He taught Art in California and Minnesota and then opened a custom jewelry shop turning client’s ideas and designs into reality using whatever process was appropriate, whether that be lost wax, fabrication, handwrought or other. He is now devoting all his time to his artwork. His work is an exploration of what he calls “Sensual Feminine” the world is full of powerful, sensual images and he tries to make the viewer sense the rich, full sensual images in his paintings and sculptures. The images are far more than the realistic portrayal of a flower, figure, or object. As to his painting work, he observes the world around him, selectively choosing objects that provide him with a powerful

statement. McChesney’s work delves into the world of photorealism, super-photorealism, and hyper-photorealism, blending oils like watercolor; overpainting, layering, and using glazes to create an image.

McChensey’s sculptural works focuses on the exploration of the sensual three dimensional worlds. Choosing bronze to accentuate the intimacy of the viewers experience, McChesney encourages his viewers to touch his works and use the organic, flowing, sensual shapes to engage the viewer.
Eric Serritella is a master of realism expressed through hand-carved ceramic trompe l’oeil birch, charred and weathered log sculptures. His works are internationally recognized and have been exhibited, awarded and collected on five continents for their exquisite design and incredibly realistic textures.
16 Serritella’s works are included in many collections including among others, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Carnegie Museum of Art, and the Mint Museum. He’s contributed to nearly 90 exhibitions and has been represented at the world’s top art and design shows including TEFAF Maastricht (Netherlands), Design Miami/ Basel (Switzerland), Design Miami (Florida), The Salon: Art + Design (NY), SOFA Chicago and The Smithsonian Craft Show. A 2013 cataloged solo show at Jason Jacques Gallery in Manhattan led to additional international recognition. He has been honored by the James Renwick Alliance as the 2016 Distinguished Artist in ceramics at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Shown are two paintings in the traveling show. Artist Carol Creel (“MARBLES”) from Louisiana collects handmade marbles which she combines with her grandmother’s cut glass to create paintings. “The bold colors of the marbles follow the sleek lines of the cut glass giving the illusion of liquid color. This liquid color creates visual appeal.” Artist Mike Kowalski (“OLD WORLD”) from Washington found his subject while strolling through and antique emporium. “This stall with mid morning light streaming in on the collection of old globes was mesmerizing. I wanted to capture a sense of recalling travel in a less modern world, or of some adventure long dreamed about.”
National Watercolor Society Traveling Exhibit October 1 - 30, 2016 Southern Arts Society, Inc. Kings Mountain, NC Southern Arts Society (SASi) in Kings Mountain, NC first hosted the National Watercolor Society (NWS) Traveling Exhibit in 2013 and is excited to see it return to their galleries October 1 through 30, 2016. SASi is the only Southeast location to showcase this amazing collection of water based media. The exhibit consists of 31 paintings by artists from around the world who were selected for the traveling show after being juried into the prestigious NWS International Exhibit held in San Pedro, California last year. Over 1000 entries were submitted into last year’s competition, with 6 countries being represented in the traveling show alone.

LA VIE BOHÉME Ken Van Sickle SOCO Gallery, Charlotte, NC Charlotte, North Carolina – SOCO Gallery is thrilled to present LA VIE BOHÈME, a retrospective exhibition with New Yorkbased photographer, Ken Van Sickle. This will be the artist’s first exhibition at SOCO Gallery located at 421 Providence Road in Charlotte, North Carolina. An opening reception will be held on Wednesday, September 7 from 6 – 8pm, followed by an artist talk on Saturday, September 10 beginning at 10:30am. The artist talk will be moderated by the Bechtler Museum curator, Jennifer Edwards. Both events are free and open to the public. As an artist grounded in the importance of an artwork’s composition over its subject, Van Sickle’s images of the romantic, evanescent moments of bohemian life in the 1950s and 1960s survive today as narratives of the post-war world. Van Sickle studied in New York City at the Art Students’ League under the German
avant-garde painter George Grosz, and later in Paris with the Hungarian photographer André Kertész. After several years in Paris, he moved to New York City. The rambunctious, progressive United States to which Van Sickle returned astonished the young artist, whose focus shifted to 1960s America. Van Sickle’s photography has been exhibited nationally and internationally, in prestigious museums such as Galerie Thierry Marlat, Paris, France; Limelight Gallery, New York; and the first photography exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in 1960. SOCO Gallery is a contemporary art space and bookshop based in Charlotte, North Carolina. The gallery provides a thoughtful platform for contemporary art to be experienced, discussed, and acquired. SOCO Gallery produces six exhibitions annually, and exclusively represents artist working locally, nationally, and internationally at the highest levels. Art Destinations
Nestled in the heart of North Carolina, the three cities encompassing the Triangle: Raleigh, Chapel Hill, and Durham, each uniquely and cumulatively creates an amazing assortment of art galleries, art museums, and an incredible amount of quality artists. An Art Destination with large market quality, in a midsize Southern town. Each of the Triangle cities are perfect walking destinations. In Downtown Raleigh there are a handful of great galleries including The Mahler Fine Art. Stroll over to the Warehouse District, which might as well be called the Art District with it’s row of galleries such as 311 Gallery and a contemporary art museum. Lee Hansley Gallery, located north of the Warehouse District on Glenwood Ave is a must visit with exhibits showcasing regional and national artists in a variety of mediums. Durham is a beautifully quaint historic city with remnants of it’s rich Tobacco history. There, you’re bound to be amazed by the variety of art galleries and art exhibitions. Pleiades Gallery is an exquisite gallery
that contains some of the top regional artists. Through This Lens is an unassuming art gallery focusing on photography with exhibitions and artist talks by both nationally and world-renowned photographers. A short drive north of Duke University and you can visit Craven Allen Gallery. This frameshop with a gallery in the basement exhibits works by artists who are collected in major markets throughout the nation. Chapel Hill is centered around UNC Chapel Hill. Triangle, NC Art Destinations Below artGuide has the pleasure of introducing some of the top galleries in the Triangle area. They hail from all the main cities encompassing the area - Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill. We’ve also listed an amazing abstract artist, trained in New York City. We’ve been fortunate to feature these amazing galleries during a month when many of them have national and world-renowned artists exhibiting in their spaces. From clay, to photography, to paintings, many of the below galleries are exhibiting names that are recognizable in major art markets; a true testament to the thriving art scene in the Triangle area.
1. Craven Allen Gallery, gallery. Durham, NC cravenallengallery.com 1106 ½ Broad St, Durham, NC 919.286.4837 Craven Allen Gallery in Durham features rotating exhibitions as well as a selection of artworks by local artists working in a variety of media including photography, painting, sculpture, ceramics, and prints. The gallery began as a labor of love as part of the picture framing business House of Frames, in 1968. Some of the nationally known artists represented include Damian Stamer, whose evocative landscapes are currently featured in Altered Land at the NC Museum of Art; the photographer and architect Phil Freelon; and Beverly McIver, subject of the HBO Documentary Raising Renee. McIver is widely acknowledged as a significant presence in contemporary American art and has charted a new direction as an
African American woman artist; she was named as one of the “Top Ten in Painting” in Art in America. Opening on October 1st is Cuba Now, photography by Elizabeth Matheson, recipient of the North Carolina Award for Excellence in the Arts—the state’s highest civilian honor. Matheson’s enigmatic new photographs explore the country she finds “...deeply and soulfully beautiful, filled with both melancholy and irrepressible delight.” Gallery favorite Sue Sneddon follows in November with Life Size, featuring paintings of the NC coast. 2. Lee Hansley Gallery, gallery. Raleigh, NC leehansleygallery.com 225 Glenwood Ave, Raleigh, NC 919.828.7557 Claude Howell and his printmaker, Carson Tredgett of Charlotte, are reunited this month in an exhibition at Lee Hansley Gallery. It is the last exhibition in the Glenwood South space. The gallery is moving in the fall to 1053 East Whitaker Mill Road. Claude and Carson began their collaborative venture in 1978 and produced a total of ten serigraphs together. The images were all based on Howell paintings. Producing the serigraphs required close collaboration between artist and printer. Each print has between 38-46 colors, meaning a silkscreen film was made for each color. A single pass of ink was made per color as it was transferred to paper. Howell was allowed final say before prints could be signed and released for sale. Tredgett’s set of master prints are numbered 1/1 printer’s proof. Tredgett is a native of Leicester, England. At age 16 he went to work for a master printer and by age 20 he was shop manager at a major commercial printing house. He moved to Charlotte in 1977 and set up his own business in 1979 which he ran for 35 years. Tredgett will discuss his relationship with Howell and explain the printing process at a gallery talk on Sept. 11 at 3 p.m.

Raleigh, NC www.themahlerfineart.com 228 Fayetteville St, Raleigh, NC 919.896.7503 This October The Mahler Fine Art is proud to present a large pot installation by Daniel Johnston. Johnson’s large pot installations marry the art of pottery with the worldly gratification of senses by creating differing light and composition environments. “After several years spent producing and selling large jars, I challenged myself to make a series of 100 human-scale vessels which I displayed in a single line spanning a quarter mile. Upon completion, I saw the vessels accompanied by multitudes of patrons in a harmonious line with their shadows cast perfectly parallel upon the ground. At that moment I saw the project in a context spanning the distance between the traditional object and the ephemeral experience. It struck me that I had found the place for my work to live conceptually in this culture - as installations.” Johnson’s site-specific conceptual installation houses his large pots (as many as 30 large vessels) in a structure evoking a rural shrine, teahouse or the shell of a massive kiln. The plank and board structure allows light to softly illuminate the glaze of the pots while creating shadow and line across the surroundings. The experience is one of beauty, peace, and reverence. Opening Sept 14, with a First Friday Reception on Oct 7, the exhibit run through Oct 20. 4. Don Mertz, artist. Cary, NC dmertz@nc.rr.com 919.434.7040 Don Mertz’s path to becoming an artist was a slow one. From The Art Institute of Pittsburgh, to the Marines, to 25 years of Corporate America. Living in New York City, he spent many hours in galleries and
museums. Becoming increasingly inspired by Abstract Expressionism, his desire to create art was reawakened, and he began classes at The Art Students’ League of NY. He decided to leave corporate life, move to North Carolina, and finally become what he always knew he was--an Artist. Represented in Raleigh by ArtSource, and in Morehead City by Vision Gallery, his award-winning abstract art has been in many juried and solo-shows. Mertz’s way of creating art is an appealing one. Today he continues to produce new work in his darkroom. Even today Mr. Uelsmann’s work is strictly analog, but hardly old school. Most work will be available for purchase and all will be remarkable examples of the highest level of imagination and skill. Mr. Uelsmann received his BFA from Rochester Institute of Technology in fine
art photography as a member of the golden class of 1957. He later received advanced degrees from Indiana University. His teaching career began at the University of Florida in Gainesville in 1960 and taught there until his retirement. He continues to live and make art in Gainesville. Uelsmann has more than 20 publications to his credit and has exhibited his photographs in more than 100 US and international venues. His photographs can be found in the permanent collections of Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Chicago Art Institute, the Bibliotheque National in Paris, and too many others to list. Jerry Uelsmann’s work will be on display from Friday, September 16, 6-9 PM through Saturday, October 15, 2016. CenterFest Arts Festival Saturday, September 17. 10-6pm Sunday, September 18, 11-5pm Downtown Durham CenterFest Arts Festival 2016, produced and presented by the Durham Arts Council, will take place on Saturday, September 17 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, September 18 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in downtown Durham. The festival embraces the city center, including the Five Points and CCB Plazas and will showcase the work of a record number of artists: 140 talented visual artists and crafts people and over 650 performers on six stages. The Kids Zone, delicious food, a Beer Garden and multiple community nonprofits and service providers fill out the vibrant festival offerings.

She is an award winning, nationally exhibited and internationally collected artist. Armacost’s work is inspired by nature and her surroundings, and is rooted in expressing feelings that can’t be put into words. Natural Lines exhibition will showcase Oleson’s handcrafted, functional furniture. His woodwork is contemporary and highly influenced by some of the biggest names in the medium, including Michael Fortune and George Nakashima. Oleson describes his work as function meets natural forms, and focuses on its inherent colors and patterns of each piece of wood to create a one of a kind work. Paintings, Photographs, Friendship Paintings, Photographs, Friendship emphasizes the uncertain boundary that separates writers and artists. This month long exhibition features the paintings and photography of two good friends and Triangle legends, who are each in their own way, blurring the boundary of writer and artist – famed NC author, Clyde Edgerton, and acclaimed NC photographer, John Rosenthal. Kinetic Art: Shaping Time Sept 1 - Oct 1, 2016 E = mc² and art blend together to create Kinetic Art. Wikipedia defines kinetic art as “art from any medium that contains movement perceivable by the viewer or depends on motion for its effect.” Physics explains that an object in motion maintains kinetic energy until its speed changes. If it is powered by the wind or an observer, its speed is constantly changing, creating mesmerizing patterns of light and shadow, color, and shapes. Taking the time to observe this type of sculpture in motion is hypnotic, inducing a state of meditation. What a wonderful way to combat the stresses of everyday living! I recently had the opportunity to spend an evening with some of Kevin Duval’s sculptures. I found myself entranced by the changing designs and enjoyed watching how passersbys couldn’t help but stop and touch and play with the art. The experience had a way of slowing life down, even if just for the moment. The Shaping Time exhibit is a series of interactive, multi-axial, kinetic sculptures that have been composed using a combination of new metals and salvaged components.
The varying shapes, colors, and object placement make each piece unique in its static state, while select pivot placement, careful balancing, and human interaction allow them to dance an original number each time they are touched. Kevin Duval is an emerging, self taught metal artist. A lifelong love of tools, mechanics, and a background in machining has evolved into his current work which is mostly kinetic in nature, and somewhat abstract in design. Working with many different metals and components affords Kevin the opportunity to use a myriad of tools and techniques in the composition of original, one of a kind sculptures. Kevin lives in Wilmington, NC with his wife, and two young daughters.

Lydia Gasman was a renowned Picasso scholar and beloved Professor of Modern Art at the University of Virginia. She revolutionized Picasso studies with her wide ranging and powerful readings of Picasso’s work in relation to his life and the history of the 20th century.
Cousart focuses on traditional subject matter with a fresh, contemporary look that has an abstract edge to it. She also enjoys painting from life and the play of light and shadow and the effect that it has on color and value. Strumpf is recognized by her distinctive style in her popular “Red Umbrella” European and New York City-scapes. Like Cousart, she also loves painting En Plein Air, and traveling whenever possible to inspire her artwork. When she passed away, she left a treasure trove of books and manuscripts to two of her former doctoral students, who then founded the non-profit Lydia Csato Gasman Archives to preserve and share her brilliant scholarly legacy with a wider audience. The biannual fundraiser for the LCGA will take place on September 24 at Les Yeux du Monde amidst work by Picasso, Gasman, and other important artists. The theme Picasso in Three Dimensions was inspired by the 2015 MOMA exhibition of Picasso’s sculpture and by Gasman’s ground-breaking readings of Picasso’s art and writings in spatial and cosmic terms.
