SPECTACLE
A ‘spectacle’ can be defined as a visually striking performance or display, as well as, an event or scene regarded for its visual impact. Glasses, are sometimes known as spectacles - they are fashion accessories and performative tools – which affect the way the wearer perceives the world and the way that the world perceives the wearer. 2
ARTIST’S STATEMENT: Emma Collins is a new face in the industry, creating stand-alone pieces of jewellery and unique fashion accessories in a variety of materials. Having spent time working in theatre production and events management, Emma has always surrounded herself with performativity. Her philosophy of adornment reflects this theatrical sensibility, she feels that her work should be meaningful beyond just aesthetics, and transportive for the wearer’s mindset and attitudes. What is most interesting to her is that a piece might spark a conversation or invite interaction between the wearer and observers, and that wearing the piece becomes a meaningful experience, an on-going performance and conversation.
Over the last few years Emma has been refining her knowledge and skill to open her field of vision in making. Through experimentation using a variety of materials, 3D sketches and developmental models of her designs, she has built up a visual language that forms the foundation of her methodology. In her recent work she has studied themes of identity, colonialism and language, as well as exploring the power of perspective through a project on disgrace and shock, making spectacles that play with the idea of point-of-view. 3
