CARLOS ALBERTO BAHAMON At Artexpo New York, we’re always on the lookout for exciting new talent. So this year, we held our debut Artexpo Poster Challenge. The contest took place over Facebook, and we invited fans to submit their original artwork to be considered for our ofﬁcial show poster. Out of 200 entries, our jury chose 10 ﬁnalists (listed to the right), and the grand prize winner was San Diego artist Carlos Alberto Bahamon. Congratulations, Carlos! By now, you’ve probably seen his winning artwork, the iconic “Times Square,” on posters throughout the show. You can also see his originals here at Pier 94 on Display Wall 8 and at the Canapo Gallery Booth, #221.

About Carlos Born in Bogota, Carlos studied electronic engineering in university while also cultivating the hobby he loved most: drawing. The same bus that he took to get to school also stopped at the city’s main library, and Carlos often spent hours in the art section poring over books on art and photography. There, he discovered Salvador Dali, master of Spanish Surrealism. It was Dali’s work that ultimately inspired Carlos to set aside computers and electrons and move on to canvases and paintbrushes. Carlos decided to leave school and devote his time to painting. He settled in Medellin and began to pursue his passion. In 1997, he had his ﬁrst exhibition, which was extremely successful and served Carlos Alberto Bahamon / Canapo Gallery as a springboard for artistic forays to Paris. While he thoroughly enjoyed soaking in the sights and the masterworks in museums, his homeland remained a strong inﬂuence, with its bright colors, culture and people. The collection has had more than 100 worldwide exhibitions since its first release, and this is the first major exhibition since Mandela’s passing in December of last year. Said Mandela, “These sketches are not so much about my life as they are about my own country. I drew hands because they are powerful instruments—hands can hurt or heal, punish or uplift. They can also be bound, but a quest for righteousness can never be repressed. In time, we broke loose these shackles of injustice, we joined hands across social divides and national boundaries, between continents and over oceans and now we look to the future, knowing that even if it is age makes us wiser guides, it’s the youth that reminds us of love, trust and the value of life.” Touch Galleries sells the signed, limited edition lithographs with prices ranging from $10,000 to $25,000. Some of the editions are sold out and can only be secured through the secondary market. When you buy a Mandela lithograph, you own a piece of the unique Mandela spirit, and you also help support Mandela’s wish to eradicate poverty. Part of the proceeds from the sale of these works goes towards Mandela’s beloved Afrika Tikkun in its efforts to aid impoverished communities in South Africa.
