introduction

I’d like to welcome you to the 15/16 Art of Time Ensemble concert season. We’re thrilled to once again present a selection of performances that explore and embrace a broad spectrum of musical styles.   This season’s concerts feel very true to the Art of Time ethos. They feature collaborations with remarkable artists and consistently push the limits of genre.   As always, we’re trying new things and welcoming new artists Hawksley Workman, Teng Li, Yehonatan Berick and Martha Burns among many others.   Take a moment to consider the offerings; it will be a beautiful, insightful, and fun season, and I hope you’ll join us.

TZIGANE The Influence of the Roma from Ravel to Flamenco to Django The curious roadmaps of influence are traced in a program that connects lesser known Roma musical traditions to popular styles from across Europe. Characteristics of Romani music –  rich ornamentation, unorthodox rhythms and dizzying speed – are on display in virtuosic performances of works by Brahms, Albéniz, Sarasate, Haydn and more.   The evening’s atmosphere will shift from concert hall to café with a performance by Van Django, playing in the hot jazz style made famous by Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli. Members of the Esmeralda Enrique Spanish Dance Company – amongst the best in their craft – will put on a stunning display of flamenco guitar and dance. date

TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT A New Holiday Concert Art of Time introduces a new holiday tradition with a characteristic twist. Top composers will craft classics, favourites and a few unexpected selections into new arrangements for four singers and Ensemble musicians.   Featuring chestnuts by Mel Torme and Irving Berlin, along with traditional holiday carols, the concert will also feature Duke Ellington’s Nutcracker Suite, based on the Tchaikovsky ballet, performed by a 17-piece big band. Tom Lehrer’s irreverent Hanukkah in Santa Monica along with seasonal fare by Joni Mitchell, Donny Hathaway, Tom Waits, John Lennon, the Pogues and John Prine complete a repertoire with variety that you’re unlikely to hear at any other holiday concert. date

ZAPPA The Genius of Irreverence of Genius From the psychedelia of the 60s to late classical compositions of the 80s: the music of Frank Zappa defies categorization. Selections from his decades long career are presented in arrangements that highlight Zappa’s penchant for complexity and ingenuity, drawing from styles that run the gamut of musical expression.   Marked by irreverent humour and remarkable sophistication, Zappa’s rich stew of musical creation – from rock to jazz to classical – will be explored with the respect and affection he reserved for his many influences.

ERWIN SCHULHOFF Dada, Jazz and the String Sextet : Portrait of a Forgotten Master A veteran of the First World War and a casualty of the Second, Prague-born Erwin Schulhoff was a member of the vanguard of creatives who bore witness to a rapidly changing world. Before his untimely death, Schulhoff experimented with his musical voice, writing works informed by dance rhythms, absurdist elements of the dada movement, jazz, and expressionism.   In this portrait concert, Schulhoff’s breadth is on display. Program highlights include Hot Sonate for alto saxophone and piano, the provocative Sonata Erotica for Soprano performed by Martha Burns, Five Jazz Etudes for Solo Piano and the masterful String Sextet.

HAWKSLEY WORKMAN A Postmodern Cabaret A force to be reckoned with in Canada’s music landscape, Hawksley Workman blurs the lines between rock music, cabaret and theatre. Workman will collaborate with Art of Time to create a Songbook like none we’ve done before, featuring the myriad styles that influenced his musical language, performed by one of Canada’s most dynamic and charistmatic performers.   The multi-instrumentalist and singer will examine the hard rock, folk, jazz, jazz/ rock fusion and new wave styles that inspired him on his rise to the top of the Canadian pop music scene.
