Committee.

In addition, our Michael and Laura Brader-Araje Community Outreach Gallery features the Disappearing Frogs Project. Founded on the premise of using the arts to illuminate an important environmental issue - the disappearance of the world’s amphibian population. This traveling art exhibition, hopping into FRANK in February, aims to change that through artwork created by regional artists. The Disappearing Frogs Project is a partner of the Amphibian Survival Alliance (ASA), and together they are working to raise awareness of global amphibian declines, inspiring people to take personal action to protect these incredible species, and providing a unique opportunity for artists to support amphibian conservation, education, and research.
