She earned her MFA in painting from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1999. Her work has been shown several times prior at Lee Hansley Gallery; and also at Diego Rivera Gallery and Walter McBean Gallery in San Francisco; Jaffe-Fried Gallery at Dartmouth College in Hanover New Hampshire; Duke University School of Law Gallery in Durham; the New York Studio School in New York City; and Washington Art Association in Washington, Connecticut. Her work has also been published in the art and literary journal Zyzzyva. She died 2001 in San Francisco, California, following a six-year battle with cancer.
Melissa Brown Show to Open New Lee Hansley Gallery Lee Hansley Gallery, which has been in downtown Raleigh for over 24 years, will open in October in a warehouse development known as Dock 1053 at 1053 East Whitaker Mill Road at Atlantic Avenue. The first exhibition in the new space will be a solo show of the work of the late Melissa Brown of Raleigh. Born in Jacksonville, North Carolina, Melissa studied at Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, and graduated magna cum laude from Dartmouth College in 1993. Following graduation, she was chosen as a teaching fellow at Dartmouth and awarded the James B. Reynolds Scholarship for post-graduate work abroad. The scholarship enabled her to paint and to study the history of aboriginal art and culture in Australia. Melissa has also won several awards, grants and fellowships including the Andover Art Award, a Richter Memorial Trust

311 Gallery Celebrating the Art of Photography Oct 6 - Oct 29, 2016 Is photography art? This question has been around since the camera was invented and there is still much debate. Since I am a photographer with a limited word count, I will concentrate on the yea side. Start with the adage that the best camera is the one you have with you; if you don’t have a camera, you miss the moment. A second adage to remember is that a great photographer can make a great image whatever the camera and a bad photographer will still make a bad photo with a top of the line camera. Why are these true? How do they impact my argument that photography is art? It’s all about learning to see and understanding good composition; the crux of all fine art. Great art shares the vision of the artist, elevates the imagination, and pushes the viewer to view the world differently. Great photographers, like great artists, apply the tools available to them to create an image that stirs our soul. I hope you will agree, photography is ART. Telling a story through images is important to me. I find drawing too time consuming; collecting source material (photography) is fun, drawing is not. With hand coloring, I skip the drawing and jump right into the
application of color! Black and white photographs are my foundation, enhanced with layers of transparent colored pencils. Time saved is time well spent doing research and planning the next source collecting experience! My friend David Spector quit his job in February to become a full time photographer. His explanation is simple: “Photography is a deep passion for me. I am always happier when I have a camera in my hand.” David loves to shoot a wide range of subjects including landscapes and people but his favorite subject is abandoned buildings. Profiles in Art Amy Grant Amy Grant has recently founded Art in Bloom, an amazing art gallery in Wilmington, North Carolina which carries an incredible array of high quality art. A must see for any patron. We recently sat down with Amy and discussed her introduction to art and her gallery. What was your introduction to art? My mother, Hannah Barr Grant was a classically trained artist with a wonderful sense of humor and an eye for composition and color. She made sure my sister and I had paint, clay, pastels, paper, pencils, ink, watercolors, and whatever materials we needed to create art. Some of my first memories are of my mother drawing cats meandering from the back to the front of the paper with the cats becoming smaller as they faded into the distance. When I asked her what you could see from an airplane window, my mother drew a picture. She literally and creatively taught me about perspective. Years later when I learned about the art and science of perspective in art class, I realized my mother had taught me about art by doing. What a gift. What brought you to owning your own gallery? I studied and created art during my childhood and for a few years after college. I went into science as a career in the biopharmaceutical industry but would visit art galleries, studios, and museums around the world and US when my company would send me to London, Copenhagen, and other parts of the world on business. I love how Art and Science are connected and planned to open an art gallery when I was ready to leave the biopharmaceutical industry. Art in Bloom has a incredible portfolio of artists; what is your vision for the gallery?
Our focus is to show only original art by international and national artists and to serve as a crossroad for creativity and other connections that happen when people explore art and exchange ideas. How do you select the artists you choose to represent? I have scheduled featured artists and exhibits through 2019 at 210 Princess Street, Wilmington, NC at this time. I still look at new art and enjoy meeting new artists on my day off (Monday). I especially enjoy visiting art studios to see the art in person. I jury art formally once a year in January. Art in Bloom has a website at www. aibgallery.com. And, we show art in other venues and work to place art in public and private venues. How do you see Art in Bloom in 5 years? The first anniversary of Art in Bloom Gallery is Oct 1, 2016. By Oct 2020, I see Art in Bloom Gallery benefiting from experience but still creating a dynamic, ever-changing space for art, artists, customers, and others in the community. I see our community involvement continuing. In five years, I believe things will be somewhat the same in that the gallery is ever changing, i.e., new art, events, community service, and technology. Using oils, she attempts to create an atmospheric relationship between values, experimenting with edges, textures, lines, and colors in an effort to communicate these intrinsic qualities. Laurie’s hope is that her work allows the viewer to get a glimpse of the unique personal beauty, which she believes holds the essence of being, found within her subject. Jo Farris Lagerquist Gallery Atlanta, Georgia Georgia artist, Jo Farris was fortunate as a child to travel across the United States. Cities capture her heart. They have a pulse that undulates with traffic and teeming pedestrians as witnessed in her oil paintings. She began her formal education at the Mississippi State College for Women painting in the realist tradition. Her studies continued at the University of South Alabama which provided her a firm understanding of abstraction. It is these two traditions which give her current paintings an edginess with rhythm and movement... an authenticity without explicit definition. Her familiar subjects create a mystery through her use of transparencies, stained applications, and areas of excavations. There is a seduction of the surface as she paints pulling the viewer closer. Ms Farris has received numerous awards. Her work graces homes and businesses across America’s heartland.

J. Austin Jennings Lagerquist Gallery Atlanta, Georgia J Austin Jennings sees life in layers. First, subtle spines of under-structure, then the visceral movement of shape and form. Next transparent layers of light and shadow emerge. Jennings work is an intricate arrangement of layers, balanced in a manner that allows the viewer to glimpse each subsequent stratum through the final coat. “There is a type of intuitive including or dismissing of the details before me. Gradually comes the dawning of soft colors, layered across the foreground and fading to the distant. I choose versatile acrylic mediums, mixed and manipulated with transparent washes, structural applications and broad flat strokes of pure color.” Jennings was educated at The Dayton Art Institute and Sinclair College, Dayton Ohio. She later studied photography and graphic design at Ohio Institute of Photography. She currently makes her home in Knoxville, TN, near the mountains she’s always loved and painted. Her work is selected by the most discerning designers and can be found in homes and collections across the United States.

Beau Wild Lagerquist Gallery Atlanta, Georgia As a native Floridian, Beau Wild was educated at Tufts University in Occupational Therapy and at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in painting, both in Boston, Massachusetts. Dual roles as therapist and painter spanned decades and each enhanced the success of the other. She returned to her childhood hometown of Daytona Beach and today, paints daily in her “Hidden Bay Studio” along Rose Bay in Port Orange, Florida. One of my essential questions is the issue of visibility and invisibility – how much to offer, how much to obscure and where is the point at which this hangs in the balance? While I assume the objective position of the observer, these glimpses open a small window through which I also look inside my own emotional life. Beau Wild has won numerous awards, including Best In Show, since first showing her work in 1965. Fran Gardner’s book Between The Seen & The Unseen” published in 2014 reviews Beau’s 30 years of figurative drawings & paintings.

When Linda Hollett-Bazouzi reflects on her painting, she gravitates towards the story. Each painting has its own story, and often that story is told within the context of a larger story of travel and adventure. Whether it is postponing a trip to England because of a volcano, getting to Tunisia in the middle of the night because of a late plane, or having a near miss with a Venice canal, events like this inform her work. She has fought wind, rain, and sand to paint on the beaches of Holland, and gotten stopped by security because of her paints. While resting on the streets of Cairo, she has been offered alms. After a successful 40 year career as a graphic designer, Tega Cay, SC based artist Todd Baxter has returned to his first love, drawing and painting. He is grateful to be able to pursue his passion and to have the opportunity to do what he loves doing, every day. Todd specializes in portraits, landscapes, and seascapes.
Elinor Bowman moved to Asheville, North Carolina, in 2002, and took up the study and practice of art. After careers in business she found a passion in art. Her favorite subjects have been people, though she also enjoys painting still lifes and landscapes.
With his representational approach to oil painting, Todd strives to faithfully capture on canvas the truth and beauty he sees all around him. He chooses to be positive and focus on all that is good and uplifting in life. Whether it’s a rusty old truck, a vanishing tobacco barn, or a unique face, there’s beauty everywhere to be captured and shared. Todd is represented by Providence Gallery in Charlotte, NC. He also teaches weekly oil painting classes and is available for commissions, demos, and workshops.
One day, after painting many live models in oil, she decided to “have some fun”. She painted a few paintings that day with ground Chinese ink, and continued for a while. Later, she began using watercolor in the live model sessions, and then black walnut ink. She loves the looseness and spontaneity of watercolor and ink, the resulting almost abstract expression, while still being recognizable as people. Experimenting with different mediums— ink, watercolor and oil—has interested her. Her current figurative work is primarily done from live models. She is a retired professor and lifelong artist with an MFA from the University of Oregon. Janette is the recipient of two prestigious Fulbright Scholarships from Denmark and the United States. She has taught in Denmark, Germany, and the United States. Her work has been shown and collected extensively in museums, public venues, colleges and universities, and in private galleries in Germany, France, The Netherlands, Canada, Bulgaria, Italy, Denmark, and the United States. Janette’s art stems from a close observation of nature on location. She believes that the artist must have a deep experience of and connection with what she paints. The viewer often recognizes something in a work. It is not about an exact rendition of a location but rather a sense of place.

Featured Artist Don Mertz What was your path to becoming an abstract artist? A slow one—starting at The Art Institute of Pittsburgh, then the Marines, then Corporate America for 25 years in NYC. I spent countless hours in galleries and museums. Abstract Expression art eventually inspired me to want to create that style of art myself. I left corporate life, moved to NC, and became what I always knew I should be--an Artist. What is your most memorable response to your work? instead of my usual pallet knife? In The WHITE Series I created compositions by slathering shades of white paint, creating textures, and adding marks. Final surfaces are turbulent, white landscapes. Yet the tranquility inherent in white creates a sense of serenity.

Brown is a native North Carolinian who lived most of her short life in Raleigh. She studied art at Dartmouth College and earned an MFA in painting at the San Francisco Art Institute.
