“If art is to nourish the roots of our culture, society must set the artist free to follow his vision wherever it takes him… We must never forget that art is not a form of propaganda; it is a form of truth.”

Dear friends QIAF 2019 is the 2nd edition for this art event in the region that connects the artist worldwide with live painting, Group Painting Exhibition, Qatar Cultural Tour, Panel Art Show, Award Ceremony Evening and many more. This year we have introduced 1 more feather to our festival with Artistic Fashion Show, which shows the 3 dimensions for Art in respect of Fashion wearables, Home furnishings and Art in its natural way. It is extremely important to bring global artist, art experts-connoisseur, art critic and art academician in the region together on the shared platform. You can fulfill many people hunger by giving them food but it’s a big and rewarding thing if you fulfill somebody’s dream. Everyone lives for a dream and if their dream is accomplished by help of someone, it’s a blessing of the Almighty to that human being. The Artistic passion is not defined by a degree in Art or commerce, its immortal seed inside of everyone and the moment you nourish these seeds with your passion, devotion, effort, time and methods, it is grown in such a way that creates its smell to its environment and inspiration to everyone. We share the importance of the arts, not only in society but also in building one’s self-esteem. We get first miracles from Nature itself in every form by nourishing an Art. My dream towards QIAF was very simple and Divine but the road was not so easy. I was ecstatic because I loved this theme to work on. As we say that when are on the right path, many obstacles come but those obstacles are really sign of showing that we are doing right and accomplish something very big. Big risk comes with Big Dreams and Big Achievements. With every rising of the sun, think of your life as just begun. A wish changes nothing. A decision changes everything. Wish you all a very happy & successful life. Rashmi Agarwal President- MAPS International WLL Head of the Event- QIAF

KATARA The Cultural Village Foundation Katara aims to create environment that helps nurture and promote arts through various cultural initiatives as well as intellectual and art programs and events that all contribute to the promotion of arts and enrichment of creativity. Katara further aims to activate and support the cultural works and bring it to the international level while preserving the Arab and Islamic identity in a Qatari style that builds upon its cultural and architectural legacy, which meets the needs of today. Through the establishment of this cultural icon, Qatar wanted to position itself as a cultural beacon and a crossroad for all cultures around the world.

The meaning of “Katara” name Since the year 150 AD, “Catara” was the first and most ancient name designated for Qatar Peninsula in geographic and historical maps. The name first appeared on the map drawn by the geographer Claudius Ptolemaeus in 150 AD, published in 882 AD -1477 AD and later in the Historical Atlas of Islam, in which the peoples of the Arabian Peninsula in the middle of the second century AD were identified. It also stipulated the geographical location of Qatar Peninsula under the name of Catara, North West of Gerra, and to the west of the town of Cadara. The name “Katara” appeared in the geographical and historical maps in early eighteenth century AD. In a French map of the Arabian Peninsula coast line, sea and gulf, the name was written “Katara” instead of “Catara,” which was the designation used by geographers since the map of Ptolemaeus was drawn in 150 AD until 1738 AD.

Vision of Katara Our vision is to be a world leader for multi-cultural activities. Contributing to the achievement of Qatar National Vision 2030, we dedicate every effort to nurturing social development through art and cultural exchange. We are aspiring to build a community of creative and innovative individuals, who are aware of their surroundings and are knowledgeable about global cultures.

Jeff Mugagga Wamala Uganda

Jayne Louise Shearer New Zealandz In 2006 she completed her Bachelor of Visual Arts and Design. While at Art School she was drawn to Pop Art and Andy Warhol’s Marilyn Monroe Paintings and Screen prints. The Luscious lips and his use of vibrant vivacious colour led her to look at the place of beauty and glamour in today’s consumer society and its effect on identity - She was painting and drawing multiple lips with pencil and paint in an attempt to signify the beautiful surfaces of the things we love to buy, to own and to consume. It then evolved into using my own lips to kiss the canvas and paper using lipstick thus short-circuiting the need to paint and draw multiple lips. I use my own lips as a ‘printer’. The act of kissing the surface of the canvas represents the love for the ‘beautiful things’ with which we surround ourselves. She started out using just one lipstick colour and composing monochromatic pictures but eventually got her hands on as many colours as she could.

Originating from the “Pearl of Motherland Africa – Uganda”, Wamala is an artist with the passion for tradition. Coming from the tropics, he grew up enjoying bananas as his culture’s staple food but little did he know that besides enjoying the banana fruit, its fiber on the plant can also be useful in various ways, art being one of them, thanks to the numerous mosaic art classes attended in art school back in the day along with the guidance and inspiration of his elder brother Lubega. A mosaic is a piece of art or image made from the assembling of small pieces of various materials including glass, stone etc., for Wamala’s case, banana fiber which to many is a waste product. Being the passionate African, Wamala decided to specialize in mosaic art using banana fiber as his primary raw material as he compliments it with other traditional materials like the bark cloth.Bark cloth is a soft and supple fabric material scrapped from the outer bark of fig trees locally called “mutuba tree” (ficus natalensis) A combination of these two materials or one of them makes exquisite art pieces as Jeff may so wish basing on the different patterns he chooses to follow and why.

She decided to carry what has been instilled by culture and history into this new realm of existence. Furthermore with the intent of preserving these historical, national or mythical motifs and symbols in mind, she utilize special techniques and a variety of compounds to produce strong and durable works of art. The products are resistant to impact, corrosion and chemical attacks. They are moisture repellent and are also resistant to heat and direct sunlight. SONYA SOJI VARUGHESE India The Artist work depicts the nuances of life through the combination of numerous colors and textures. Being an abstract artist with expressionist and impressionist tendencies, her work deeply focuses on the inner energy vibrations and emotions; the present evokes at the moment of creation. The social, political, cultural and personal aspects of the moment influence the style and turn every individual artwork takes. This energy exchange that happens in her works is what resonates with the viewers of all competence. “As a self-taught artist, I have had the opportunity to explore many different mediums, forms, and disciplines in considerable depth. It feels natural for me to work so diversely. Challenging a person to see beyond the distraction of the obvious, and to capture life’s unique self to showcase its elusive quality, is what I strive to achieve through my art. My goal is to inspire those who see my work to look more carefully at the world around them, and notice its matchless splendour.”

SUSANA ANAYA

I painted always since I remember with Oil. But this 3D technique it was an experiment, after I saw an Interview of Gerhard Richter and I got inspired, then I started mixing colors and applying many layers on the canvas, over weeks. At the end I realized this two dimensional work was suddenly tridimensional. For me is the proportion has a very important role in my work, since I love aesthetics. Iit is very important that the relationship of the parts to each other and to the whole are in harmony, thus beauty. I create my own colors with pigments, because they are more much brighter and intense, than normal Oil colors. Furthermore, some colors you cannot buy from the tube. I can categorize my work in two types: Dynamic and Static paintings. Dynamic Paintings have more energy, are asymmetric with movement as the masculine energy. Static paintings are calm and stable, as the female energy. For me Art is the expression of a human cultural product, as a result of a creative process. The Work of process usually stands at the end of this process, but it can also be the process itself, since modern times. My inner motivation to paint, is to express with images my conscious and unconscious feelings with colors on canvas. Every color for me has an emotion, when I start to mix my own colors, I can feel his energy, so I begin to create. Then I get lost in the magic of colors, textures, and how they emerge showing a colorful magnificence. During this process I lose track of time and space. After I finish it, I am able to see the unconscious feeling captured in my conception. My biggest joy is when I reach people touching them deeply, perceiving how ecstatic they are, because my creations are able to transmit what I felt.

MKRTICH MAZMANIAN

Mazmanian is one of Armenia’s most well known figurative sculptors working mostly with bronze and marble. Mazmanian’s spatial sculptures which are ‘abstract yet contain realism’ are exactly that. They have intellectual inertia by showing human ambition, cultivation, awakening and evolution. Mazmanian’s unique style of sculpting and perspective comes from years of work experience exposed to various cultures, individuals, and epochs; although ultimately he has gained and learned the most from nature and the human figure. In fact most of Mazmanian’s work involves the human figure in all its beauty. Mazmanian’s latest collection of sculptures is entitled “The Middle Eastern Woman.” Living in war-torn Lebanon, where refreshing artistic therapy was in dire need, inspired it. Here in what became his home, emerged his new style of work containing turning, bending, stretching womens silhouettes.

ALEXANDER NAGORNY “My art is a reflection of the inner fabric of the universe, showing that everything in the world is interconnected... An event, action, thought at one end of the earth affects an event, action, thought at another end. This is universal dynamics, the connection of which is almost elusive on the physical level. But this connection exists.”

- Alexander Nagorny -

Alexander opened his own business and soon moved to China, spending most of his time between Beijing, Hong Kong and Russia. All his time and energy was consumed by work and there was no room for art and creativity. But after a series of dramatic events Alexander realised that it’s far more important to him to follow his calling for art, rather than being consumed by business that brings no moral satisfaction. Alexander’s deep spiritual worldview helped him returned to the creative path. He’s now a full time artist, devoting most of his time creating works in digital, multi media and in traditional art mediums. The latest series of digital paintings “God’s Threads” by Alexander Nagorny, successfully entered the life of contemporary art in New York City and was recently presented at two exhibitions: 1. Pop-up Contemporary Art Exhibition (Margo Gallery, September 2019, New York) 2. International Fall Art Exhibition at MoRA (Museum of Russian Art. October 2019, Jersey City, New Jersey)

I am Ferlander Arguedas a self-taught and self-sufficient artist from Costa Rica , I being painting since I was 9 years old, I do believe in magic and that every color has a frequency and vibration , that is why I love to delight the senses playing through colours and textures, they are intense, strong, vibrant, energetic, hallucinogenic and full of contrasts, each one reflecting connection and spontaneous movement. I like to flow with different styles , it can be a fusion of hipper realism , surrealism , abstract , figurative and a mixture of all making them very unique and joyful art , I also do play with numbers and codes and patterns which are hidden making them as cryptographic art, every piece of my art has a deep profound message which will make resonance with those in that level of conciseness and knowledge, my idea is to connect with that sensibility and magic already in the observer.
