A VERY FLORENTINE EASTER UNA PASQUA MOLTO FIORENTINA Florence Scoppio del Carro (explosion of the cart) is a Florentine Easter Sunday trad ition that dates back to the First Crusade. When the Crusaders conquered Jerusalem on 15 th July 1099, the Florentine Pazzino d i Ran ieri de’ Pazzi was the first to raise a Christian ban ner above the city. He was rewarded w ith three chips of stone from the Holy Sepulchre which were later used in Florence during Easter celebrations to light the fire symbolising new life. The fire was then d istributed around the city by a cart, where families would relight their hearths which were trad itionally ex ting uished on Good Friday. This trad ition is reported as early as 1102. However, the Pazzi family were stripped of all their wealth and privileges and exiled from Florence after their aborted attempt to overthrow the Med ci in 1478. Continues on page 2 >>>

Lo Scoppio del Carro di Firenze è una tradizione fiorentina le cui origini risalgono alla prima crociata, che ha luogo la domenica di Pasqua. Quando i crociati conquistarono Gerusalemme il 15 luglio 1099, il fiorentino Pazzino di Ranieri de’ Pazzi è stato il primo ad innalzare un simbolo cristiano sulla città. Egli fu ricompensato con tre pietre del sepolcro sacro, che furono in seguito utilizzate a Firenze durante le celebrazioni di Pasqua per accendere una fiamma, simbolo di vita nuova. Il fuoco veniva quindi distribuito in giro per la città tramite un carro, così le famiglie potevano riaccendere i propri focolari, che per tradizione venivano spenti il venerdì di Pasqua. Questa tradizione viene riportata già nel 1102. Tuttavia, alla famiglia Pazzi vennero portati via tutti gli averi, rimossi i privilegi e mandati in esilio, lontani da Firenze, in seguito al tentativo senza successo di spodestare i Medici nel 1478. SANTA CROCE EASTER PROCESSION For a more low-key Easter experience why not visit the traditional procession of the Holy Cross that takes place in San Gimignano on April 3. An historic event held in the medieval hilltop town of San Gimignano this ancient celebration follows the traditional procession of the Holy Cross. The festivities are held in the squares and narrow streets and feature many groups in typical costumes and headgear. Head for the town around 7.30pm in time for a refreshing glass of local Vernaccia before the procession takes place at 9pm on the 3rd April.

Una processione che percorre le piazze e le vie strette della città, e che fa sfoggio di diversi gruppi in costumi e berretti tipici. Fai in modo di essere in città per le 19.30, in tempo per un bicchiere di Vernaccia locale prima della processione che ha inizio alle 21.00 del 3 aprile.
