Lee Musgrave, It Is Not Always Obvious To Me Just What It Is I’m Trying To Accomplish - Acrylic on Box Canvas, 2022, Unframed, 100cm x 100cm (40” x 40”) This larger format piece is simply a call to contemplation amidst a complicated, busy and sometimes oppressive world. As our lives accelerate and our attention is grabbed from every angle, the space to stop, think and genuinely consider things has become an urgent requirement for us. My hope is that the work will give onlookers the opportunity to slow themselves, to simply think and to remember the importance of s p a c e.

Milne Publishing is proud to present Artist Talk Magazine issue 22. This issue is dedicated to celebrating all aspects of art.

Everyone featured within this issue have given interesting, in-depth, honest accounts about themselves, their work, views and ideas. In addition to the amazing images of the work they have produced, which I know you the reader will enjoy and be inspired by.

Thank you to everyone who entered our open call.

The cover of this issue is by Cecile Lobert, titled Cease-Fire.

“Picking up on the tumultuous energy of friction and dissension during recent times of contemporary global conflict and compelled to express this internalization outwards, Cecile created Cease Fire, a poignantly graphic painting that can be seen as a metaphor to the spoils of war.

Dedicated to the perpetual potential of discord within humanity, and the universal

impetus toward violence to resolve strife, we may see the work’s dominating red as an all-consuming metaphorical bloodshed. The brown dirt-like mass evokes the claustrophobic muck and grime of conflict and shots of steely gray conjure machinery or weaponry. At the top of the composition, a final flourish can be found, a vibrant and glossy candy apple swoosh, reminiscent of the Nike symbol: an improvisational wink, as if the goddess of victory herself had dropped one of her wings to ignite remembrance of communal hope. What ultimately remains is a portrait of processing inner turmoil toward a message beckoning peace.

The paintbrushes used to construct the piece are thrown down as a final act and permanently adhered, as if stuck or wounded amongst the chaos of combat.

This is the first time the artist left her tools of creation on the canvas, embedded like exclamation points to further drive home a highly emotional outpouring; a technique that would continue to emerge in her later oeuvres”.

CECILE LOBERT - CEASE-FIRE

CECILE LOBERT

Artwork by this artist ranges between £2,100 - £2,400. Please contact the artist directly, or Artist Talk for more information.

Lobert’s earliest works were informed by the appearance of three genderless silhouettes, which would ultimately disappear behind layers of color and paint, their mysterious presence a mere whisper. In this work, unusually, we find just one solitary figure that is only halfway obscured by

a combustion of kaleidoscopic hues, drips, and spurts. It’s as if the artist’s reliance on figuration to inform a painterly confidence is becoming no longer necessary in her maturing voice. Bravely letting a familiar totem dissipate into the past, she is experimenting anew.

Sienna colored peaks and canyons rise tumultuously from an earthen base mirroring the creation of the world’s topography in momentous heaves and falls. A rocky landscape that builds beneath a clear blue sky while a luscious patch of shimmering red commands as cornerstone hearkening to its molten core below. Rivulets like blood seep up into the stone. The Greek Goddess of Earth can be felt hovering over the scene, beckoning reflection on the creative act itself and its ever-present relationship to our physical environment.

THE SINGLE SILHOUETTE FROM PROJECT BARE CONSCIOUSNESS GAIA FROM PROJECT BARE CONSCIOUSNESS TRINITY FROM PROJECT BARE CONSCIOUSNESS

In this unusual depiction to three colors, divided into equal pyramid forms composed on the canvas to fit perfectly inside its square, an ode to trinity occurs. Perhaps an abstract conjuring of the father, son, and holy spirit that peppered Lobert’s theologian father’s beliefs; or a visual metaphor for the word’s combination of three to make one; or simply a study of balancing a triad of disparate parts, alike in form yet differing in hue. What emerges is a striking geography of strokes in a meditation on triangulation.

Painted while she was still wet and nude, covered in bubbles after emerging from a hot bath, Lobert descended one floor in her home to her studio, and grabbed a canvas to create this magnificent reaction to her present moment—a prime example of her unique expressionism born from a pure place without premeditated thought. The high temperature water illustrated in torrid orange and passionate red, in a rectangle reminiscent of a tub with the loose form of an elongated figure amidst its swirls and slashes. A frantic

central set of thin slashes breaks the plane as if in the act of escape from the liquid depths.

Composed while Lobert chanted “rouge, rouge,” this composition marks the first monochromatic work by the artist. A myriad techniques and gestural brushstrokes are articulated to explore multiple interpretations of the singular red. What results is a frenzied pitch bringing many passionate evocations to mind from fresh flush to deep blush to torrid fever to tempestuous mood in shades revealed across the light and dark gradient. This direct dialogue with color mingled with the normally non-verbal artist’s verbalization of its name may lend insight toward the experience of emotion as color.

Lobert’s use of the sublime is exemplified in this painting where we find a background of black and midground of red battling for definition amidst a foreground of lush and opaque stark white. Luminescent strokes placed atop color forge a certain neutrality as the artist negotiates feelings by covering them with something familiar, an equalizing tone that is both erasure and renewal. Uniquely layered to create a

three-dimensional feel, the color becomes both refreshment and reminder of the blank slate that came before, a continual rebirth through hue.

melee of movement, almost as if the painted gashes are competing one on top of each other for stance as queen of the hill. Insight into the present-minded emotions of neurodiversity unfold, one color defining its precedence over

another, in real time this enacts an age-old story of one upmanship, albeit without prior motivation. A climb without intention, just the impetus to move upward. Forward.

Two months into lockdown, Lobert created this climactic work amongst an intensifying personal angst, frequent tantrums, and burgeoning bouts with anger. The piece was originally painted in various colors and left ignored, until one night, in secret, the artist rose from bed to cover it in black, before adding an aggression in red like wisps of a hand, or a cry for help from the murky depths of the unconscious. As one of the largest paintings in her oeuvre, it demands recognition of an existential crisis while dramatically representing creativity’s cathartic force.

Strokes of cherry red vault over arcs of blue and fuchsia in this ode to forward momentum. A background of neutral white, Lobert’s signature application, lays groundwork for a juxtaposition; a

A remarkable visual difference comes into play through this piece’s unusual composition and the placement of strokes. A sense of elation and elevation is seen in the solo green figure tinged with yellow, almost as if the artist has conquered her journey through isolation and is now floating above the chaos, inspired to situate herself and her journey inside of a black and purple square frame. The surge of central red, both pale and dark, becomes ever more magnetizing by the many spots of raw canvas that further emphasize a return of the light.

A blustery sea of green and dusty blue reminiscent of land and water tipped with throes of violet become an existential background

for a lavish composition of impasto orange. Dots in the mix appoint a structural ideation as if a floating barge across a moving feast – a boat atop a stormy vastness. What hot emotion sparked this build upon build with an artist focused on reacting to her every present moment? What is the orange and what is it wafting upon, set awash on a background full of painterly surprise? A skeleton brought its surface.

A pastel peach background sets a sumptuous stage for this extremely rare composition for Lobert. Instead of the artist’s typical system of working around the painting while walking around a table, she seems focused on the bottom half of the canvas,

filling it up with a mountain of tremendously layered nuance in stroke, color, and shape as if building a monument to neon to erase the darker foundation below. A swirl of acid mustard circles forms a final stamp of completion akin to a cherry atop a sundae and the work is abandoned, leaving behind a remarkable and scintillating piece.

Cécile Lobert is a neurodiverse, non-verbal visual contemporary painter who addresses consciousness in its raw form. Born and based in Belgium, the artist rapidly grew in popularity a year into entering the art market. With over 60k followers on Instagram @iamcecilelobert, six shows and a billboard on Times Square NYC in collaboration with ArtistTalk Magazine, Lobert’s paintings and in-studio process have attracted art lovers but also those new to art

from around the world.

The Belgian painter is perhaps bestknown for her emancipation from normative outlooks and references, offering deeply felt compositions from a rarefied place. Where artists work at tearing down social preconceptions, Lobert knows nothing other than this existential space so sought-after and dissects reality as we see it, to offer a version of consciousness free from set norms, perceptions and prejudices. Perhaps most renown for her Bare Consciousness series,  she provides unique snapshots of a non-verbal neurodiverse abstract expressionist’s reactions to every day, existential experiences.

Paintings document the silent and persistent dialogue between Lobert’s internal soul and the external stimuli of physical and emotional environments resulting in a raw and unfiltered glimpse at consciousness laid completely bare.

An outsider to societal imprints and to the ability to devise, strategize, or premeditate, her art arrives from a pure and unadulterated space of the absolute present, offering a window into a human consciousness physiologically free from what is considered normative. Challenging us to empathize with our own “bare consciousness” or inherent “true self,” untouched by individual history, social, or cultural upbringing, Lobert highlights who we may truly be without the conditioning we continuously undergo.

Her process made of raw outbursts of expression is impromptu; unstudied. When observing this process, it becomes apparent that painting is Lobert’s only means of expression and not just a medium amongst others. After experimenting with several mediums, the artist persisted with acrylic on Flemish linen canvas. Canvases are stained, perforated, poured on and finger-

painted. Self-taught, Lobert’s unique artistic methods continue to intrigue. For instance, after repeatedly painting-over three genderless silhouettes in all early compositions, The One Red Silhouette marks the last painting in which Lobert featured a silhouette. Native to the Bare Consciousness project, The One Red Silhouette is the only composition boasting one silhouette as opposed to three, and the only painting in which a silhouette is left partially uncovered. We can only speculate on the meaning these silhouettes and their coverup carry, along with other components constituting Lobert’s artistic method.

Paintings are named after words vocalized by Lobert during her artistic process and are otherwise named after incidents preceding compositions—like “Rouge Rouge” (“Red Red”), composed whilst she verbalised “rouge, rouge”, or Hot Bath, composed nude, moments after taking a hot bath; still soaking. Lobert’s compositions may be read like a diary, with works stemming from volatile emotions that well up within her mind and space. The fast-paced nature of her workprocess emphasizes the pure and spontaneous intent of every mark. At times, these works demand our interpretation and at others, lay everything bare. Her abstract expressionism embodies the qualities that characterize the most exceptional art—purity of vision, immediacy, passion, and more. The artist’s extraordinary condition in tandem with her consistently vital, prolific output makes her work truly unique, in a category of its own—sui generis—as much of a phenomenon as it is art.

Lobert’s other projects such as The Quarantine project—her emotional diary of the 2020 Covid 19 lockdown —is a cri de coeur rendered in heavily layered acrylics on canvas. It is rife with dark slashes and feverish swaths of bold

colors. This is painting as catharsis— intuitive, spontaneous, and utterly genuine. When her inner world clashes too strongly with the one imposed onto her, deep anxiety and tantrums give rise to occasional perforated canvases and abruptly interrupted pieces, later revisited. External triggers and events spark boundless emotional overflow, resulting in emotional spillover into paint.

Her most recent project, Neon Episode, represents a fresh and modern take on Abstract Expressionism, evolving a historic genre and verging into a contemporary realm of abstract Pop. In her signature impromptu and non-strategized fashion, Lobert expresses a sudden enigmatic love affair with neon hues. A departure from her traditionally used colors, this quick tryst resulted in paintings peppered with pinks, limes, acid oranges, and violets, amongst other ebullient shades bending toward the sunny and sprightly-tinged feelings of happiness, joy, and the ambiance of eternal springtime. A departure from darkness toward light emerges true to form. Each piece can be viewed in its original state, or, transformed into an electrically thrilling work when seen beneath a UV light.

Additionally, a stroll through the chronological creation of the Neon Episode paintings reveals a unique glimpse into the artist’s process of experimentation from an initial introduction and implementation of new color to a full circle exploration of said colors as they eventually become enveloped and embraced by Lobert’s traditional palette and methodology. It feels like she can only hope that in seeing these works, you may come to understand her world just a little bit better.

NATACHA BOILLOT

Artwork by this artist ranges between £500 - £1,500. Please contact the artist directly, or Artist Talk for more information.

Natacha Boillot (b. 1995, France) received a B.F.A. in painting with a minor in photography from the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in 2021. Boillot makes portrait paintings in oil based on photographs and memory.

McDonald’s Lady is about what I find paradoxical in adults and in society.

My work often deals with memories and our sense of identity. I believe an image can make us see in an instant the contradictions occurring in our daily life when we could have lived all our lives without realizing them.

I never forget the existing child

within the adult self: how our most acute memories shape our identity and conceptualization of the world forever.

This piece is about the cohesive narrative we crave in the adult existence and how it falls apart if we hold onto it too tightly.

The pink background is coming through the cracks of her oxide green fabricated world. The lurid red of her lips with the yellow of her hair represents the flashy duo of McDonald’s logo: the disgusting feel yet magnetic pull of the familiar. She tries to speak but can’t, stuck in her own prison.

I love using hands, or more

specifically, distorted hands in my work. I am fascinated by how beautiful and repellant they can be. Hands are the first thing we feel on our bodies from the outside world. Here the roles are inverted, she has become an adult, a successful corporate executive, an old lady. Yet her hands are desperately trying to communicate something to us, in vain. They are not powerful. All we are left with is the anguish and desperation of her pale-looking hands. But is there hope in her gaze and the blue of her corporate jacket? Where the flat, faded yellow marks fade into the pink background to make us uncomfortable, the sharpness of the blue arises.”

There is tension between how we remember something and how it was. Photographs she has taken act as triggers for her paintings. She remembers what was felt then and realizes the contradictions at play, what feels off. Her paintings explore how our own feelings become intertwined with the memories of other people and the idea we have of their experiences.

On the canvas, everything can be existing at once, the past and the future, the unreal and the real.

With a bit of luck, this gives us insight into what we feel, who we are and whether the idea or the experience feels more real.

Her art is a testament, a proof of what she feels or felt. It is a way to be sure of herself. A lot of documentation and preparation need to happen before a painting. Once she feels ready, she starts and works very fast. She loves to rush so she doesn’t have time to second-guess while making, so that

she doesn’t ruin the art. She starts with an abstract background as a representation of the environment of the person or of her own situation, before putting the figure in. Many of her figures are see-through because the way we perceive things is deeply rooted in our surroundings.

She lives and works in Hong Kong.

JOSS LIAO

It’s my pleasure to share with you all my project “A Place to Land / 栖⾝之地”. Inspired by Simone Weil’s writings on rootedness, the title of my project means a search for home and safety within one’s own body. I begun this project aiming to investigate trauma through the lens of personal memories. Using glass as a sculptural material, I drew parallel between the qualities of glass and the metaphoric body to represent visceral experiences of violence,

intimacy and penetration. In December 2020, I put up a solo exhibition in Metcalf Building, Providence, RI for this series of works. Some pieces were exhibited in Latitude Gallery NY afterwards.

As a glass artist, I’ve been fascinated with the material qualities of glass. When glass is hot, it’s soft like honey and elastic like bubblegum. It flows, bends, stretches and grows. Fluid and resilient, hot glass stands repetitive

heating and working, making the magical craft of glassblowing possible. As a bilingual kid growing up in multiple regions and cultures, I’ve experienced several uprooting events and traumatic experiences that deeply shattered me. I grew to survive, heal, and cherish resilience as a vital life source. And this is the message I’m sending through “A Place to Land”, that no matter how brittle, vulnerable, and desperate you might feel at the moment, there will be a way for life, there will be a path to heal, and there will be a world of love.

In this project, my research focus was on the consequences of annihilation and the core experience of PTSD (post-trauma stress disorder)—distortion of time resulting from compulsive revisiting and reliving of a past traumatic event. It’s as if time froze at that moment. Such isolation leads to dissociation and results in a common experience in survivors: detachment from livelihood. My works from this project are a memoir of my healing journey: the loneliness, the depression, the pain, the struggles for healing and the hope. This project is the diary of a sexual assault survivor. These works are soft, tender, vulnerable yet provocatively honest. I cherish post-trauma survivorship and I want to make room for discussions on mental illness, trauma and healing in the public discourse.

HANG IN THERE
DRAWING
STRIKING A BALANCE BETWEEN LIFE AND DEATH

CLOCK

The Clock piece was inspired by the post-trauma distortion of time and memories I experienced. I made a clock plate with a technique called slumping and created bumps with copper nails piercing into the skin of glass. I installed a reversed clock mechanism into the glass plate and hand fabricated the clock hand with copper. This is a clock for passed time, memories, pain and loss. Every time the hand walks through the bump, it stops, yet for an unpredictable amount of time. Sometimes a few second, sometimes hours or days, just like how we cherish memories and experiences dear to our heart. As the copper hand scribes through the glass, it leaves a delicate circular mark of its past.

This non-linear clock that goes backwards represents our non-

linear experiences of time.

In Gentle, my darling, I wrote the characters with glass on copper foil and sewed the characters onto a doormat. The unusual placement of such a delicate material sparks surprise and also the joy of discovery of a nuanced yet strong message—gentle love. The line “Gentle, my darling” comes from my friend’s tattoo. This piece passes on the tender message quietly and softly.

I still remember the immense helplessness and loneliness was thrown in. I felt completely alone, that no one would understand what I was going through. I felt shame even before I could talk. It wasn’t until recent years that I learned the striking prevalence of sexual violence incidents as a societal illness. We need to talk about injustice and violence upon women’s bodies. We need to confront the societal damage and pain womanhood carries to discuss peace and healing. I hope my works will empower folks who have been in desperation. We all are survivors, and are being born new every single second. The end of the dark tunnel is friends and families, love and hope.

Glaieul Samadani is a multidisciplinary artist based in Los Angeles. Glaieul has a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree and has been working in the design industry for over 30 years, and recently accelerated her transition to painting full-time. In the past two years, her works have received critical acclaim, and have been showcased in various galleries. Glaieul’s dynamic language of abstraction conveys a visceral engagement with music and lyrical influence to evoke a vibration and energy. Her oil paintings create chromatic color fields with rich layers of texture that take on a sculptural quality and pull the viewer into vibrant compositions with contrast and depth. Her bold and gestural brushstrokes and use of palette knife are applied in layers. Over time this technique creates a unique physicality

and spontaneity, resonating with influences of Abstract Expressionism and Color Field painting while creating her own individual style. Glaieul has exhibited in southern California and her artworks have been sold to private art collectors in the United States.

I am driven by my desire to observe, analyze and interpret the world and capture it through vivid colors, lines, shapes, forms and textures. In search of inspiration for my work, I travel and fully immerse myself in new environments; experiencing cultures through music, fashion, architecture and the arts along with the people and the natural environment. I try to absorb and capture that energy and vibration with intention through my paintings. Painting with oil, I sculpt my work using a palette knife and

My work is constantly evolving and is influenced by Abstract Expressionism, Color Field Painting, Impressionism, and photography. All my work stems from an idea or detail with an organic approach that I bring to life through my paintings. I leave room for the imagination, imperfection, sensation, and emotion, to show that aesthetic beauty can emerge from a simple vision. At times chaotic, serene, mysterious or romantic, each of my works should be viewed independently. The moment my painting catches your eye, a new energy and journey has begun.

STUDIO

I have worked in the design industry for about 30 years, specializing in interior design for luxury homes throughtout California. I have always been interested in creating art since I was a young girl. Painting became my passion more in my high school and college years. Now, I have devoted myself to be a professional artist since 2015, and just last year launching my website, and social media account.

Recently, I have sold 13 paintings so far this year to private art collectors in southern California and Southampton, New York. Also, my artworks were in the 25th Annual Newport Harbor Showcase House, Home & Garden Tour in May 2022.

I would describe my work as abstract expressionism and abstract figurative with use of bold colors and textural brush and palette knife strokes that tell the story, creating a sculptural effect. To me each color has a specific and distinct sound that expresses that specific emotion, and each brush or palette knife stroke tells the story with the markings I create on the canvas. I truly LOVE using broad fields of color, using strong colors, bold contrasts and

creating textures that evoke a depth, value, and composition. I usually paint in oil paint on canvas, and I use different palette knives and brushes. However, I do like to change it up at times and use fabric, sand, picked up items, colored oil sticks, acrylic, spray paint, and other mediums for my mixed media paintings.

SUNRISE A MOMENT WITH YOU

My creative process is both planned and spontaneous. It’s a labor of love. A dedicated and inspired heart and the “grit” make it happen. I usually paint without expectations or preconceptions, letting myself be carried away by the markings I make with lines,

shapes and color intuitively. Even when I have something in mind, I never know what the result will be as the painting evolves. The paintings I create are very much a part of me, my viewpoints my opinions and my emotions are all part of my creative process. You will see my perspective even though my art is abstract. It is my life and soul on the canvas.

I love many artists that have influenced me, from classical to modern. My favorites and the ones that stand out for me and have really inspired me and influenced my artwork are Van Gogh, Matisse, Monet, Modigliani, Degas, Cezanne, Kandinsky, Mondrian, Picasso, Turner, Toulouse-Lautrec, Rothko, Giacometti, Motherwell.

I get inspired by the beauty of nature, music, culture, art, and social surroundings. I get inspired by the small things, the details that go unnoticed, things that catch my eye, the experiences. I love different landscapes, especially the ocean. The ocean is where I find my grounding and my sanity. I am truly inspired by the ocean, the sea, the water, the sky (skies), the magical sunrise and sunsets between the love of the Sun and the Earth. The sun and sky truly speak to me.

24
MEADOW

While every piece of art I create has its own sentiment for me, and each one is a part of me, my favorite piece I painted is Rhythm. I just painted it intuitively and spontaneously, going with the flow of the music without knowing how it will turn out. I truly love that piece! The passion that I put in it has so much meaning, movement and rhythm to me.

I learn something new with almost

every piece of artwork I create. It could be a new technique or realizing to simply let loose and let it flow and see it turns out. Most importantly, I have learned to not over work the painting.

I work in my home studio all day at different hours throughout the day. However, the best time I get more productive and flow is after 9:00pm., when my family goes to sleep and there is no interruptions.

I forget the time and will be up painting until 3:00 or 4:00 am.

I do not have any hidden messages in my work. However, the colors convey certain messages and emotions of joy, happiness, serenity, heartache or anger. The brush and palette strokes help convey the story.

The people in the Figurative Abstracts I paint are related to me, they are my self-portrait. I portray them in silhouettes or very abstracted – some of the other paintings are from my dream and imagination, not from a

photograph. They are all a version of me (other than the ones of my daughters on the beach with surf boards). These women in the silhouettes can be any woman, strong and bold.

I am currently exhibiting a selection of my artwork at the Artist Eye Gallery in Laguna Beach, California. Glaieul is the Featured Artist for November 2022.

The goal of the artist is, through playful and continuous experimentation, to find new ways to depict the abstract the most colorful way possible mixing traditional techniques and modern technologies. Experience in various fields allows the artist to combine algorithms-assisted design with 3D printed tools and equipment to enrich the canvas with meaning and a feast for the eye. With the use of the complete spectrum of colors and unusual color pairings – including neon and iridescent colors – abstractions will result in non-traditional outcomes.

Cherishing both the structured and the turbulent, various geometrical shapes are applied to play with the intuitive sensations while embracing the rich heritage of hard-edge, color field and

opart movements. During the exploration of the relationship between colors and shapes, the firm borders in between are

either emphasized or completely neglected, resulting in a mixture of structured chaos.

The vast majority of the artworks are done as a part of a slow process, as paint is being applied in a number of layers – dozens, or even more. Besides the structured approach, there is always room for playfulness and experiment, sometimes even at the price of sacrificing perfection. It is important to leave marks of the human creator’s hand, as we should not and definitely cannot compete with the digital perfection of the modern day. Instead, accepting imperfections coming from the process leads to gratefully embracing the fallibility of the individual.

Maria Lans, Woman in the sea sky - A woman lost in the sky and the sea. Time and place, all turned around. What is up and what is down? Is there any straight line between time and ages or do we coexist at the same time? Is our real face visible or is it all a theatre? Where is the core? is there any? We are stuck in a ground that is moving.

James Thompson, Figure in Repose - Acrylic on canvas. Completed in one sitting. Using a limited Zorn palette I work directly from life and as such, I work with haste. 20+ years in advertising lends my work a graphic style, with a strong sense of line. This figure was captured in repose, perhaps even asleep.

Edward Ficklin, Offering 1: Water, a tentative resolve - A passive male figure is not unheard of in Western art, but passive in the form of a willing offering of themselves is not so common. It’s something I wanted to explore more in this work (and two more in the series). While the offering could have taken the form of something more mundane like a religious or political allegory, I wanted to instead go deeper. What if the offering is being made to something inhuman, otherworldly? Well then you have the subversive thrill of a male figure, usually associated with control and power, willingly giving in to, seeking union with larger elemental forces.

Lea Ervin, Scattered Pain - This painting represents the physical and mental struggle of living with endometriosis. A year ago, I started painting to explore the body and what it means to live with chronic pain and mental illness. This piece is a part of my “Scattered Pain” series in which I depict what is happening inside my body on the outside to give a visual representation of the symbiosis of chronic pain, ADHD, and OCD. The pelvic regions of the figure have a touch of red to depict the pain and inflammation one experiences with endometriosis along with the scattered colors that represent a neurodivergent brain. It is difficult to express in words the experience of living in this body, so it was necessary to create a visual representation of life.

There are few more stunning examples of this unique tree than can be found along the purple lined pathways of New Farm Park as they follow the meandering Brisbane River. Maria Evseeva, Asking the Universe - **** How often do we turn our eyes to the stars? How often do we ask why I am here? Which is the meaning of my life? Where did we come from and where do we go? Everyone asks their own questions to the universe. But sometimes we forget about looking for an answer. This work came as a result of these reflections. We are made of stardust, we and the universe are one. Our home is the universe.

Birke Dedig, Strong Backbone - As an abstract artist you never know beforehand what your painting will be like in the end. “Strong Backbone” was created in a time when I went through a lot of changes and challenges in my life. When I looked at the finished painting, I immediately realized that my soul was splashed out on the canvas before me. My painting reflected exactly what I was experiencing emotionally. Up to that point I thought I was just somehow getting through the rough patch in my life, barely hanging in there, somehow getting through each day. But when looking at my finished artwork I knew that I actually did much more than that: This hard time has made me stronger, had required me to get up no matter what and to keep going strong.

Megan Zuelke, Light at the end of the tunnel - This is one of my first works, I named quite literal early on. I love using the deep blue shades because they behave in the most beautiful way. In nature we see blue so often and it is a critical color in our world, however in this painting the blue transforms you to another place, where something bigger is possible. I wanted to empower the viewer to see light in their own life or even beyond this world. The 3 figures are prominent for balance in nature. Mind, Body , Spirit. Land, Sea, Sky. Also the many spectrums in life including Male, Female and everything in-between.

Sue Trusler, FEAR IN DARKNESS - began with a sheet of paper that was covered with acid free tissue, creating texture. Picking it up, I saw a face then more and more appeared. I later discovered Pareidolia is a psychological phenomenon that causes the human brain to give significance and facial features to random patterns. I became absorbed with the faces that continued to appear, the longer I viewed the random pattern. Some were quite grotesque, prompting the title of this piece, that literally created itself, appearing from nowhere. Selected for an Open Art Exhibition at Turner House Gallery Penarth. it has prompted a lot debate, opening up an exciting new style for me to explore. Maria Lopes, Wrapping a Dream - “Wrapping a Dream” sets a new approach in my art as an emergent artist. Using, for the first time, mixed media - acrylic and oil – I have opened a new path in my art. These two mediums give the work an explosion of color and texture, materializing the power of my emotions. The painting talks about my world of dreams and the need I always had to wrap them inside of me, reflecting the repression I lived so many years by not fulfilling my dream of becoming an artist. Dreams are deep visions that we should not repress or ignore for they speak to our soul.

Mike McKeown, Something I May Never Find - This piece is part of my “Natural Elements” series, where I explore abstracted representations of objects and patterns found in nature and space. “Something I May Never Find” is inspired by telescope images of deep space galaxies which we’ll never actually see with our own eyes. Created with a stippling technique where the paint slowly depletes itself, the solid elements slowly break apart at the edges, creating a sense of impermanence. The title is a nod to song lyrics by musical artist Weyes Blood in her song “Andromeda”.

Steve Jensen, The Ice is Melting - For me, boats are meant to symbolize a voyage or journey. My parents are from Norway. My father and grandfather were fishermen. My other grandfather was a boat builder. Upon the death of both of my parents, I made a boat for their ashes and buried them at sea. Something like a contemporary Viking funeral. I also made a boat for my best friend and former partner of 24 years, again burying them at sea. These deaths were extremely tragic. My best friend died of AIDS, my father committed suicide with a gun, my mother fell apart emotionally and physically and my former partner from alcoholism. What I am attempting to do is to take something that was personally painful and turn it into something beautiful.

We feel the art on our skin and blur the boundaries of the art experience. “ART&COUTURE” dresses carry the artist’s message and have an energy of their own. Lucia Boaghe, The sunrise, oil on canvas board, 45x60 cm -This work is part of a diptych, meant to show the beauty of life from different perspectives and time. Sun itself as a planet is the symbol of life, the energy that keeps everything alive on Earth. Sunflower fragile and ephemeral as any other flower is the symbol of love, devotion, optimism and peace. It turns towards the sun to capture the energy of love and every day is a new beginning. It forgets the night and is ready again to follow the sun during its short life. Lucia Boaghe, The sunset, oil on canvas board, 45x60 cm - This work is part of a diptych completing the sunrise. The sunset is about day and night, ups and downs and the duality of life. The fragile sunflower’s sadness during the sunset is a metaphor of dark time in a human life. Different purple shades in this painting are calling to reflect on our life connecting to the universe and higher self. As the coolest colour in the spectrum purple takes us to reflection and meditation, to cooling down and understand the beauty of life in all its phases. Deeply connected with the Earth, with its strong roots and following the Sun, the sunflowers are the symbol of love, peace and optimism.

I work with traditional oil painting, predominantly focusing on matters of composition. I consistently explore formal relations and draw on the history of figurative painting, portraying subjects from contemporary, everyday life. In order to reach the state of perfect visual harmony—my ultimate goal—I have been constructing my works in a way that each element of the composition becomes irreplaceable support for the arrangement of others. Lou Patrou, Traveler - Traveler, is an acrylic painting on watercolor paper, 30” x 41”, done in 2022. I was thinking of two things when I came up with the concept for this painting; time travel and the idea of timelessness of soul or spirit. Putting an upside down face in the piece was both a thematic idea (spinning thru time and dimension) and an artistic treatment. The premise is that the faces are the same being that is stopped in motion mid “travel”. The background represents the fabric and membranes of inter-dimensions and time.

A time that also demanded a lot from me as ‘The Child Iris’ in the often brutal feeling of irretrievability of some thought puzzle pieces that now resemble a peaceful landscape, for example that of a carefree childhood. Before her alert mind threatens to sink completely into the depths of oblivion, I continue to proudly see her before me.

Quentina Lynchberg, Project N. - During the 2020 pandemic I spent my days in close contact with my mother, who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease. Her constant loss of memory, paired with the tormenting situation the world was facing, made me wonder how I could use images to describe identity. Project N. was born as a starting point for reflection on the loss of identity and its consequent research. I built a “Black Room”, a cube divided in half by a wall, in which people can enter. On the wall there is a bidirectional mirror reflecting the image of whoever enters the cube. I am on the other side of the wall and I can see the people through the mirror, although they can’t see me. So, they can experience a deeper connection with themselves.

Sue Ransley, Friends Round Friday - Family life to us has always centred around our kitchen table. I want to feed people. I have to make cake if family or friends are coming round. So I decided I should celebrate that table, and acknowledge all the conversations that happened around it. The rows. The celebrations. The birthdays. The highs and lows of our family life. And this memory of one of my daughters with a bunch of her friends seemed appropriate – a big batch of Spag Bol had been made, and they were all chattering away, giggling, having a good time. It always felt a privilege to quietly be in the background pottering around, hearing all their chat. Those are important moments, as you learn how your children fit into their peer group.

J Max, Walking Colours of 2022 - This paint is an artwork produced in late summer 2022. The expressionist brushstroke mixes colours of different mood and intensity. The dominance of red, yellow and blue towards a colourful harmony is intended to leave the observer to think about life and love. The artist usually creates his works playfully and with a lot of joy, passion and impulses that is mirrored in the drawing. The restlessness of the brush and the various colours used remind of a childhood that needs to be guarded.

is indeed a world

this world. And it´s constantly moving. As a philosopher without words, I try to make milkglas permeable… over the time, however, I realized that words and language were to `brained` and that it lacked the means to express what there was to say. In non-objective painting I the found exactly this possibility of expression. It leads from the depth into the depth of an experience of beeing, it is another, for me more open form of communication, which is grasped with other senses and leaves more scope and freedom.

Liz Darrell, Underrated - Underrated is a meditation on thoughts and treatments towards vulvas and vaginas. For those of us who are born with them, we are suddenly launched into a world where a mysterious and terrible being lives between our legs: something so truly flabbergasting that full grown adults tremble at the idea of naming it publicly. Truly, people’s most frequent reference to vaginas are as insults. The fact is though, that they’re a very necessary part of life, as well as often an enjoyable one. This piece is meant to encourage care for the vulva and vagina both in actuality and in our thinking on it theoretically. Andela Tucakovic, Through the eyes of Behemoth - Andela is a Croatian figurative painter whose theatrical symbolic narratives enriched by the language of mood in literature often reflect the idea of nausea of uncertainty through compositions that critically examine seemingly ordinary everyday life. The title of the work suggests the influence and the intermedial interpretation of Bulgakov’s masterpiece The Master and Margarita. The expressed duality of light and dark in all aspects is juxtapositioned through a double self-portrait, one showered in light, and the other in semi-darkness. Elusiveness is perpetually projected in the mirrors’ reflection, shifting as constantly as our emotional impressions of the transitory surroundings of the mundane. is a metaphorical portrait of who I am at the end of a year of hurting and healing. It is inspired by Kintsugi, the Japanese tradition of mending cracked pottery with golden lacquer, which creates a far more precious piece than the original. Likewise, the wounds we suffer become sources of resilience and personal growth, sculpting a sterling version of ourselves. Catarina Diaz, Zenobia, Serenity - Only time allows us to look over our shoulders with the serenity that experience gives us. This female figure with oriental features symbolises this maturity. From the back of her head proliferate golden flowers and green foliage. Three cranes fly above them. They represent loyalty, peace and longevity, concepts also mirrored in the delicate profile of this woman. But the whole composition comes to life behind the image of a feline, which seems to observe something out of our sight. Iris Katharina Salzburger-Lindlar, Life and all its suffering - This painting seems to depict an attitude to life of our time. Although it was created in 2015, I have never been able to develop such a strong connection to this work as I have before. In the creative process, the artist’s ego often defends itself against these forces, which the picture can produce, but the last two years in particular have opened my eyes to this through the increasing borderline experiences of the pandemic. Persistent exhaustion redraws our faces and quietly gnaws at our hearts. We seem more trapped in a nebulous state than smugly wrapped in cotton. Who couldn’t despair about it and give room to tears?

Clinton Willis, The Artist In Reds And Mars Violet - My self-portrait is an oil painting influenced by the German expressionists of the early 20th century. Artists such as Max Beckmann, Ernst Kircher, and Emile Nolde have helped inspire me. My goal as an expressionist isn’t to capture realistic aspects surrounding the subject but rather the subjective emotions and responses that objects and events arouse within a person. I wanted my portrait to capture a stoic mood. As if an individual was looking at a statue rather than an oil painting of a man. When looking at the face, hardly any well-defined features stand out. When looking at the eyes in the portrait, they are deep and shaded in order to create an expressionless gaze.

Ben Freeland, Kyiv, 2022 - I’m selecting this piece as I feel it is very relevant to the time we live in. It is A1 and painted in oils on a wooden board. The essence of the painting is that of the horror that’s occurring to our Ukrainian brothers and sisters, and how I chose to portray it in my own style as you can see. The result is achieved by treating my photograph as the canvas, interpreting as I repaint the picture by hand digitally in layers to achieve washes, and enlarging the image to paint pixel by pixel where detail requires.
