The Canadian Children’s Opera Company
performers andrew bur ashko Andrew Burashko is the founder and creative force behind Art of Time Ensemble. Born in Moscow, Burashko trained as a concert pianist across North America, making his solo debut with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra at the age of seventeen. As a soloist, Burashko performed with some of the world’s most renowned conductors, including Sir Andrew Davis, Pinchas Zukerman, and Yannick Nézet-Séguin. His has shared the stage with such diverse artists as Branford Marsalis, Peggy Baker and Madeleine Peyroux. In 1997, Burashko formed the Art of Time Ensemble to produce unique concerts that ignore the barriers between genres and disciplines, with the aim of exposing audiences to a broad range of artistic possibilities. Under Burashko’s direction, Art of Time Ensemble has become a Canadian destination for today’s most accomplished artists working in music, dance, theatre, film, and literature. In addition to their annual concert series in Toronto, Art of Time Ensemble has toured extensively throughout Canada and the Unites States, as well as in Russia and Finland.
justin abedin Justin Abedin is a Juno award winning musician, multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer and musical director, most notably as guitarist for Jacksoul. He has performed or recorded with Buffy SainteMarie, Amanda Marshall, Justin Hines, Sarah Slean, Emilie-Claire Barlow, Marc Jordan, Dean Brody, The Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Matt Dusk, Michael Kaeshammer, Lindi Ortega and Autorickshaw. Justin has made several television appearances, including in the Canadian Idol house band on CTV.
andy ball ant yne Canadian saxophonist, composer, and arranger Andy Ballantyne is a graduate of Humber College and the University of Toronto jazz performance program. A regular member of several prominent Canadian jazz groups, he has also performed
with some of the world’s foremost jazz artists including Rob McConnell’s Boss Brass, Dave Holland, and Maria Schneider. He leads his own 11-piece Andy Ballantyne Large Ensemble, which released their debut recording The Sum of Parts in 2007. Andy is currently on the faculty at Humber College.
vern dorge Woodwind specialist Vern Dorge is a fixture on the Canadian and international music scene, featured in many live concerts, television appearances, and recordings. Born in Alberta, Dorge settled in Toronto in 1974, and has performed with the likes of Blood, Sweat and Tears, Gordon Lightfoot, Anne Murray, Tony Bennett, Aretha Franklin, Ella Fitzgerald, Roberta Flack, Aaron Neville, Diana Krall, Herbie Hancock and many others. He continues to be active as a performer, composer/ arranger, teacher, and studio musician.
andrew downing Andrew Downing is a double bass player, composer and bandleader. Andrew graduated from the University of Toronto’s Jazz Performance program. He has studied with Jack Winn, Dave Young, Don Thompson, Shauna Rolston and Joel Quarrington. Andrew plays primarily in the creative jazz scene in Canada, but also performs in other genres, and is a member of the David Occhipinti Quartet and the Lina Allemano Four.
nick fr aser Nick Fraser has been part of Toronto’s new jazz and improvised music community for over 20 years. He has performed with many of Canada’s top jazz and improvised music artists, and with international artists including Tony Malaby, Kris Davis, William Parker, Roscoe Mitchell, Marilyn Crispell, and Anthony Braxton. A JUNO award winner, he was also awarded a 2017 Chalmers Arts Fellowship. In addition to his own projects, he is a member of Peripheral Vision, Eucalyptus, Titanium Riot, Ugly Beauties, and the Lina Allemano Four.
performers john johnson Juno Award winner John Johnson is proficient on all the saxophones from sopranino through baritone, as well as piccolo, flute, alto flute, clarinet, and bass clarinet. John can often be seen playing with Soul Stew, The Montuno Police, The Barlow Group, Vector, The Boss Brass, and Manteca. He has performed with Molly Johnson, Holly Cole, Diane Krall, Aretha Franklin, Roberta Flack, Dionne Warwick, Bill Mays, and has appeared as a guest artist with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.
drew jureck a Drew Jurecka is a crossover jazz and classical violinist who has played and recorded with artists in many genres, from Dave Brubeck to Ron Sexsmith. For five years Drew played with Jeff Healey as part of his Jazz Wizards band. Drew can be heard on three of Jeff Healey’s CDs, and movie and radio soundtracks including Franklin, Republic of Doyle, Make the Politician Work, Gunless, Degrassi, and Little Mosque on the Prairie.
amy l aing Amy plays regularly with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and has played with the Canadian Opera Company, the Windsor Symphony, Niagara Symphony, Thunder Bay Symphony, and also held a position with Symphony Nova Scotia in Halifax. Amy is an active chamber musician, and was a member of the Madawaska String Quartet. She has performed or recorded with leading Canadian artists including Jesse Cook, The Barenaked Ladies, Jim Cuddy, Steven Page, Sarah Slean, Molly Johnson, Jim Guthrie, Amy Sky, and many more.
l arry l arson Larry Larson has been Principal Trumpet of the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony since 1993. As a soloist, Larry has premiered the Trumpet Concertos of John Estacio and Scott Good. In 2010, he released his first solo CD, Divertissement. He has had the
great pleasure to work in back-up orchestras for Herbie Hancock, Diana Krall, Brian Wilson, Jann Arden, and many others. Larry has been the trumpet and brass ensemble coach of the National Youth Orchestra of Canada since 2007.
john macleod John MacLeod has enjoyed a 40-year career in the Canadian music scene. He performed as a soloist with Rob McConnell and the Boss Brass and has composed or arranged music for everything from string quartets up to full symphonic orchestra, including big band arrangements for the repertoire of many international groups. He has also completed several orchestral projects which he has conducted at Roy Thompson Hall and the famous Carnegie Hall in New York City. He leads the 20-piece jazz big band The Rex Hotel Orchestra, which performs monthly at the Rex in Toronto.
steve mcdade Steve McDade took up the trumpet at the age of 12 and entered the Humber College Jazz Studies program at just 16. McDade has been a member of Manteca and The Boss Brass since the 1980s, touring the world with both bands and playing on their Grammy and JUNO Award-winning recordings. He has performed with some of the biggest names in music, including Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Doc Severinsen, Diana Krall, Mel Torme, Ella Fitzgerald, The Toronto Symphony, and Manhattan Transfer.
jessica mitchell Jessica Mitchell is a singer/songwriter, and spends her time between Nashville and Toronto. She was the recipient of the 2016 COCA award for Singer-Songwriter of the Year award and was nominated for Roots Artist of the Year. Her EP Hold on to the Light was released in 2016.
performers mike murley Mike Murley is one of Canada’s finest jazz talents and one of the most versatile players on the scene today. He has played on eleven Juno Award-winning recordings since 1991. Murley has recorded with veteran Canadian artists such as Ed Bickert, Guido Basso, and Rob McConnell. Murley is a full-time lecturer at the University of Toronto Faculty of Music and has also taught at York University, Humber College, and the Banff Centre for the Arts.
christian overton Christian Overton is one of the most in demand low brass players in Toronto, from clubs to theatres and TV commercials in all genres. He has played with Glass Tiger, Jully Black, Sloan, Bedouin Soundclash, Jane Bunnett, and Don Thompson. He holds a Bachelors Degree from Humber College and a Masters Degree from the University of Toronto.
dougl as perry Violist Douglas Perry has held senior artistic positions in many Ontario organizations, including Artistic Administrator for the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony and Artistic Director of Arraymusic. He was a founding member of Tafelmusik, and performed with them for over a decade. He has been Principal Viola of the Santa Fe Opera, the Kitchener Waterloo Symphony and the Canadian Opera Company and has numerous recordings on various labels, including J.S. Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto #6 with the CBC Vancouver Orchestra.
jackie richardson Jackie Richardson is one of Canada’s foremost singers of gospel, blues and jazz whose career includes performances in radio, recordings, commercials, theatre, film, TV and live concerts both at home in Canada and abroad. Jackie has received NAACP, Juno, Betty, Dora, Jessie, Gemini, TBS Lifetime Achievement and Canadian Black Lifetime Achievement Awards and
Nominations. In September 2014, the CD Just Passing Through: The Breithaupt Brothers Songbook was released with Jackie singing the title song. Jackie toured the Northwest Territories with Joe Sealy’s Africville Stories and returned with her daughter, Kim Richardson, to perform their show Mother and Daughter Reunion.
stephen sitarski Stephen Sitarski is Concertmaster of the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra and held the same position with the Esprit Orchestra and the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony (KWS). Sitarski became Artistic Director of the KWS Baroque and Beyond. Stephen is a founding member of Trio Laurier, and is also on the faculty of Wilfrid Laurier University, Toronto’s Glenn Gould School of the Royal Conservatory of Music.
rob somerville Rob Somerville has been performing for over 30 years, backing many major artists such as Natalie Cole, Paul Anka, The Temptations, The Nylons, The Four Tops, Frank Sinatra Jr. and Matt Dusk. Rob has played with such notables as Peter Appleyard, Pat LaBarbara, Kenny Wheeler, Gap Mangione, Tom Scott, Robben Ford and Larry Carlton to name a few. Currently Rob is a member of The Juno Award winning John MacLeod Jazz Orchestra, and The Writers Jazz Orchestra.
christopher stanton Christopher is a performer, director, writer, sound designer, and composer. His stage work has taken him across Canada to Toronto, Edmonton, Ottawa, Winnipeg, Vancouver, Montreal, and internationally to New York, Bogotà, Munich, Brisbane, Dublin, and Vienna. He has been nominated for 13 Dora Mavor Moore Awards across disciplines, winning twice (for direction in 2017, and for performance in 2011). Stanton is also the Artistic Producer of Toronto-based indie performance company ARC.

Tom Szczesniak has performed on the scores of over 100 feature films, numerous television shows and over 1,000 commercials. As a composer and arranger, Tom written for a variety of cinematic, televised, commercial and theatrical productions, and has been an integral part of several highly regarded music production houses. In 1993, Tom formed ParkerSzczmith Music Inc, through which he composes, conducts, performs, and arranges. Tom has been honoured to be a multiple recipient of the Socan Award for Film and Television Music and the Emmy Award for Beetlejuice in 1991.
David Wall is a composer, lyricist, singer and vocal coach. As lead vocalist of the Bourbon Tabernacle Choir he toured Canada extensively, appearing regularly on television and radio. As a composer, he has worked with directors such as Simcha Jacobovici, Avi Lewis, Michael Maclear and John Greyson. Recently he has contributed original Yiddish songs and settings of modern Yiddish poetry to his Jewish music projects, including collaborative work with pianist Marilyn Lerner.
liam russell Liam Russell is a Canadian musician and actor who released his first self-titled album in 2005 at age 16, and the following year he received a nomination for Best New Solo Artist at the Canadian Radio Music Awards. Liam has toured alongside artists such as Great Big Sea, Tom Cochrane, David Usher & Colin James. During 2010, Liam divided his time between London and Nashville, composing songs for his album 2012 Cicada.
kevin turcot te Kevin Turcotte has been regarded as one of Canada’s most proficient performers for nearly two decades. He studied music at the prestigious Banff School of Fine Arts and later, at the University of Toronto, where he joined the faculty in the 1990s. He has performed on over 75 recordings and in countless club and concert appearances. He has toured extensively throughout North America and internationally with the Dave McMurdo Jazz Orchestra and Time Warp, with Don Byron.
perry white Perry White’s career as a saxophonist has spanned over two decades. He has performed and recorded with a who’s who of the Canadian jazz and modern music scene as well as a diverse cross-section of international artists including: Hilario Duran, Dave Young, Kevin Briet, The Shuffle Demons, Bill Mays, Phil Dwyer, Holy Cole, Aretha Franklin, Michael Buble, Raise the Roof, The Boss Brass, Reg Schwager, Planet Earth, Steve Wallace, Rob Armus, among many others.
tom wil son Tom Wilson came to prominence in the ‘90s as the leader of the much-loved Junkhouse, and later found a whole new audience with roots-rock super-group Blackie and the Rodeo Kings, who have enjoyed recent success with their album KINGS and QUEENS, a collaboration with some of the finest female artists in the field of Americana and Roots Music. Wilson released solo albums in 2001 and 2006, and his 2005 collaboration with Bob Lanois, The Shack Recordings, was critically acclaimed. As the vocalist and guitarist for LeE HARVeY OsMOND, he released A Quiet Evil, The Folk Singer and Beautiful Scars.

Robert Carli leads a diverse career as a performer and composer for film and television. He performs as saxophonist regularly with several ensembles, including the Toronto Symphony and the National Ballet of Canada Orchestra. His music has received numerous awards and nominations, including 5 Gemini Awards and 2 Canadian Screen Awards. In addition to and eclectic mix of Canadian films and TV shows, he has composed music for over 100 episodes of Murdoch Mysteries.
Jonathan Goldsmith is a gifted musician and producer, and one of the country’s most sought-after film & television composers. Some of his credits include scoring Sarah Polley’s feature films Away From Her and Take This Waltz, and producing albums for Bruce Cockburn, Jane Siberry, Hugh Marsh, and Martin Tielli. Jonathan is a founding member of the Art of Time Ensemble.

Jim McGrath is a Toronto-based composer who divides his time between writing music for film and television and composing for the concert stage. His compositions have been performed by Ottawa’s Thirteen Strings, The Montreal Chamber Orchestra, The Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony, and the Hamilton Philharmonic. Jim scored the CBC hit comedy/drama Republic of Doyle, as well as the critically acclaimed series Degrassi, for which he won a Gemini Award.
Aaron Davis is an eclectic composer, arranger, and keyboardist, best known as a founding member of the groups The Holly Cole Trio and Manteca, and as a Geminiaward winning composer of music for film. Some of his arranging credits include Alison Krauss, Canadian Brass, Natalie McMaster, and the Art of Time Ensemble. He has recently worked with classical vocal superstar Measha Brueggergosman on her album of jazz and pop standards, I’ve Got a Crush on You, and a cross-Canada promotional tour.
kevin fox Kevin Fox has worked with a variety of artists from Sarah Harmer to Tom Cochrane to Celine Dion. Kevin recently toured with Chantal Kreviazuk and Raine Maida, and has composed music for film and arrangements for artists such as Damhnait Doyle, Lennie Gallant, and The Cranberries. In June 2004, Kevin released his debut album Come Alive. In 2008 he released his second album, Songs for Cello & Voice, which earned much critical praise.

rick wilkins Rick Wilkins is a composer, conductor, and saxophonist. He has worked for the CBC and CTV arranging, rehearsing, and conducting music for television and radio programs. He has arranged music for television specials featuring Julie Amato, Tommy Ambrose, Guido Basso, the Canadian Brass, Burton Cummings, Anne Murray, among others. In 2002, he was made a Member of the Order of Canada.
