ARTIST TALK MAGAZINE
New York City is one of the world’s most visited cities. The city is densely packed with some of the tallest skyscrapers on the planet. One of the most famous locations is Times Square. This is the world famous intersection centre, which is dazzlingly lit by plentiful billboards and advertisements, this all being a spectacular visual display to see.
Times Square after the Great Depression and World War II looked very different to what it currently looks like now. From the 60’s crime rates were very high and continued to increase throughout the years. Adult allurements played a big role. This is well captured in the tv series The Deuce, James Franco and Maggie Gyllenhaal star in a gritty drama
from David Simon, that traces the evolution of the porn industry in NYC’s Times Square in the 1970s.
In 2018, the New York City Economic Development Council, created a short documentary about the economic transformation. Against All Odds, tells the story through interviews with the people who made this transformation happen. This includes the following project leaders, real estate developers, architects, law enforcement officials and historic preservationists.
Artist Talk Magazine is proud to add to the fantastic history of the location, by showcasing art digitally.
Standing at 22 stories tall on 3 Times Square, also known as the
Thomson Reuters, This display consists of 2 high definition LED screens and state-of-the-art technology.
It shows prominently to the hundreds of thousands of vehicles and pedestrians that make their way through Times Square each day. In addition, this iconic display lies directly adjacent to 7 Times Square, home of the famous New Year’s Eve Ball.
This exciting exhibition will be taking place on Thursday 22nd June 2023.
We will be showcasing a range of work from 64 incredible artists.
Midtown Manhattan, which contains the Times Square subdistrict, is the largest central business district in the world and is a key economic driver for New York City as a whole. The area is home to the headquarters of major national and international businesses, as well as the Nasdaq Stock Exchange.
At over 10,500 total square feet, the full-motion digital display also marks a significant 40% increase in size over its predecessor. With its towering spire, the Midtown Financial ascends nearly 300 feet off grade, making it one of the largest and highest reaching displays in all North America. Thank you to everyone involved.

Gia Sabatini, In BLOOM - In Bloom is the exploration of the emotion through color and textures. I wanted to create a piece that would simulate the idea of coming out of a dark place. The bright colors and explosive shapes are my thoughts of what joy would look like after depression. The dark background is symbolic of the past or grief. The cracks symbolize that the pain we experience carries on with us. We should not think of grief and loss as a thing we want to escape from. These are emotions that help shape us into the people we are. They are beautiful in their own way. My work up to this point was very dark and was my way of dealing with the loss of a loved one.

Glaieul Samadani, Soul Surfer - This work is part of the Abstract Figurative series and it is a portrait of my daughter at her surf competition in Malibu, California. As she faces the ocean in front of her, it represents the world waiting to be explored, the future, new adventures and perseverance. Doina is a solemn and lyrical folkloric song, marking the essence of Romanian folklore. It can be sung in any social context, with or without instrumental accompaniment. Doina is representative for the peasant’s soul, expressing his most intense emotions. 160 x 190 x 3.5 cm - “Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka” is for me a paradoxical metaphor, originally a collection of short stories by the Ukraine writer Nikolai Gogol, written 1829–32, stories we all knew and loved in our childhood, heavily laced with Ukrainian folklore and cultural references, offering a unique perspective into life in the country in Gogol’s time. The dark allegory came to me in March this year when I learned of the excesses of the Russian army in Bucha Ukraine, meaningful for me because of close friends and early years there.

Culture should be accessible to the whole population rather than restricted to elitist structures.cNew York is an excellent example to showcase the concept, but the project is aimed at smaller towns where art and culture have yet to arrive. The lack of culture among people is frequently mentioned. But what efforts have been made to provide them with cultural opportunities? Culture should be accesible to all rather than being limited to elitist structures such as galleries, fairs, collectors, and auction houses that dominate and shape art and culture. People need to hold art in their hands to be understood, felt, shared and lived. Cities must have cultural elements to progress.

I also made a boat for my best friend and former partner of 24 years, again burying them at sea. These deaths were extremely tragic. Michaela Kindle & Daniel Ricardo González, Masquerade - Masquerade is part of the series “Fragments of a Forgotten Symphony”. The moment when the past and the future meet, blend, and give rise to the now. The present moment that transforms the lessons of the past into hope of what is to come. German born artists and photographers Michaela Kindle and Daniel Ricardo González create their own surreal fairytales by combining architectural scenes with layers of imagination. González puts his focus on traveling the world to capture extraordinary architecture which then is turned into magical places by Kindle.

Tannaz Shoaei Rad, Women power - I have been living in Dubai since 1998. Holding a Master of Arts. I’m doing Oil painting and acrylic. When you have a dream, you’ve got to grab it & never let go. Keep your face always towards the sunshine, and shadows will fall behind you and power. The power of freedom is higher than the energy of flames from volcanoes. With a renewed sense of purpose, we move forward like birds drifting in the wind, leading us to a better life.

Pedro Kubrick, Dopamine - My artwork ¨Dopamine¨ is a work that develops in a surreal environment that is composed of pastel colors that make you travel to the natural and is related to joy. This work is inspired by the universe, music and a bit of nature. The central character is composed of futuristic and cheerful costumes. I want this image to transmit joy and relaxation through its colors and environment, that’s why I titled it Dopamine. In general terms, the 3 works I have been working with this year are developed within pastel and cheerful environments to accompany people in their homes and connect with their positive emotions. Nadine Kooiker, Shattered - Shattered is an intuitive painting. Her first step towards creating bigger and bolder artworks. It resembles a part of the inner world of the artist. Therapeutic colours. Shapes. Layers. Healing. Closely follows her journey back to herself. Uncovering bit by bit, piece by piece, whilst narrating her own story. Who is she when everything is stripped away. Who are you? Who will you become? Slowly, trying to put the pieces back together. To create a new perspective. A new self.

Jennifer Jean Okumura, Démasquer, our lives and dreams - Démasquer, our lives, and our dreams represent our resilience, healing, solidarity, and freedom narratives. Here there are no mistakes. It is our story - alive, noteworthy, always original, not blinded by hunger, poverty, love, and hate. Humanity in every color - Humanity is colorblind. The frailness in emotions, the memories in our heads, the damages left in our hearts from life events but ultimately Hope for ourselves and others - this work captures the beauties of what we call life, all that is love and art.

Maria Lopes, Moving On - Moving on to move forward… I often say this to myself in order to go further in life and in my art. This painting was exactly that. I knew I had to push myself much more in order to achieve better clarity and understanding about where my art was taking me, and working with oil and cold wax on canvas is an amazing world to explore, mainly in terms of texture. I worked in layers and then carved them in order to show what was under but, at the same time, tried to give a feeling of movement… Like life itself moving on… We are built of so many layers and often we do not let others see what’s under.

Philipp Strodtkoetter - When I started painting 6 years ago, I tried wildly in all realistic directions until I landed on my love, portraits. I am fascinated every time that a face always built the same and frozen in a single movement can convey so much emotion, feelings and stories. Each one is held in contrast with the hair to play with the viewer’s focus. As a person, I like to talk, but I don’t say much. In my art, the opposite is true. I give a lot of importance to details and I am not afraid to paint over a finished painting for lack of affection on my part.

Tatiana Guseva, Higher vibe - So that you can feel the difference between warm and cold, you definitely feel when your mind is open and your heart is loving. What does it feel like to be open for love? It is like if you have just come out of your protective shell, everything feels new and magical and you can finally relax and stretch yourself. The perception of this world changes and you start to see things as they really are with acceptance and care. Now we are not talking of love as of a relationship. By love we mean state mind, a true way of human being.

Doriana Sinnett, The Dance Of The Creator - Creativity is never rational on the contrary it comes from deep within. It finds its way out by imposing itself on us. As a dance it takes us into frantic and subtle rhythms. It can’t be tamed by reason. We simply surrender to it as it dances through our being.

Her practice embraces bright vivid colors that contrast with one another to create dynamic illusions. Pop art and street culture intersect in a cohesive abstract form. Rosemary Coan, You Betcha It’s Heart! - The work is inspired by professional model and dancer Janet Mayer, and her co-creator Matthew Lawrence of Drawing Cabaret Couture. The design is by fashion designer David Paulus and hair by Anne Veck. I delved into this drawing reminiscing of fashion illustration heyday and fashion bible, WWD. I always felt art is fashion and fashion art. Paulus exemplifies that. To me and by my life experiences the covered face and hearts symbolize teamwork. All players give heart into practice, production, and presentation of fashion. This composition and rendering hold standards of merchandising the garment and use of playful gesture to accentuate fabric and design.

Erick Mota, WU-TANG FOREVER / ALICIA - In this captivating painting, the Wu-Tang Clan takes center stage, their electrifying performance immortalized in black and white strokes while their iconic “W” hangs above, a stunning visual focal point radiating a golden glow that contrasts against the grayscale palette.
This oil painting of Alicia Keys captures a mesmerizing moment from her unforgettable performance at the Grammys in 2019. Titled “Alicia,” this artwork epitomizes her musical prowess and enchanting stage presence. The painting portrays Alicia Keys in the midst of a magical performance, where she defies the boundaries of possibility by simultaneously playing two pianos.

Erick Mota, YEEZY SEASON APPROACHING / DIGRESS 3 - “Yeezy Season Approaching” captures the vibrant essence of a Kanye West concert during his Saint Pablo tour. In this painting the intention was to express the electrifying atmosphere of the event, set against the iconic backdrop of Madison Square Garden. The centerpiece of the artwork is a floating stage, seemingly defying gravity, upon which Kanye West commands the spotlight. “Digress 3” is the newest one in the ‘Digress’ series, which further symbolizes how life unexpectedly digresses in ways we didn’t plan or prepare for. Owls can be interpreted to represent transformative change, intuition, intellect, wisdom, and understanding.

Erick Mota, THE GAME OF LIFE - While every human has the chance to hear God’s truth and choose whether to respond to it, the masterful battle between God versus The Devil is like a chess-match, in which we are the pieces. From the perspective of mankind, the battle of right vs. wrong, light vs. darkness, and good vs. evil, begins with a clash of values with God, being a meta-physical entity, destined to win the battle against the author of sins, in “The Game of Life.”

Erick Mota, KING JAMES - ”King James” is an evocative painting capturing the electrifying presence of basketball legend LeBron James during his tenure with the Cleveland Cavaliers. The canvas brims with a vibrant energy as James, portrayed in vibrant, colorful detail, stands tall at center stage. Bathed in a spotlight’s glow, he prepares to perform his iconic chalk toss, a ritualistic prelude to his game-time dominance. The brushstrokes recreate his commanding figure, radiating strength and determination in this oil painting of LeBron James. Erick Mota, DIGRESS / VULVA VOLVO - This painting represents the digression of how we think life is supposed to go versus how it actually ends up. After studying Freudian dream interpretations in my psychology undergrad, I became fascinated with the meanings of owls.
The inspiration for this Vulva painting derived from my teenage self, but the meaning runs much deeper. My father has a thick Venezuelan accent and, when he would refer to the family car that was a gray Volvo at the time, it literally sounded like he was saying “Vulva.” I found this humorous at the time, but did not foresee that it would evolve into a painting many years later with an entirely different meaning to me.

Erick Mota, WALK THROUGH FIRE WITH YOU - Two people in a relationship—perhaps lovers, siblings, or friends—stand ready to take on the world together. Hand in hand, they will walk through all adversity, for “walking through fire,” means to face danger or pain. This couple’s painting signifies devotion, and a resolve to accomplish life together. They stand at the edge of steps, or a bridge, and if you notice, there is no grounding or footing they can step to next. They know this, and yet, they choose to go forward. The fire is bright, vibrant, and blazing, but together, they will face the odds.

Erick Mota, CONCRETE JUNGLE - In ‘Concrete Jungle,’ I set out to capture the juxtaposition between nature and progress. While the scene looks serene -almost static - the warm tones of the sky, punctuated by the tall masculine shapes of the skyscrapers, lend the viewer some insight into the inner heart of the city. Even in peaceful scenes, this is a place of work, of struggle, the infinite battle between natural elements (the sky and water) and man’s progression towards civilization (the concrete materials and the ferry, which conquered the river).

Erick Mota, BRAIN VS. HEART: ROUND 1 - You’ve heard of the saying ‘the heart rules the head’ but in real life, things are never that simple. Every day we are forced to make decisions between our emotions and practicality, and I’ve depicted that war here. In this unique artwork, you’ll notice both the brain and the heart are tied in a boxing match. There is no winner in this battle, showing that they are both worthy foes – each the other’s equal canceling out the successes of the other part and each other’s nemesis, destined to fight for eternity.

Erick Mota, WATER THE FLOWERS IN MY SOUL - It can be argued that water is life’s most precious essence, adding newness to the weary world as it washes the ground clean, breathes life into even the most delicate of plants and refreshes our bodies from within. It is vital for the survival of all living creatures, especially us humans. But then there is the soul – equally as vital and as fluid as water, guiding us through life’s challenges in a way that the mere human form cannot. This sensual art piece celebrates the freedom of the soul, how it grows and develops into an entity bigger than love, bigger than religion, bigger than life itself.

Erick Mota, A WALK IN THE PARK / SUNFLOWERS ON THE BEACH - Two friends - or maybe lovers - stroll closely together in a fall-swept park as a row of street lamps light their way. It’s the hazy time of evening where the water looks majestic, reflecting a kaleidoscope of colors from the buildings across the lake. The park is location-less. This could be California, New York, Paris, London, yet it has a familiarity to it that reminds us of the comforts of home and the warmth that brings to our hearts.
‘Sunflowers on the Beach’ pays an ode to my passion for the beauty of mother nature. Historically, the Helianthus annuus has held a nuance of meaning for various cultures. Strength, like its stalk. Positivity, like the color yellow it bears. Discover More - www.ErickMotaArt.com / Instagram: @erickmotaart
Erick Mota, ULTRALIGHT BEAM - This painting represents the act of surrendering to God in the form of a “ultralight beam.” Since the term “surrender” implies a battle term, in which all rights are given up to the conqueror, the act of surrendering to God works the same. Surrendering the totality of oneself entails setting aside our plans, seeking a deeper intimacy with God, and trusting God’s plan. The “ultralight beam” renews our minds - helping to let go of control, worry, money, relationships, the future - while focusing on the contentment of today, rather than our eyes wandering towards what lies ahead tomorrow. This was one of those paintings in which I had the title before I knew what I was going to paint. Inspired by the Kanye West song, this painting helps the viewer let go of the past and focus on making room for the goodness, grace, and favor that God provides us.

Erick Mota, NEW DAY - As an artist, I use art as a form of communication for my thoughts and feelings through a flawed medium. This contemporary artwork is created by layer upon layer of oil paint to create a whirlpool effect that hints at a world beyond the swirling water of the foreground. By entitling this piece “New Day,” I hope to reach the down, the weary and the defeated with this modern oil painting and let them know that, while the circular whirlpool appears infinite, it will one day subside, as will the struggles they’re facing. A new day will, one day, arrive!
