Coastal Photography An intimate composition A work of art, regardless of genre is a personal extension of the creator of the piece. Many art enthusiasts understand this concept in sculptural and canvas mediums. However in our digital age where Instagram, Facebook, and others capture the public mindset, we sometimes forget the very intimate and personal relationship photographers have with their viewers. As both amateur and professional photographer pump out quantities of images, there still remains photographers with a true calling who capture a single theme and emotion and forward their intimate experience to viewers. Mike Basher is a photographer based in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Many of his clients include top Fortune 500 companies for whom he does commercial shoots. Life on the Outer Banks has it’s perks; fly fishing being one, and photography being another. Being near the coast, Basher has developed a very unique and distinct style of photography. His images convey a tranquil simplicity, mixed in with busy abstraction, and even a bit of surrealism
that leaves the viewer seeing a beautifully simple photograph with complex composition. Light, shadow, texture, and subject matter are delicately weaved together to offer the viewer a tranquil understanding of what Basher is experiencing when he takes a photograph. “Elementally, I like to keep things simple. Even if I’m composing a photograph with a great deal of texture, like a sand flat at low tide, I try to make order... of all the contrast in a sea of sand ripples to draw the viewer’s eye through the frame. I do my best to make sense of it all for the viewer”, says Basher. From a technical standpoint Basher is a purist, preferring to make limited exposures to capture the perfect scene. Through minute adjustments Basher is able to convey the raw emotion of a piece to viewers. “For example, Mesquite Flat I, one of my favorite photographs I’ve made is simple and elegant yet dynamic at the same time. That image is from a trip to Death Valley in 2011 and I recall nudging my tripod fractions of an inch several times before I was happy with the composition. Then I made only one exposure of it.” says Basher. He continues, “Even minute adjustments while composing an image gives the final photograph a completely different feel. I don’t ever crop and I don’t use window mats with my print finishing. I

want the viewer to experience the entirety of what I chose to include on the original exposure. Comparing his limited exposure purism to large batch photographers Basher says “...it isn’t uncommon for many photographers to shoot dozens of images of a scene, varying each one slightly, without stopping to think, look, and become part of the scene. Photographers will shoot a great deal, and pick the best frame when they get back to their computer. I think in order to have my true self show in my work, I have to be working in the moment and with the moment, not fishing for a moment in a batch of images.” Basher seeks to create pieces that convey his emotional connection to the experience of shooting each piece. “My photographs are a direct extension of who I am.

While composing, my mood, senses and aesthetics are all at work. I try to make my own interpretation of what I’m experiencing, and pass that on to the viewer. Each moment is meticulously crafted, carefully exposed and completely individual as I pour myself into them. They are my best offering.” Intimate, emotional, and raw. MOCA GA was founded in 2000 and remains the only Museum dedicated to promoting the arts of the state of Georgia and fostering connections between local artists and the community. Ford Smith in Roswell Sparkling like a jewel in the heart of historic Roswell on Canton Street, the new Ford Smith Gallery emerges onto the local art scene featuring the radiantly serene landscape paintings from Atlanta’s own, worldclass artist, Ford Smith. This exclusive, artist-owned gallery is operated by veteran art team, Ford Smith and his wife, Cristi. Ford is one of the nation’s most celebrated artists with worldwide gallery representation, while Cristi runs the the art business and writes for major art industry publications. This is their fourth Ford Smith Gallery, having had two other locations in Roswell and another in Santa Fe, New Mexico. “Ford lives and paints just a few miles from our new gallery, and after traveling for 3 years doing shows in other galleries, we missed having this broader stage to present his work,” Cristi says. Creativity Unleashed March 19, 10-5pm
For the second year in a row, Sunset River Marketplace in Calabash, N.C. is holding its hugely popular Creativity Unleashed event on Saturday, March 19 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Gallery owner Ginny Lassiter said, “Last year, our one-day Creativity Unleashed event was very successful. The community came out and really enjoyed watching the artists work, meeting them, and enjoying live music. So this time we wanted to push the envelope even further.” New this year, the eclectic gallery is expanding the event to feature a month-long exhibition of works that celebrate outsidethe-box thinking and creativity. The show opens on March 1 and runs through April 2. Artists include Marty Allran (clay), Ginny Lassiter (acrylic), Mona Bendin (fabric), Ann McCray (oil), Linda Young (pastel), Ann Cunningham (metal), Celia Wester (oil), and Jim Comer (wood). The event on the 19th will showcase a range of live art including pottery wheel and hand building; marbling; pillow making and fabric dying; oil, watercolor, and acrylic painting; wood carving and more. Kinetic Art: Shaping Time Mar 4-26, 2016 E = mc 2 and art blend together to create Kinetic Art. Wikipedia defines kinetic art as “art from any medium that contains movement perceivable by the viewer or depends on motion for its effect.” Physics explains that an object in motion maintains kinetic energy until its speed changes. If it is powered by the wind or an observer, its speed is constantly changing, creating mesmerizing patterns of light and shadow, color, and shapes. Taking the time to observe this type of sculpture in motion is hypnotic, inducing a state of meditation. What a wonderful way to combat the stresses of everyday living! I recently had the opportunity to spend an evening with some of Kevin Duval’s sculptures. I found myself entranced by the changing designs and enjoyed watching how passersbys couldn’t help but stop and touch and play with the art. The experience had a way of slowing life down, even if just for the moment. The Shaping Time exhibit is a series of interactive, multi-axial, kinetic sculptures that have been composed using a combination of new metals and salvaged components.
The varying shapes, colors, and object placement make each piece unique in its static state, while select pivot placement, careful balancing, and human interaction allow them to dance an original number each time they are touched. Kevin Duval is an emerging, self taught metal artist. A lifelong love of tools, mechanics, and a background in machining has evolved into his current work which is mostly kinetic in nature, and somewhat abstract in design. Working with many different metals and components affords Kevin the opportunity to use a myriad of tools and techniques in the composition of original, one of a kind sculptures. Kevin lives in Wilmington, NC with his wife, and two young daughters.

Beverly McIver, the subject of the HBO documentary Raising Renee, will give a rare public painting demonstration at Craven Allen Gallery on Thursday, March 31, at 5:30 pm. McIver will show how she mixes select colors to achieve her characteristically vibrant palette and luscious surface textures.
Pittman, an abstract landscape painter simplifies the landscape around him in coastal Virginia and South Carolina along with in the great plains and high deserts of the American Southwest. His work is featured March thru April and available year round at Atrium Art Gallery in Charleston.
The event celebrates her latest show, THE TIES THAT BIND, which explores themes of family, cultural identity, and the passage of time. Showing alongside McIver are select advanced painting students from Duke University, where she is the Ebenshade Professor of the Practice of Studio Arts. McIver is widely acknowledged as a significant presence in contemporary American art. She was named as one of the “Top Ten in Painting” in Art in America, and her work is in major museums and corporate and private collections across the country.
“When I walk by the sea or through canyons, I see form, shape, line, and texture as revealed by light and color. I translate this to canvas using acrylic paint applied intuitively and moved around with scrapers, knives, fingers, and sticks. My work is not site specific but I do relate to colors and conditions. I paint my remembered impressions and attempt to create the mystery of ancient places and the passage of time, weather, and man. Edges, texture, and surface are important elements of my work which I strive to be spontaneous, luminous, spare, and deep.” Pittman will be in attendance during the Charleston Gallery Association Artwalk on Friday March 4th from 5-8pm.

Profiles in art Donna Slade Fine Art at Baxters Gallery Donna Slade is a co-owner of Fine Art at Baxters in New Bern, NC. A gem of a gallery, Fine Art at Baxters showcases works in all mediums and several genres, a beautifully choreographed collection of art. What was your introduction to art? Growing up in a small town in Virginia, I remember as a child, discovering several colored pencil drawings of “fish” that my father had done. I thought they were the most wonderful things I had ever seen. I considered that my first memorable introduction to art. Describe your journey to becoming a full-time artist. After graduating from Business College, I studied advertising design and illustration, preparing for a career in commercial art. I operated my own design firm for over 12 years and enjoyed an award-winning 30year career as a commercial artist, designer, and illustrator. Throughout my career, I studied various media but my focus is on representational realistic paintings created in colored pencil. Building many different layers of color creates the paintings. Recently I became a full-time painter and gallery owner in Eastern North Carolina. I am a charter, signature member, and 10-Year Merit Award Recipient of the Colored Pencil Society of America, (CPSA). My paintings have been published in Best of Colored Pencil, CP Treasures, Colored Pencil Masterworks from Around the Globe I, CP Treasures Volume II, CP Treasures Volume III, and The Colored Pencil Signature Showcase. What brought you to Fine Art at Baxters Gallery? Making a move in 2007 from the Raleigh area to the Eastern part of North Caroli-
na, I joined forces with a retired art teacher just opening a small gallery in New Bern. In 2009 the gallery expanded to became an LLC with 4 partners. In 2011 the (1918) 4,500 square foot former historic Baxter’s Jewelry store was purchased and became the permanent home for Fine Art at Baxters Gallery. The gallery is also home to seven working artist’s studios. The gallery offers a wide range of art by locally, regionally, and nationally recognized artists. What’s next for Donna Slade? My future plans revolve around perfecting my technique and continued development of my own personal identifiable style. I will continue to promote the vision of the gallery; continuing efforts to support our artists and provide quality art reasonably priced.
