Lowcountry Landscapes The Art of Emotions There is something to be said about the tranquility nature provides. Our mother earth always seems to be surprising us with her beauty and the raw emotions each individual feels as they step out of our modern, hectic lives and into the majestic realm of our natural existence. As modern and urban as our lives have become, nature still creates awe inspiring sensibilities that transmit our appreciation and sentiments for nature’s natural artistry. For millennia’s artists have been transmitting this awe onto mediums, all the while escaping on a romantic journey, seizing on nature’s romantic, calming, yet subtly energetic and compelling subject matter. Nestled in the southeastern portion of South Carolina, the ACE Basin (river basin of the Ashepoo, Combahee, and Edisto Rivers) inspires artists who seek to use their palette to capture the Lowcountry’s artistic imagery. “The ACE Basin is probably my favorite area to explore and
paint. The old rice fields of the Combahee, plantation drives lined with live-oaks, the ever-flowing tidal waters, the pine woods of Edisto… all are a treasure that I’ve yet to fully explore”, says J. Christian Snedeker. “ It’s a land of timeless-ness, deeply imbued with history and the ghosts of the past. From ruins of old churches and plantations, ancient live-oaks, the mysterious drapery of Spanish moss, the vast expanses of tidal marshes, all under the ever-changing Southern sky, one feels a part of a continuum of time and place.” The subtle details intricately sowed between powerful subject matter seems to define Snedeker’s energetic and prevailing imagery. Viewers are immediately appreciative of the robustious dynamism Snedeker conveys with his paintings. “I try to paint the essence of the place, and as I apply paint and build the idea, often the composition, or the light will draw me in a new direction that better expresses the original concept”, says Snedeker. Technique and a highly refined ingenuity for composition and light bring forth the

emotional appeal of his works. His use of differing light, many times low and indirect, influences viewer’s perceptions and masterfully invokes the natural serenity and peacefulness of the Lowcountry. One cannot help but feel at home with the warmth and calmness of his paintings. While the use of light and composition affect the emotional response in Snedeker’s work, Betty Anglin Smith uses color to capture the gentle, undisturbed natural beauty of her subject matter in a not so subtle way. “When I paint the Lowcountry, my emotions come through in color. Sometimes the color is representative of tranquility, and sometimes it’s a bit more dramatic!”, says Smith, who continues, “As an artist, this quintessential Lowcountry setting provides me with both inspiration and a happy serenity. The smell of salt water and pluff mud, the changing tides, the grand oak trees - the Lowcoun-
try is my constant muse.” Smith’s artistically emotional response to her surroundings are obvious in her use of powerful colors which beckon the viewers to appreciate her use of a Neo-Expressionism palette and form. The brush strokes and unique color patterns bring forth a dramatic playfulness, yet at the same time forces the viewer to take seriously the imaginative interpretation of the painted scene. There are many different manners in which emotions can be conveyed through canvas. The Lowcountry is a prime example of the profusion yet commonalty of how emotions are “spoken” with paint and brush. Whether through a highly refined use of composition and light, or a neo-expressionist interpretation through brush strokes and color, the tranquility and comfort found in the Lowcountry are easily accessible on canvas.

Gregg Kreutz Gallery Show Plein Air Workshop and Paint out, Oct 16-20 As an artist, Gregg Kreutz approaches his work seeking balance between the complexities of the external world and the constraints of a canvas. “Each picture is a visual separation of the highly significant from the less significant,” he said. “Painting is a window into the essential.” Kreutz’s paintings expertly play up the defining elements of a scene while allowing its nuances to show through. As an instructor, Kreutz encourages others to consider their subjects in the same way. “Painters are fortunate in that they can convey large ideas with very modest means,” he tells his students. This lesson is especially suited for the plein air artist tasked with capturing the vastness of a scene without compromising important details. This month, Kreutz will bring his expertise to Beaufort Art Market, a studio, gallery and art school just steps from the Historic Beaufort, NC, Waterfront. The long weekend opens Friday, Oct. 16, with a reception and exhibition of Kreutz’s recent work. The following day artists are invited to set up their easels and take part in the first “Plein Air is Everywhere” competition. Kreutz will judge the entries and cash prizes will be awarded. The

19 Painting tours have taken her to Spain, Guatemala, Argentina, Ireland, and throughout the United States. Whether solitary excursions (like scouring the coast of Maine for painting sites) or group efforts with other professionals or students, Mary believes painting trips are essential to an artist’s career and growth. Future tours are planned to Italy, France, Costa Rica, Mexico, and New Zealand. A lifelong conservationist, Mary’s 39 acre residence in North Carolina is slated to be left as an artist retreat and bird sanctuary. It is listed on the North Carolina Birding Trail.
Profiles - Mary Erickson Elder Gallery - Solo Exhibtion October 2 - 31 Preferring to work on location in the tradition of painters since the French Impressionists, Mary Erickson travels extensively. She creates field studies then returns to the studio to produce large paintings using the visual knowledge and critical information gathered in the field. “Mary has an uncanny ability to retain in her memory bank the atmospheric conditions for each of the studies she creates. When she’s back in the studio she can pull them up to create her beautiful landscapes”, says Larry Elder of Elder Gallery.
Mary is a founding member of Southern Plein Air Artists, a member of The Group of Eight, and The Florida Four, all Southern based alliances that are intent on recording the scenery of the rapidly vanishing natural southern landscape. She is a Signature Member of the American Society of Marine Artists. In addition to Artists for Conservation and the Society of Animal Artists, memberships include the Oil Painters of America, the American Impressionist Society, and the Plein Air Painters of the SouthEast (PAP-SE). Kimo Minton was born in 1950 in Lawrence, Kansas. A self-taught artist, Minton’s work developed organically through reading, observing, and art-making. His wide ranging interest in world cultures, from the tribal motifs of Papua New Guinea to Japanese print making, led him to develop a form of figurative abstraction reminiscent of many cultures but derived from none in particular. The result is a universality to which we can all respond.
Kathryn’s magical realism creates splendid realities in which everyone yearns to reside. Color, light, patterns, animals, music, intimate rooms, mystery, romance, and fantasy are interwoven. These elements imbue Kathryn’s paintings with warmth, welcoming and intriguing the viewer. The connection with animals is as important to Kathryn as it is to Dog & Horse Fine Art: we believe art should be uplifting, moving the viewer in a positive way, like listening to the trickle of water in a fountain.
Since 1989 he has had numerous oneman exhibitions in the United States and recently garnered representation in London. His work is not limited to any single expression – he is equally adept at two and three-dimensional works in various media from sculptures in wood, marble, or bronze to his recent polychrome woodcut panels. “Unlike my sculpture which takes enormous pre-planning, the woodcuts are an outgrowth of the moment. They allow me to be the Jazz-Man, granted in slow-motion due to the mechanics of carving, but I can be totally spontaneous and follow my intuition toward whichever mythic or symbolic forms arise.”
Kathryn’s career began when she worked with her uncle, the American landscape painter Robert Jordan. She had six exhibitions at Tatistcheff Gallery in New York City from 1983-2003. Freeman has exhibited in London, Los Angeles, Boston, Washington DC, and in Europe. Shortly after her first exhibition in 1984, Kathryn moved to Europe. There she was inspired by the symbolism and allegory of Polish culture. After six years in London she returned to live outside of Washington DC. Her fascination with animals has become even more evident in her later works. Exhibiting Oct 2-31.

Painter Curt Butler does not refer to himself as an encaustic artist in the purest sense because his process calls for the use of wax mostly as a medium. The word encaustic means to literally “burn in”, which requires the use of a heating tool to layer the color pigment with the wax.
For nearly forty years Charles Robertson has redefined encaustic painting. Encaustic, from the Greek enkaustikos, meaning to burn in, is an ancient technique. T he encaustic process begins by melting down wax sticks infused with pure pigments. This special paint is applied to a surface, such as an emery board, where it’s manipulated with metal brushes and other tools. The work is then reheated so a new layer of media may be added.
The technique originated from ship builders in ancient Greece and resurfaced in modern art in the work of Jasper Johns. Butler chooses the oil/encaustic process because it affords him the opportunity to carve into paint, while adding additional layers of color, and the ability to control and slow the tempo of his brushstroke. The process varies; sometimes he mixes oil and wax to build an abstract surface and then heats it up; other times, he does not apply heat until a particular stage of the painting is complete. “However I choose to work with it, I find it provides me the emotional and physical response I am seeking with paint, which leaves me with a feeling of rawness, energy, and movement.” ~ Curt Butler
Most encaustic pieces are quite textured, but Robertson laboriously smoothes each layer to achieve a distinct finish. Often more than thirty layers of encaustic paint have been buffeted into a lustrous patina. Robertson uses this luminous quality to great effect in his landscapes, crafting ethereal scenes where fog disperses moonlight over rolling hills. The above offers a whimsical departure for the artist. Varied shapes intersect one another, allowing pops of orange and red to defy the cool palette. Blue nodules, reminiscent of music notes, spring across the picture. Meandering lines playfully turn back on themselves and marks a shift towards the abstract for Robertson.

“Behind The Piano”. A highly anticipated collection of Li’s new Piano series. The collection showcases his talent as a classically trained artist as well as modern influences displayed in his styles of realism to abstractionism. His passion, the precision of his brush strokes as well as his masterful use of colors can be seen in each piece. His Piano series showcases pianos inspired by music through the use of vibrant and muted colors. Zheng Li was accepted to the prestigious Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts in Shenyang, China at the age of fifteen. He then graduated from the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts and became a professor at the Lu Xun Academy. He accepted an invitation from the Appalachia State University to teach. From there, he has gone on to exhibit his art in China and the United States, and has collectors worldwide. Join Muse & Co. Fine Art for the artist reception which will be October 17, 6-9pm. After exploring different painting styles and themes, Ford Smith has found his niche in contemporary landscapes conjured from the stunning horizons witnessed during his travels. Emboldened by critics and collector’s enthusiasm, he narrowed his focus there and pushed the creative boundaries of landscapes to arrive at his distinctive and radiant style. Smith never paints from a photograph. Instead, he enjoys the freedom and creative abandon to see where impulse might lead. The intensity of working over a single piece to finish it makes the process very physical. Well known for his mosaics, splashes, and seemingly endless ways of abstracting reflections, he lets layers of paint – acrylics on canvas – drip and flow, just letting things happen. “I was taught in college to let the paint find the imagery,” he recalls. Ford then goes in with skilled precision to create the light, details, and natural elements that define his fascinating style of painting. Join us for Ford Smith’s annual one-man holiday show, November 13-15, 2015 in Historic Roswell.

NC Inspiration Naturally with Vicki Rees Since moving to North Carolina in 1998, I’ve walked countless miles around Raleigh’s parks and found inspiration for my “NC, Naturally” series of paintings. I’ve found the best places to look for fivelined skinks, how to spot a toad hole, and that wild turtles can learn to come when “called” for feeding. As the seasons change, so does my walking routine. Summer means up and out early to beat the heat; winter is an afternoon stroll.
and goslings. Summer has trumpet vines, dragonflies, and swallows. However, fall is perhaps my favorite time. It means mushrooms, Indian pipes, autumn foliage, and migrating flocks. The air is clear and the sky is a beautiful Carolina blue. So many park visitors are intent on their exercise, multi-tasking on their phones, or whizzing by on bicycles, that they miss seeing their surroundings. Take out the earbuds. Put away the phone. Slow down for a just a little while and enjoy the world around you!
