artistic director’s welcome

Welcome to the 17/18 Concert Season – our 19th. For nearly 20 years, Art of Time has been a wondrous laboratory in which to experiment. Music, theatre, poetry, film, visual art, technology, dance… materials ripe with possibilities, and the Art of Time Ensemble is the space in which we get to play. We bring together seemingly disparate genres of music, performance styles, and art forms and work them into something wholly new, while retaining the beauty and genius of the original components. For me, this season’s offerings are rooted in curiosity and experimentation, and focus on deepening our understandings and shifting our perspectives. I’m pleased and humbled to present another collection of concerts and invite you to join us once more as we explore the possibilities of music, art, and performance.

…HOSTED BY GLENN GOULD Gould’s Perspectives on Beethoven & Shostakovich Acknowledged as a musical genius, Glenn Gould was also known to be a great eccentric. Gould’s perspectives are presented, via screenings of CBC’s Glenn Gould on Television, as introductions to live performances of music by Ludwig van Beethoven and Dmitri Shostakovich. The concert promises to be an insightful evening and a fascinating investigation of both the music and the man.

SOUND AND COLOUR Synesthesia & Scriabin

Alexander Scriabin’s 24 Preludes, Op. 11 for piano are presented in a special solo performance by Andrew Burashko. Each of the preludes is bathed in an immersive colourfield experience, crafted by esteemed lighting designer Kevin Lamotte, corresponding to Scriabin’s synesthetic correlation of colour to music. Paired with a lecture about art and synesthesia (including insights on work by Wassily Kandinsky, Duke Ellington, Olivier Messiaen, Arnold Schoenberg, and Paul Klee), from renowned synesthesia expert, neurologist Dr. Richard Cytowic, (author of The Man Who Tasted Shapes and Wednesday is Indigo Blue) this show promises to be a feast for the ears, the eyes, and the mind.
