There is also the first Great British Greyhound Walk on Sunday 20th June 2010 at 10am. This will see simultaneous walks at over 40 locations around the country as a celebration of the breed. Designed to raise awareness of the thousands of greyhounds that retire from racing and need re-homing every year. Amanda Ainsworth from the RGT told me “People have a lot of misconceptions about greyhounds but they make great family pets and take their retirement very seriously” If you would like to find out more about the Great British Greyhound Walk please contact Sue Edwards on 07875 783101 who is organising a greyhound walk starting at Kingston Playing Field, Woodbridge. The walk will last for about an hour walking along to Kyson Point and then along the river. After the walk they will have a picnic and some games on the playing field. A quick note on my progress at Bentwaters Sudio – bad news this month I’m afraid. I was struck down by that horrible lurgy so haven’t been able to attend. I am really looking forward to getting back there next week though!

Bittersweet Symphonies The music of Nathan Williamson Last month’s article on the music scene in Suffolk introduced Nathan Williamson, the artistic director and driving force behind the recently instigated Southwold Concert series. But learning that Nathan is in the middle of writing an Opera and will be staging a section of it in Southwold this month was far to intriguing for me to leave it at an introduction so I popped up there to find out more about the man and his music. Nathan started composing as a child, he says, “I had an incredibly enlightened piano teacher, Mr Branch who used to encourage me to compose; he told me that composing would help me to learn more about other composer’s music, well I tried to compose a couple of times and I always found it incredibly frustrating, I could never get the sound that I could hear in my head. Then when I was 12, I composed something, one afternoon I had this idea and I started to write and a couple of hours later I looked down and I had written 6 bars of music. But I had no idea how I’d written them, it was as if someone else had done it, I had no conscious recollection of writing them – there was nobody else in the room so it must have been me! Mr Branch was entirely right - learning to compose meant I could play any music I heard and my ability to play improved dramatically.” From then on he was just hooked and all his spare time was focussed on composing. He is currently working on an Opera called ‘A Fountain Sealed’, it is a collaboration with a writer called Thomas Walton and is based on “’Tis Pity” a play written by John Ford 1624 about a brother and sister that fall in love. It all started when he was studying in America at Yale University and was awarded a prize that could only be spent on a project. At the same time in the States the first openly gay bishop was ordained, the reaction to this was very intense, it

caused a great deal of division and that made an impression on him that made him want to write an opera which would somehow involve both the church and the whole notion of forbidden love. He says “Our opera is about the social taboo’s that have always and still exist, in a social sense you can pretty much get away with doing whatever you want to do these days – you can be anonymous. But it’s much harder to reconcile these things within yourself. That was what we wanted to show – that people do have conflicts that they have a hard time resolving.” A performance of the prologue and Act 1 of this remarkable piece is the next thing coming up in the Southwold Concert Series. It promises to be a very interesting evening and quite possibly the first staging of a contemporary opera in Southwold. After a similar staging in London Rupert Christiansen wrote in the Daily Telegraph “the unabashed romanticism of both the theme and the music proved rather thrilling” Nathan urges people to come along and hear for themselves he says ‘It’s a great opportunity to try something different, to hear this outstanding cast of singers – all professionals, for just £10 is incredible value, you can’t usually get an evening out for that.” The Southwold Concert Series is something that Nathan is extraordinarily passionate about, he

5 By: Gemma Thompson told me “what I really wanted to do was to do something regular that would really have an impact on this area musically. Southwold receives quite a lot of attention and of course there’s a lot of holiday makers here but there’s also has a very strong, fiercely independent, community, that really cares about how the town works not just for holiday makers but also for the local people. I wanted to tap into that musically. So far we’ve had a great response and there’s so much more we can do. I’ve got endless ideas but it’s not just me –people come to me and ask for particular performers or music. They email me with ideas and requests, it’s not just people coming and listening and going away again, it really is their concert series. We’re building something from the ground up here. We couldn’t do it without our volunteers who help on the day and our sponsors, Spring Advertising, have been amazing too, it wouldn’t happen without them, in fact if anything it was just as much their idea as mine, I knew I wanted to do concerts and I could do that, they knew they could promote them which is just as important really so it was very much a meeting of the minds.” He’s concerned that some people don’t come along as they worry that the music will be too hard to understand and reassuringly points out that “the split between classical music and contemporary music is a false split, for example Dvorak and Brahms were exact contemporaries but they produced very different music, Dvorak was very fresh and clear and fun whereas Brahms was more esoteric, more meditative. Brahms provided a different kind of enjoyment – more of an enrichment but it wasn’t music you’d want to listen to on a Saturday night! Contemporary music such as that by Patrick Nunn is fun, colourful and very accessible, when Mark Simpson came and played him in the Series the audience really loved it.” www.nathanwilliamson.co.uk

Soveriegn Turf If an Englishman’s home is his castle it follows that his garden is his Kingdom! It’s Summertime! A time for every Englishman (or woman!) to get out and enjoy their garden! But for a lot of us the heavy winter will have wreaked havoc on the lawn and instead of being able to sit and relax we are faced with trying to sort out a lacklustre lawn. My quest for a shining knight to rescue my lawn has ended since I met the men at Sovereign Turf the other day. Who better to help than those that have provided turf for Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle! Sovereign Turf Ltd is a local business, which is family owned and run. They are leading turf producers who have been growing turf for gardens and specialist turf application’s since 1988. Some of their other customers include

the Golf courses at Aldeburgh, Thorpeness, Woodbridge and Felixstowe. They can also provide lawns that are tough and resilient (perfect for families!) Ornamental lawns and even lawns that need less watering, making your lawn green in more ways than one! But you don’t necessarily have to relay your whole lawn. Sovereign Turf also provide a lawn care service, Kevin Coulson, head of this division of the company explains “We have a unique knowledge because we produce turf here in Suffolk, we understand what the grass and soil are like in this area and what to do to get a lawn in tip-top condition and keep it there. We started giving advice to our customers as aftercare really but we got more and more requests for help until it became a part of the business in its own right.” Everyone wants to have a great looking, weed free, green lawn but are not sure how to get this. There are many factors that influence a lawns appearance and Sovereign Turf feel it important to understand these before recommending a potential solution. Kevin says “A one cap fits all approach just doesn’t work. It is vital to understand what underlying disease or conditions could be causing

9 By: Gemma Thompson

the unsightly lawn, diseases are treated very differently and a mis-diagnosis and subsequent treatment could do more harm than good. This is why we offer a free, very thorough, lawn survey. Many customers are attracted to the service because they don’t have time to do it themselves, or sometimes because they have tried and failed” He told me that a lot of lawns are suffering this year due to the heavy snows laying for so long. This has caused Fusarium patch disease that almost looks like the kinds of brown spots that a pet might leave on the lawn. This year there has also been a lot of moss and weeds; these unwanted additions to our lawns are unsightly but can easily be controlled with specialist treatment. After analysing the lawn Kevin and Co will then work out exactly what treatment your lawn needs to get it back in tip-top condition and quote you based on what you need only - For a small garden this could be as little as £15 per treatment and as most gardens will only need 4 treatments a year it is excellent value. Kevin told me “The products we apply are all quite specialist and unavailable to the domestic householder. We know how much to put on without scorching the grass or causing rapid growth and causing more problems.” They have a wide variety of fertilisers, all of which mix

different levels of nitrogen, potash and iron. In addition to the nutrition programme Kevin also mentioned additional services such as scarifying and aeration programmes to give the lawn a real treat and helps get the most neglected of lawns back in shape. Sovereign Turf’s expertise means they can start treating a lawn at any time of year and they’ll happily work on the smallest lawns or the largest, the consultation is free and you are under no obligation so why not give them a call and see how much more green and pleasant your land can be!

From trash to treasure Anita Honeyball is melting – and not because of the weather! In fact this talented artist from Suffolk is melting glass. She explains, “My glass jewellery, accessories and blown glass are made from lead crystal, window and bottle glass that I have rescued. I re-melt it in the kiln and turn it into beautiful timeless pieces of wearable art and contemporary glassware. Instead of ending up as trash it ends up as treasure!” It’s obvious that her company, miss honeypie glass, is fully committed to supporting the environment, and with over 10 years experience

in the glass industry she offers a fresh approach to turning scrap glass into bowls, platters, cheeseboards, vases, artworks and jewellery. The nature of her work means that all pieces are unique, so you’re guaranteed never to see the same one again. She has recently exhibited her work in Pond Gallery, Snape Maltings and will also be at this years Art on the Prom, Felixstowe on Sunday 30th August but if you want to see more of her wondrous work now you can pay her website a visit www.misshoneypieglass.com
