MANDY EUGENIOU www.theblacktower.co.uk The Black Tower is an award-winning, experimental film using crowd-sourced, aftermath images of the burnt shell of Grenfell Tower, London. Homage to John Smith’s 1987 masterpiece whose narrator is preoccupied with a black tower that seems to follow them around. Here we join the conversation between myth & reality and the role of viewerwitness. Given how voyeurism underlies an engagement with spectacular violence, the film explores “Art After Grenfell” by putting the traumatic image under scrutiny. Film is accompanied by a word piece. Mandy Eugeniou’s work stems from an interest in how consciousness relates to boundaries in visual culture. Recent works have confronted image proliferation, (counter)memory and monumentality through notions of representation between space, time and body.
