WELCOME TO ARTEXPO NEW YORK 2013! This is a very special Artexpo—our 35th show and our second year at Pier 92 alongside The Architectural Digest Home Design Show at Pier 94. Welcome to a weekend of fine art and design. Paintings, sculpture and other art forms have long inspired new movements in design, and vice versa. I think you’ll find that’s more apparent than ever in this year’s juried Artexpo. We’re hosting a vast array of talent (200 exhibitors from 33 countries), all offering contemporary works that will compliment a wide range of urban décor styles. Need a little help finding the right art for your space? You’ll find tips for creating inspired interiors in “How to Pair Fine Art and Furnishings” on page 46. Want to know which hues are the hottest for 2013? Be sure to attend “2013 Color Trends” by Interior Design Educators Council member Michael Pacitti. Our Topics & Trends education series is free, as always, and features many more timely courses on art, design and marketing (see full schedule on page 26). To help you visualize how a work of art might look on your walls, feel free to wander to the showrooms and displays at Pier 94. And if you fall in love with a work of art and are questioning whether or not to buy, remember this: owning fine art is easy and accessible for anyone these days, thanks to the Luxury Financing Program offered by Show Sponsor GE Capital. You can read more about that on page 42. Trade professionals are also welcome to stop by our VIP Trade Lounge. Kick back on Tucker Robbins’ eclectic, eco-friendly furniture—works of art in themselves—and enjoy drinks by Barefoot Wine and Bombay Sapphire. Thank you all for coming, and enjoy the show! Sincerely, Eric Smith Artexpo CEO

In 2010, James established the Limited Edition Giclee Publishing Division of Geneva Galleries, which concentrates specifically on career management, art publishing strategies and techniques for emerging artists. Working closely with the artist, he guides them through the pitfalls associated with the ever-changing fine art industry. James also uses his art, music and motivational speaking expertise to work with senior living communities across the United States. This has been one of his most rewarding and satisfying career experiences.

ARTISTHIGHLIGHT INDIA’S YOUNGEST ABSTRACT ARTIST:

SHORYA MAHANOT

When you hear the phrase “abstract art by a six-yearold,” the first image that might come to mind is magic marker scrawlings on the couch. But Shorya Mahanot’s art is in a whole different league. Pollock-like paint smatterings and bold, geometric forms cover the canvases of India’s youngest abstract artist. The third-born child in the family of Mr. Aditya Singh Mahanot and Mrs. Pushpa Mahanot, Shorya created his first masterpiece at just three years old and had his first solo exhibition at Mumbai’s Taj Mahal Palace just a few years later.

Title: In the Sea Artist: Shorya Mahanot Size: 18x23.5 Medium: Acrylic on Canvas

Shorya’s paintings exude a visual sophistication and balance that belies his years. What’s more, they seem to hold some degree of emotional complexity—or at least, a powerful juxtaposition of innocence and confidence. Though he might paint like an adult, his parents are careful not to push him, or his art. According to the Mahanots, “We believe kids are going to be kids only once. To enable our children to sleep without care and live with joy is our purpose in life. Shorya enjoys playing with a brush & colours. Painting comes naturally to him. We merely encourage & enable him to pursue his joy.”

GECAPITAL MAKING FINE ART

ACCESSIBLE FOR ALL

YOU’RE INVITED! GE CAPITAL’S ARTEXPO AFTER DARK Thursday, March 21 & Friday, March 22 4-7 PM

Last year’s show was a game changer for many galleries at Artexpo—especially after they discovered GE Capital’s Luxury Financing Program. “I am thankful for the GE program,” says Rosana Rader of Thomas Kinkade in Carmel, CA. “This payment option for customers helps us avoid having potential buyers walk out the door. GE has amazing customer service, are user-friendly, and the program helps close sales. Thank you GE!” The Luxury Financing program empowers gallery owners to offer art lovers flexible financing options on a dedicated line of credit. With 6, 12, 18 and even 24 months to pay (without interest!), it’s easier than ever for art aficionados to take home the art they want when they want it. Show sponsor GE Capital knows that fine art is an investment that will bring years of enjoyment to a buyer who connects deeply with a piece—whether it’s a sculpture, a painting or a mixed media work. The company also recognizes that, in today’s competitive market, gallery owners need all the tools they can get to maintain their edge. Customer research has shows that customers buy more on a GE Capital Luxury card than they would with a traditional credit card. Committed to supporting the arts, GE Capital will be hosting two extraordinary events at this year’s show. Join us for GE Capital’s Artexpo After Dark, from 4-7 pm on Thursday, March 21, and Friday, March 22. Mingle with the artists and enjoy pass hors d’oeuvres and drinks by Bombay Sapphire and Barefoot Wine.

See you after dark…!

HOW TO PAIR

FINE ART & FURNISHINGS 4 TIPS FOR CREATING INSPIRED INTERIORS Have you ever walked into a room and been completely revived and inspired by the décor? I’m sure you have—this is New York City after all, the art and design Mecca of the US. For me, when a room really pops, it features fine art and furniture that work together in counterpoint, like separate instruments in a symphony. If you’re looking to create a more compelling relationship between art and décor in your own home, here are a few helpful questions to ask yourself.

ANNA RAZUMOVSKAYA/MODERN GRACE

DIAO QINCHUN

HANS PETERSEN/IT IS!

By Eric Smith

JULIA RODRIGUEZ/SENSATIONS

1. WHAT’S MY STYLE?

This might seem like an obvious question, but it’s surprising how many people decorate based on what’s “in” rather than what they really like. Forget what’s trendy. When you walk through The Met or shows like Artexpo, do you find yourself lingering in front of traditional landscapes, or do you make a beeline for the contemporary art? When it comes to furniture, do you like bold, modern lines or scrolled, classical forms? Obviously, there can be some crossover, but it’s important to establish a baseline for your genuine preferences before you go out and buy. When I’m considering purchasing a work of art, I always take a moment to ask myself, “How does this piece makes me feel?” If the feeling is positive, that’s the impact it’s going to have on my environment every day.

2. WHAT ROLE DOES ART PLAY IN MY HOME?

Some people really like art to be center stage in their homes. They gravitate toward bright, bold conversation pieces—the bigger, the better. Others prefer to have art play more of a supporting role. Ultimately, it comes back to being true to yourself. Would you be happiest with that larger-than-life nude on your living room wall, or a smaller mixed media piece? It can help to browse interior design magazines and websites for inspiration. Better yet, explore the showrooms at The Architectural Digest Home Design Show at Pier 94, and then come back for the perfect new artwork at Artexpo New York in Pier 92.

47

3. DOES THIS PIECE RESONATE WITH MY COLLECTION?

The world of visual art has always had a strong influence on the world of design, and vice versa. Consider the Art Deco movement, which started on the canvas and ended up on the spire of the Chrysler Building. Think of Keith Harin’s graffiti-inspired urban art, which spawned legions of chairs, cushion covers and bookshelves. Every piece of furniture has general principles behind its aesthetic. Are the lines sharp and angular, or are they scrolled and classical? Now, ask yourself the same question about the work of art you are considering purchasing. Structurally, thematically and in terms of color, does it have resonance with your current décor? If not, you might consider another option. That’s not to say you can’t have an eclectic collection; but you do want the pieces to harmonize.

CRAIG ALAN/POPULOUS-AUDREY, DELJOU ART GROUP

4. DOES THIS PIECE “MATCH?” MY COLLECTION

Technically speaking, you don’t necessarily want your art to match your furnishings; you want it to complement them. Let’s say you have a red sofa. You probably don’t want to pair it with a room full of exclusively red-themed art (unless you want to scorch your guests’ retinas), but you might want to find pieces that mirror that warmth and hue. Or say your chairs have steel legs. You can play that up with art that features metallic hues or metal frames. It can be effective to play with contrasts, too. If your color scheme is trending toward monochromatic, introduce a few pops of color—perhaps some vibrant glassworks or bright cushions. You get the idea.

ROBERT HARTSHORN/NIKI 1

48

When it comes to art and furnishings, the whole really is greater than the sum of the parts. So be sure to find works that deeply speak to you and resonate with your existing décor. And a word to the wise: when you’re browsing galleries or fairs like Artexpo, be sure to bring along photos of your home. When you can see your furnishings, it’s a lot easier to find that work of art—or collection—that will pull things together and complete your space.

ARTISTHIGHLIGHT LUMINESCENT LAYERS

ABSTRACT ARTIST MARKS Looking at a painting by Marks is almost like looking at the sun’s reflection on the ocean. Luminescent and rich with depth, each work takes the eye through layers of color and texture that seem to rise and fall across the canvas. Focusing on palette and composition, Marks deftly evokes deep emotion with each of his nuanced works. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, he was raised by parents deeply rooted in artistic creation. His transient childhood provided a rich index of experiences from which he has distilled a unique style and process in his passionate pursuit of art. Today, Marks is represented in prominent, international corporate collections and the private collections of celebrity chefs, professional athletes and international celebrities. His works have also been featured in publications such as Florida Design, Texas Home & Décor and New York Magazine.

ARTISTHIGHLIGHT MOLTEN GLASS MAVEN:

ALEXIS SILK

From the day she discovered the fiery art of hot glass blowing, sculptor Alexis Silk took to it “like a fish to water.” Indeed, this fluid agility is apparent in her creations, which range from expressive, multihued heads to life-size torsos suspended from steel frames. Sometimes joyful, sometimes sensually haunting, Alexis’ works are nothing if not provocative. An Art Institute graduate, Alexis finds in her medium the perfect intersection of her passion for working in hot glass, her lifelong fascination with the human figure and her desire for conceptual expression. While making intrinsically beautiful objects, she also explores issues of human nature, society, and the relationship between humans, nature and industry. Her hanging figures, for instance, are an eloquent exploration of objectification of the body. Her work pushes boundaries physically as well as conceptually. Her largest figures are close to half her body weight and take a team of five or six assistants to handle the glass while she sculpts them. And of course, all pieces are sculpted freehand while the glass is swelteringly hot.

Discover Alexis’ creations at Booth #1014
