WELCOME TO ARTEXPO NEW YORK 2017

W

e’re thrilled to welcome you to the 39th edition of Artexpo New York! For four days, you’ll get to scout out the latest innovations from over 400 exhibitors from around the world, representing more than 1,000 artists. What is it that makes Artexpo such a draw every year? Beyond the show’s trade buyer program and incredible selection of artwork, educational seminars, and art demonstrations, Artexpo offers a unique opportunity to attendees: the chance to meet the artists—whether they’re exhibiting solo or with a gallery or publisher—and make a personal connection when picking out a piece to take home. When I’m not busy with RMG’s events, I love attending as many other art shows as I can. I love the anticipation, that constant search for the next perfect piece to add to my collection. But how do you know when to buy? When there are compelling paintings and sculptures around every corner, how can you tell when you’ve come upon a musthave piece? First, there’s a gut reaction, that magical feeling when you peek into a booth and see something that captivates you. That’s when you take the next step—talk to the artist or dealer and find out why they created the piece you like. Ask them whatever you’re curious about: How long did it take to create this piece? What’s your favorite medium to work with? What inspires you? Then leave for a few minutes and let it marinate. Grab a drink. Check out a live demo. Go back. Still love it? Buy it! That’s what happened to me last year. I found a piece, had a discussion with the artist, and then found out my wife loved the very same piece. Sold! It’s hanging on my wall today. So my wish for you this weekend is to make a connection with the exhibitors who move you the most. Don’t be shy—enjoy the show, and leave with a new piece of art to commemorate the experience. Cheers,

Eric Smith President, Redwood Media Group

The Ardmore sculptors and painters have explored new styles of ceramic art in their expressive use of clay and intricate painting techniques. Their collaborative approach to design, with two or three artists involved in each unique piece, has inspired a wave of creativity in this remote South African community. Ardmore’s cooperative venture has enriched the rural economy and uplifted the lives of the artists and their families. IN THE CLOUDS:

AIRBUS CORPORATE JETS PARTNERSHIP EXHIBIT

A

rtexpo New York is proud to reach for the sky this year as it welcomes Airbus Corporate Jets (ACJ) to the art scene. As a show partner, ACJ is bringing two prestigious artists together to evoke the luxurious experience of flying with ACJ. Imagine being in your own world amidst the clouds above—that’s the world imagined in one of Berndnaut Smilde’s installations. You’ll be at once amazed and immersed in the fantasy and magic of Smilde’s visual artistry, expertly captured by world-class fine art photographer RJ Muna.

RJ Muna

ACJ’s reasons for using these two master artists to depict the ACJ brand are evident. ACJ’s unique expertise creates the world’s most rewarding flying experience by providing their customers with the finest service, best technology, and highest standards of care in corporate aviation. With the most modern aircraft family on the market, ACJ works to make every experience like flying on a cloud. And ACJ customers can rest assured that wherever in the world they choose to fly, they and the aircraft will be supported around the clock. As John Leahy, Airbus Chief Operating Officer – Customers, explains, “Airbus Corporate Jets deliver a heritage of comfort, space, and reliability that is unmatched in the business jet world, so when you fly to save time, you’ll find that time flies in an ACJ.”

With the concept of partnership as the inspiration for ACJ’s relationship with their clients, it’s no wonder that the collaboration between Smilde and Muna was chosen as the imagery for the ACJ brand. Muna has excelled in his exploration and appreciation of architectural locations, the kinetic energy of movement and dance, and examinations of still life to create his award-winning fine artworks. Many of his images combine surrealism with reality, all with an elegant feel. And then there’s Smilde, a visual artist who uses his daily surroundings as motives, examining the temporal nature of construction and deconstruction to explore the balance between interior and exterior, size, and material function. Smilde’s indoor clouds, known as the “Nimbus Series,” might be called a temporary art installation or even a transitory sculpture. Captured with expertise by Muna, they bring to life ACJ’s dreamlike idea of pure luxury at 40,000 feet. And lucky for all of us at Artexpo New York 2017, the show’s partnership with ACJ has brought a full display of Smilde and Muna’s amazing “Nimbus” collaboration to the VIP Lounge area for our enjoyment. Stop by and learn more about these two remarkable artists and how ACJ can transport you into the clouds in comfort and elegance.

2017 SPOTLIGHT ARTISTS

Lady in Red (detail) / Paul Brandejs

Crosstown Traffic / Dwight Baird

PAUL BRANDEJS - F335

DWIGHT BAIRD - S413

Paul Brandejs is an abstract artist who works with acrylic and photography on sculpted canvas. By applying a variety of acrylic techniques to photographic imagery, he combines the best of each medium—the precision of digital photography with the unpredictability and fluidity of paint. Reflecting on his art, Brandejs shares, “My inspiration can come from anywhere. I have been intrigued by the moon and the night sky or the fluid motion of water. Or how the shadows fall to create intriguing shapes in the narrow streets of Florence. I look through the lens of a camera for the abstract in nature. And then I am amazed at their transformation into a new piece of art.”

Dwight Baird has been painting for over 35 years, evolving from watercolors to acrylics. Today, he paints in a contemporary realism style, combining large, big-brush impressionist strokes and subtle squares juxtaposed with highly defined focal points. His subjects are in constant evolution as he discovers new places and techniques. Baird's most recent series of works—not just paintings, but also a collection of historical documents—depict the daily struggle in Cuba, a country anchored in the past yet on the verge of dramatic change.

Alieno / Vlad Korol

VLAD KOROL - F573 Paris, France

Vlad Korol’s passion for photography and image development began in 1979, when his father presented him with a Smena–8 camera. His focus in recent decades has been to capture the natural world in bloom. Through his first multi-part collection, “Flora Criogenica,” Korol exposes hues and tones never before produced as a result of unique development techniques. He continues to refine his process of cryogenically freezing subjects in order to expose and control pure color and form, while allowing this personally constructed palette to evolve through new visual applications and concepts. http://vlad-korol.com

JUNAID SÉNÉCHALSENEKAL - S605

DIANE FONTAINE - S221

Knysha, Garden Route, South Africa Junaid Sénéchal-Senekal creates emotion and awareness with dancing figures, abstract subjects, beloved wild African animals and landscapes, and architectural structures. Exquisitely inventive in graphic technique and color theory, he incorporates his secret silver technique of layering and embossing heavy textures to make his artwork truly distinctive, catching light in the most spectacular ways. Combined with his limited color palette and expressive brushwork, each composition is a expression of movement and tension. www.jssartgallery.com

Gatineau, Quebec, Canada

At nine years old, Diane Fontaine created her first oil painting and began to invent her own characters. After working as an illustrator and exploring different mediums, she eventually discovered a passion for acrylic and began to concentrate her efforts on mixed-media techniques. In her work, Fontaine explores emotions, depth, and movement through shadow, contrast, and extreme light, achieving a balance that is at once exuberant and introspective. Calling her work “a tribute to the goddess, the warrior, and the queen in every woman,” Fontaine explores the femininity and attitude of her characters through shapes, colors, and emotionally strong subjects. www.fontaineartiste.com

Neuro-Optical Contemplative is a new and different way of painting I invented. I invite you to reflect and contemplate the artwork, as it requires you to see a fixed image in a circular case that represents the Infinite Universe and to optically transfer that image to the next circular image that serves as a projection of the first image. This is a contemplative visual experience where the eyes actively participate, provoking a feeling of reflection and participation. Contemplating this in person can even be a healing experience, as the mind reflects the peaceful objects and their meanings.

[PLATFORM] AWARDS: THE RESULTS ARE IN

L

ast spring, Redwood Media Group announced its first-ever [PLATFORM] Artist of the Year contest, sponsored by Art Brand Studios, a comprehensive art publishing company with over 30 years’ experience in the industry. The awards contest, offering prizes totaling $375,000 in value, was created to find the next “it” artist, offering the winner a contract with Art Brand Studios, exhibition opportunities, career coaching, and more. Along with nine finalists and four special category winners in sculpture, glass, mixed media, and photography, a grand-prize winner was named in December of 2016: Kevin Grass.

KEVIN GRASS

“We created the [PLATFORM] Artist of the Year contest to empower talented artists and introduce their work to the world,” says Eric Smith, president and CEO of Redwood Media Group. “We had really wonderful artists submit their work, so it was a tough decision to make, and we are really excited to provide this opportunity to Kevin Grass, a very gifted artist.” The entrants’ work was judged by a panel of esteemed art-industry insiders: Mary Ann Cohen, James Lambert, James Baird, and Smith. The panel considered originality, sense of composition, creativity, technical skill, use of materials and light, commercial appeal, and overall impact of the artwork when judging the work.

Revolution by Kevin Grass

ARTIST OF THE YEAR: KEVIN GRASS Artist Kevin Grass was announced the winner of the [PLATFORM] Artist of the Year Awards and will receive prizes valued at $65,000, including a $10,000 cash advance against future royalties, a publishing and licensing contract with Art Brand Studios, and numerous exhibition opportunities at Redwood Media Group’s 2016–2017 shows. “I feel very honored that I was chosen as the winner the first year of the [PLATFORM] Awards among all of the talented artists that entered,” said Grass. “I couldn’t be more excited for this opportunity and to see what comes next.” Grass, a full-time Assistant Professor of Art at St. Petersburg College in Clearwater, Florida, paints representational landscape and surrealistic figure paintings. He has been interested in art since he was a young child and, while in high school, he spent time on a wide variety of commissioned works, ranging from portraits and landscapes to campaign signs and car decorations. He exhibits ARTEXPO NEW YORK 2017 I PIER 94

Grass’s work has been purchased for museum, corporate, public, and private collections throughout the United States and in Europe. Art Brand Studios is excited to work with Grass and thinks his work has tremendous appeal and opportunity. Art Brand Studios will be providing not only art publishing, but also collaboration with Grass, offering him a comprehensive set of tools from retail placement to marketing strategy, propelling his art, and building his brand and market reach in the art industry. THROUGH THE PRISM: A REVOLUTION IN COLOR PRINTING

T

oday, more prints of artists’ original works are sold each year than any other artistic medium or output. Vibrant, digital prints allow everyone the opportunity to have masterworks on their walls. Famous, well-established, and rising artists all offer limited reproduction prints as a way to satisfy demands of their fans, as well as provide longer reach and value for the work they produce. With the demand for limited reproduction prints rising, color and quality are of utmost importance and value. And the vibrancy of art catalogs, art books, and other print productions truly matters in accurately representing the spirit and depth of the artworks represented. But printing color-accurate reproductions can be time-consuming, costly, and fraught with frustration. Not anymore! Graphika Print Solutions is a pioneer in driving innovation in the printing process and using ColorXTC technology. ColorXTC’s technology, Dynamic Press Profiling (DPP), simplifies the Color Management process in a print workflow and makes coloraccurate reproductions a practical reality. THE NEED FOR A COLOR REVOLUTION Art Brand Studios had a problem. They have printed numerous books and catalogs of Thomas Kinkade’s artworks over the last 20 years. As the most published artist in history, Kinkade always demanded the highest levels of color accuracy. Wouldn’t you have a similar desire for the artworks you reproduced,

whether in print catalogs or other digital representations? Unfortunately, the color printing technology used by most printers today is decades old. While many reproductions of Kinkade’s work were satisfactory, hours of time were spent adjusting the press and efforts to recreate proofs on the printing press were regularly unsuccessful, causing delays, wasted time, and extra cost. Using ColorXTC technology, Graphika Print Solutions was able to produce a true coloraccurate catalog of Thomas Kinkade’s artworks that knocked the socks off their client! “When we opened the books for the first time this week, all of us were overwhelmed with the quality of the printing and reproduction of color. The staff here are ecstatic, and the reviews from collectors and our dealers are universal in their acclaim as to the quality of the books and the beauty of the reproductions of the artwork.” - James Lambert, VP of Business Development & Creative, Art Brand Studios
