Herb Jackson

Jackson painted and exhibited professionally throughout his teaching career and retired to paint full time at his spacious studio in downtown Davidson. Jackson also is a master printmaker.

Lee Hansley Gallery Herb Jackson, who has a solo show opening this month in Raleigh, is among the most collected living artists in the state today. The exhibition opens November 5 and will run through December 29 at Lee Hansley Gallery. This will mark Jackson’s first exhibition in the gallery’s new warehouse space located at Dock 1053 just north of downtown Raleigh at the intersection of Whitaker Mill Road and Atlantic Avenue.

Paintings by Jackson are pure abstraction. And while they may seem accidental, each work is constructed of many layers of paint-often as many as 30 layers--which the artist scrapes into with various implements in order to reveal--or excavate--layers of color beneath the surface. The surfaces are very rough and tactile and his pallet is vivid. Herb Jackson is a true colorist. His works are identified by very poetic titles.

Work by the Raleigh native is also currently on exhibit at the new Gregg Museum of Art and Design on the campus of North Carolina State University. It will also run through the end of the year.

The reception on November 5 is open to the public and live entertainment will be provided.

Where: Lee Hansley Gallery 1053 E. Whitaker Mill Rd, Raleigh (919) 828-7557 www.leehansleygallery.com Hours: Tues-Sat 11-6pm

Jackson, who was professor of art at Davidson College, his alma mata, for 42 years earned his MFA at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1970. His works are in over 100 public collections.

Piedmont Craftsmen’s Fair

Nov 18-19

While preferences about the degree of functionality, porcelain over stoneware, bright colors vs earth tones, or wheel thrown over hand built may divide collectors of fine handcrafted clay, they are united in their love of the basic process by which wet earth becomes solid and impermeable. Shoppers at Piedmont Craftsmen’s Fair will have the opportunity to indulge their own particular preferences when more than 100 of the finest artisans from across the United States fill the booths at the Benton Convention Center in Winston-Salem, NC on November 18 and 19. The Fair, which has been called one of the 10 best fine craft shows in the country, presents a broad sampling of the finest work available in artist-designed handmade home goods, wearables, jewelry, furniture, and decorative items. This year’s Fair will feature more than 25 artists working in clay, each presenting their own one-of-a-kind vision.

Clay collectors will find stoneware, porcelain, and earthenware glazed with exuberant color, subtle earth tones, and delicate graphic designs. Sculptural works, range from fanciful animals to thought-provoking sculptures inspired by nature, myth, memory, and spirituality. More than just a shopping experience, Piedmont Craftsmen’s Fair also features ongoing clay demonstrations presented by exhibiting artists that provide a window into the creative process, whether they are throwing, hand building, carving, coiling, or burnishing. Winston-Salem is worth an overnight visit in mid-November. Home to Reynolda House Museum of American Art, the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art, Old Salem Museums and Gardens (celebrating their 250th anniversary this year), and a thriving downtown arts and dining district, the city was also recently named one of the south’s best foodie towns.

Since its founding by a group of craft makers and craft collectors in 1963, this juried membership guild has consistently attracted the most respected artisans working in the craft media. A rigorous two part peer jury process insures that those invited and accepted for membership are not only masters of their chosen technique, but are creative, distinctive, and innovative.

Piedmont Craftsmen’s Fair will be held November 18 and 19 at the Benton Convention Center in Winston-Salem, NC. Visit piedmontcraftsmen.org for more information about the 54th Fair and weekend hotel packages.

Celebration of Seagrove Potters

Nov 17-19

Recently voted #1 Town for Craft Lovers, Seagrove is located in central North Carolina, making it the perfect day trip destination. It is the largest community of potters, with the longest continuous history of pottery making in the United States. More than 100 ceramic artists call Seagrove home.

To celebrate the event’s 10th anniversary, the potters are giving away a handmade commemorative mug to the first 100 Gala guests. The Celebration continues Saturday and Sunday with the potters market, demonstrations, children’s activities, food trucks, silent auction on Saturday, and Sunday beer garden. Proceeds from the auctions support the local pottery community’s pursuit of art and education.

The Celebration of Seagrove Potters is the one time of year that the majority of the Seagrove ceramic artists gather under one roof to showcase their work together. The Celebration always takes place the weekend before Thanksgiving at the Historic Luck’s Cannery in Seagrove.

The 10th Annual Celebration of Seagrove Potters is November 17 – 19. The Friday night Gala is from 6 – 9pm. The potters market continues Saturday, from 9am – 5pm and Sunday, from 10am – 4pm. More information and tickets available at www. DiscoverSeagrove.com. Be sure to visit the Celebration of Seagrove Potters Facebook page for artist listings and up to date information.

This premier event is a collector’s paradise of exceptional art pieces, pottery for your home, and much more. Festivities kick off Friday night with a Gala, live auction, and potters market. Enjoy an evening full of entertainment featuring a live 15-piece jazz band, food, craft beer, and wine. Two or more Seagrove artists work together to create collaborative pieces for the live auction. Be the first to bid on this year’s 10th anniversary commemorative platter, signed by the Seagrove potters.

Extend your shopping experience by attending the Holiday Open House, happening at participating Seagrove pottery shops the first two weekends of December. Seagrove potters are open year round and welcome visitors.

appreciation of natural beauty and the painting of landscapes is a normal and enduring part of our spiritual activity. This idea was intensified during the Romantic movement and refined by the French Barbizon School providing the platform for the Impressionist and Post-Impressionists. In the early 19th century when the United States was expanding west, artists were encouraged to go out west and record the epic scope of the landscape. Their (Hudson River School) mammoth scale works gave viewers a sense of the new territory while celebrating the wondrous creation earth is. Not long after artists began to incorporate the raw, terrifying power of nature.

Casey Brown, Unverified Landscape I

Landscapes and Seascapes

The Industrial Revolution altered many traditions and ways of life, including landscape painting. Landscapes moved from an idealized, classical form to the more focused painting of out-of-doors, creating a more tactile and visual experience.

311 Gallery Nov 3 - Nov 25

The introduction of photography in the early 20th century gave the artist more control over composition and subject matter. Beginning in the late 20th century, the genre expanded to respond to fears of global destruction and ecological disasters. The definition has grown to include urban, cultural, industrial, and architectural landscapes.

Landscape painting has played different roles in art history over the centuries beginning as backgrounds for historical, religious, and allegorical paintings as well as portraits. It wasn’t until the end of the 15th century that artists like Leonardo da Vinci and Albrecht Duer began painting pure landscapes.

In the 21st century, we continue to celebrate the wondrous creation of earth while contemplating the impact we as humans have on the land. Join us at 311 Gallery for a national juried exhibition of the best of contemporary landscapes.

In the early 16th century the Germans, Italians, and Dutch developed a new style of landscape painting using aerial and graphical perspectives that remained influential for a century. The idealized Italian landscape, pastoral, hilly, and wooded, was used by artists throughout Northern Europe. Many Northern European artists made a living selling Italianate landscapes without ever making a trip to Italy! This style was so popular that it became formulaic and could be copied over and over again.
