ternationally renowned artists collected by institutions across the United States. Fine art deserves the utmost in care, handling, and expertise, and this gallery has maintained the highest standards for more than 37 years. Owner Bob Griffin and his staff have extensive experience acquiring and installing pieces for some of Charlotte’s finest corporations, and health care and financial institutions, some of which has encompassed the use of scaffolding and cranes. “It’s important that our clients talk to us about their needs so we can accomplish what they want to achieve,” Bob says. “We have a loyal clientele who keeps coming back because of our service-oriented philosophy”. Karen Dupre, Alveo, cut glass on stainless steel, 52” x 40”

In addition to fine art sales and consultation services Picture House Gallery offers a full-service custom framing shop with over 2,600 mouldings, and such special touches as French matting, period framing, hand-gilded and hand-carved frames, 14-karat white gold or 23-karat gold frames.

New Acquisitions: Picture House Gallery Since 1974, Picture House Gallery has been Charlotte’s premier resource for the discriminating art collector, providing the most comprehensive ranges of art services in the country.

Skilled technicians can also restore oil paintings, antique frames, old documents, and refurbish silk fabrics. This distinctive gallery offers an all encompassing range of art forms. If you have any questions about any of the gallery’s services, come by and talk to the experienced staff.

to show an alternative visual experience. Its departure from reality can be slight, partial, or complete. Definitions for abstract art involve ideas that revolve around a departure from reality:

Selena Nawrocki, Film Noir Square

Abstract Art National Juried Show

• Art that alters color and form in conspicuous ways. • The creation of beautiful effects using pure patterns of form, color, and line. • Gestural marks with no source at all to an external reality. • Art that celebrates the process. • While it may be based on an object, figure, or landscape, the forms have been simplified or schematized. Paintings that do not depict a person, place, or thing in the natural world often represent the spiritual and aim to provoke emotion.

However it is defined abstract art challenges us to interpret an image that in no way resembles the kind of images our brain is programmed to understand. A study by neuroscientist, Eric Kandel, proposes that because our brain must work harder and in a different way to understand abstract art, people often find it intimidating.

311 Gallery March 1-31 Opening Mar 2, 2018 “We are closer to attaining cheerful serenity by simplifying thoughts and figures. Simplifying the idea to achieve an expression of joy. That is our only deed [as artists].” Henri Matisse

The current show at 311 Gallery includes abstract art that runs the range from slight to complete abstraction. The artists have used varied techniques, media, and genre, creating a very cohesive visual experience that is not at all intimidating!

We think of abstract art as being contemporary phenomena but its roots can be traced back to ancient rock paintings, textile patterns, and pottery designs that captured a symbolic reality. More recently, the impressionists and expressionist of the 19th century used numerous abstract techniques to capture emotion and subjectivity. Abstract art is broadly defined as non-objective and non-representational art. Unlike more traditional genres, abstract art uses the language of shape, form, color, brushstrokes, size, scale, and line, which have no source at all in an external visual reality,
