because every little girl wants to look like a princess on her wedding day…. By Gemma Hallowell The way you look and feel on your wedding day should never be left to chance, so I’ll take you through some of the most important things to consider when choosing your bridal make up look. Firstly, whether you choose to apply your own make up or hire the services of a professional Make Up Artist (MUA), your skin should be your first priority so its in the best condition it can be to allow for flawless make up application. Drinking as much water as possible really does make a difference, aim for 1.5 litres each day to reach maximum hydration. Your skincare routine should consist of twice daily cleanse, tone and moisturise with weekly exfoliation and mask to really boost your radiance. If you are undergoing a course of facials, leave at least a fortnight between your last facial and your wedding date to allow your skin to settle down and to avoid any dreaded breakouts. Once your skin is looking great, it’s time to think about your look. If you are hiring a professional MUA book them as soon as possible. Starting with a chat on the phone to discuss your requirements, then followed by a trial, which takes 2-2.5 hours. The trial begins with a consultation about the look you want (magazine pictures and photographs are very helpful), the theme/
colours of your wedding, your current skin-care routine, any allergies you have to cosmetics, how much make up you normally wear and any look you specifically don’t want. Any changes you want to make can then be carried out so that you are completely satisfied with your finished look. By this point you should have built up a good rapport with your artist and feel able to mention anything you’re not entirely satisfied with. Having a trial also allows you to ensure your make up will last all day with minimal touch-ups and to check you don’t have any adverse reactions to the products used. If you are considering a tan for your wedding, please avoid sunbeds at all costs; tanning products are so advanced now that you don’t need to damage your skin with UV. Have a trial tan and as the tan fades, note the day when its the right intensity for you. You can then book your tan the right number of days before your wedding to get the shade you want. Before choosing a make up artist always ask to see their portfolio. A good artist can work with any skin age, type and coloring to make it look as flawless as possible without you feeling caked in make up. I can’t stress enough the importance of good hygiene when having your make up applied. Disposable applicators should be used for cosmetics such as mascara and liquid eyeliner to avoid cross-infection and brushes used for liquid products must be thoroughly cleansed and sanitised. An experienced MUA will have built up their kit to include the best quality products and brushes, their knowledge and skill will usually be reflected in their prices. You should be confident that your bridal look is in good hands, enabling you to relax knowing that on the day you will look as beautiful as possible. Letting you savor every moment of getting ready for your big day.

Wedding plants Much has been written about wedding flowers, here we look at using foliage plants instead. Creating themes using plants Beaches: Use palms with sand or Hessian to disguise the planters. Jungles: Using palms and bamboos works well. Bamboos are more cost effective. Rainforests: Similar to jungles, but using less easily identified plants. Adding old tree stumps, branches, mosses, leaves, trailing creepers etc. adds to the atmosphere. Italian: Use olive trees, topiary and lavender. Northern Italy add hydrangeas, azaleas, rhododendrons. Southern Italy add Agave, Aloe vera and Opuntia. English: Use plants chosen according to the season for maximum impact. Parks & Woodlands: Can vary from sparse to densely filled. Use native trees, ferns, rhododendrons and a variety of foliage plants. Disguised planters by using branches smaller foliage, dead leaves & artificial grass. General Plant Usage Topiary: Works well as a formal or semi formal basis. Screening off areas: Many plants work well, especially bamboo. Wedding arches: Evergreen arches are constructed on a steel frame and covered in
Ivy, they are very sturdy and can be decorated with more flowers. Floral arches are made with cut flowers and foliage. Using plants for greenery: with no theme you can pick a plant you like the look of. Budgets Low: Think minimalist, use carefully planned designs and stay away from using large heavy plants, which are expensive because they are difficult to transport. Plants offer greater value for money than flowers but have a limited range of colours available. Medium: See low budget. High: Anything is possible.
