WELCOME TO ARTEXPO NEW YORK 2018
W
e welcome you to the 40th edition of Artexpo New York! It’s an exciting anniversary year and we’re very proud to be the team to bring you into the beginning of the fifth decade of the world’s leading fine art marketplace. When I stop and think about it—40 years is a long time! And it’s very clear to me that this show has endured over the span of four decades because of you: the collectors, the artists, the art industry professionals and gallery owners. Without you, it wouldn’t exist. Over the decades, Artexpo New York has been the place for an amazing group of artists to start their careers. Throughout the late 70’s and early 80’s there were so many celebrity actors who launched their art careers at Artexpo New York. It was a constant flow of discovering the artistic side of well-known stars like Henry Fonda, Anthony Quinn, Ron Palillo, Buddy Ebsen, Burt Young, Donna Summer, John Lennon, and so many others. Of course, there are artists who’s exhibit at Artexpo was the beginning of becoming an art world icon—Ken Keeley, Yuroz, Thomas Kinkade, Robert Indiana, Michel Delacroix, Erte, Britto. And the notables who spent more than their “15 minutes of fame” at Artexpo, like Andy Warhol, Peter Max, Robert Rauschenberg, and who’s work is still highly collected and featured at Artexpo today. Today, the show’s curated spectrum of art publishers, galleries, established and emerging artists celebrates the best in the art world. It’s four days of excitement with aisles brimming with the latest art innovations showcased by 400 exhibitors from around the world, representing more than 1,000 artists. It’s a gathering place where once a year the art world merges to recharge their batteries, listen and learn from our Topics & Trends Education Program, see new innovative works, find that hidden gem for their collection or a client, meet with old friends and make new ones. And that energy is what always excites me! Redwood Media Group is honored to be the keeper of this iconic show’s legacy and we look forward to sharing Artexpo New York 2018 with you. Enjoy the show—and leave with a new piece of art or two to commemorate the 40th!
Sincerely, Eric Smith President, Redwood Media Group artexpo new york 2018

Dear Friends: I am delighted to welcome everyone to the 40th Annual Artexpo New York at Pier 94. As a dynamic hub of culture and commerce, New York is proud to host top international artists, dealers, collectors, gallery owners, and enthusiasts of all backgrounds for the world’s largest fine arts trade show and marketplace. Featuring seminars and discussions with industry leaders and more than 400 exhibitors offering a wide array of original paintings, drawings, sculpture, photography, lithographs, ceramics, and works in other mediums, Artexpo is a wonderful opportunity for attendees to network, discover new talent, and learn more about the trends and innovations that are shaping the global arts sector. This exciting four-day event also includes its [SOLO] and [FOTO SOLO] companion shows to highlight the creations of independent artists and photographers. As you celebrate its milestone anniversary, I applaud everyone associated with this outstanding annual expo that engages our diverse residents, strengthens our vibrant artistic community, and enriches the cultural landscape of the five boroughs. On behalf of all New Yorkers, congratulations on forty excellent years. Please accept my best wishes for a productive and inspiring show and an enjoyable stay for all those visiting our city for this terrific exhibition. Sincerely,
Bill de Blasio Mayor

BRUCE ADAMS Publisher, Santa Fean Magazine With and art collection that started somewhere around junior high, with a slew of unframed posters of various sports and music stars taped to the walls of his bedroom, it’s really no surprise that Bruce Adams found himself in Santa Fe, one of this country’s top destinations for art. As the publisher of Santa Fean Magazine, he’s on the pulse of what’s happening in the city and with art. For the last ten years, he has grown Santa Fean into the region’s leading print medium, a professional, top-quality, bi-monthly magazine about art, culture, dining, history and lifestyle that reaches an affluent and informed readership, both in Santa Fe, nationally and internationally. Today, by the way, all of his artwork is beautifully framed—and none of it is taped to the walls! www.santafean.com CHRISTINA KRÜSI Artist, Gallery Steiner Christina Krüsi is a Swiss contemporary portfolio-artist and author. ART LABS, SPOTLIGHT PROGRAM, MEET THE ARTIST EVENTS THURSDAY, APRIL 19 | 12:00—7:00 P.M. 12:00—7:00 P.M. ART LAB: STRANGER FRUIT JON HENRY FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHY Location: [SOLO] Cafe A special exhibition, created by noted visual artist Jon Henry, Stranger Fruit’sthought-provoking images are the artist’s reflection on the black family—his own and the community at large. And, then, he strives to take a deeper look at the mother/son relationship in the wake of the murders of African American men due to police violence. The title of the project is a reference to the song “Strange Fruit,” immortalized by Billie Holiday. Instead of black bodies hanging from the Poplar Tree as in the song, these sons of our families, our communities, are being killed in the street. 12:00—7:00 P.M. Be fascinated as she explains how she starts with a palette of photographic images and textures that provides a range of realism, which in turn makes the final work a marriage of photography and digital painting to create photomontage works of art. *Denotes full description at artist’s first mention in schedule. ARTEXPO NEW YORK TURNS 40!
H
BY JAMIE FORBES AND VICTOR FORBES FOUNDERS AND OWNERS OF SUNSTORM FINE ART MAGAZINE
appy 40th Anniversary Artexpo New York and congratulations to Eric Smith, Rick Barnett, Geoff Fox, Linda Mariano and your entire staff. Over the last decades, it has been our great pleasure to work with the show, publicizing and displaying art on the show floor of Artexpo. We first walked the exhibition when it was at the New York Coliseum Hall. We were first introduced to the show by Victor’s grandmother, Helen Dunn, who was interviewing Henry Fonda in the offices of Artexpo founders Phil Coffaro and Gerry Leberfeld. Dali’s notorious European publisher, Leon Amiel, also represented Fonda, was there to present the actor’s paintings along with a collection of limited edition graphics at the show in 1981. During the 80’s, a polite bedlam overtook the Artexpo New York scene as people waited on line for the doors to open to get to the “hot” booths before they “sold out” of the high demand works. At the Marigold booth, you had to have an appointment to meet a salesperson—the floor was absolutely packed with trade buyers on opening day. Yes, Virginia, it really was like that! The industry of quality art prints was booming as affordable limited editions came into being. Artists who come to mind from that first decade: Erté, Agam, Pisarro, Orlando Agudelo-Botero, Ting Shao Kuang, Jiang Ti-Feng, Chagall, Picasso, Alex Katz, Will Barnett, Impiglia, and Marcus Pierson. Meisner Galleries were on the back cover of every magazine with their latest Michael Wilkinson sculpture releases. Andy Warhol’s environmental series of prints made their debut to good exposure at Artexpo. Dealers and publishers championed them all. Chalk and Vermilion, Circle Fine Art, Dyansen, Marigold, Meisner, Fingerhut, London Contemporary Art—success unfolded before them like a wave of manna from heaven. Eager buyers—young and old—decorators, gallery chains, frame molding businesses and individuals consumed all the hot new works of art created just for the occasion. Exhibitors sold out and the editions ordered were distributed to buyers within days. A series of new hit artists arose, championed by art publishers like Ron Segal, Glenn Engman, Robert Bane, Marilyn Goldberg, Nan Miller and so many others. Galleries were on programs to buy every new release every month so they wouldn’t miss out on the latest Erté edition. Silkscreens, etchings, lithographs, sculptures, originals, multiples and unique paintings all sold to eager buyers. The discerning collector and savvy dealer always found something if they looked hard enough. Artexpo was viewed like the fashion/furniture trade shows where goods were affordable and interiors adorned. The early days of Artexpo were remarkable because it was literally made by the movers and shakers who created a market that had not previously existed, complete with artists who became international stars. As Artexpo rose in stature, the exhibition space became a premium. Artists with evolving international reputations moved up and out. With the exit of the big names to the higher end market, a new group of artists emerged ready to take their place and make their mark. Artexpo, by now an established international venue, filled the vacancies. In the changing new

CONT. market, artists like Marco Sassone, Orlando, Ting, Jang, Wilkinson, Rizzi, Britto, Delacroix, and others sold internationally to the Japanese and other international venues. Artexpo outgrew the Coliseum, moved to the Jacob Javits Center, and established a huge growth potential within the market. Eduard Nakhamkin brought his post-Glasnost artists to the floor; Rocky Aoki commissioned his Rolls Royce to be painted by Rick Garcia as an ode to wildlife conservation, and it was proudly displayed at Arica Hilton’s Golden Pearls booth. Noted celebrity collectors began to walk the floor—and exhibit their work— looking for acquisitions or fans to buy a painting, sculpture or print. Early celebs included Anthony Quinn, Tony Bennett, Buddy Ebsen and John Lennon, whose doodles were converted into magnificent fine art prints by Marilyn Goldberg and approved by Yoko with a chop stamp. An Artexpo era of museum shows and upscale openings evolved and expanded Artexpo into other cities. In Las Vegas, the wife of Michael Berk, producer of Baywatch, had her form fitting white pantsuit hand illustrated by Yuroz, who made a career out of doing same for any and all who cane to his booth for such a purpose. After-parties and wonderful dinners became the norm. Bertrand Delacroix’s bashes were not to be missed. You could always find a pastrami sandwich and side of cole slaw at Mark and Sheila Schachner’s booth, along with a great collection of Erté originals. It was a grand time to be at the International Artexpo, whether it was in San Francisco, Dallas, Las Vegas, Anaheim or New York City. Time marched along and Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, the esteemed publishing house that also owned many trade shows and magazines, now owned Artexpo. Bob Edgell is brought out retirement by a group of investors and former employees to take over Harcourt Brace Jovanovich. It was a big buy-out but in those days, junk bonds were king and financed the deal. Edgell was a visionary who spun off a Chicago art fair, and then rented the Miami Beach Convention Center for the very first Art Miami in 1991. Glen Engman and Orlando have sold out booths in Miami, never to return to Artexpo. The known top exhibitors of Artexpo begin to jockey for position in the Art Miami Market. During this transition, Smart Publishing, Samir Sammon, Romero Britto and a slew of Michel Roux’s stable of Absolut Artists launch their art reputations at Artexpo New York. George Rodrique was an Artexpo staple for a few years before his Blue Dog skyrocketed to worldwide fame and fortune. Alex Echo’s “LOVE LIFE LIVE SAFE” Absolut Billboard on Hollywood & Vine in Los Angeles brought light to the AIDS epidemic and caught the attention of David Rogath who immediately signed him up. Kerry Hallam was another Rogath discovery, who went from a sold out booth in the secondary Artexpo exhibition hall to top seller in one short year. A new tier of celebrated artists became Artexpo alumni. During these years, art jewelry, art glass, art-to-wear and other decor—

ARTEXPO NEW YORK TURNS 40! CONT. much of it coming from the Erté dealers—also spun from the floor as collectibles found homes. The era of big reserves of high demand limited editions ground to a halt with the advent of the giclee printer and the end of the art publishers’ need to make big investments in limited edition print inventories. The publishers and gallery chains, which had been the mainstay of Artexpo, gave way to the era of individual artists. Artists no longer needed to make a big investment nor get the backing of large enterprises or dealers to crack the market. Things had definitely changed. With Redwood Media Group’s takeover of Artexpo from Pfingsten Publishing in 2009, Artexpo was rejuvenated by the tireless energy of owner Eric Smith and his team. While there are still many galleries and some art publishers who exhibit, it is the [SOLO] independent artists who give the show energy. Individual artists of merit from all over the globe come to New York to enjoy the city and merge with savvy sophisticated and qualified buyers. Connections and sales are the goal and exhibitors arrange their own promotion, using the web and mailing lists, as well as connecting into Artexpo’s well-oiled public relations machine. And lifechanging opportunities do occur—after all, it is the Big Apple. A new era of collector has been born. Artexpo had become a known place, an important event for artists and the galleries catering to mid-range art. The growth opportunities presented to the individual artist propelled the market forward. Innovation became the byword and cutting edge art mingled with the traditional. Through economic crashes and booms, proliferation of competing art fairs and shows, distinction of market tiers, and plain old art world snobbery, Artexpo New York, like the blues, rolls on. The durability and fluidity of the buyers and sellers coupled with the leadership of Eric Smith and team keep it going. The show endures and thrives. It is a living, breathing organism. The energy is palpable on set-up day right up until the last hour on Sunday. Emerging and established, contemporary and traditional, galleries and artists are glad to have a place to strut their stuff in the art capital of the world, even if just for a few days. The saving grace of the Artexpo New York market place just may be that all you need is personal drive and a willingness to bet on yourself to make it. The great and celebrated history of Artexpo lives on in the art of Warhol, Robert Indiana, Vasarely, Peter Max and a few thousand others who precede this year’s hopefuls on the journey to fulfill their art dreams. Talent lives in the market place known as Artexpo New York, and one never knows who will be the next group of industry stars, the movers and shakers of the next decade of Artexpo New York history. Happy 40th Anniversary Artexpo New York!

METALLO GALLERY / CASSIDY WATT
Madrid, New Mexico Booth S521
Cassidy Watt is a metal artist and the owner of Metallo Gallery in Madrid, New Mexico. Watt began his career by attending his first of many Artexpo New York in 2003, as a gallery representative. Coming full circle, 2018 marks his triumphant return to Artexpo, but now as a gallery owner and celebrated artist in his own right. This transformation is reminiscent of his own work, wherein industrial metals–aluminum, copper, brass–experience a scathing journey to emerge anew, while still retaining their enduring character. In Watt’s words, “Metal forgives, but it never forgets.” The alchemy of Watt’s aesthetic finds its origin in New York, the industrial city of his youth, which transects the high desert mountains of his adult life. His metalwork twists and interlaces like the Brooklyn Bridge, but is weathered by caustic forces reminiscent of the New Mexican sun. His Remnants Totem Series is created by combining orphan pieces until the disparate parts yield a conversational whole, a living history. As Mr. Watt explains, “Metal yields, but it also endures, allowing each piece to tell its unique story. Contact. Cassidy Watt W. www.metallogallery.com E. cassidyw@mac.com

SPOTLIGHT PROGRAM SAMMOUN FINE ART
Quebec, Canada Booth 233
At his very first Artexpo New York in 1996, Samir Sammoun’s originality and unique style caught the attention of viewers, gallerists, collectors and art lovers. After that initial discovery in 1996, the response to his fresh colorful impressionistic style has continued to build over the 20+ years he has showcased his work at Artexpo. Depicting rich landscapes in his wonderfully unique impressionistic style, his paintings reflect a tranquil, happy mood. Clearly the artwork of a man who loves life, he says: “I try to make the person looking at my painting feel the color of the sky, the temperature of the air, and the breeze in the apple trees or the wheat stalks.” Sammoun’s subtle touch and rhythmic gesture with his brush, combined with his personal grace and spontaneity, seems to infuse each painting with his personal inspiration. VICTOR LYSAKOV FINE ART
Samir Sammoun
Pebble Beach, California Booth S313A
Born in Siberia, Victor Lysakov fell in love with painting at an early age and appreciated that he could communicate his thoughts, feelings, and emotions through art.His early career was as an engineer and a cog in the Soviet machine, although he never stopped creating his art. His paintings of life, rich, colorful, and full of metaphor, were not of the style of the state-sanctioned Social Realism. It was too bizarre, too personal. In the mid 1980’s, with Gorbachev’s Perestroika, for artists not sanctioned by the Communist regime, there were few places to show, and showing in unauthorized locations was forbidden. Lysakov and others founded ARBATR, the first independent artists’ union to be granted that status and the permission to exhibit work. Their first exhibition was approved by the authorities and opened to the public on December 31, 1986. The artists involved wanted to promote freedom of expression and a revolutionary approach to art. They embraced abstraction, new realism, conceptual art, and the trans avantgarde. Within a year, the Secretary of the Artists’ Union of the USSR, recommended that ARBATR lose its official status as an artists’ union and was denied further access to a showroom. After the dissolution of ARBATR, Victor found ways to show his work within the constrictions of the Soviet regime and, finally, outside the Soviet Union. Victor currently lives in Moscow, Russia, where he continues to create images that draw us into his world of dynamic composition, color, and story. Contact. ART LAB: STRANGER FRUIT
Location: [SOLO] Cafe
A
special exhibition, created by noted visual artist Jon Henry, Stranger Fruit’s thought-provoking images are the artist’s reflection on the black family—his own and the community at large. The images ask the questions: Who is next? Me? My brother? My friends? How do we protect these men? Lost in the furor of media coverage, lawsuits and protests is the plight of the mother, who is left to carry on without her child. Jon Henry captures mothers with their sons in their environment, reenacting what it must feel like to endure this pain. The mothers in the photographs have not lost their sons, but understand the reality—that this could happen to their family. The mother is also photographed in isolation, reflecting on the absence. When the trials are over, the protesters have gone home, and the news cameras are gone, the mother is left. Left to mourn, to survive.

Stranger Fruit was recently selected by Brooklyn’s noted Smack Mellon as a one of the 2017 Hot Picks and the project was also on the short list for the Lucie Foundation Grant, which promotes and nurtures the cultivation, promotion, and appreciation of Fine Art Photography worldwide. BUILDING YOUR ART COLLECTION BY ERIC SMITH
O
ver the past 30 years I’ve had the unique opportunity to work with thousands of artists, galleries and collectors, all of which have a common thread—a passion for art. Like any profession, you do it long enough and it all seems to come effortlessly. It in the art collecting world is how to identify the piece(s) for you, who to talk to, what to ask, knowing a fair price, and in the end deciding if you’re ready to purchase.
1. How to identify the piece for you.
There is a lot to see at Artexpo New York, with over 400 exhibitors and thousands of artworks, finding something you like is the first step. When my daughters were young, I would take them and their friends to the Cleveland Museum of Art for winter field trips. Quite often there would be 5 girls and me. We had a game we played. Enter one of the museum’s galleries, close your eyes, then I would say ”Open your eyes!” and I would count to ten. In that ten seconds, the girls had to pick their favorite piece and then tell me why they liked it. They would say, “I liked the colors, I would like to be in that place, it reminded me of a place I’ve been,” and so on. When the last one finished, we would run to the next gallery and play the game again. This continued for about an hour or two—or until the docents caught up to us running through the halls. The fun part was identifying objects, colors, scenes, places, textures and more. You could tell what each girl appreciated. Now, I don’t suggest you run from booth to booth at Artexpo, but I do hope you find a piece or two that really speaks to you. Don’t worry, you’ll know it when you see it. My favorite piece during our trips to the Cleveland Museum was always the same. The title is Gray and Gold by John Rogers Cox. I like the story behind it, the colors, I love nature and fields, and the detail is exceptional. (Insert small photo)
2. Who do I talk to? What should I ask?
This is an easy one—talk to the gallery owner, artist or consultant. Ask open ended questions. Can you tell me about this piece? How long does it take this artist to paint a single piece? What inspires him or her? Is there a story behind this artist? Did they study art at school? Have they had any auction results? You won’t have to ask this many questions. Just one or two and the conversation will be started. Most artists and gallerists are professional and know the tools of their trade; however, I like to be sold, I want them to tell me the story behind the art and the artist. I like the idea of being able to take that experience home and discuss my art with my dinner guests and share the stories told to me by the artist / gallerist.
Eric Smith
3. Is it a fair price?
The majority of works represented at Artexpo New York are priced from $1,000 to $25,000. You’ll be able to determine the success and ultimately the fair price of specific pieces after asking the questions above. Particularly relevant to the price will be: How long does it take to paint a single piece? And, tell me about the success of this artist? If it’s a new artist in our [SOLO] Pavilion, the artist is either considered emerging or fairly new on the scene. I find the [SOLO] Pavilion an exciting place to make new finds. You never know, you might be talking to the next Picasso.
4. Am I ready to purchase?
If you’re excited about the piece and you feel you’ve collected (no pun intended) all the information you need, it’s time to buy. Don’t second guess your decision, part of the fun of collecting is feeling confident about your new acquisition. Once you’ve made your purchases, head home, hang the art, pour a glass of wine and enjoy. Cheers to art collecting!
