Middlesex Street Estate & Petticoat Lane Market

Middlesex Street Estate was built in the 1962 to 1972 of the Corporation of London Architect‘s Department & the contractor G.E. Wallis. The building includes the Petticoat Tower & one big apartment block. The staircase in front of the estate is based at the Middlesex Street, Corner Wentworth Street. In the past the staircase went from the street to the first level of the building & to the Podium, to give visitors the chance to use the private garden inside the estate

PAULA GOEBEL INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE STUDENT goebel-interior.com paulagoebel@hotmail.com

In the past, it was my biggest dream to become an interior designer and develop residential & commercial concepts. Over the years I have worked for architects and interior designers in Germany and now I am studying Interior Architecture and Design at the London Metropolitan University in London. After finishing university I would like to work for Architecture or Design magazine or an interior office.

Glass, Brick, Concrete and Metal where used most in the architecture of the building. Untreated concrete was used for the main structure, outdoor flooring, balconies and staircases. For the facade they used dark brick with white joints. To set highlights, green painted metal was used for fences or other details. Also glass was used to create natural lighting in the carpark through glass blocks edged in rough concrete.

does not look welcome, dirty, smelly, dark First impression when entering the shop: tiny, barely natural lighting, impersonal interior, sparse & uncomfortable, no decoration, food is good presented Second impression when entering the shop: toilette door is next to the counter, green colour of paneling does not work with the rest of the interior, the white walls look inviting and brighten up the space First impression when entering the kitchen: dark, tiny, sterile, tidy First impression when entering the storage: dark, tiny, not enough space for many stuff, looks messy

Modeling development of concrete

Step 1:

Step 2:

Step 3:

For making a sample of concrete you need concrete, water, a scraper & a form in which the concrete goes after it is made.

After that, you make a little hole in the powder with the scraper & fill it with water & start to mix it.

To get a smooth paste you need to add while mixing bits of water. The paste should not be too watery & not too thick.

Step 4:

Step 5:

Step 6:

When the paste is too watery you can always add a little mount of concrete to make it thicker.

After you get a smooth paste you fill it in the form & shake the form to get rid of the air in the concrete.

After that you can keep it plane or add some context. For example I added metal shavings & powder. Then it has to dry for 3 days. The time of drying depends on how thick the piece of concrete is.

‘You employ stone, wood and concrete, and with these materials you build houses and palaces. That is construction. Ingenuity is at work. But suddenly you touch my heart, you do me good, I am happy and I say: ‘This is beautiful.‘ That is Architecture. Art enters in.‘ Le Corbusier, 1923 Le Corbusier‘s concept of his five points for a new architecture relied on: 1. “roof gardens“ - to compensate the green area consumed by the building 2. “ribbon windows“ - to allow views of the 3. “pilotis“ - to lift the building up an creating space 4. “free facades“ - non-supporting walls

MARKET STALL

Concept

The concept of the market stall is related on the history of the Petticoat Lane Market, the East End Yiddish Jazz culture & the modern age. In the past the market was famous for selling a wide range of things like fashion, groceries and more. The sellers advertised their products with loud shouts & music. Also the market is point of origin of the East End Yiddish Jazz culture because of the Yiddish immigrants. The yiddish culture created their own jazz rhythm and sound & mentioned the Petticoat Lane market very often in their songs. Also around the area Jazz competitions & dance battles were famous in the 1920. The market stall is picking up the history of the market & is advertising its products with loud Jazz music & rhythms to sell records & Jazz performances. The modern age make an impact on the design of the stall & so the classic shape of gramophone funnels changed and become more natural, elegant & modern.

The idea is to create an extension of the community space with functional pieces but also should connect interaction & design. The visit should be an experience.

MARKET STALL

First ideas & modeling development of the market stall

The market stall offers what the community want and need. It also connect interaction with experience. The Gramophones are a metaphor of 1920s and make music available for everyone.

The metal funnels transport and stimulate the music so every person can “listen“ to music. The metal transport the sound, rhythm and vibration of the music so disabled person can listen as well.

The market stall is designed for everyone of any age and is all about Joy and celebrating life. Especially on a Sunday the market stall offers the opportunity with its live music sessions a felicitous change of the everyday life of the citizen.

The metal funnels can have every organic shapes and can be used for seating, speaker, tables and shelves. The height of the funnels can vary so disabled person can reach them.

Using air-dry white modelling clay with a ceramic base to create and form these shapes. The shape should be functional but also modern & elegant.
