May is going to be huge at FRANK! Rubbish 2 Runway III May 10 – June 5, 2016 Rubbish 2 Runway III features a fashion show, and a month long exhibition of dresses made from recycled materials - all crafted by local students. Each participating student was asked to consider creative possibilities for re-purposing discarded materials while also thinking about sustainable design and creating something lasting and useful – and in this case, wearable. Each dress will be modeled on the runway on May 15 at 3:00PM, at the Mercedes Benz of Durham Showroom, in front of a panel judges for jurying and awarding of prizes. Fragments: Found and Formed May 10 – June 5, 2016 Three FRANK artists who use found materials – from bits and pieces to large, whole objects – in their art have come together for this very special show. For Charron Andrews, Susan Parrish, and Carol Retsch-Bogart, the creative process starts when they come in contact with something that has had a past life or function, no matter how humble. Featured Artist Deborah Sisco Deborah was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio and migrated to Charleston, SC as a young adult where she attended the College of Charleston and developed her passion for art. Her work is influenced by the pioneers of the modern art movement of the nineteenth century and by today’s’ Pop music. She approaches each new work with a vision of color that is intended to produce a poetic relationship to both the compositions and music that inspired each new work. According to Deborah, it is first and foremost about the color, it needs to be visually pleasing, disturbing, happy or peaceful, but it should not leave you empty. “I continually push myself outside of my comfort zone into new and unfamiliar areas. The art I create today will continue to evolve and will not be the same art I create tomorrow, next week or next year. My
desire is to leave the viewer with a sense of feeling of some sort. Not necessarily the feelings that I experienced on the day(s) that I drew or painted my subject, after all it would be impossible for the viewer to ever have those same emotions or be in the same place I was on those days. My goal is for them to experience their own emotions from the work that I have created. I believe art is a compilation of our conscience and unconscious mind. It is what we experience in our everyday lives and what we dream of at night. It is how we touch reality and how we lose ourselves to our imaginations. Sometimes I see art in a face, or the sky or in a cloud. Sometimes I see a group of shapes, colors or buildings, and sometimes I dream.” Deborah’s work has been recognized nationally and is displayed in private collections and Commercial Establishments across the United States and globally. www.deborahsiscoart.com

In my teens, I was one of those kids who took art correspondence courses, if you can remember those advertisements that asked you to draw a cartoon character like the one they showed and they would accept you based upon your results. I took it very seriously as a child and worked diligently on each course. Money was not easy to come by in our large military family and I was going to maximize my parent’s investment. Those early lessons and courses led me to obtaining my BFA in Painting from Ole Miss with a full ride scholarship.
Profiles Ford Smith Ford Smith Fine Art Ford Smith is an award winning artist showcasing his work at Ford Smith Fine Art in Roswell, Georgia. His works can be found in collections throughout the United States and abroad. We sat down with Ford Smith to understand from where his inspirations originated and where his inspirations are taking him. How has your childhood impacted the art you create today? We were an Air Force family of six kids and lived all over the world when I was growing up. While we were stationed near a small town in northern Japan, my mother spotted artistic talent in me and scraped up enough money to buy me painting lessons from an old Japanese master. Sketching and painting trees was something I learned very early from that culture, and to this day I think you can still identify an Asian aesthetic to my work.
What inspires the colors, shapes, and forms in your paintings? After graduating with my degree in art, I fell into a fashion and commercial photography career that lasted for 25 years, until I turned 50 and gave it all up to return to painting with 100% focus. Fashion photography taught me to be bold with color, and from world travels during that period and still today I’ve been exposed to countless landscapes, vistas, and the wonders of nature and all its colors and compositions. For me, nature is an endless source of inspiration and I can’t see an end to discovering new ways to interpret it. Photography taught me to study light and composition on a level that is rare for an artist. This was before Photoshop, and I had to master how light actually worked so that I could create natural light in artificial environments. It’s not as easy as you’d believe. I have a near photographic memory which helps when I’m painting since I don’t use any references. I paint intuitively and impulsively, looking at nothing but my paints and canvas. How do you define your distinct style? I choose to paint expressively, challenging
11
myself to push the boundaries of landscape interpretations. After returning to painting after 25 years, it took me some time to find myself again as an painter. After painting photo-realism, abstract, figurative, all the genres, I discovered that I found the most fulfillment in re-interpreting how landscapes are conjured. For me, it’s an endless creative challenge to find new ways to reflect water, reinvent trees, leaves, and skies. And then using those experiences to branch off into other subject matters from time to time, like still life and figurative. These days it’s not unusual for me to blend a couple of subject matters at once. Hence, my Human Nature series, which combines figurative and landscapes. What are you currently working on? I am currently working on my Human Nature series. I have a commissioned original painting that is consuming me at the moment, and then I have a show in June that will focus on other works from this series. It’s a particularly interesting collec-
tion of paintings that camouflage humans within nature. Sometimes it takes people a moment to “get it”, but then they do. Some of these paintings depict the figure or figures passionately or provocatively, others might be strong, elated, or tender. I love the creative challenge that these paintings command and they are really fun for me to create. Viewers are fascinated by the blending and subtle hiding of those subject matters that cause you to look deeper into the art. _________________________________ Visit www.artguidemag.com to view more works from Ford Smith as we highlight his new Human Nature Series. Eggistentialism 3.0 Kicks off Tour D’ Coupe Urban farming is becoming a way of life in many of America’s largest cities as municipalities are repealing laws that ban raising chickens within city limits. Backyard henhouses have become so popular that the chicken has become the mascot of the Local Food movement. There are many personally rewarding benefits, in addition to the environmental ones, that come from raising chickens. Creating a bit of country provides a refuge from the hectic pace of city life and gives children the opportunity to learn responsibility and to develop a connection with animals they may not get living in the city. But the best part for many is collecting warm eggs in the morning. Urban farming and raising chickens are bringing communities together in unique ways. Since 2005, Raleigh has enjoyed the Henside the Beltline Tour D’Coop, a garden tour that encompasses 20 coops. Coop owners are eager to share the ins and outs of keeping chickens in the city. Bring your camera and get inspired!
The event has a dual purpose: to promote backyard poultry and urban farming, and to raise money to support Urban Ministries of Wake County which provides vital services to more than 20,000 people, working to alleviate the effects of poverty in Wake County. 311 Gallery has joined in the fun with a juried show, Eggistentialism. For the third year, 311 Gallery is hosting this innovative show that reflects the joy and beauty of chickens and eggs, the gardens they live in, and urban farming. The fun kicks off on First Friday, May 6th at 311 Gallery and culminates June 4th with the 2016 Tour D’Coop in downtown Raleigh. 1. Linda Starr, Walking and Squawking 2. Out of the Attic An Upscale Art Resale West Main Artist’s Co-op Announces their Spring Fundraiser. Art is fundamental to our humanity. It builds bridges between cultures and ethnicities, promotes tourism, improves academic performance, and strengthens local economies. Non-profits alone generate as much as $135 billion in economic activity annually in this country. The donations and support received last year during our Fifth Anniversary Gala helped us to complete the purchase of furniture and lighting for The Venue at West Main, completely upgrade our office equipment, and market the Co-op and Venue to local businesses. Support this year will be allocated toward special projects that will enhance our building, and promote the work of our members. Throughout the months of March and April, the co-op has accepted donations of previously treasured, original works of art from local, generous patrons. Some of the donations include photos, limited edition prints, sculpture and paintings, all original, signed works of fine art. On Thursday, May 12, West Main Artists Cooperative will host the open-
ing night of its Spring Fundraiser, Out of the Attic: An Upscale Art Resale, with a reception and silent auction in The Venue at West Main, 578 West Main St. in Spartanburg, from 6 to 8:30 pm. This fundraiser event will be an opportunity for the public to expand or start an art collection by purchasing donated, upscale works of art and fine crafts at reasonable prices. Entry to the event is a $20 donation in advance or at the door. Food, drink, and live entertainment will be provided to our guests who will be given first chance to purchase and take home newly acquired treasures, all while enjoying the company of local artists and members of the Co-op. All donations are important to the continued success of WMAC. Help them build bridges to their community by attending Out of the Attic: An Upscale Art Resale or making a donation on their website, http:// www.westmainartists.org or on Facebook, https://www.facebook.com/westmaincoop/.

John C. Doyle Gallery Thru May
Ciel Gallery, a fine art collective, presents an exhibition of local artists interpreting groundbreaking directions in their medium of choice and pushing the boundaries of contemporary art May 6 - 28. The theme is inspired by Bob Fosse’s choreography in Sweet Charity, using a retro period of discovery, innovation, and rapid development in the arts to push artists onto new paths of discovery in the current climate.
The Gallery is excited to reveal all new works by our featured artist in May, Danielle Cather Cohen. She is a colorist and impressionist with over 30 years of experience. Her interest in art began at the young age of six when she was mentored for a decade by Evelyn Leavens, an internationally renowned artist from her home state of New Jersey.
Artwork presented will range from mosaic inspired by explorations at Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli in Spilimbergo, Italy, to digital painting and live projections on the exterior of the gallery. Further innovations will be exhibited in Oil, Pastel, Acrylic, Mixed Media, Encaustic, Mosaic, Wood, Metal, and Ceramic. A reception will be held Friday, May 6 with the artists, 6-9PM. Ciel’s First Friday openings are popular with both new and seasoned collectors.
With fine art collectors all over the USA, Danielle’s work has been in demand for many years. At the beginning of each painting, Danielle says: “I start my journey to an all-encompassing, almost indescribable place. I strive for the essence of beauty - a dance with color.” Her intuitive nature and love of color leads her to create many vibrant works in subjects as broad as figurative, wildlife, landscapes, and especially nautical works and seascapes. John C. Doyle Gallery is a Charleston, South Carolina based art gallery showcasing beautiful works by nationally renowned artists.
Profiles in art Nicole Kennedy Nicole’s Studio & Art Gallery Nicole Kennedy is an award winning artist and owner of Nicole’s Studio & Art Gallery in Raleigh, North Carolina. Describe your journey to becoming a full time artist. It is a lifelong journey so to make a long story short I always drew as a child, painted in oils during highschool taking frequent trips to MOMA and the Met in NYC, then studying design at Parson’s in NYC. I ended up working for 15 years drawing and producing TV commercials as an art director. It wasn’t until we moved to Raleigh that by necessity I had to start painting again to decorate my husband’s restaurant. That was 1996 in Raleigh and the demand for original art was almost a novelty. How did you come to own your own gallery? In the year 2000, I was looking for studio outside my home and found a retail space for rent in an unpopular neighborhood in Raleigh. I exhibited my own works and opened to the public. In 2001 I expanded and started to represent artists other than myself. In 2012, I moved the gallery to a building next door; the neighborhood once derelict is now touted as one of the top urban areas in the country. What sets Nicole’s Studio & Art Gallery apart from other galleries? We are one of the only galleries in NC to represent fine artists with a special focus on excellence in Contemporary Realism and American Impressionism. We are also well known as the #1 gallery to host professional art workshops at all levels. Nicole’s Studio & Art Gallery has a reputation for hosting some of the regions best workshops. Why did you begin offering workshops?
Because I am an artist owned gallery, creating workshops happened by accident. Clients, artists, and visitors came in asking if I taught. So there was a demand not being met in the area and it was a natural for me to fill it as I had a space to teach in. How do you choose which workshops to offer? We offer a curriculum from beginner to advanced. The beginner class starts the student off with a bedrock of knowledge and hands-on practice painting realism. Subsequant classes are designed to continue their growth into more advanced areas. But we are most well known for hosting week long workshops for advanced or professional artists with national master instructors. What does the future hold for Nicole Kennedy the artist and Nicole Kennedy the gallery owner? For myself I would like more time to explore my own artistic journey and I am not ruling out an exploration into more abstract contemporary genres. With the whole art world online, the physical gallery has almost become an obsolete venue. Having said that, by providing workshops for hundreds of students, the gallery is always drawing new talent and new clients often grow out of those classes.
