Welcome to Artexpo New York 2016 The time has come again for the art world to converge upon New York City for a much-anticipated annual event: Artexpo New York. We’re proud to say that this show—the world’s largest fine art trade show—has a long history. Now in its 38th year, Artexpo is still one of the few art shows in the world that attracts not only art collectors, but also designers, architects, gallery owners, and other trade buyers. And the fact that Artexpo is a magnet to trade professionals is a huge boon to our exhibitors, offering them opportunities they might not otherwise face. Speaking of our wonderful exhibitors, what I find to be one of the best aspects of our show is the personal connection audiences make to the artists and galleries showing their work. Rarely do attendees get to meet the artists being represented at other shows—but at Artexpo, many exhibiting galleries and publishers bring along their individual artists, giving them the chance to represent their artwork in person and make priceless contacts throughout the four-day show, whether they be with potential clients or soon-to-be lifelong fans. So, don’t be afraid to meet the artists whose work intrigues you. Ask them questions! Artists usually love to talk about their inspiration, their process, and their body of work. Find something you like and connect with the hands and eyes who crafted it. And, if you’re so inclined, buy a piece of art, a treasure for your personal collection that will serve as a reminder of this amazing weekend long after you arrive back home. Also while you’re here, don’t miss the fabulous events we have planned for you. The weekend will be chock-full of engaging Topics & Trends seminars, Meet the Artist live demos, and other special events. Grab a glass of wine and stroll the booths, or sit back and listen to inspiring stories from top artists, designers, and gallery owners. We’re thrilled that you could join us for another extraordinary year at Pier 94! Sincerely,
Eric Smith President, Redwood Media Group

BREAKING THE MYTH OF THE STARVING ARTIST 3:30–4:30 P.M. Art is important; it challenges the status quo and leads to innovation and change. Crista Cloutier of The Working Artist encourages artists to claim their rightful role as leaders. In this age of despair over the destruction of our planet and the crushing blows of capitalism, it is creative thinking that will save the world. Yet creativity is increasingly under threat, particularly in our educational systems. The myth of the starving artist serves no one. For too long, artists have played a passive role and have approached their birthright with shame. But shame and creativity do not mix, and if we are to move forward and lead we must renounce this shame and lead. Who should attend: Artist interested in making art and the art industry their career Speaker: Crista Cloutier

ANDERS JORULF
The Bridge, NY by Anders Jorulf
Swedish photographer Anders Jorulf showcases breathtaking landscapes and cityscapes in his work, managing to create a brilliant juxtaposition of drama and calm in his photos by manipulating his camera’s technology and painstakingly hunting for the perfect moment of natural lighting. Jorulf researches the site’s conditions and weather forecasts thoroughly before his expeditions, following a detailed plan as he ventures out to capture just the right feeling and structure in each composition. “It is an art form to see, understand, and know how a modern camera ... reacts to different light phenomena,” he explains. But he doesn’t find the process tedious—quite the opposite, in fact. “To find the view, see through the lens, and anticipate the perfect light is not just a long wait,” Jorulf shares, “it gives me time for reflection and tranquility.”
MADDI RING Having traveled to over 55 countries during her career, self-taught photographer Maddi Ring explores the vast landscape of cultural diversity through her work. “I have traveled to remote parts of the world seeking out unusual images of people, still life, landscape, and architecture,” Ring explains. And her magnificent collection reflects that perpetual curiosity, boasting striking black-and-white images of children, animals, pathways, and rugged terrains as well as brightly colored shots of villagers, street scenes, and sunsets. As co-owner of the New York Center for Photographic Art, she works to provide other photographers with global travel opportunities as well as New York gallery exhibition opportunities. MICHAEL EZRA Renowned photographer Michael Ezra of Tbilisi, Georgia, has captured the attention of the world for over a decade with his simple yet hauntingly gorgeous fine-art nudes, presenting the strength, grace, and structural beauty of the human form against a spare backdrop. Inspired by Michelangelo’s sculptures, Ezra turned from surrealistic painting to black-andwhite photography in 2000, devoting himself to portraying the depths of the human soul and pure physical aesthetics alike in his sculptural nudes. His work, both provocative and unconventional, has earned him a wide following, and can be found in private collections in the U.S., Canada, the Netherlands, Germany, Slovakia, Australia, and Barbados.
DEAN MAYO
Scripps by Dean Mayo
His unique background as a PGA Professional for over 20 years lends Dean Mayo inherent advantages when it comes to taking photos. “Just as in golf,” Mayo explains, “great shots require great visualization ... My preparation requires seeing the shot from every angle through my lens.” Never one to imagine turning in his golf clubs for a Canon, about eight years ago Mayo discovered his love for shooting outdoor images and combined his two passions by creating Foretography, his photography business. With a portfolio that includes a plethora of stunning golfcourse shots, as well as awe-inspiring landscapes from California’s most revered natural destinations, Mayo strikes the perfect balance between his dual interests, all while taking us along on the scenic journey. MIKE CABLE Award-winning abstract photographer Mike Cable is on a relentless search to find unexpected beauty in typically ordinary objects, materials, and settings—and succeeds in doing so beyond measure. His carefully composed shots illuminate maplike patterns in organic matter, dazzlingly intricate textures in glass windows, gorgeous cracks and vivid hues in rusted car parts or old wooden structures. Marvelously attuned to the details in his surroundings, Cable offers viewers of his work a chance to reframe the way they view the world. What more could one ask of an artist?

2016 Poster Challenge Winner: ADRIAN ARRIETA MEET ADRIAN ARRIETA, the 23-yearold artist who took our social media-powered Artexpo New York Poster Challenge by storm in his quest to garner the most votes in the 2016 contest. Earning the top honor with his painting The Princess of the Strawberry Mouth, Arrieta looks back with us at his journey and the sacrifices he’s made to get to this point—a point we are confident signals just the beginning of an exciting art career ahead. Born in Rodas, a municipality in the Cienfuegos Province of Cuba, Arrieta grew up longing to become an artist, but often felt discouraged by the impracticality of his dreams. “I was always skeptical about becoming an artist in my country,” Arrieta explains. “I [could] never find the freedom to criticize society through my paintings without being repressed here ... The lack of freedom in Cuba imposes a protocol that needs to be followed.” Nevertheless, Arrieta, the son of a pharmacist and an English teacher, immersed himself in art whenever he could, thriving during the portion of his school day that he got to spend in art class. He shares, “Although I enjoyed the other subjects at school, my art class stood out the most. Perhaps it was the chance of getting to express what I felt in those 45 minutes of class that drove me towards the bizarre idea of becoming an artist.” At age 14, Arrieta left his home to attend the Benny Moré School of Art, one of the top visual and performing arts schools in Cuba. Unsure if it was worth being separated from his family in order to pursue such an elusive goal with meager financial support, he nevertheless pressed on, eventually graduating at the top of his class. His fine standing upon completion at the academy provided him with several 46
“To be able to paint is my only dream and I will do anything in order to achieve it.” opportunities to exhibit his work throughout the Cienfuegos Province. “I never denied an opportunity,” says Arrieta. “I would barely sleep, but just to think that somebody could understand my work and actually like it was my definite accomplishment.” After graduating, Arrieta decided to come to the United States to attend college in Miami and broaden his potential exhibition opportunities.“I came to the U.S. not only to begin my studies in graphic design, but also to be able to exhibit at the best places in the country,” he explains.“One of those places—and perhaps the first one on the list—was New York.” Upon arriving in Miami, he finally set about to put his creative ideas to work—but he quickly became bogged down by the pressures of making a living while pursuing his education. Working 48 hours a week to help his family pay for their basic needs while attending classes
Monday through Friday, Arrieta felt his dream of painting was fading. “But I never give up,” asserts Arrieta, “To be able to paint is my only dream and I will do anything in order to achieve it.” While he was researching U.S. painting contests this past January, he came upon the call for entries to the 2016 Artexpo New York Poster Challenge. Never one to turn down an opportunity, no matter how daunting, Arrieta submitted The Princess of the Strawberry Mouth to the contest, hoping against hope that his artwork would end up being the one that tens of thousands of show attendees would see splashed across the Artexpo show poster come spring. Much to Arrieta’s surprise, his painting was chosen from over 550 original entries as a top 10 finalist by the selection jury just two weeks later.“I barely slept for a week when I received the notice that I was one
of the 10 finalists,” he confesses, “and I could not stop thanking my friends and family for supporting me on social media.” Amassing the largest number of votes on Facebook during the one-week public voting period, Arrieta was named the winner of the 2016 contest, scoring a host of exposure opportunities that totaled a value of $20,000, including the chance to exhibit his work at Artexpo New York. Arrieta is still incredulous that the last couple of months transpired the way they did. “I will never be thankful enough for the opportunities I have received in this country, to receive such an enormous chance,” he shares. “I am [exhibiting] in New York and, as I am saying this, I still cannot believe it.” View Adrian Arrieta’s winning artwork, The Princess of the Strawberry Mouth, at Display Wall Reg-4, near the entrance to Artexpo New York.
The Inspiration Behind the Winning Artwork “The princess is sad . . . from the princess slips such sighs in her words from the strawberry lips.” -From “Sonatina,” by acclaimed Nicaraguan poet Rubén Darío “What inspired me the most to paint The Princess of the Strawberry Mouth was the pictorial and fresh perspective of beauty in Ruben Dario’s poem ‘Sonatina.’ [It reflects] the constant battle between the contradiction of power and materialism ... the complex understanding of sadness behind the fulfillment of a free spirit. My painting stretches the ambivalence between freedom and the mooring of our own self-esteem [when we try] to match the perfect standard of beauty. The cost of the exposure of feelings, ... [the destruction of] inner happiness. The painting is a ... portrait alluding to the human being staying prisoner of their search [for] forgiveness and acceptance of who they actually are. The background is composed of the color magenta, [signifying a] release, a spiritual approach through the explosions of colors [that represent] the criticism of the world in our eyes.” – Adrian Arrieta

2016 Spotlight Artists A MUCH-ANTICIPATED programming element of Redwood Media Group’s other art shows, the Spotlight Artist Program is being featured for the very first time at Artexpo New York in 2016 and will continue to be a highlight at the show in future years. Read on to learn more about the four esteemed artists who have been selected for this year’s Spotlight Artist Program. RICARDO LOWENBERG Gleaning artistic influence from an amalgam of art history’s greatest painters, Mexico-born painter Ricardo Lowenberg transforms the canvas with his skillful manipulation of shape, color, texture, and rhythm. In his portrayal of the everyday world, Lowenberg transforms scenes of the mundane into spiritually infused pieces of art. Strongly influenced by the work of Frida Kahlo, Lowenberg uses dreamlike colors, symbolic props, and textural paint application to produce a modern surrealism relevant to contemporary life in
Mexico City. In much of his figurative work, Lowenberg concentrates on the human face to capture the emotions, thoughts, and subtle nuances portrayed within the telling eyes of the subject. His still life and landscape paintings portray a post-Impressionist sensibility reminiscent of those late 19th century masters of hue and light, including Cézanne and Gauguin. Using a refined and muted color palette, Lowenberg carefully models the form, to create a surprising canvas that is dually flat and threedimensional. His work has been collected and exhibited throughout the U.S., Mexico, and Europe.

ALEXIS SILK Alexis Silk is breaking exciting ground with dramatic new works in blown glass and metal that are at once timeless and thought provoking. Emerging from the intersection of the artist’s fascination with the human figure, passion for her molten medium, and desire for conceptual expression, the work exhibits surprising maturity and depth. Technically, Silk is pushing the boundaries of what is possible, sculpting her glass figures entirely freehand while the glass is hot on the end of a blowpipe or punty rod. Her largest figures are close to half her body weight and take a team of six assistants to handle the glass while she is sculpting them. While making intrinsically beautiful objects, Silk explores issues of human nature, society, and the

relationship of humans, nature, and industry. Her hanging figures are an eloquent exploration of objectification of the body. Since receiving her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2005, Silk has continued to study with glass masters such as Pino Signoretto, Richard Royal, and Boyd Sugiki. She has been working full time as an artist since 2006. Today she has work in museums, galleries, private collections, and fine art shows around the world. JONATHAN BRENDER Born in Caracas, Jonathan Brender has felt passionate about the arts since he was a young boy, growing up in a unique cultural melting pot of native Venezuelans and Europeans. Jonathan started drawing comics, cars, and boats until he moved on to study ceramics and sculpture for three years at the renowned Arte y Fuego. Feeling the need to expand his knowledge, culture and skills, he eventually moved to the U.S. to pursue the art of canvas painting

with a unique modern style. Inspired by a two-month trip he took to Australia’s back country, Brender began to study the Aborigines’ art of pointillism. He started modifying that art into portraits of modern icons and found immediate success at exhibitions with his new style. With each piece of artwork containing up to 180,000 painted dots, Brender caps his artistic output at 10–12 paintings a year because the process is so time-consuming. Brender’s unique cultural and artistic background, along with his experience, vision, and personality, makes his work one of a kind. He’s exhibited his work in places such as Israel, England, Venezuela, Brazil, Panama, and the U.S. Some of his work can be seen at prestigious five-star hotels in Venezuela, in commercial buildings in Miami, and in private collections around the world. GREGG ALBRACHT Fine art photographer Gregg Albracht’s passion for photography started in the summer of 1969 when
he saw a portfolio of fine art photos. “I was mesmerized by their richness and beauty,” Albracht says. “It was in that moment that photography took a hold of me and I discovered what was to become my life’s work.” Starting decades ago with blackand-white images, he has evolved his craft over time and, today, uses all means of photographic technology to adapt his images for his new Dream Series. Many of Albracht’s photographs are considered a window to the west—a timeless place where human beings live in deep connection to the animals and the land. He’s not after a uniform look, which would tie his photographs together, but rather approaches each new image as if it’s the first he’s ever done. Albracht has had more than 80 shows all over the west and has won more than 25 regional and national awards. His photographs are exhibited in museum collections throughout the country, including collections in Montana, Santa Fe, Nebraska, and Washington, D.C. 53

The New Figurative:
Abstract Interpretations of the Human Form THE BEAUTY AND COMPLEXITY of the human form has been interpreted by artists for centuries. And while much of the work that depicts the human face and figure is strictly representational, there’s also a huge array of abstract figure-centered artwork on the market today and in recent decades. The abstract representation of the human form is what unites the following accomplished contemporary artists exhibiting at Artexpo New York 2016. From bold and provocative to introspective and allusory, the work of each of these international artists offers a unique perspective on the power, grace, and emotional depth contained within the human form.
Yellow Fever by Violetta Livshen
Violetta Livshen Born in Odessa, Ukraine, Violetta Livshen reveals both physical and emotional spaces within her figurative work, which ranges from whimsical costumed female figures to passion-fueled depictions of nightlife and the starkness of the human experience. “My figures are searchers, looking for ways to be at ease in their own skin,” Livshen explains. “Painting from an intuitive place will often take me into the unexpected, where shapes, colors, marks, and lines take on a life of their own, revealing mysteries to ponder and reflect on.
