The world of art has no borders, age or nationality limit. This universe of wonders is open for every heart and mind. Once accidentally I got an acquaintance with Filipino. He came to Ukraine on business, but afforded to enjoy our modern painting. How did the guy from Manila fall in love with Ukrainian modern art at the first sight you could read on our pages.
ART
is known to be the best way to connect people of different minds all over the world. Art is often intended to appeal and connect with human emotion. It can arouse aesthetic or moral feelings, and can be understood as a way of communicating these feelings. Among the main targets of art scientists often highlight entertainment, propaganda, lustration, self-
actualization, social intercourse. But I guess such list can hardly illustrate the inner side of art. As Aristotle said, «Imitation, then, is one instinct of our nature.» So the art means to be something humans must do by their very nature. Non-motivated functions of art includes humans desire to be in harmony with the world, have some balance. It is also experience of the mysterious, expression of the imagination and all-
day requirement of communication. Art became a common ground for everyone. Last Saturday I ensured in that statement once more. I’ve never been to Philippines and never heard a lot about their culture or some widespread traditions. It was only the land far, far away in my mind. But then I met John and everything was changed. John is my new friend from Philippines. He lives in Manila with his family; by chance he arrives to Ukraine and stays here on business for some time. One of our weekends we decided to devote to the guided tour. The first point of our program was the Art gallery of modern Ukrainian artist Yevgenia Gapchinska. To tell you the truth it was the first time I’ve been there, in spite of my faithful love to Yevgenia’s creativity. So my impressions were the similar to John. It was a snowy day resembling to the fairy tale, when everything seems possible and fancy at the same time. John, who saw the falling snow at first, was really impressed. High spirits was appended with the smiles of cute angels on the canvas. The Gallery was large and bright, the air smelled of joy, little secrets and pranks. There were hundred children eyes: cheerful, subtle, curious, full of dreams and expectancies. “The painting I like the most is that one” - said John, pointing the canvas “Swan Lake”. “How many kinds of emotions express each of these ballet dancers! They are the little girls but their faces are so spiritual, full of adult questions and inner harmony. The inscriptions are so warm and tremulous. In spite of my commitment to the classical art (my favorite Philippine artists are Juan Luna and Jose Rizal) I was gratefully surprised with such individual way of painting”. After John’s approving words touching upon Ukrainian modern art I took an interest in Philippine contemporary painting. I raved about the Roma Valles creativity. Her paintings are gorgeously sensual, thoughtful and powerful. Every canvas expresses her identity, inner voice and features which are inherent only to Roma Valles. Someone says that her canvases are more like a photo than a painting in the classic sense. How many men, so many opinions. Actually, Roma’s style of painting is really specific. It is based on the redrawing of the snapshots. She came to this kind of style due to her teacher Roberto Chabet. She
made her copy only what she saw. From there, Roma discovered her own way of painting, choice of work and subjects she wanted to paint. There was a time when Roma’s friend challenged her to paint a close up black and white image of an angry pitbull. That’s how her series on black and white started. Roma tried to redraw only those photos she found strong. She painted what appealed to her and those I assessed would come out very good as paintings. The subjects Roma found enjoyable or even challenging with light and shadow, depth, texture and details, subjects with rich and contrasting colors, and black and whites. Her talent is in the capturing the reality of the images she put on canvas. She also puts an illusion of depth in her works. Chabet once commented that Roma’s works are sharper than Photoshop. One of the last Roma’s exhibitions is the Voyage, where the five works in oil that depict man’s journey through life are presented. Painting large-scale everyday scenes and images in realistic, photo-like detail, Valles notes that each of the five pieces “shows a parallelism to everyday challenges and circumstances that we go through.” One of the works, titled “Next in Line” (oil on canvas, 36” x 72”), features a woman waiting in line. “It is a part of life,” observes Valles. “We react to it differently, and how we react to it, patiently or not, gracefully or not, ends up uniquely as a result of our actions.” In “Options,” Valles takes us to a parking lot where there are two cars parked, as if the drivers chose to be early birds. Then, there is “5 a.m. (oil on canvas, 48” x 48”)”, where we only see a silhouette of a woman routinely walking through the dark at 5 in the morning. “It shows that familiarity can make our daily lives flow flawlessly, or it may also mean that familiarity can make things very boring.” Valles provides the setting in which viewers can come up with their own stories as the images presented mirror everyday circumstances. As for me, I was impressed with the description of child. A little boy in the form of a sailor is sitting on the stairs and laughing.
