The John C. Doyle Gallery is excited to showcase all new oils by this vibrant and inspiring artist. Margaret has been a constant in the Charleston art community since the early 1990’s, and is included in a handful of artists that formed a camaraderie in those early days before Charleston had galleries to show their work.
Holly Irwin’s solo show Mademoiselle explores a new series of figure paintings inspired by the life and work of Coco Chanel. She had this vision of the beautiful world of haute couture, fine dressmaker details, and exquisite models captured in a series of dream-like paintings - the Art of Fashion.
With her exploration from watercolors into oils, and her unique process of creating mixed media monotypes, Margaret’s consistent work and intuitive style has helped create the destination that Charleston has become for fine art collectors.
As the daughter of a fashion illustrator, she has a special fondness for this lost art and so she challenged herself to reinterpret some of Chanel’s iconic creations into a contemporary show of canvases and works on paper. Chanel’s rags-toriches story began in an orphanage and ended with a fashion empire; her tweed suits, her little black dresses, the lavish gowns, the ropes of pearls; The House of Chanel is a show about fashion but also about a vision of simplicity that they both share.
Margaret finds inspiration all around the Lowcountry of South Carolina, and when asked about her goals as an artist, she says “Nature is bursting with color, and one of my goals is to share that with others.” See her new works including beautiful country roads, blooming flowers of all kinds, and serene beach scenes of Adirondack chairs beckoning to be enjoyed!

With his representational approach to oil painting, South Carolina artist Todd Baxter strives to capture on canvas the truth and beauty he sees all around him. He chooses to be positive and focus on all that is good in life. Whether it’s a rusty old truck, a vanishing tobacco barn, or a pretty face, there’s beauty to be discovered and shared.
Fifteen years after she moved to Raleigh and developed her signature painting style through her public studio and gallery in the Warehouse District, Carol Joy Shannon has changed her life and her work again.
Todd is extremely grateful to be able to pursue his passion, to have the opportunity to do what he loves doing, every day. He specializes in portraits, landscapes, and seascapes. Currently he is working on a series of Charlotte landmarks, old favorites like Price’s Chicken Coop and the Diamond Restaurant. Todd is represented by the Providence Gallery in Charlotte, NC, and Olive’s Gallery in Fort Mill, SC. He also teaches beginner to intermediate oil painting classes in Charlotte and Rock Hill. Moving halfway between Charleston and Savannah in January, she started looking at life through a softer lens. “The light in the Lowcountry is always filtered through moisture. A quarter of the marshland on the East Coast surrounds where I live now.” She still paints her signature skylines, but now uses images of them, as well as her own photos, to create smaller mixed media works, which showcase the character and qualities that make us love the places we do. Profiles in art Adam Cave Adam Cave Fine Art Adam Cave Fine Art has been owned and operated by Adam Cave since its founding in 2008. Through carefully curated exhibits and award winning artists, Adam Cave has brought a unique gallery space to the Raleigh arts scene. What drew you to the visual arts? I grew up in a family of artists, spanning both sides of my family and multiple generations. My father is a professional painter, and my mother is the daughter of a painter and a hollywood producer. They all gave me enormous encouragement from an early age, along with lots of education. My first family trip to Europe, at age eleven, was packed full of visits to art museums, gothic cathedrals, and roman ruins. These experiences, and others like them, started me on a path that lead to double majoring in Studio Art and Art History in college and pursuing an art career from that point onwards. Why a gallery? This really stems from the urge my wife Cindy and I felt to create something of our own, much like the artists that we represent. I began working in galleries over 20 years ago, right after college. And, while I did have a great deal of input as a director or an associate in previous galleries, the ability to take one’s own idea and carry it through to fruition has been deeply satisfying. When we opened the gallery in 2008 my wife Cindy and I saw ourselves as serving three populations. First, we wanted to represent a very select group of artists and, through the sale of their work, really contribute to their lives and careers. Second, we wanted to provide art collectors with carefully curated works of value and integrity that would add to their quality
of life. And, third, we wanted to both challenge and educate the public in such a way as to create new generations of art collectors and more interest in art in general. Do you collect art? My wife Cindy and I do collect art and have for many years. Our personal tastes are not identical but do overlap. Because we have made a point of only representing artists in the gallery that we respond to personally, many of these same artists are in our own collection. Our collection includes numerous contemporary figurative and landscape works, historic American and Japanese woodblock prints, and a selection of Southern Folk Art sculpture. What’s next? The gallery is planning some new and innovative ways for people to experience art, along with our more traditional shows. After a year off, we are hosting our fifth historic print show this month featuring many wonderful works from the 30s and 40s. In the new year we have an interactive sculpture show planned in which patrons will have an opportunity to participate in the making of the art in the show. _________________________________ Adam Cave has been the owner and director of Adam Cave Fine Art since 2008.

Orange County Studio Tour Nov. 7 & 8 and 14 & 15 Saturdays 10:00 to 5:00 Sundays 12:00 to 5:00 This year is the 21st year for the Orange County Artists Guild Open Studio Tour, an event that has become eagerly anticipated in Orange County and beyond, now drawing thousands of visitors. Started in 1995 with just 28 participating artists, the Guild presently has 125 member artists, 82 of them sharing their work at 65 studios this year during the first two full weekends of November. These are serious artists, men and women from their 30‘s into their 70‘s, who excel in their various art and fine craft media, and who work in just about every art medium you can think of. Most show their work at galleries or other art venues, and many are award winning and nationally known. During the Tour, you’ll get a chance to meet Guild artists, learn about their creative process firsthand, view a body of work up close, and if you wish, purchase pieces directly from the artist. Attendance is always free, and people who just want to look are as welcome as those who are looking to buy.

Piedmont Craftsmen’s Fair November 21-22 The one thing visitors to Piedmont Craftsmen’s Fair in Winston-Salem, NC can expect is that their expectations will be seriously shaken. Although this annual show may be based in a small southern city, it is anything but a small town craft fair. Those looking for fine functional craft will not be disappointed. Neither will those looking for fine art. Since its founding by a group of craft makers and craft collectors in 1963, this juried membership guild has consistently attracted the most respected artisans working in the craft media. A rigorous two part peer jury process insures that those invited and accepted for membership are not only masters of their chosen technique, but are creative, distinctive, and innovative. A visitor shopping for a simple coffee mug will be hard pressed to choose from among more than 20 clay artists. Stoneware, porcelain, earthenware; brilliantly colored glazes, subtle earth tones, delicate graphic designs; no two are alike. The same holds true for jewelers, working in materials ranging from paper or colored porcelain to silver and copper, to gold and precious stones. Jewelry purchased from the goldsmith’s own hands is not just a statement piece, it is the beginning of a beautiful friendship, a connection between maker, materials, object, and owner, quite unlike any other purchase.
One-of-a-kind wearables may be woven, felted, knitted, or hand dyed. Glass is hot blown, kiln formed, leaded, fused, or even combined with other materials in totally unexpected ways. Wood finds more expressive qualities than one would have thought possible as furniture, bird houses with a mid-century flair, and even abstract contemporary two-dimensional wall pieces. Winston-Salem is worth an overnight visit in mid-November. Home to Reynolda House Museum of American Art, the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art, Old Salem Museums and Gardens, and a thriving downtown arts district, the city was also recently named one of the south’s best foodie towns. Celebration of Seagrove Potters Nov 21-22 Seagrove, NC is a truly unique spot in the center of North Carolina. Home to the country’s largest community of working potters in the country, the backgrounds of the ceramic artists are as varied as the work they produce here. Coming from family tradition, local community college programs, internationally known ceramic educational institutions, they have all settled in Seagrove, an area long known for pottery making and the clay found in the ground. Today, this community draws people from around the world to visit, learn more, and buy one of a kind work. Once a year a majority of the Seagrove clay artists gather under one roof to showcase their work together. The Seagrove Area Potters Association hosts the Celebration of Seagrove Potters, featuring only artists that live in and create their work in Seagrove. It is always the weekend before Thanksgiving, indoors at the historic Luck’s Cannery in Seagrove. The event begins Friday night with a Gala from 6-9pm offering early shopping, a fully catered reception and the collaboration auction. Tickets are available on line at discoverseagrove.com. Saturday (9-5pm) and Sunday (10-4pm) the Potters Market is open for shopping. Food trucks, children’s activities, demonstrations, and more will also be offered. One of the most unique offerings is the Friday
night Gala Collaboration Auction. Many potters step outside their studios to create a work with another artist that they donate to the auction. This is something that they would not normally do, working with another artist to create something unique and collectable. Stepping outside the usual boundaries working with a different clay body, different firing processes, glazes, and another artist is challenging and sometimes stressful. It makes the potters stretch their imagination, learn new tricks, and do things that they wouldn’t normally do. These pieces can only be found at this auction each year and are all one of a kind. Plein Air Paint Out En Plein Air is the art of painting in the open air; a very important aspect of the works of the Impressionists, the Barbizon School, and the Hudson River School. Over the last 20 years, there has been a resurgence in plein air resulting in Paint Outs across the country. Celebrate November When we think of November holidays, we think of Thanksgiving. There are two more holidays that have special celebrations. In America’s southland, sweet potatoes play an important role in both diet and economy. Sweet potatoes are high in nutrition and they taste good too! North Carolina is ranked the nation’s #1 supplier explaining why the sweet potato is the state’s vegetable. All over the south, late October and November mean Sweet Potato festivals with live entertainment, art, and beauty contests to raise money for projects in our poorer communities. Over in France there is Beaujolais Nouveau Day. Beaujolais Nouveau is a cherry-red, fresh, and fruity wine with a short fermentation period which was originally produced to celebrate the end of the harvest season. French law doesn’t allow the wine to be released before the third Thursday in November so at 12:01am, the festivities begin and last for 5 days, honoring the wine and the farmers that make it.
Since 1951, there has been a race from Beaujeu to Paris to carry the first bottles for distribution. The wine has been carried by motorcycle, balloon, helicopter, Concorde, elephants, runners, and rickshaws. In honor of these two holidays, Tipping Paint artists have put together an exhibition that celebrates everything Southern and French; there’ll be some sweet potatoes and wine too. 1.
