Urban Landscapes Explored The contrasting power and frailty of urban landscapes are for many of us awe inspiring masses of labor and creation stemming from human engineering and ingenuity. Artists’ vision of urban landscapes are as diverse as an ever-changing environment from one second to the next as the movement of temporary, live elements alter the interactions between buildings and people. Two vastly different Raleigh, North Carolina-based artists discuss urban landscapes and this genres’ pull on their creative avenues of expression.

Nicole White Kennedy’s work showcases her acute understanding of how to properly use composition, edges, shapes, light, and shadows to exorcise the emotional ambiance of her figurative subjects which are set against urban themes. “The juxtaposition of structures against the fluid movement of people allows me to create an urban scene with a narrative flair”,

says Kennedy. Her masterful way of illustrating a “story unfolding”, as Kennedy puts it, allows the viewer to imagine the story behind the painting. Kennedy’s powerful use of lively colors and controlled tonal balance draws viewers into her paintings’ narratives and allows one to experience her imagery, thereby “falling” into the conveyed occurrences as if the viewer is seeing what she sees at the same time, at the same place.

“I like drama. While I paint just about every subject matter including nature, urban landscapes have an inherent energy even if it¹s just static buildings”, says Kennedy when discussing urban landscapes as opposed to natural landscapes. The fluidity of movements throughout Kennedy’s works captures this energy through carefully choreographed snap shots that convey varying degrees of emotional responses. These emotional responses from humane interactions and seemingly fragile movements set against the stoic, powerful assemblage of urban architecture immediately draw the viewer to Kennedy’s urban wonderland.

“I love the scale of urban industrial landscapes. They remind me of how large the world is and how small we are in relationship to everything around us” says Sarah Powers, whose works’ palette and simplicity invoke the hidden power and influence of urban landscapes. “I am really interested in what humans are capable of and the built environment is a reminder of our intellect and ambition”, says Powers.

“Seeing roads engineered to scale great heights or experiencing the vastness of an industrial complex he[sic] infrastructure and scale of our cities is inspiring”.

That inspiration is used to introduce viewers to an alternative, minimalist interpretation that showcases the, as Powers says, “space, simplicity, scale and industry of the urban landscape”. Her works invoke an abstractly urban theme masked in minimalist tones. Sharp lines, mixed with subtle hidden mediums bring

forth the busyness of urban life, while final editing leaves just a simplified landscape, denoting a naked reminder of the inherent peacefulness of our basic engineering prowess. “I pare down the details of the landscape in my painting process to try and recreate those quiet moments”, says Powers. These quieter moments which are subtle, yet ever present in her work remind us that there is still an uncompounded thematic peace in our urban world.

The two aforementioned artists’ contradictory styles have exposed the conceptual similarities in the many ways we view urban landscapes. Whether it’s expounding the beauty of urban landscapes’ surface interactions with its participants or introducing viewers to its bare beauty through minimalist structures, artists have stoked our natural appreciation for our unnatural surroundings.

An Art Scene Unto Itself 311 Gallery, Raleigh, NC A regularly irregular gallery, the space occupying 311 West Martin Street has become an arts scene unto itself. Rotating monthly shows of juried artists and invited artists, a regularly rotated gift shop, 12 resident artist studios, each showcasing and rotating their unique art, and 3 cooperative art groups (Tipping Paint Gallery, Local Color Gallery, and Distilled Arts) all occupy this fantastic space with a warehouse ambiance reminiscent of the art spaces of early 1980’s SOHO, New York.

Having recently acquired the space in December 2014, owner Allen Clapp immediately went about transforming 311 to his vision, “I wanted to expand the breadth of art types exhibited in the gallery, improve the overall experience for patrons visiting the gallery, and to turn the gift shop into an attractive feature to help draw patrons to the gallery”, says Clapp, who himself maintains a studio at the space.

Maintaining a vibrant and diverse resident artist selection has been studiously attended to by Clapp. “The Resident Artists have been carefully chosen over time to provide a wide range of art choices...”, says Clapp. A wide range of art styles and techniques perfumigate from the resident artist studios and offer patrons a tasteful and well choreographed display of alternating themes, diverse genres, and non-homogenous works of art, all caked in an aroma of oil paints and acrlics, luring art patrons with its savory, artistically sensory flavors. Clapp

encourages “resident artists to continue to update and keep their individual studios fresh. Some of the studios change their exhibited works completely every month, so the First Friday visits are really starting to get a lot of buzz from patrons.”

A busy exhibit schedule is paramount to keeping 311 relevant in the eyes and ears of arts patrons.

311 Gallery has monthly shows of juried artists or invited artists that change the weekend before First Friday. “In 2015, half of the year is devoted to juried artists and half to invited artists”, says Clapp.

Winners of the Juried Shows come back for a Winners Show in December. The 2015 Invited Artists are each regionally, nationally, or internationally known artists with distinctive painting styles. Dan Nelson, Joe DiGiulio, and Simon Griffiths are but some of the names dropping into 311 to showcase their work.

311 Gallery has undergone several transformations over the past several decades culminating in its current adventurously sojournic location. Genres, styles, techniques, and tastes all beckon patrons to this stylistically voluptuous space. Raleigh arts scene, Warehouse Arts Dsitrict, and now we have the 311 arts space - too much happening to simply call a gallery.

Profiles - ArtSource Fine Art ArtSource is an award-winning fine art gallery and consulting firm located in the Midtown Area of Raleigh, NC. Manager in Chief Torey Mishoe, FRANK Gallery FRANK has one person on staff that manages the day-to-day elements, which allows much more of the artists’ time and energy to be put into other areas of the gallery and their own artwork. In addition to being a collective, FRANK is a non-profit with a mission of supporting the local arts community and promote a vibrant downtown Chapel Hill through exhibits, events, programs, and educational outreach. Torey Mishoe, manager of FRANK Gallery discusses the perks and trials of managing a collective.

Collective vs. one-owner gallery?

An important element of my role in the collective is people management. The organization relies on everyone involved to play a part - artist members, board members, interns, and volunteers - 3540 people at any given time. Everyone serves on a committee that contributes to FRANK as a whole. Committees manage everything - exhibitions, curating, event planning, etc. My role differs from a more traditional gallery manager in that I am responsible for making sure all of those committees, tasks, and people all continue moving forward harmoniously. While I also sell artwork, function as an office and marketing manager, and manage the basic accounting and daily business needs of the business, I also have a hand in everything that goes on with everyone else at FRANK. Everyone has their niche and it is my responsibility, in addition to the more “traditional” tasks, to make sure that they all stay in balance with one another.

How do you keep it fair?

Each Member is given a month-long featured exhibition in rotation for as long as it takes us to get through them all.

Once we determine who is next for a featured show, they become part of the planning committee and work with us to

pair them with a small group (1-3) of artists. Sometimes these are themed, other times they just beautifully complement each other and that’s worth displaying.

Occasionally we will give someone a solo show, like our current exhibition of local favorite Elaine O’Neil. We try our best to give space to a wide variety of artists each year.

What do you love about it?

I have been at FRANK for better than 3 years now, and every day I come to work and get to spend time with these artists. I enjoy getting to know them, talking to them about their work, and then sharing that with the public. It’s easy to put together an artist statement about someone’s body of work and recite that to anyone who walks in the door, but being able to share with them how the artists felt when they make the work, or what inspired them, or a funny story that happened while they were making it adds so much to the art buying experience.

Working with the artists on a personal level, is by far the best part of my job.

Everyone here is like a big family, they care deeply about one another and each other’s success. It’s just such a wonderful environment to be a part of. _________________________________ Torey Mishoe has been the manager of FRANK Gallery since 2012.

What results for both artists is a continuous narrative about what’s being made and who’s making it.

Viewers and “followers” are drawn into the storytelling experience through imagery and words, which are what make Instagram such a successful storytelling platform. The same is true of using Facebook, a blog or email marketing to share the experience of your art and brand, regularly.

When storytelling marketing is an extension of your art, it becomes more like an invitation to come inside and explore. It’s not pushy—it’s enchanting and engaging.

It’s also not a one-time event that’s here today, gone tomorrow. Instead, it lives on people’s mobile devices, computers, and tablets. And it’s all curated by the artist.

One of the most effective ways to create marketing communications that inspire and motivate your audience is to give yourself time to develop it. A new body of paintings by Raleigh artist Luke Miller Buchanan is on display this month at Lee Hansley Gallery. The new works will be shown in tandem with some paintings in Buchanan’s familiar style.

These new works, not unlike his prior paintings, are mixed media and incorporate site specific photography that forms the ground for his painting.

Buchanan’s works typically are romanticized images of abandoned spaces.

They evoke an emotional, nostalgic response from the viewer. He describes his works as “memories of time and space.”

Randall W. L. Mooers, an accomplished still life painter working and exhibiting in New York City, will have his first North Carolina exhibition, an exuberant and beautifully detailed series entitled A Good Day for a Parade, at Tyndall Galleries in Chapel Hill, NC. Still life has historically been centered around memento mori, with the fleeting beauty of fruit, flowers, and even insects serving as a reminder of our natural life cycle. Mooers is able to appropriate these symbols into a celebration of life, expressing his sense of humor through his titles and the imaginative interactions between his objects.

“The idea of a painting comes from the space first,” Buchanan said of his subjects. He visits a site and photographs it from many different perspectives and angles. He arranges the photographs on a picture plane in a montage format before he begins to paint. Some parts of the photographs show through the paint and some areas are painted over completely.

It is often difficult for the viewer to discern what is painted and what is a photograph.

This style of work enhances the depth perception in his pieces, according to gallery owner Lee Hansley, who has known Buchanan since he was at NCSU.

Mooers’ upcoming exhibition gives center stage to a spiny pineapple against a rich, blue sky and glistening cherries riding crisp, crumbling watermelon like valiant cowboys, lassoed in the weighty rope which runs through the series. His symbols of impermanence are unconventional and filled with implications of festivity, half-eaten Reese’s cups and crumbling kernels of popcorn, connecting his audience with the subject matter in a modern context. The conventions of still life become a playful reminder of a life fully lived in Mooers’ eyes, always expressed with exacting detail and luminous color.

CH, NC 27514 and Water & Earth FRANK Gallery, Chapel Hill, NC “Chapel Hill - a place I love - is the focus of this work. I have tried to portray the heart and soul of Chapel Hill, the things we love about this great town, the feelings and memories of good times experienced, and the vibe of learning, teaching, healing, and coming of age here.” These are the words of Elaine O’Neil, famed Chapel Hill artist, and featured artist this month at FRANK Gallery. O’Neil’s solo exhibition, CH, NC 27514, is inspired by memories of special places and the good things that happen here. For O’Neil, depicting a place is more about embodying the essence and the emotionally salient aspects of a location rather than ensuring physical accuracy. She strives to make her pieces LOOK the way you FEEL when you’re there.

Water & Earth is a rich combination of four artists, who are all inspired by the world around them. Their work reflects this theme through both their chosen subjects and their processes. Peg Bachenheimer, Gordon Jameson, Eric Knoche, and Noah Riedel all create from their surroundings - the spaces, feelings, and sounds. This celebrated group of artists has been part of the heart of FRANK for many years, and we are very excited to

present them all together in this special exhibition.

Painters Peg Bachenheimer and Gordon Jameson both continue to evolve as they explore new surfaces and subjects.

Bachenheimer is moving more into the abstract, putting emotion on canvas through color and texture. Jameson is taking a slight departure from his vivid abstracts with more representational subjects. Inspired by reflections in the water, these works take the viewer to the worlds of microcosm and cosmic at once.

Ceramicists Eric Knoche and Noah Riedel are both inspired by their surroundings, creating unique spatial relationships, and pushing the limitations of their materials. Playful functionality plays a key role in Riedel’s work, complemented by Knoche’s sculptural constructs.

Henderson County Open Studio Tour Henderson County, NC As summer slips into fall it is a perfect time to visit artist studios during the annual Open Studio Tour of Henderson County, North Carolina. The tour takes place Saturday and Sunday, September 19-20, from 10am-5pm. Five art corridors fan out from the center of Hendersonville in this self-guided tour of 26 artist studios and 63 artists working in acrylic, watercolor, oil, clay, wood, metal, fiber, glass, and mixed media. Free booklets with directions can be found at the Visitor’s Center and throughout downtown, as well as online at www.OpenStudioTourHC.com. The tour gives visitors an opportunity to meet artists and learn more about the process used to create their work. Demonstrations will be offered at many of the studios and work will be available for purchase.

Two artists on the tour this year include Fred McMullen, a sculptor working primarily in metal and wood. Fred welds many of his pieces and also does sand casting and lost wax casting, using a metal furnace. Old found machine parts are mounted onto salvaged wood for trophy like sculptures.

Susan Barrett says her life’s true calling is pottery. She discovered earthenware while at the University of Arizona at Tucson and her passion for artistic exploration turning earth’s four basic elements into beautiful works of art are still evident in her new work.

Centerfest Arts Festival Durham, NC CenterFest Arts Festival 2015, produced and presented by the Durham Arts Council, will take place on Saturday, September 19 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, September 20 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in downtown Durham. A lifelong love of tools, mechanics, and a background in machining has evolved into his current work which is mostly kinetic in nature, and somewhat abstract in design. Sometimes in Time exhibition is a series of interactive, multi-axial, kinetic sculptures that have been composed using a combination of new metals and salvaged components. The varying shapes, colors, and object placement make each piece unique in its static state, while select pivot placement, careful balancing, and human interaction allow them to dance an original number each time they are touched.

Lori White on a working process I’ve recently been thinking about my working process. For me, deciding what to paint is extremely difficult, because so much captures my attention – Squirrel!

The rule about creating a “consistent body of work” vexes me to no end.

Most of the time I have a camera tethered to me, with which I’m shooting madly, but still trying to be mindful of creatively composing with the viewfinder. Then sorting through literally thousands of photographs, a mind numbing exercise, gets me an image worth painting. I look

for how the light hits the landscape – It’s all about the light and interesting shapes and creating an image that’s so much more interesting than a camera can ever capture.

In the evolution of a painting, it goes through at least one really ugly stage before it appears to have promise. Then there’s knowing when to stop, which is a consistent problem for everyone one I know. Many a painting has been ruined because I just couldn’t let it go. The best part is leaving a painting and coming back to it a day or two later and discovering that there’s something worth framing!
