Jared Orlin, Lucky Cats - The Streak - Through my travels and having lived for a period in Taipei, I’ve long been inspired by the ‘lucky cat’ or maneki-neko. It’s not an everyday object in Western culture but it is universally known (and not always understood). Depending on which arm is waving/beckoning, the lucky cat is said to either bring customers or money. For my design, I’ve removed the paws but added a ‘streak’ that synchs them up, making them as one. Or, separate but connected. The inspiration here is a comfort and safety in knowing things fit together and go on, perhaps indefinitely. the English Channel in small boats, one of the most dangerous shipping channels in the world. At least 8,400 people crossed in 2020, 10% of whom were children. Since 1999 three hundred asylum seekers have died including 36 children. Contextual cast objects rendered like bone, are arranged in an ironic mandala, representing the circle of life. The circle reflects the movement of wheels and journeys made, cogs functioning because of actions by others. White is the Colour of Mourning in many cultures.

The precarious Channel crossing attempts are symbolised by a sardonic life buoy and the reality of cast dinghies and symbolic paddles. Weapons represent the violence of war and persecution and adult and child lower limb bones (used to flee) reflect mortality and vulnerability. Children are represented by Teddy bears, often left where children have met a tragic end. Tiny trainers acknowledge the iconic photo in 2015 of Aylan Kurdi that made global headlines and a subsequent international response to the refugee crisis in Europe. Currently many of my Pieces are being completed on Cork shipped to the Studio in sheets from Portugal. I have fallen in love with Cork as the paint is absorbed and becomes much more of a permanent subject on the Natural Cork. My Studio has served as a teaching Studio helping High School Students complete their Art Portfolios in preparation for their applications to Art Colleges. This has been an honor; a true joy. TOGETHER FOR ETERNITY

My name is Wendy Alber, I am a Mauritian artist currently living in Germany. Some describe me as an expressionist, others say that my paintings are linked to symbolism and a few say that I am a figurative artist. I am however, still searching the true me through each brushstroke. My primarily medium is acrylic and I enjoy themes such as landscapes, seascapes as well as human figures, namely portrait and I can be very sensitive and produce abstract works on small canvas, mainly in pursue of self-expression when I feel overwhelmed. It is merely like putting a word on a feeling but using colours to do describe this and painting has proved to be indeed a great medium of expression. I paint with my feelings while listening to music and this

brings me to another level with my artwork. I have been an art teacher for 20 years now, both in Mauritius and Germany but my journey as an artist started in 2018, when I discovered the purpose of my art… a longing for my country, Mauritius. This thirst as well as the impact of Covid-19 and travelling restrictions, contributed greatly to my artistic development. “Together for eternity” relates to my Motherland, a sunset, low tides, romantic atmosphere, contrasting colours, and visible brushstrokes, evoking a couple walking together towards the horizon, through all odds and difficulties. My influence. One of my favourite artists is Vincent van Gogh and his expressive artworks and

amazing brushstrokes have at times indirectly influenced my art. My aim is not to stick with a particular technique or approach, instead evolving and developing deeper but still with passion and feelings.

This artwork is a true depiction of what I felt on this particular day and I was able to use and put colours instead of words on my feelings. During these past months, I have been painting my inner self, my new identity as an artist, as well as a reconnection with my faith in God along with the thirst to see my Motherland again. INNERSELF - NUMBER 1

I paint with my soul and feelings and when doing so, I am in a deep connection and intimacy with my artwork. It may happen that accidental effects, give birth to interesting artworks. “Anxiety” was born when I wanted to collect and spare paints which felt on the ground. I instead decided intuitively, to use them on a piece of carton and with a plastic fork.

NIGHTMARE

Sinclair Watkins was born in Nashville, Tennessee and grew up in Louisville, Kentucky but didn’t decide to pursue art as a career until her senior year in high school. She obtained a BFA in Studio Art with a Concentration in Drawing and Painting from the University of North Texas and an MA in Fine Art from the University of East London where she concentrated on printmaking and drawing. She was able to learn under 1991 Turner Prize winner Grenville Davey and show work in several galleries in the Docklands and Shoreditch. After moving back to the United States and making Houston, Texas her home for 5 year she worked in the tattoo industry for three years. She left the tattoo industry after a struggle with trauma and took some time away from making art for a year and a half. With help from friends and family she decided to slowly move back into the art industry but this time in

the digital landscape. She began painting digitally in 2018. She is currently back in school at Temple University Japan Campus in Tokyo,

Japan where she has been able to pursue other digital media such as animation, typography, and photography.

WELL

Sinclair has always been interested in how the human body and anatomy can be used in a semi abstract fashion to portray more conceptual ideas. Many of her early paintings used bone structure with surrealist influence to flesh out and cope with early trauma. A series of acrylic paintings in 2011 entitled “Panic Attack” used these elements to show a physical metaphor of the invisible effects of Panic Disorder. In her early career, she focused on abstracted charcoal portraits which culminated in a large scale project in 2014 in London in 2014 entitled DEITIES. These six large scale charcoal drawings stood at 8 feet tall and 4 feet wide and were displayed at the University of East London. Relief printing and then etching allowed her to play with the idea of destruction and deterioration as she made sets of prints where each print was dipped in acid to corrode the plate further until the drawing was no longer visible. Both of these projects were the first attempts at tackling the pervasive issue of addiction in her family. They dealt with the clear deterioration of her mother, both in body and in mind, and her subsequent death in 2012 because of alcoholism.

she decided to commit herself to this digital media and go back to school at Temple University in Tokyo, Japan, where she currently resides. Although the Covid-19 pandemic caused her setbacks with this decision, she has found fulfillment with digital photography in Tokyo. This medium has allowed her to take her experiences with drawing, painting, modeling, makeup arts, digital painting, printmaking, and tattooing and mix each of those skills into her most recent pursuit in self portraiture. The curated selection of self portraits, collectively entitled “for those who have walked through hell” are the culmination of all her artistic pursuits over the last 15 years. They tell her own experience battling with addiction; both the descent and the ascent. Each photo was taken, modeled, and edited by her.

Sinclair has always believed that art is a universal language. Her hope has always been to speak directly to those who have already walked through hell with her own experiences, struggle, strength,

forms, pursuing the well-trodden path of abstract repetition, and the magnifying repetition of imperfection, as a means of representing physical, social, and cultural evolution. An epiphany came at art school, when I was challenged to make the abstract more personal, to bring more of myself into the piece. In my case this meant revisiting these past experiences and standing up for those who are treated as less than human and have no voice.

METAMORPHOSIS

I was born in Canterbury, Kent, England, and an interest in social justice led me away from art into a career in medicine. Early in my training, whilst young and working in the developing world, I was exposed to the suffering of refugees from a genocidal regime These images stayed with me when life and family took me back to the UK. My own future seemed comfortable until sudden and serious illness catapulted me into retirement at the age of 40. No longer able to do the job I loved and facing an uncertain future, I turned back to art and to art school. I qualified in 2016 from the University of Creative Arts with a master’s in fine Art.

Much of my work revisits earlier medical experiences as a witness of human suffering. My work is not autobiographical in the figurative sense, but like many artists explores the liminal space between conscious representation and unconscious influence. The philosophical reasons for repetition of violence through history explored by Butler and Zizek have influenced me, together with artists Doris Salcedo, Ai Weiwei and Mona Hatoum who transcend their autobiographical experiences to comment on thematic human issues. Recently my work concerns humanitarian aspects of the COVID19 pandemic and the English Channel refugee crisis.

My work aims at challenging our perception of ourselves, our fragility and strength. My sculptures evolve by manipulating multiple cast objects so that the whole becomes greater than the sum of its parts. Using repetition as emphasis, the outcome has a decorative geometry and kinetic unity that expresses are shared human experiences and conditions.

My inspiration comes from these experiences as both observer and participant, as practitioner and patient, most recently as an immunocompromised artist living a shielded existence in relative social isolation. My interest in making is highly personal, building repetitively from the small to the large. Initially I repeated simple abstract objects and arranged them to create more complex

Using varied materials, I cast repeated contextually linked objects that when perceived are re-assembled to reveal a hidden narrative. I aim for the narrative within my art to be a platform to raise awareness of subjects that are often overlooked or ignored within society and to be a focus for discussion. My work is frequently decorative but hiding darker and often sinister subjects that when revealed create dissonance. The sum is like an optical puzzle, oscillating between beauty and nightmare.

Beached and Dream or Nightmare? which was published in the last addition of Artist Talk Magazine are examples of this decorative discord. Both are autobiographical works of myself, an immunocompromised medically retired doctor and artist during the COVID19 pandemic, reflecting the mixed identity as both observer and participant, medical practitioner and patient living in isolation. As I rebuilt myself piecemeal, so the sculpture evolved using repeated objects that relate to the pandemic arranged in a Covid form. Femurs referencing mortality are combined with driftwood - although different both are vestigial remains and look like bone. Driftwood symbolises feeling beached (stranded) and like the virus returns in waves. Surreal faces represent feeling depersonalised during isolation, the arms the inability to embrace, and bats the vector of Covid19 invade the sculpture. Bandages binding the work, are symbolic of Florence Nightingale and the Nightingale hospitals and reference my identity. The bandages in Beached are bloodied, (red also being the colour of danger) reflecting the harm the pandemic has caused, but later, in Dream or Nightmare? they are clean – giving hope for a post pandemic world.

My practice is very process orientated, I work from a small shed in my garden, making

moulds to cast objects over and over- a messy, yet methodical production line. Repetition as a means of artistic practice requires considerable patience and it is at times laborious and obsessive. My creative ideas occur at night away from the manufacturing process of daytime when I have no time to think or reflect as the process is all absorbing. Creativity starts only when all the objects are made. I often do not know what the outcome will be until I start arranging the objects and the sculpture slowly evolves, sometimes through a happy accident! It has taught me not to have pre- conceived ideas, to keep an open mind and to explore materials and to take risks. I am passionate about my work, and it is a privilege to explore and share my ideas with others.

EVOLUTION

COLOUR OF MOURNING

My favourite part of the creative process is the unpredictability of the outcome. Many sculptors rely on drawings with a vision of how their work will be. However, my sculptures only start to evolve when manipulating multiply cast objects. I see these studio experiments as my 3D drawings, and I find it exciting when the multiple pieces articulate together, maybe reflecting my medical past, to create labyrinthine sculptures. These were recently described as “an infinite geometry that doesn’t just unite kinetic forces, but human experiences and human conditions.” My most recent work is called The Colour of Mourning, which uses contextual cast objects to reflect the hazardous movement of refugees crossing the English Channel in escalating numbers to seek asylum in the UK after fleeing from war and persecution. It is not possible to apply for asylum outside the UK. In 2020

This work been accepted for the Focus Art fair, Fold Gallery London in 11th to 14th August, with a

private view at the Saatchi on 13th August and next year at Fresh Air Sculpture, Quenington, UK. I am also exhibiting pandemic works at the Oxo Tower Gallery, London in September. I am a member of IAVA, International Association of Visual Artists and Continuum. I have been published, most recently in Flux Review Magazine and Artist Talk Magazine. Ben Hendy, Self Portrait - Self Portrait is a concertina bound artist’s book consisting of hand-burnished linocut prints on 25gsm Mulberry paper. The imagery depicts sections of the human body on a magnified scale, closely examining the textures of skin and patterns created by hair. Small dots and dashes form most of the mark making, conveying a sense of subtle tonal variation. Each fold of the book is perforated, offering the viewer an opportunity to create their own larger image, or self-portrait, by pulling the book apart and rearranging the pages. Artist’s books offer a tactile experience which framed prints on a gallery wall cannot, providing the viewer an opportunity to pick up, look through, and interact with. Catarina Diaz, Reverie - I consider my art a way to celebrate life. Reverie depicts a retro fashion image superimposed with flowers and wild animals. The strategic placement of the flowers imitating the details of the dress enhance the visual aesthetic. The snow leopard on the lower right serves as a symbol of inner instincts and intuition, and the flamingo taking flight speaks to the balance, beauty, and grace of both the figure and composition. The work embodies the meaning of the title, daydreaming and losing yourself to one’s thoughts. The whites, light pinks, and darker purple hues enhance the dreamlike characteristics of the composition. Furthermore, the juxtaposition of soft and bright colours creates an idyllic scene. Benny Warsh, Outspoken - Outspoken is a reminder of those creative giants of the past whose visions broke through the status quo of their time. The inherent delicate nature of the violin and butterfly unite creating a familiar formation with an imprint of sheet music from the great composer Bela Bartok. Bartok refused to preform in Germany and fled Hungary during World War II. Dated newspaper articles featuring the achievements of Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso and Rene Magritte break through the clouds presenting organic colours above. The link between butterflies and growth can be cliché but when viewing this piece distance any contemplation away from the individual. Kaylyn Murphy, Black Swallowtail Butterflies - My paintings are made from my curiosity and sense of wonder in nature. Clarisse Bautista, View of 25 Years - This is a watercolor artwork showing a kitchen view of Rolla in Dubai, United Arab Emirates from the 5th floor. Baxi is a sketcher friend who had lived in Dubai and in the same apartment for 25 years and now has migrated to the United States. Nishtha Pathak, ROOTS - A lot has changed in COVID - and has hit these construction workers hard. Mark Burrell, ‘The Path Not Taken’ - April 2021 - Acrylic, enamel and fabric on canvas and board. 61cm x 61cm x 3cm. This piece was one of a series that explored the theme of mortality in these difficult times. The path seems clear however, the edges are blurred and it would be easy to stray from the path. - out of the light and into the dark. The fabric pieces are islands of solidity but show the background seeping through, they could be bandages. The red circle has connections to blood but that was not the primary intention. The circle is a symbol of ‘self’, and places me into the painting. It is also fluid and moving and adds a dynamism to the picture plane. Ella Jackson, Skinny Dip - Inspired everyday by the women around me, my works commemorate the close relationships of females and the idea of sisterhood. Through the restrictions in travel that came with the pandemic, seeing friends and family became limited, forcing us to communicate through a screen. The subjects in my works emit a sense of togetherness as well as nostalgia of the past but also hope for the future. Cid Roberts, Broadway Dark - The pandemic hit the theatre community worldwide particularly hard. During the earlier months of quarantine I would walk through the Theatre District here in New York, and it had such a somber and eerie feeling. All the Broadway theaters dark and quiet, so much stillness where there is usually none. I was struck by the glow of the lights on fire escapes, alleyways, occasionally a window to a costume workshop or dressing room with a light on revealing a scene frozen however it was the day they sent everyone home. Andrew Rowe, Isolation Corona Table To Make Time Pass - This was made at the start of the coronavirus lockdown. I found myself with protracted amounts of time to consider my surroundings and started to explore their potential to create artworks in various media that I ordinarily would not have considered. I was unable to venture outside and to pass the time I created physical collage pieces using items immediately to hand and the first item I used was an old pasting table. I used found objects, images, acrylic paint and varnish and chose them primarily for their aesthetic qualities and only started to appreciate their ideas and context when the piece was finished and I gave myself time to further contemplate the piece as a whole. Geraldine Leahy, Mutation - Currently, I am looking at the effects of coastal erosion in my locality. My approach involves using debris, such as plastic, in layered processes that reflect changes in the environment. Mutation began as a monoprint of plastic strands found on the beach. I explore the incongruity of this manmade material which can create quite beautiful images in monoprinted form, yet is deadly to marine life. In Mutation, the plastic, which originally created an attractive composition on the canvas board, has changed into something more sinister with the addition of layers of paint and gouache. Louise Hynes, Asleep - Asleep is a painting using acrylics on a recycled canvas. 45cms high x 65cms wide, framed. In the blue sky there are condensation trails from aircraft crisscrossing the sky, or are they chemtrails polluting our world ? We decide what we believe about this controversial subject. Jess de Zilva, One of those days - Jess de Zilva paints psychological allegories. Her work ‘One of those days’ is inspired by Valentine de Boulogne’s ‘Last Supper’ and was originally going to portray ‘the morning after’ the party. As the pandemic hit and work with models wasn’t possible, she took on the roles of all the protagonists herself. The result being the painting having turned inwards, asking how we handle being relentlessly faced with our own selves. Matthew Mark, Radiance in Manchester Square - I painted this piece of an actual real location in my city. It consists of being a new strip mall for new businesses in shopping and retail to emerge. Ever since the pandemic it has been a difficult time to open a new business or to keep one going. The economic fallout has been hit hard to many. I would hate to see this type of location become empty like a ghost town. The architecture of this building is very modern and European giving it a feel as though your actually over in England. Rachel Henriksen, Hidden in Plain Sight - The original concept for this installation formed as I was thinking about how my experiences and background shape the way I see and perceive everything around me, despite my best efforts to pretend that all my opinions are unbiased and judgements completely rational. Empathy is a common concept threaded throughout my work as I yearn to understand and empathize with different people and groups, and the first step is acknowledging the veil that is inevitably covering my eyes. Soo Kim, Pink River - Imagining a fairyland of botanical gardens with a pink river running through, this piece was created by blending pinks, oranges, and yellow alcohol inks with a blow pump. My Story: My father was a workaholic and growing up in this family, I was subconsciously trained to become one too. To support my family, I’ve studied graphic design and became an art director working for Revlon fragrances in the heart of NYC. However, I’ve always craved an outlet, to ‘let go’ of all my fears and anxiety. I stumbled across alcohol inks and it has healed me and my viewers since. Crisis after global crisis, digested into manageable stories with pretty faces. No wonder, my father is filled with a look of evening prayer, while my mother, wears an expression of dedicated consternation. Yes, in the throes of current events, W.B. Yeats poem A Second Coming echoes and reverberates with powerful meaning: “The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere / The ceremony of innocence is drowned; / The Best lack all conviction, while the worst are full of passionate intensity.” In spite of what comes, naturally, young or old, we want to stay informed... Alice Gur-Arie, Rebirth - This year Pantone selected two colours to reflect our extraordinary times. Ultimate Grey thematically references the isolation of lockdown, while yellow, Illuminating, represents hope. Inspired by the pandemic, Rebirth is a new work from the Portuguese landscape series, The King’s Lodging. The glowing yellow light communicates optimism for the future, while the distant, textured, grey sky symbolizes the darkness of loss, loneliness, isolation and grief. This artwork combines photography and painting. Treating my photograph as the canvas, I repainted the picture by hand digitally in layers to achieve washes, enlarging the image to paint pixel by pixel where detail required.
