Pete Rey is an inspirational piece of work from his latest collection ‘Atmosphere’, which is a dedication to the life’s work of his great grandfather, Gordon Miller Bourne Dobson CBE FRS. Gordon was an eminent scientist in his time, who studied the atmosphere, developing equipment to measure the density of ozone, ultimately leading to the discovery of the hole in the ozone layer for which he was awarded a CBE and an FRS from Merton College Oxford. To this day NASA and all scientific bodies still use his measurement ‘The Dobson Unit’ as a measurement of Ozone in the atmosphere. ‘Beyond’ was produced from an inspirational image piece acquired from NASA, captured from a satellite viewpoint of the earth’s atmosphere. The piece presents the wondrous layers of a dawn sky ascending into the depths of space and a presentation of its majestic beauty.

The impact of humanity on the global environment is at the forefront of global discussions today across all forms of media. The challenge today, a consensus to address climate change and how we each as individuals can make a difference on a micro scale, grows with ever increasing conspiracy theories and a magnitude of distrust in science. Never have we faced such a monumental threat to the future of our world, yet with so many in disbelief. In the 1980s we discovered the hole in the ozone layer and a broad activation unified across the world banned CFCs through aerosol use, which was one of the most successful environmental campaigns ever completed, leading to a return of our protective ozone layer. Yet today we see wildfires across the world, rising sea levels and ever increasing extreme weather caused by mankind’s turbulent effect on the world, but action to address this is slow and still lacking commitment in so many areas of daily life. Drawing attention to these environmental causes, Pete Rey’s latest collection is an artistic exploration of the many spheres between the earth’s surface and

the void of space, with the hope of bringing focus to our past success in a unified action to address the depletion of the ozone layer with a call to action for climate change to unite once again and make a difference on a global scale, starting with day to day localised action. Rey’s body of work transmits a mixture of serene and powerful movements, combined with a stunning iridescence of colours found across the expanse above us. It is Rey’s third art collection, following his first ‘Dimensions’ and second ‘Paradiso’. Movement is a key component of Rey’s work, giving tremendous energy and a beautiful flow through each artwork, enhancing the emotional connection with the viewer. For his creations, Rey takes original inspirational source images and transforms them into unique pieces of contemporary art through various digital painting techniques. It is a process he has termed ‘Phototranscendence’, which creates strokes much like those of a painters’ brush, whilst preserving the original colour palette. Dobson’s work on the atmosphere was instrumental in the discovery of the hole in the Ozone layer and propelled a much greater understanding of the entity as a whole, for which he was honoured with a CBE from the Queen and a Fellowship from Merton College, Oxford. To this day NASA still use his measurement of ozone density in the atmosphere, The Dobson Unit. His portrait which is held at the National Portrait Gallery, was taken by the same photographer, Walter Stoneman, who was also commissioned by Queen Victoria and Winston Churchill which emphasised his eminence in his day. It is no surprise that Pete Rey, Gordon’s great grandson who shares his middle name Gordon, is passionate about the environmental challenges ahead of us. Rey’s creative journey began at a young age, initially signed to BritArt at the age of 21, selling abstract fine art photography prints. BritArt were famous for creating an iconic movement of contemporary art in the 1990s, representing some of todays most established artists and attracted the interest of industry leading figures, including Charles Saatchi. Rey then applied his creative talents to create an international production company, completing worldwide commissions, from which a love of travel and the world’s natural beauty in photography was born. Returning to the art scene with a wealth of production skills and digital imaging expertise, Rey brings with him a fresh look of abstract artistry to the fine art world. Inspired by meditational practice where one can often see auras and movements of light, Rey takes inspirational original source images and transforms these into entirely new works through digital painting techniques, producing breathtaking pieces of large format art. his work, Rey takes us on a journey, to blur the lines between known dimensions, creating unique artworks to represent the transcendence of energy flows into what is termed the ‘Quantum’ and beyond. Working as a digital artist but delivering his work as vast immersive prints, Rey breaks down the traditional separation between the digital and physical artist, using an array of digital processes to enhance his creative expression but ultimately produces works in awe inspiring, huge physical forms. Rey has always been fascinated by the science behind the known world, studying Human Sciences at University College London in his early twenties and also enjoying a talented grasp of technology. Applying his love of science, technology and creativity to the artistic process, he has developed a unique expression of art from a photographic starting point. It is perhaps no accident that his great grandfather’s most famous work and discoveries were founded upon the application of unique photographic processes. Rey’s great grandfather Gordon Miller Bourne Dobson was an experimentalist of unusual ingenuity who devoted much of his life to the observation and study of atmospheric ozone. The results were to be of great importance in leading to an in depth understanding of the structure and circulation of the stratosphere,

with the apparatus he created being instrumental in the discovery of the hole in the ozone layer.

UNUSUAL ARCTIC OZONE HOLE

Dobson was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) in 1927, awarded their Rumford Medal in 1932 and delivered their Bakerian lecture in 1945. He won the Chree medal and prize in 1949. He served as president of the Royal Meteorological Society from 1947 to 1949 and was awarded their prestigious Symons Gold Medal for 1938. He was made a CBE in 1951. Dobson inferred correctly that the cause of the warm stratosphere was heating by the absorption of ultraviolet solar radiation by ozone, and he set out to make measurements of the amounts and their variability. He decided to measure ozone by observing its absorption in the solar ultraviolet spectrum using photographic recordings. Invented in the 1920’s, Dobson’s ‘spectrophotometers’ continued to be developed until the 1950s. The apparatus essentially worked by comparing the intensities of a pair of ultraviolet wavelengths. One wavelength is partially absorbed by

ozone and the other is unaffected. The ratio between them gives a measure of the amount of ozone in the atmosphere along the light’s path.

slower, more considered approach, focusing primarily on sculpture. While I am waiting for the figurative elements to be cast by the foundry (I work with Lunts Foundry in the West Midlands), I work on the other elements, the assemblage process, using other metals (usually copper) and wood. My work is made up of various processes – it takes time. We live in a small wood on the side of a hill. I try to use dead wood we have felled in my work, plus I like to repurpose objects wherever possible. ‘Sleeping Muse’ is my take on Brancusi’s series of sculptures with the same title, where I have repurposed a marble lamp as a plinth. There always has to be a copper element too (my favourite metal) and I am constantly experimenting with patination recipes.

Originally I am from Buckinghamshire, I studied at Amersham College of Art & Design and Leeds Polytechnic, graduating in 1988 with a B.A. (Hons) in Fine Art. In 1996, I moved to London where I managed a variety of design projects before concentrating on my art full time. Since 2007, I have exhibited extensively across the UK and as far afield as Finland and Austria. I now live and work from my studio in Llandysul, West Wales.

I would describe my work as assemblage sculpture, there always has to be a sculpted element, usually a figure or a portrait using high-density plaster or wax and then cast in bronze. I like to combine abstraction with figurative elements. I am not interested with making perfect representations of the human figure or face in sculptural form. Other sculptors do this much better. I explore and celebrate the flaws in nature and the imperfections that give materials true beauty. I am fascinated with the natural patination process in metals and wood.

‘Cocker’ is a repurposed copper ball cock, where I have cut it in half and beaten a face out of one half, reconnecting it with three copper rivets to its untouched other half, a scull and hat in one, with no welding or soldering. The ‘Cocker’ reference being slang for old mate. The title naturally seemed to chime with the piece. In 2019 I reclaimed the term ‘Artivism’ as my work is very often concerned in raising awareness about social, political and environmental issues. I am an ambassador for causes I feel strongly about and strive to increase people’s awareness and perceptions through my art. In 2019 I donated a painting titled ‘Uprooted’ to a charity art auction in Manchester ‘Bid and Rebuild’. The auction, to raise money for two charities in support of refugees rebuilding their lives in the UK. ‘Uprooted’ started life as a Hexaptych in 2017, an artwork consisting of six panels, until I decided to separate the panels and frame them individually. It is important to me that my work can resonate with such causes and is an example of how you can take a simple idea about the root system of an oak tree and have a conversation about what roots mean to people and their lives. If I had to collaborate with another artist it would be Mark Burrell, hands down! We studied at Leeds together and we regularly put on art performances and sculpture installations. I have always held a high regard for Mark’s work, which demands a closer inspection. His abstract 2D works are poetic and made with great integrity; they very often have a story to tell and are always thought provoking. That is the point of art, right? I have a strong belief that you need courage as an artist to break away from the mould. There always needs to be an element of fear in making work. Mark is a great example of this and it was something instilled in us by one of our Lecturers at Leeds, Sculptor, George Hainsworth. The favourite piece that I have made is ‘Internal Compass’. I started sculpting the plaster figure in the middle of the first lockdown and only completed it recently (my

sculptures are slow burners). I feel it has been on a journey with me. In essence, it is a self-portrait and about self- reflection, something many of us are doing right now. It is also about a sense of place and a feeling of being grounded, when you acknowledge and understand what your core values are. In times when you are lost, when you remind yourself of these values it can often help you through a difficult situation or crisis, whereby you find your strength again through your ‘internal compass’. When it comes to sculpture and painting my favourite is definitely ‘sculpture’ it is grounding and never lies.

INTERNAL COMPASS

My work is inspired by a broad spectrum of artists. Constantin Brâncuși, a pioneer of Modernism, is the main influence in my sculptural work and my love of the ‘Modernist’ aesthetic, extends into architecture. I also find inspiration from painters such as American Abstract Expressionist, Hans Hofmann, who held a strong conviction about the spiritual and social value of art. This is a conviction I also share and use to galvanise the themes I am working on. Another more contemporary influence on my work is Julian Schnabel the American painter and filmmaker, who frequently experiments with new materials and painting techniques and embraces various modes simultaneously to avoid being limited by a signature style. I aspire to the same drivers, which resonate with my own practice. With regards to social media, I only use Instagram. As an artist, in addition to a good website, it is important to have a platform to market and share your work to a wider public. It is a lifeline for making connections with other artists and a nice way to visually share your processes. I am not however, someone who has to constantly create posts, only when there is something worth sharing. I am not motivated by lots of likes and follows, but I am very grateful for a stalwart of steady supporters.

My favourite exhibition is my portrait drawing of tattooist and friend Yan Spencer, which was exhibited at the Royal Academy of Art’s summer exhibition in 2013 and was the springboard for a two-year portrait-drawing project, originally inspired by David Hockney’s large-format drawings of Family, Friends and Best Friends, at Salts Mill where I visited in 1994. The project, drawings of my own friends and family who would come and sit for me for 3-4 hours each week, resulting in an exhibition of portrait drawings titled ‘Sitting Still for Cathy’ at Lauderdale House, London, September 2014. The portrait drawings from this exhibition are featured on my website. The meaning of my work is that of a ‘Sense of place’ and ‘Belonging’ which are recurring themes in my work and I am continually empowered to investigate, how we fit into this new landscape we all find ourselves in. Our connection with nature and the world around us resonates now more than ever and it is this connection that is reflected in the natural

materials I work with. It is all about the process for me, that is the magical bit. As soon as the work is complete I can’t wait to get started on the next component of the new sculpture, whatever that is. You are only as good as your next piece of work. My hopes for the future? On asking how I deal with criticism when it comes to my work, whether you ‘like’ an artist’s work or not is so subjective. I used to try and second guess the market, but as such, you stop making the work you need to make and inevitably, you lose something. You will end up not making your best work. I don’t worry if someone does not like my work, or if they criticise it because that is not the reason why I make the work. I make the work I am driven to make, if that makes sense? BELONGING

My name is Nico (Wolfgang) Hensel born 1977 in southern Germany, I am married with two sons. My father was a Doctor and my mother a housewife.

I have been self employed as a designer, developer, photographer, philosopher, interior designer and artist since 2004. I have been featured in various publications on typography in national media’s such as PAGE (magazine for digital design and media production), Novum (World of Graphic Design) and book publications such as “Webdesign Index” or “Fraktur mon Amour”, Verlag Hermann Schmidt, Mainz, just to mention a few. For someone seeing my work for the first time, I try to transform my knowledge of multiple communications using the golden ratio, through colour etc. that I have learned from my design studies and turn into a unique visual aesthetic of my views on art. I try to create or photograph compositions and images that represent new stylistic devices.

When it comes to having a favourite piece of art work that I have produced, to be frank, I do not have one, I think it’s because I have more interests but they out weigh the time I have to produce art work. I am definitely a visual junkie always looking for new artistic stimulation in views, patterns, materials and processes. I can see something, change it, add something or create something new. I constantly hunt and scan my surroundings and I am addicted to change, along with also constantly trying to change my ideas. Currently I am trying to shoot water acrylic mixes with my kids plastic water guns. As a graphic designer and photographer with an aboveaverage sensitivity for everything I see, my brain is in scan mode 24 hours a day.

So the current state always influences me. Certainly I constantly see something different in the mountains than in the big city, but I am always influenced by my surroundings, people, conversations ... and specifically the innate urge to create something new along with finding new visuals to express.

When it comes to creating my artwork, I do not have a direct procedure. I travel a lot, may be see something which I then transform, for example I may take garbage with me to construction sites, then might compose pictures from it ... I have my drone and a camera with me constantly, so allowing me to collect images/data to transform into art. I do not have a routine ‘art form’ that becomes a template for my work, instead I use the moment which allows everything to flow and become unique.

When being asked the question if I could collaborate with another artist, who would I choose and why? It is an interesting one, as I have never thought about this but now having been asked and stimulated into an answer it would be Sagmeister Walsh (New York) because they break visual rules. On similar lines my favourite artists would have to be Neo Rauch, Ted Wongt, Sagmeister Walsh, Robert Götzfried, Erwin Olaf, Peter Foesters and Marcel Rozek. The impact of social media on myself as an artist, is a good tool for everything I need to allow my work to get out there and provide stimulus for my personal self. I have however, only been doing “art” publicly for about half a year, so I feel it will be a ‘time will tell’ as to the depth of positivity for both my work and development. When it comes to my dealing with criticism about my work, I can not fully answer this at the current time, as so far, I have not

had anything negative. I will say though if you don’t like it look elsewhere, as I do and will continue to do, what I like with my art work, it’s my interpretation of the world through my eyes, along with being an expression of my soul. It’s not political. If I want to express a political opinion, I would take to the streets. I like pure aesthetics. Once I have completed a piece of art work, my feelings and thoughts

Ingrid barber, “Who broke them plastic plates?”Hopper boppers and choppers, tales of mild provincial insanity - Covid left me feeling dark and desperate. I tried to return to a happy period of my life, childhood, to escape this incessant gloom. Inspired by German expressionism, my work explores the pure emotions of fear, gratitude, guilt and joy. One day Fay’s brand new plastic tea set was left out on the pavement after she went to bed . Her dad found it the next day smashed to smithereens. António André, In Heaven - My work is soul-inspired, and each piece celebrates artistic expression and life in itself, with all its power and intensity. ‘In Heaven’ has its roots in expressionism, and the dripping of colour, its characteristic element, brings the work back to the informal style typical of Raimondo Sirotti. Indy Chonk, The Butterfly Effect - I call this interesting piece “The butterfly effect” in this artwork there are two separate events taking place, although interestingly they are both in fact connected. If you look in the center, you will see a representation of distorted time using Dali’s famous timepiece. Because it is in time which brings these two events together. In one, we are sleeping and in a dream-like state; the opposite one is consciously awake, and walking into a path/direction. But, know this- they will be connected eventually through time. I wanted to evoke a sense of magic and connection because for me I feel in this life certain pieces of the puzzle always make sense in the end. Amelie Monira Egenolf, Magic City - The Artist Amelie Monira Egenolf (Monira Art) is from Germany and traveled all her life around the Globus and lived in South america and Asia. Janice Ruth Gracias, Bloom - “Bloom” is inspired by “a sea of lotus flowers”. This flower blooms in the most unlikely of places – surrounded by gluggy mud in murky river waters. Not only does it find sanctuary in the muck, but due to the waxy protection layer on its petals, its beauty is blithely unaffected when it re-blooms each morning. It continues to resurrect itself, coming back just as beautiful as it was last seen. With such refusal to accept defeat, it’s almost impossible not to associate this flower with unwavering faith. Although cultures have largely dubbed the lotus as a spiritual figurehead, it is most emblematic of the faith within ourselves. Sue Trusler, Dandelion Dream - I chose this painting to showcase, as it always makes me feel happy. My first venture into painting was restoring our narrow boat, with canal art roses. I then became interested in Botanical art, which really suited my attention to detail. Looking at other artists I longed to try being more expressive. Finally, I decided to just go for it and created something way out of my comfort zone. I was so pleased with my loose dandelion I decided to have the design made into cushions for my holiday home. Nora O Murchu, Every goddess deserves a temple - To hope and to home. This majestic temple, finished in 1783, is perilously perched, in splendid isolation, atop a dramatic basalt cliff. The North Atlantic swell crashes against its base and there are views of the Irish coastline for days. I based this linoprint on an original photograph taken on an outing to clear my head during lockdown. Fresh air, moss on the old walls like old velvet. I enjoyed the flow state of carving the old sea-weathered stone. It is inked in an earthy dark moss green to emphasise how nature and architecture meld together on location, as intended by those who constructed her all those centuries ago. Silvia Felizia, Equilibrium - My paintings are journeys that tell my story and the story of my surroundings, crisscrossing my present with my past, in a continuous search for reconciliation between my Latinx origins and the pull I feel towards the places I have lived. “Equilibrium” was created in November 2013 at the beginning of the Ukrainian Revolution when the police attacked peaceful anti-government protesters, most of them young women and university students. Lee Joon-young, An unexpected flood of emotions - We have had so many relationships that we can stimulate invisible emotions in our lives. I met a weak person in my heart through a lot of distrust and gossip. And the lack of darkness and language made the situation worse. Vian Borchert, Distant Lavender Fields - In the Summer of 2021, I created a series of Lavender Fields’ Paintings. Kristin Ducharme, Please Me - I created ‘Please Me’ in the summer of 2021 as a response piece. At the beginning of the quarantine, many of us looked toward one another on best practices; often our decisions erring on the side of those in our own familiar circle of friends and family. As the quarantine’s months unexpectedly passed the one year mark, visible signs of dissension and polarization among communities emerged. The cacophony escalated from a focus on others to a focus on self. ‘What pleases you doesn’t hurt others’ evolved into ‘Do it just to please me’.
