performers benjamin barrile Benjamin Barrile is an accomplished flamenco guitarist who also has extensive experience in jazz, classical and world music. In addition to leading his own group, Benjamin has performed and recorded for many artists including The Café Olé, a multi-award winning group that incorporates a unique mix of flamenco and jazz. Benjamin is also a resident guitarist at Toronto based Carmen Romero’s School of Flamenco Dance Arts and Esmeralda Enrique Spanish Dance Company. Benjamin has appeared on numerous television and radio broadcasts including CBC, City TV, Jazz FM, and Telelatino. In 2000 Benjamin set off to Spain for the first of many times, a country that had long captivated his imagination, in search of flamenco and what would be the most significant journey of his life so far. He traveled to one of the major centres of flamenco in Spain today, Jerez de la Frontera, where he studied under many great maestros including Manuel Lozano “El Carbonero”. yehonatan berick Prizewinner at the 1993 Naumburg competition and a recipient of the 1996-97 Prix Opus, Yehonatan Berick has been featured as soloist with Quebec, Winnipeg, Windsor, Ann Arbor, Jerusalem and Haifa Symphonies, and the Israeli, Cincinnati, Montreal and Manitoba Chamber Orchestras, Thirteen Strings and Ensemble Appassionata. His recital offerings include the complete Paganini Caprices, and the complete Solo Sonatas and Partitas by Bach. Berick’s festival and chamber series include Marlboro, Ravinia, Seattle, Ottawa, Great Lakes, and Music@Menlo.

carolyn bl ack well Originally from Calgary, Alberta, Carolyn Blackwell has shared the stage with Martin Beaver, Alicia Weilerstein, Renaud Capuçon, Daniel Phillips and Mayumi Seiler. She performs with the Art of Time Ensemble and the Artists of The Royal Conservatory (ARC) where she is featured on the group’s recording Two Roads to Exile from the RCA Sony Red Label. Carolyn performs regularly with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and as Acting Assistant Principal Viola of the National Ballet of Canada and the Canadian Opera Company (COC). Ms. Blackwell has performed as acting violist of The Aviv Quartet, collaborated with the Vienna Piano Trio and was recently appointed violist of the Tokai String Quartet. She can be heard on CBC and BBC Radio. Carolyn also performs regularly in Switzerland as a member of the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra. Upcoming projects include Cervo Chamber Music, a North American tour with the Art of Time Ensemble and Open Chamber Music at the IMS Prussia Cove, UK. Carolyn completed her studies with Steven Dann and Nick Pulos. Carolyn resides in Toronto with her husband David. andrew bur ashko As a soloist, Andrew made his debut with the Toronto Symphony at the age of seventeen and went on to perform with countless orchestras under the batons of Sir Andrew Davis, Yannick Nezet-Seguin, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, and Pinchas Zukerman to name a few. He has performed throughout Canada, the United States, and Europe as both soloist and chamber musician and for over twenty years Andrew had an ongoing collaboration with modern dancer Peggy Baker. In 1998, Andrew founded the Art of Time Ensemble, which is committed to reaching across borders that separate artistic genres and audiences. Andrew has recorded for CBC SM5000, Naxos, Centerdisc and Opening Day labels, and is a faculty member at the Glenn Gould School.

Esmeralda Enrique, one of the most celebrated Flamenco dance artists in Canada has received many awards for her accomplishments from the Hispanic community as well as numerous Dora Mavor Moore Award nominations. Upon immigrating to Canada in 1982 she established the Academy of Spanish Dance and her eponymous dance company. Her infinite creativity, energy, passion and spirit over the last thirty-four years have helped make flamenco a vibrant, driving force on the Canadian dance landscape.

Since graduating from Humber College’s renowned music program, Derek Gray has travelled the world studying, performing and teaching - including time spent in Ghana, Cuba, Italy, Switzerland, Banff, and Washington. At home in Toronto, Derek works extensively as a bandleader, composer, and sideman playing drums/percussion with a variety of projects, including Gray Matter (a funky-jazz quintet co-lead lead with his brother, bassist Justin Gray), the transMediterranean group Ventanas, and the Indo-Jazz ensemble Monsoon. Derek also facilitates hand drum circles and workshops across the city.

fernando gallego Fernando Gallego, known as “El Reale”, was born in Cadiz, Spain. He began to sing at the age of 4 and at the age of 12 Fernando began to take singing more seriously. Fernando performed at important venues throughout Andalusia such as Peña Chato de la Isla ,la Peña Camaron de la Isla, la Peña La Cañailla, la Peña Sanlucar and more. He was also hired to perform at festivals such as La Feria de San Fernando, Puerto de Santamaria, Arcos de la Frontera, Jerez de la Frontera, Chiclana de la Frontera, Conil, and festivals in other towns and cities across Spain. Currently Fernando is singing with Compañía Esmeralda Enrique and Compañía Carmen Romero. He is also collaborating with groups such as Santerias, Triana Project and more. He is currently recording his first album.

brent gubbel s Brent Gubbels has been a Vancouver based professional musician and teacher for nearly twenty years. In that time he’s worked with a number of local musicians and ensembles including the Hard Rubber Orchestra, Gypsalero, Rumba Calzada, John Reischman, the Vince Mai Project, Jesse Zubot, Dal Richards, Lee Aaron and Dee Daniels. Since 1992, he has toured North America and Europe extensively and played a variety of international jazz and folk festivals. Brent can be heard on recordings by Oscar Lopez, Gypsalero, Juno nominees Susan Crowe and Compadres, Juno winner James Keelaghan, and others.

Ilse Gudiño has been a member of the Esmeralda Enrique Spanish Dance Company since 1997. She has travelled continuously to Spain since 2000 to study with masters such as Adela Campallo, Pastora Galván, Alicia Marquez, Úrsula López, Andrés Marín, Pilar Ogalla, Juan Ogalla, Andrés Peña, Manuel Betanzos, El Ciro, La Tati, Pilar Ortega, Juan de los Reyes, Juana Amaya, Belén Maya, La Choni, Isabel Bayón, Andrés Marín, La Farruca, Farruquito and many others. In 2010 Ilse returned to Toronto to successfully complete her MFA in Dance at York University with a focus on Flamenco in the Diaspora (May 2012). Since then, her production was presented at the Sony Center for the Performing Arts for the Toronto International Flamenco Festival. She most recently was featured in the 2013 Halifax Flamenco Festival and Moncton’s Danse Atlantique/Atlantic Dance Festival

Described as a “pure chamber musician” (Globe and Mail) creating “moments of pure magic” (Toronto Star), Canadian cellist Rachel Mercer has appeared as a soloist and chamber musician across five continents. Member of Ensemble Made In Canada, the Mercer-Park Duo, Artist-in-Residence at Western University, and Artistic Director of the “5 at the First” Chamber Music Series in Hamilton, Rachel joins the National Arts Centre Orchestra as Associate Principal Cello in January 2016. Her critically acclaimed album of the Bach Suites was recorded on the 1696 Bonjour Stradivarius from the Canada Council Instrument Bank. Winner in the 2015 competition, Rachel is grateful to have been awarded the 1730 Newland Joannes Franciscus Celoniatus cello for a 3-year loan.

finn manniche Finn is a versatile and passionate musician with a Music degree fron UBC and a penchant for playing anything and everything, whether on guitar or cello. He plays Swing and New Music, Bach to Bacharach, Surf and other worldly sounds. He can be heard playing live and on CD with: the Armadillo String Quartet, Ensemble Symposium, the Jazzmanian Devils, Soul Crib, the Paperboys, Denzel Sinclair, 54/40, Murray McLauglin, Mae Moore and Cam Wilson’s varying orchestral extravanganzas.

caroline pl anté Caroline Planté began her musical studies in Montréal. Her father, the guitarist ‘El Rubio’, transmitted his knowledge and love of music to her. Awarded many bursaries both by Arts Council of Canada and Arts and Letter Council of Quebec, she perfected her skills in Spain with several master guitarists, singers and dancers. With over 20 years of experience as a composer and guitarist, she participated in the composition and interpretation of several important productions in Canada, USA and Spain, where she was also musical director and composer Cruceta Flamenco (Madrid) from 2005 to 2013. The first female flamenco guitarist to ever compose and record a CD, 8 reflexiones, was launched in 2010 with great international success. Caroline Planté is co-director and artistic director of the Montreal Flamenco Festival since its beginning in 2012. She is currently working on our 2nd album, which will be released in 2016.


performers budge schachte Budge has worked with a stellar cast of diverse artists including; play-write Tomson Highway, Ache Brazil, Denis Chang, Coco Trevisano, Jesse Zubot, Sal Ferreras, John Korsrud, Olam, Jennifer Scott, Leora Cashe, Chor Leoni Men’s Choir, Budge Schachte Quartet as well as numerous symphony orchestra shows with Tango Paradiso, and recently (2013) with the VSO playing John Adams El Nino. He appears on several film soundtracks as well as composing, performing and recording his first feature film soundtrack for the film Love And Other Dilemmas. cameron wil son Cameron Wilson is a member of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. He is currently a member of Van Django, Joe Trio, the Hard Rubber Orchestra and Mariachi del Sol. He is also a composer/ arranger whose works have been performed by numerous symphony orchestras and ensembles and soloists across Canada and the U.S. (including the Art of Time Ensemble). He has collaborated with CBC author and storyteller Stuart Mclean on the History of Canada and has composed several film scores including the NFBs Citizen Sam. Most recently he co wrote a film noir operetta with librettist Kico Gonzalez Risso called Supernatural Noir.
