Canadian saxophonist, composer, and arranger Andy Ballantyne is a graduate of Humber College and the University of Toronto jazz performance program. A regular member of several prominent Canadian jazz groups, including the Juno award winning Rex Hotel Orchestra, he has also performed with some of the world’s foremost jazz artists including Rob McConnell’s Boss Brass, Dave Holland and Maria Schneider. He leads his own 11-piece Andy Ballantyne Large Ensemble, which released their debut recording The Sum of Parts in 2007. Andy is currently on the faculty at Humber College in Toronto teaching woodwinds, composition, arranging and jazz pedagogy.
Saxophone, flute, and woodwind specialist Vern Dorge is a fixture on the Canadian and international music scene, featured in many live concerts, television appearances, and recordings in a variety of genres. Born in Alberta, Dorge settled in Toronto in 1974, one has performed with the likes of Blood, Sweat and Tears, Gordon Lightfoot, Anne Murray, Tony Bennett, Aretha Franklin, Ella Fitzgerald, Roberta Flack, Aaron Neville, Diana Krall, Herbie Hancock and many others. He continues to be active as a performer, composer/arranger, teacher, and studio musician. He is currently leading a sextet playing jazz, blues, soul, latin and groove, and has released a solo recording titled Soul Searchin’.

As a soloist, Andrew made his debut with the Toronto Symphony at the age of seventeen and went on to perform with countless orchestras under the batons of Sir Andrew Davis, Yannick Nezet-Seguin, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, and Pinchas Zukerman to name a few. He has performed throughout Canada, the United States, and Europe as both soloist and chamber musician and for over twenty years Andrew had an ongoing collaboration with modern dancer Peggy Baker. In 1998, Andrew founded the Art of Time Ensemble, which is committed to reaching across borders that separate artistic genres and audiences. Andrew has recorded for CBC SM5000, Naxos, Centerdisc and Opening Day labels, and is a faculty member at the Glenn Gould School.
Andrew Downing is a double bass player, composer and bandleader living in Toronto. Andrew graduated from the University of Toronto’s Jazz Performance program. He has since then studied with Jack Winn, Dave Young, Don Thompson, Shauna Rolston and Joel Quarrington. Andrew plays primarily in the creative jazz scene in Canada, but also performs in various genres. He has played with a diverse range of musicians. He is also a member of the David Occhipinti Quartet and the Lina Allemano Four. Andrew also leads his own groups The Great Uncles of the Revolution and Melodeon. He received a Juno Award, a West Coast Music Award and The Grand Prix de Jazz for work with The Great Uncles. As a composer, he has written pieces for Ensemble Meduse, Toca Loca, Runcible Spoon and the Urban Arts Brass Ensemble as well as many works for his own groups.

Juno Award winner John Johnson is one of the most in-demand musicians in Toronto. A highly-respected session player, John is proficient on all the saxophones from sopranino through baritone, as well as piccolo, flute, alto flute, clarinet, and bass clarinet. In the clubs, John can often be seen playing with bands such as Soul Stew, The Montuno Police, The Barlow Group, Michael Pickett, Cimmaron, Vector, The Boss Brass, and Manteca. He has performed with Molly Johnson, Holly Cole, Diane Krall, Aretha Franklin, Roberta Flack, Dionne Warwick, Peabo Bryson, Cal Dodd, Dianne Reeves, Bill Mays, the Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band, and has appeared as a guest artist with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra on numerous occasions.
Alastair Kay is a consummate trombone soloist who currently leads the trombone section of Rob McConnell’s Grammy Awardwinning jazz ensemble The Boss Brass. He has worked with leading symphony orchestras as well as entertainers such as Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald. One of the busiest musicians on the planet, Al also finds time to chair the brass department at Toronto’s Humber College. Al is the International Development Artist for Yamaha’s Lead Trombone, the YSL697Z, and the Al Kay Signature mouthpiece.
drew jureck a Drew Jurecka is a crossover jazz and classical violinist. He completed his Bachelor’s of Violin Performance at the esteemed Cleveland Institute of Music in Ohio. An in-demand soloist, session player and sideman, Drew has played and recorded with a broad spectrum of artists in many genres, from Dave Brubeck to Ron Sexsmith. For five years Drew played with Jeff Healey as part of his Jazz Wizards band. Drew can be heard on three of Jeff Healey’s CDs, including the Juno Nominated Last Call and movie and radio soundtracks including Franklin, Republic of Doyle, Make the Politician Work, Gunless, Degrassi, The Age of Persuasion, Flashpoint, Combat Hospital and Little Mosque on the Prairie. Drew currently teaches violin at Humber College, where he has helped to create the only specialized jazz strings post-secondary program in Canada.
alex kundakcioglu Alex has been a busy freelance trumpet player in Toronto for the last 25 years. He began studied at Humber College in Toronto in the early 1980’s. Since leaving college Alex has played with numerous bands and orchestras in Toronto and Vancouver. Alex currently performs and has recorded with Matt Dusk, The Hilario Duran Latin Big Band, The Art of Time Ensemble, and Kirk Macdonald’s Big Band and went to Russia with David Clayton Thomas & Blood, Sweat & Tears. Alex has also performed with Natalie Cole, Aretha Franklin, Wayne Newton, Donna Summer, and The Temptations.

John MacLeod’s credentials as a trumpeter/ composer/arranger have been firmly established in a distinguished career spanning over 30 years. He has worked with Toronto’s most elite musicians and musical organizations in both the jazz and commercial music fields. He has also had an active career in the recording studios, theatrical orchestra pits and as a backup musician for dozens of internationally celebrated name acts. As a jazz artist, he’s had the opportunity to perform with many of the music’s legends. He has worked with literally every major figure on the Toronto scene and was a featured soloist with one of the world’s most renowned big bands, Rob McConnell & the Boss Brass. He has performed and acted as a producer/engineer on well over 50 albums and CD recordings including Grammy and Juno award winners.
Country-singer/songwriter Jessica Mitchell is a storyteller – an open book. Based in Toronto, she has spent the last decade digging deeper into her artistry, focusing on writing new music and crafting her richly unique sound, which has led her to become country music’s best kept secret. After signing with Slaight Music Publishing, Mitchell embarked on several writing trips to Nashville where she found herself inspired by the raw honesty and storytelling nature of the country music genre.
r achel mercer Described as a “pure chamber musician” (Globe and Mail) creating “moments of pure magic” (Toronto Star), Canadian cellist Rachel Mercer has appeared as a soloist and chamber musician across five continents. Member of Ensemble Made In Canada, the Mercer-Park Duo, Artist-in-Residence at Western University, and Artistic Director of the “5 at the First” Chamber Music Series in Hamilton, Rachel joins the National Arts Centre Orchestra as Associate Principal Cello in January 2016. Her critically acclaimed album of the Bach Suites was recorded on the 1696 Bonjour Stradivarius from the Canada Council Instrument Bank. Winner in the 2015 competition, Rachel is grateful to have been awarded the 1730 Newland Joannes Franciscus Celoniatus cello for a 3-year loan.
mike murley An engaging, lyrical saxophonist, Mike Murley is one of Canada’s finest jazz talents and one of the most versatile players on the scene today. He has played on eleven Juno Award-winning recordings since 1991, the latest in 2013 for his trio recording Test of Time. Murley has recorded with veteran Canadian artists such as Ed Bickert, Guido Basso, and Rob McConnell. In contemporary music, Murley has collaborated with improvisers and composers, including pianist David Braid and guitarist David Occhipinti. He is also known for his work with Metalwood. In August 2011 Murley accepted a fulltime lecturer position at the University of Toronto Faculty of Music. He has also taught at the York University, Humber College, and has been a visiting member of faculty at the Banff Centre for the Arts.

Brian O’Kane has been a member of bands led by Rob McConnell, Hilario Duran, Ron Collier and John MacLeod, in addition to working with such artists as Maria Schneider, Vince Mendoza, Kenny Wheeler, Aretha Franklin, and Kristin Chenoweth. Brian has performed with the National Arts Centre Orchestra, the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra London and the True North Brass, and also played in such shows as The Producers, West Side Story, and Chicago. A faculty member at Humber College, Brian holds a Masters Degree from the University of Toronto.
Formerly Artistic Administrator for the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony, Douglas was Artistic Director of ArrayMusic as well as a founding member of Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra with whom he performed and recorded for over 10 years. He has been Principal Viola of the Santa Fe Opera, the Kitchener Waterloo Symphony and the Canadian Opera Company and has numerous recordings on various labels, including J.S. Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto #6 with the CBC. Vancouver Orchestra. He produced a jazz CD with Juno Award winners Dave Young, Phil Dwyer and Michel Lambert and his recording of Harry Somers’ String Quartets with ACCORDES was nominated for a Juno Award. He has served on the Board of Directors of Harbourfront Centre and the Toronto Arts Council, is a Past President of the Recording Musicians’ Association Canada.
christian overton Christian Overton is one of the most in demand low brass players in Toronto, from clubs to theatres and TV commercials in all genres. He has played with Glass Tiger, Jully Black, Sloan, Bedouin Soundclash, Jane Bunnett, and Don Thompson. He holds a Bachelors Degree from Humber College and a Masters Degree from the University of Toronto.
rob piltch Rob Piltch has worked with The Bernie Piltch Quartet, The Ted Moses Quintet and Blood, Sweat & Tears. He has worked as a session player with Kim Mitchell, Shirley Eikhardt, Guido Basso, and Rob McConnell, and has recorded two albums: Bells and Rob Piltch. Rob has also performed and recorded with Colm Wilkinson, Molly Johnson, Emilie-Claire Barlow, Louise Pitre, Steven Page, Sarah Slean, Sophie Milman, and The Art of Time Ensemble. His CD Chambers is available on iTunes and on CD Baby.

Terry Promane is an Associate Professor and Jazz Coordinator at the University of Toronto. A trombone, bass trombone and tuba player, Terry maintains a very active performing career as a member of Toronto’s most prestigious jazz groups, including the Dave Young/Terry Promane Octet, the Mike Murley Septet, the John MacLeod Big Band, the Kirk MacDonald Jazz Orchestra, and the Carn/Davidson 9. Many of these groups feature Terry’s original compositions and arrangements.
Jackie Richardson is an award winning actress and one of Canada’s foremost singers of gospel, blues and jazz whose career includes performances in radio, recordings, commercials, theatre, film, TV and live concerts. She has travelled across Canada performing in all the major cities and forces bases as well as countries around the world such as Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Thailand, The West Indies, Lebanon, France, South Pacific Islands and The USA. Jackie has also received NAACP, Juno, Betty, Dora, Jessie, Gemini, TBS Lifetime Achievement and Canadian Black Lifetime Achievement Awards and Nominations. Recently Jackie was honoured to be chosen by the Toronto Star newspaper, in their Commemoration of Toronto’s 180th Birthday, as one of the 180 people they considered to have in someway helped to shape the city. She recorded a duet “New York Stories” with Micah Barnes (The Nylons) and sang Weeping on Bruce Cassidy’s (Blood Sweat & Tears) solo CD. September 2014, the CD Just Passing Through: The Breithaupt Brothers Songbook was released with Jackie singing the title song. She hosted the award nominated Jazz FM Radio Series “Identities - Musicians Who Chose Canada” (she is currently recording the second season). Jackie also received a Critics award for her portrayal of Big Mama Thornton at The Festival in Ottawa/Gatineau 2013). February 2014 found Jackie touring The North West Territories with Joe Sealy’s Africville Stories and this year she returns to The North Land with her daughter, Kim Richardson to perform their show Mother and Daughter Reunion. She is also excited about being artist in residence at SoulPepper and performing in all of the 2015 concerts.
davide di renzo Davide di Renzo is an alumnus of the University of Toronto’s Jazz Studies program. He was the house drummer for the hugely successful Canadian Idol television talent competition, and has worked with many of the country’s top performers and recording artists including Jacksoul, Holly Cole, Ashley McIsaac, Melissa Stylianou, Dione Taylor, Heather Bambrick, Eliana Cuevas, Richard Underhill, Bill King’s Saturday Night Fish Fry, Sarah Slean, Carol Welsman, and Alanis Morisette, to list a few. Davide di Renzo was a member of the Peter Smith Quartet when they were featured during the Sound of Toronto Jazz Concert Series at the Ontario Science Centre.

Stephen Sitarski is Concertmaster of the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra and held the same position with the Esprit Orchestra and the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony (KWS). Sitarski became Artistic Director of the KWS Baroque and Beyond. Stephen frequently appears as soloist with many concertos in the standard repertoire as well as concertos written especially for him by Canadian composers. Stephen is a founding member of Trio Laurier, and is a regular participant in diverse chamber groups and festival events nationally and internationally with many of Canada’s finest musicians. As an arranger, Stephen has arranged music for the Emperor Quartet, Quartetto Gelato and the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony. Stephen is also on the faculty of Wilfrid Laurier University, Toronto’s Glenn Gould School of the Royal Conservatory of Music.
Liam Titcomb is a Canadian musician and actor who released his first self-titled album in 2005 at age 16, and the following year he received a nomination for Best New Solo Artist at the Canadian Radio Music Awards. An actor as well as a musician, Liam played the character Will in Strange Days at Blake Holsey High, and also starred as Jones in the CBC Television drama Wild Roses. Liam has toured alongside artists such as Great Big Sea, Tom Cochrane, David Usher & Colin James. During 2010, Liam divided his time between London and Nashville, composing songs for his latest album Cicada, which was released on Nettwerk Records in October 2012.
tom szczesniak Tom Szczesniak has performed as a musician on the scores of over 100 feature films, numerous television shows and over 1,000 commercials. As a player, he has also been much in demand by some of the finest international performing artists, as well as performances for former U.S. Presidents Richard M. Nixon and Lyndon B. Johnson. As a composer and arranger, Tom has used his writing skills to enhance a wide variety of cinematic, televised, commercial and theatrical productions, and has been an integral part of several highly regarded music production houses. In 1993, Tom formed a company – ParkerSzczmith Music Inc - and since that time, has been composing, conducting, playing and arranging under the auspices of this successful and award-winning company. Tom has been honoured to be a multiple recipient of the Socan Award for Film and Television Music and the Emmy Award for Beetlejuice 1991.
kevin turcot te Kevin Michael Turcotte is universally recognized as one of Canada’s major trumpet talents with an impressive list of recording and touring credentials as a prominent player with the elite of many Canadian jazz ensembles. Kevin Turcotte has been regarded as one of Canada’s most proficient performers for nearly two decades. He studied music at the prestigious Banff School of Fine Arts and later, at the University of Toronto, where he joined the faculty in the 1990s. He has performed on over 75 recordings and in countless club and concert appearances. He has toured extensively throughout North America as well as with the Dave McMurdo Jazz Orchestra on the band’s 1991 Russian tour, in South America with Time Warp, with Don Byron in Italy. Kevin Turcotte is also a dedicated jazz educator, with lengthy teaching tenure at the University of Toronto and as a longtime adjudicator for MusicFest Canada.

David Wall is a composer, lyricist, singer and vocal coach. As lead vocalist of the Bourbon Tabernacle Choir he toured Canada extensively, appearing regularly on television and radio. He has performed and recorded with an impressive cross-section of artists. Since 2001 David has developed a busy career as a composer. He has worked with directors such as Simcha Jacobovici, Avi Lewis, Michael Maclear and John Greyson and has written many scores for film and television. He has written a large repertoire of songs in an assortment of genres from pop and rock to gospel, blues and jazz. Recently he has contributed original Yiddish songs and settings of modern Yiddish poetry to his Jewish music projects, including collaborative work with acclaimed jazz pianist Marilyn Lerner. David has also worked on many experimental and multi-media musical projects in collaboration with designer Bruce Mau and with filmmaker John Greyson.
Tom Wilson struck Canadian rock gold in the ‘90s as the leader of the much-loved Junkhouse, and later found a whole new audience as a crucial component of rootsrock super-group Blackie and the Rodeo Kings, who have enjoyed recent success with their album KINGS and QUEENS, a collaboration with some of the finest female artists in the field of Americana and Roots Music. Wilson released solo albums in 2001 and 2006, and his 2005 collaboration with Bob Lanois, The Shack Recordings, was critically acclaimed. As the vocalist and guitarist for LeE HARVeY OsMOND, he released A Quiet Evil, The Folk Singer and Beautiful Scars.
perry white Perry White’s expressive tone and lyrical approach to playing the saxophone has kept him busy performing in Canada and around the world for over two decades. He has performed and recorded with a who’s who of the Canadian jazz and modern music scene as well as a diverse crosssection of international artists including: Hilario Duran, Dave Young, Kevin Briet, The Shuffle Demons, Bill Mays, Mouse on Mars, Hugh Fraser, Phil Dwyer, Holy Cole, Michael White, John Alcorn, John MacLeod, Dave Mcmurdo, Mr. Something Something, Aretha Franklin, Michael Buble, Raise the Roof, The Boss Brass, Reg Schwager, Planet Earth, Steve Wallace, Rob Armus, among many others.

Bryden Baird is a trumpet player, composer, and arranger, and is currently acting as Musical Director for Steven Page (formerly of the Barenaked Ladies), having recently wrapped up a 3 year world tour with Feist. When not on the road, Baird maintains an active studio career in Toronto. Some recent projects he’s composed for include the film Gunless (with Greg Keelor of Blue Rodeo), Chantal Kreviazuk’s symphony tour and the Art of Time Ensemble.
With his ability to play numerous musical instruments, Kevin Fox has worked with a variety of artists from Sarah Harmer to Tom Cochrane to Celine Dion. Kevin recently toured with Chantal Kreviazuk and Raine Maida. As a composer/arranger, Kevin has composed music for film and arrangements for artists such as Damhnait Doyle, Lennie Gallant, Shaye and Dolories O’Riordan of The Cranberries. In June 2004, Kevin released his debut album Come Alive. In 2008 he released his second album, Songs for Cello & Voice, which earned him much critical praise.
shelly berger Shelly Berger is an arranger, composer and producer in both jazz and contemporary music settings. He worked as a bassist and arranger in Los Angeles for nine years, recording and performing with artists including Diana Krall, the Louis Bellson Big Band, and the Louis Bellson Quartet, while occyuping the Musical Director’s chair with Anita O’Day. Berger worked as an arranger-producer for Sharon, Lois and Bram, Quartetto Gelatto, and Matt Dusk, and produced, arranged and recorded with numerous pop acts. In the broadcast field he served as arranger/producer for many TV series. To date, Shelly has released four CDs: Solana, The Shelly Berger Big Band, Shelly Berger, and Look Up. a aron davis Aaron Davis is an eclectic composer, arranger, and keyboardist, best known as a founding member of the groups The Holly Cole Trio and Manteca, and as a Gemini-award winning composer of music for film. Some of his arranging credits include Alison Krauss, Canadian Brass, Natalie McMaster, and the Art of Time Ensemble. He has recently worked with classical vocal superstar Measha Brueggergosman on her album of jazz and pop standards, I’ve Got a Crush on You (Kelp Records), and a cross-Canada promotional tour.
jonathan goldsmith Jonathan Goldsmith is a gifted musician and producer, and one of the country’s most sought-after film & television composers. He has won three Gemini Awards, among many other accolades. Some of his credits include scoring Sarah Polley’s feature films Away From Her and Take This Waltz, and producing albums for Bruce Cockburn, Jane Siberry, Hugh Marsh, and Martin Tielli. Jonathan is a founding member of the Art of Time Ensemble and has been involved in numerous projects with the organization as a performer, arranger and composer.
arrangers mark kieswet ter Versatile pianist Mark Kieswetter has performed alongside jazz greats including Zoot Sims, Jack Sheldon and James Moody. For over three years, he was the musical director for the legendary Jon Hendricks, working with him in developing the large vocal ensemble “Vocalstraâ”, and performing at such venues as the International Association of Jazz Educators in New York and the Sorbonne in Paris. Mark has played in the orchestra for many professional touring companies, has performed on many recordings, including Juno nominated The Beat Goes On (Emilie-Claire Barlow ) and Bread and Buddha (Harry Manx), and also acted as MD on several recently released albums, including Stealing Genius (Amy McConnell & William Sperandei) I Could Laugh Out Loud (Ilana Waldston) and Everybody’s Here (Whitney Ross-Barris). Mark also released a duo CD Green Edge Sky, Green Edge Sun with Toronto bassist Ross MacIntyre in 2011 and they will be releasing a new recording in 2013. steve mackinnon Steve MacKinnon graduation in Composition from the University of Toronto before going on to write and produce many award winning recordings, including Marc Jordan’s Reckless Valentine (for which he shared the Juno Award for Producer of the Year), Serena Ryder’s If Your Memory Serves You Well, and recordings by Molly Johnson, Sophie Milman, Natalie Cole, Olivia Newton John, RyanDan, The Rankins and more.
jim mcgr ath Jim McGrath is a Toronto-based composer who divides his time between writing music for film and television and composing for the concert stage. Jim scored the CBC hit comedy/drama Republic of Doylex, as well as the critically acclaimed series Degrassi, for which he won the Gemini Award for Best Original Score for a Dramatic Series. dan parr Dan Parr is a frequent contributor to Art of Time Ensemble concerts, Previous efforts include arranging and composing credits in Herrmannthology and War of the Worlds (2011 & 2012), Songbook 6: Steven Page (2011), and Cantabile: An Evening of Italian Music (2012). More recently, he composed music for Margaret Atwood’s Thriller Suite, presented in The Poem/The Song (2014). cameron wil son Cameron Wilson is a composer, arranger, violinist, and a member of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. He is currently a member of Van Django, Joe Trio, the Hard Rubber Orchestra and Mariachi del Sol. His works have been performed by numerous symphony orchestras and ensembles and soloists across Canada and the U.S. (including the Art of Time Ensemble). He has collaborated with CBC author and storyteller Stuart Mclean on the History of Canada and has composed several film scores including the NFBs Citizen Sam. Most recently he co wrote a film noir operetta with librettist Kico Gonzalez Risso called Supernatural Noir.
