WELCOME TO ARTEXPO NEW YORK 2019
F
or 41 years and counting, Artexpo New York has changed how people buy and sell art. This year, we underwent our own evolution as the show moved to Pier 90—and I couldn’t be more excited to finally welcome you here as we champion the transformative power of art. As you walk through aisle after aisle of innovative artwork—from paintings and prints to sculpture and photography—prepare to be captivated, delighted, surprised, maybe even shocked. Art is powerful. It challenges the status quo, changes our perceptions, and pushes us to see ourselves and others from a new perspective. Through its power, art transforms. Over the next four days, Artexpo New York will showcase over 250 exhibitors featuring hundreds of artists and their work. Don’t pass up the opportunity to step into the booths and talk to the artist or dealer. With live demonstrations happening throughout the show, you might even get the chance to watch as they work on their next masterpiece. Whether you’re shopping for a client, looking for the perfect piece for that special spot at home, or on the hunt for a gift, you’ll have access to thousands of artworks. When you’re not scouting for that hidden gem, stop by the Pier 90 Lounge to mix and mingle with collectors, gallery owners, architects, designers, and art dealers or listen and learn at our Topics & Trends education seminars, which offer expert perspectives on today’s most pressing industry challenges and the trends changing the way business is done. I’d like to give a special thanks to you, our fabulous attendees, for making this show a success year after year! We couldn’t do it without you. So go enjoy the show! It’s going to be an extraordinary weekend of fine art, design, originality, and the latest trends in the art world.
Sincerely, Eric Smith President, Redwood Media Group

LETTER FROM THE MAYOR
THE CITY OF NEW YORK OFFICE OF THE MAYOR NEW YORK, NY 10007
April 4, 2019
Dear Friends: It is a pleasure to welcome everyone to Pier 90 for the 41st Annual Artexpo New York. New York has long been at the forefront of advancements in all artistic disciplines, and we are the ideal home for the world’s largest fine arts trade show and marketplace, which brings together artists, gallerists, curators, dealers, publishers, collectors, and enthusiasts from the five boroughs and beyond. Guided by its theme [TRANSFORM], this year’s edition of Artexpo explores the transformative power of the arts through discussions and workshops with industry leaders, and more than 300 exhibitors displaying paintings, drawings, sculptures, ceramics, hand-blown glass, photography, and other works from emerging and established artists. Along with its [SOLO] and [FOTO SOLO] companion shows featuring independent artists and photographers, Artexpo will introduce attendees to different perspectives, innovative techniques, and talented professionals who are enriching this vital sector. I am delighted to applaud the organizers and supporters of this outstanding event that inspires New Yorkers and visitors of all backgrounds and exemplifies the boundless creativity and diversity that define our global city. On behalf of the City of New York, I offer my best wishes for a wonderful show and an enjoyable stay for all those visiting the five boroughs for this exciting exhibition. Sincerely,
Bill de Blasio Mayor

SPEAKER BIOS ALEXIS SILK Glass Sculpture Artist
Alexis Silk works in molten glass and metal to create figurative work that’s timeless yet thought-provoking. A student of human form, she combines close knowledge of anatomy with a passion for fire and an unquenchable thirst for meaning. Technically, Silk is pushing the boundaries of what is possible. Her glass figures are sculpted entirely freehand while the glass is hot on the end of a blowpipe or punty rod. With work ranging in scale to life-size torsos hanging in 6-foot-tall steel frames, her largest figures are close to half her body weight and take a team of six assistants to handle the glass while she sculpts it. For her cast metal pieces, she pours the molten bronze or iron. While making intrinsically beautiful objects, Silk explores issues of human nature, society, and the relationship of humans, nature, and industry. Her hanging figures, for example, are an eloquent exploration of objectification of the body. Steel frames represent conceptual boxes of perception that society puts us in. http://www.alexissilk.com/home.html ALLAN MCDONALD Photographer
For Allan McDonald, photography has always been a part of his life. In recent years, he has honed his skills photographing rare and wonderful things almost daily in the waters of Canada’s world famous Bay of Fundy. In all imaginable conditions of weather, light conditions and subject matter, he’s transfixed—camera in one hand, binoculars in the other. His abstract and closeup images artfully capture the complex, ever-evolving world of each ripple and wave, taking the viewer on an intimate and elemental visual journey that both awakens the mind and inspires the soul in a hidden life exploration of water at a micro-level that few, if any, have ever seen or considered. The driving force behind this new direction for him, in his own words: “Plain and simple, it’s all about the beauty!” https://allanmcdonaldimages.photoshelter.com BOB CLYATT Artist, Clyatt Sculpture
Bob Clyatt is known for conceptual contemporary installations with foundations in longstanding sculptural forms. His work explores issues of division, power, and reconciliation in the shared space of society. His work has been exhibited in shows from Santa Fe to New York, from Paris to Hong Kong, Italy and throughout the U.S. With sculptures in permanent museum collections and private collections around the world, his work continues to be highly sought-after. http://www.clyattsculpture.com Artexpo New York 2019

BRUCE ADAMS Publisher, Santa Fean magazine
With an art collection that started somewhere around junior high with a slew of unframed posters of various sports and music stars taped to the walls of his bedroom, it’s really no surprise that Bruce Adams found himself in Santa Fe, one of this country’s top destinations for art. As the publisher of Santa Fean magazine, he’s on the pulse of what’s happening in the city and with art. For the past 10 years, he has grown Santa Fean into the region’s leading print medium, a professional, top-quality, bi-monthly magazine about art, culture, dining, history, and lifestyle that reaches an affluent and informed readership in Santa Fe, nationally, and internationally. Today, by the way, all of his artwork is beautifully framed—and none of it is taped to the walls! http://www.santafean.com

Thanks to his extensive travels, Luca Bornoffi began to think more frequently about striking colors, pushed by the idea that some of these could somehow instill exhilaration, light-heartedness, escapism, and wellbeing. With these notions, he begins to convey his concepts on canvas—and his artistic journey began. Instinctively through his work, he tries to express the imperfections of life, utilizing colors as the ideological source of serenity and joy. http://www.lucabornoffi.com
MADDI RING Fine Art Photographer, New York Center for Photographic Art
Self-taught photographer Maddi Ring explains her work: “I have traveled to remote parts of the world seeking out unusual images of people, still life, landscape, and architecture. I use both color and monochromatic tonal range to reproduce the scene and set the mood. In addition, I work in image transfer to create a completely different watercolor effect and use digital manipulation on select images to produce tinted blackand-white images as well as fanciful color abstracts. The far reaches of the world have always intrigued me. The farther away from McDonald’s the better. In 2002, Patricia Gillman began to take photography seriously. It was that year that she acquired her first digital camera. Gillman explains further: “I had always used a good film camera for travel and family photos, but the digital camera changed the way in which I looked at photography, the way I composed a photograph. I really fell in love with the art and magic of photography through digital cameras. I have spent a great deal of time creating infrared photographs. PAUL CHRISTENER Fine Art Photographer, Paul Christener Photography
The idea behind In Search of Silence was born in 2014 during Paul Christener’s first stay in Greenland. Together with his wife, they trekked in complete solitude for weeks. There, he realized his deep need for silence. After that, he began to search for moments of silence. Christener is fascinated by gloomy views, by dark and heavy clouds, by cold water, and by huge snow walls. His preference is to work in soft light because there are no dark shadows or harsh highlights. He tries to incorporate fog, rain, and falling snow. As a result, a well-known or famous location is almost never in his work. He describes his work this way: “To locate such places is one thing; to be there at the right time is much more difficult. The success of my work relies on timing and a lot of luck. In all cases, my method of photography reduces life to what fits into my backpack.” https://www.christener.ch
PHIL CARRIERE Fine Art Photographer, Phil Carriere Photography
In the constant quest for learning, Phil Carriere is continually pushing limits. He is a self-taught photographer and graphic designer who graduated in cabinet making. He worked for over 18 years in the field of printing and woodworking. His passion for design and art brought him to photography. It is curiosity and devotion to different printing technologies and the wide variety of materials that motivates him to discover unique and remarkable finishing processes. A real explorer who is open-minded, Carriere’s passions come to life in his art. Here, woodworking meets photography. http://www.philcarriere.ca
RICHARD BINHAMMER Fine Art Photographer, Binhammer Photographs
Richard Binhammer began pursuing photography in 1994 at the time of his move to the United States. A self-taught photographer, his primary focus was originally black-and-white and color film photography. He now uses a converted digital camera to capture infrared black-and-white images and does his own postproduction and fine art printing. As he explains: “While it is common to base notions of photographic art on capturing that decisive moment, I prefer to think about
the photograph as a means of creative expression that is more than just a moment. The image is composed in a manner that turns the familiar into something more. The things we often take for granted have the potential to become a dream and a place where the mind may venture—a journey. The captured moment of reality becomes a place to explore, a path to realization, a spot of quiet solitude, rather than just a specific time and locale.” https://binhammerphotographs.com

SPEAKER BIOS CONT. SHIMA SHANTI Artist, Peace Waters Gallery
Shina Shanti paints with beeswax and fire, the ancient art form called encaustic. Her impressionistic paintings of sea and sky are inspired by the natural elements. She patiently applies as many as 30 layers of molten wax, pigment, and resin onto wood; each layer is fused with heat. Combining bold and roughyet-refined texture with satin-smooth finishes that appear both translucent and opaque creates a depth of luminosity that draws the viewer into her art. Shanti’s conventional upbringing in rural Montana forever connected her with the natural environment, giving her an innate sense of color and composition. She is both humbled and inspired by the patrons who have acquired her paintings as well as the many galleries across the country who carry her work. https://shimashanti.com

JBIS ART CELEBRATES 10TH ANNIVERSARY AT ARTEXPO NEW YORK 2019 Determination, drive, and creativity are key components that can make an artist successful. Finding the avenues to create an art career can often be the challenging stumbling block. It was 2009 when Jeffrey Bisaillon first decided being in an art show might give him and his art the exposure and lift needed to catapult his art career dreams. Artexpo New York 2010 was the show, and with a small [SOLO] booth, he leaped onto the global art scene. Sure, it was New York—the heart of the American art market—but his art was distinctive and he was confident it would get noticed. Getting ready to celebrate his 10th Artexpo New York in April 2019 with a booth in the main Artexpo Pavilion, he still exudes a quiet confidence. Maybe even more so given that he is now represented by galleries across the globe, has a long list of art influencers as collectors, and designers, architects and decorators consistently seek out his work. And there’s a new wrinkle to Jbis Art. The newest Jbis Art Collection, a creative collaboration between Jeffrey and his brother Michael, debuted at Spectrum Miami in December and sold out at the show. It’s no surprise then that we wanted to know more about what was happening with the new direction and collection and how they were preparing for this year’s New York show. Here’s what they told us: Art Business News: Let’s start at the beginning. When did you first become involved with art? JBIS: Jbis Art has always been the vision of both of us, Jeffrey and Michael. While we have been producing art for over 20 years in many genres, we have also endeavored in other careers. Jeffrey has been both a baker and a contractor; Michael a graphic designer. It was in 1996, while living Artexpo New York 2019

JBIS CONT. together in a house in Austin, that we decided to create some art to hang on the bare walls. And the artful collaboration began. ABN: Tell us the evolution of your art from the past until today. What’s different today than what you imagined when you turned art into your career?
Ali by The Bisaillon Brothers
The Bisaillon Brothers
Jimi by The Bisaillon Brothers
JBIS: Jeffrey has always been intrigued with the abstract and has been painting abstracts for many years. Michael has always connected with symbology and thematic elements in pop art. In 2010, at that first Artexpo, Jeffrey showed his Modern Simplicity Series, which was a deviation from everything he had done previously. He set out to develop a series that was extremely modern, a perfect fusion of art and design. It gained traction and led to the Modern Visage Series, which utilized the idea of cut-outs or cutting through the three-dimensional space of the Modern Simplicity Series. Modern Visage also gave homage to iconic people or brands that we all admire and hold deeply. As work on the Modern Visage Series continued, ideas began to emerge involving Jeffrey’s love of the abstract and his keen eye toward modern art and design paired with Michael’s love of symbology and the digital art process. Every idea and style of art the brothers have had a passion for would come to fruition and pave the way for the creation of the POP Collection. We like to explain it this way: Before photography, artists painted the world around them. After photography was invented, there was no longer a need to document the world with art, which allowed a major boost in the creativity of artistic works. With the invention of the digital process, art is once again undergoing a massive evolution that is taking creativity to an even higher level. We believe artists should use all of the amazing tools available today and combine them with the processes from the past. Incorporating the digital process is the main difference in Jbis Art

Artexpo New York 2019
JBIS CONT. today that neither of us could have imagined at the beginning. ABN: What inspires your work? Where do your ideas come from? An artist, a culture, a period of time? JBIS: Our grandfather was a phenomenal landscape and wildlife painter, and his brother was an illustrator. Art runs deep in our family; art classes were always our favorite classes in school. We are both inspired by Jean Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol. Jean Michel’s unparalleled creativity and use of symbology and social commentary in his pieces was simply amazing. As a leading figure in the pop art movement, Andy’s use of branding and celebrity has obviously had a big influence on us. At the current moment, we are heavily inspired by the pop culture history of today and the mid-20th century. Some of the things that inspire our art pieces are:
Liz by The Bisaillon Brothers
• The human obsession with the material world as it relates to branding and imagery of that which we admire and hold most deeply in our lives • The need of current society to search for acceptance and validation through our phones and via social media • Iconic images of people and events that prevail in our shared perception of the world around us ABN: Tell us about working together. How did that begin and what success have you had together based on the collaboration? JBIS: We both have our strengths, and when we collaborate and produce pieces together, they are so much better than either of us working alone. Our exhibition at Spectrum Miami this past December was our first sold-out show to date and the first Artexpo New York 2019

Modern Simplicity by The Bisaillon Brothers
JBIS CONT. show where we exhibited the POP Collection and marketed ourselves fully as the Bisaillon Brothers. We also now have an international following for the POP Collection, with many pieces being exhibited currently in the Netherlands and Great Britain. ABN: Why the POP Collection? What is the process? How did you come to discover the process and what draws you to it?
Vj Day by The Bisaillon Brothers
JBIS: While working together on the Modern Visage Series, we began to envision a body of work that was more than a new series but an entire collection that incorporated all of the artistic strengths each could bring to the table. This new collection incorporates many mediums, technologies, and procedures. After more than a year of refinement, this process has evolved to combine acrylic painting on hard panel and canvas, mixed media, digital photography, and graphic design. At the same time the new collection was emerging, we realized that art in general was evolving past traditional norms and that exciting new digital technologies were going to define art of the future. Realizing digital art on its own is not as compelling as the organic nature of paint on canvas, a new process was needed and this idea fueled us in creating the multilayered, mixed media approach of the exciting new POP Collection. ABN: What are your plans and goals, both immediate and for the future?
Off the Wall by The Bisaillon Brothers
JBIS: Currently the POP Collection is our primary focus. With over 30 pieces in the collection produced to date, we have many ideas and plans to make it more unique and brilliant. And, of course, there will be new pieces ready for our 10th-anniversary show at Artexpo New York 2019 this April! For more information on the POP Collection, visit www. jeffreybisaillon.com or visit them at Booth 430.

ANNA VOLOSHKO SCULPTURES
Kiev, Ukraine Booth 1027
The quirky and unique bronze sculptures of Anna Voloshko lift the heart and touch the soul. Ranging in style from steampunk to modern and grotesque to classic, all of Voloshko’s works are united in their expressive sense of personality and animation. There is a delightful nostalgic feeling to Voloshko’s pieces as if they capture the charm of bygone eras or stories frozen in time. In fact, one of Voloshko’s main goals in her work is to eschew what she sees as the impersonal, utilitarian, and technologically overrun modern world in favor of subjects that she believes will offer energy, peace, and comfort to her viewers. Voloshko says that no matter what, her work reflects her experiences, emotions, and relationships, as well as her philosophical view of the world. She wants her art to help viewers discover a moment where they can reconnect with themselves and God. Born in Ukraine, Voloshko currently works as a sculptor in Kiev. Voloshko was recognized as one of Top Artists of 2015 by Art Business News and her sculptures have been exhibited and can be found in private collections all around the world.

JOSY BRITTON FINE ART
Grand Bend, Ontario, Canada Booth 400
Josy Britton decided she was an artist in kindergarten. In 1979, Britton graduated from Waterloo University with an honors Bachelor in Fine Art. Britton lives in an oak savannah forest adjacent to the Pinery Provincial Park with her husband, Gord. Their growing family enjoys being together, especially canoe-tripping in the wilderness. Britton is constantly inspired by miracles in nature and compelled to paint and share her eyes’ interpretation with others. Although nature is the inspiration for Britton’s work, sunlight is the primary subject of her paintings. Britton paints sunlight’s effects on color. Her watercolor paintings are created using an original technique of dividing the paper’s surface into jewels of transparent color that overlap to create more color fragmentation. Her watercolors on Yupo are painted in a subtractive technique Britton developed. Currently, Britton has been painting an encaustic series. When you understand Britton’s paintings, it will change the way you see when you walk a forest trail or travel a river. Her paintings have hung in over 95 juried shows and solo shows in regional and commercial galleries in Southwestern Ontario and across Canada.

Anja Struck Islands of Light Touching My Face by Anja Struck
Anja Struck is living and working as an independent artist in Lueneburg, Germany. She is working out of her own art studio. Her medium is oil on canvas. The Hamburg native studied painting, earning a bachelor’s in art education, graphics, and design, and she completed additional studies with the renowned painter and sculptor Markus Lüpertz in 2010. Struck’s paintings are figurative and focus on people in the game of light, shadow, and movement. Life is on the move, flowing, and dynamic. To illustrate that, she blurs the contours. Struck has been working over 20 years as a freelance artist and has presented her works at numerous solo and group exhibitions in Germany, Austria, Poland, Turkey, and China.
Betty Schmidt
The artist Alberto Giacometti expresses in words exactly what Betty Schmidt feels in abstract gestural photography: “I see something, I find it wonderful, I want to give it back. Whether I am unsuccessful, whether it succeeds, becomes unimportant. Whether I preempt by failing, or if I advance by success, it is a personal gain for me.”
Light and Shadow by Betty Schmidt
For Schmidt, photography is a kind of language with which she wants to express her thoughts and feelings, not the outer reality. Real, objectified, banished their imagination. All memories of all-too concrete are extinguished as soon as they press the trigger of the camera. She uses the fraction of a second to take pictures with her full body. Body and camera are one and are her tools to create a new image of what is seen, something that lies between the moments, something that never comes back.
Suzanne Kolmeder
Suzanne Kolmeder, born in 1962, worked alongside her artistic work as a copywriter in an agency and was editor-in-chief of a publishing house before she finally became independent in Stuttgart in 2011 as a freelance artist. After experiments with different techniques and materials, she now works exclusively with acrylic paint on canvas, acrylic glass, and glass. Among other things, Kolmeder’s abstract images are created by applying countless layers of acrylic, and there is always a picture behind the picture before the actual vision of the picture takes shape. This technique and the partially reflective colors bring the works to life and relive them from different perspectives.
Deep Networks - Matrix No. 17 by Suzanne Kolmeder
The three-dimensionality created by the layers allows the viewer to dive deep into the images. Imagination lets you discover figures that transform the image and evoke individual interpretations.

Patricia Gillman
In 2002, Patricia Gillman began to take photography seriously. It was that year that she acquired her first digital camera. Gillman explains further: “I had always used a good film camera for travel and family photos, but the digital camera changed the way in which I looked at photography, the way I composed a photograph. I really fell in love with the art and magic of photography through digital cameras. “But I wanted to do more with my images so I began to do alternative processes, she continues. “I started with Polaroid transfers, moved on to painting my photos, and now have produced note cards and coasters made from my photographs and original watercolor paintings. “I have spent a great deal of time creating infrared photographs. The panoramic photograph has become easier to do now that there are cameras that photograph panoramas. This is what I use. One gets the most amazing shots just moving the camera left to right or down to up.” Her work includes collections dedicated to the infrared, plus panoramic, flora and fauna, and the countries she has visited.
Maddi Ring
Self-taught photographer Maddi Ring explains her work: “I have traveled to remote parts of the world seeking out unusual images of people, still life, landscape, and architecture. I use both color and monochromatic tonal range to reproduce the scene and set the mood. In addition, I work in image transfer to create a completely different watercolor effect and use digital manipulation on select images to produce tinted black-and-white images as well as fanciful color abstracts. “The far reaches of the world have always intrigued me,” she continues. “The farther away from McDonalds the better. These images are my impressions and creations from my own neighborhood to the depths of the third world.”

SPOTLIGHT PROGRAM OTHER ARTISTS
Annette Schreiber
A photographer with an eye for the architectural, Annette Schreiber creates works that make the most of the atmospheric potential in photography. Her photographs often observe high-rises, finding a surreal, sparse reality in familiar angles. Schreiber revels in negative space, letting the natural gradients of light in each urban landscape overtake her compositions. Even when the subjects of a photograph are rigid and linear, Schreiber transforms them into distorted, atmospheric objects that set their own patterns of wood, glass, and steel against the subtle swathes of sky. Much of Schreiber’s work is black and white, allowing the contrast between light and dark to be the focus. More than documentary, Schreiber’s works use a moody blend of grays, towering architecture, and silhouetted trees to convey emotion. Imbued with the photographer’s own feelings, each image communicates a tone beyond its subject matter. Born in Germany, Schreiber began photographing as a child. Since earning her master’s degree in photography in 2000, Schreiber has interpreted the world through her camera lens with a unique eye toward the sentiment behind the image. She recently won two categories and received an honorable mention in the 10th Pollux Awards.
Douglas Collins
Douglas Collins was born in 1941 in Detroit, Michigan. He trained in math, engineering, and design. He has worked in cinema and architecture. He is active in cameraless photography and printmaking in both New York and California and has been a teacher at Manhattan Graphics and the International Center of Photography.
Joseph Siebert
Joseph Siebert is a photographer specializing in images of the natural world. Nazare #3 by Douglas Collins
Scot J. Wittman
Scot J. Wittman has spent most of his life on the East Coast of the United States. He shoots his studio work in his factory residence in Philadelphia and travels as often as possible to shoot on location. To date, he has been to 36 countries. From fall to spring, he teaches all levels of photography at Rutgers Preparatory School, the first independent school of New Jersey, where he is also the chair of the Visual Art Department and dean of all the arts: visual, music, drama, and dance. His passions and professions are threefold in the areas of art production, art pedagogy, and Frisbee golf.
Susan Chamberland
Susan Chamberland’s father told her as a young woman, “No one can see like you.” At the time, she thought nothing of the comment. Chamberland has been taking photographs specializing in color-massing studies inspired by a trip to Bermuda in the 1980s. The mystery of color and shape are her favorite subjects. Micro-influenced subjects are a major focus in her work. Details, texture, and obscure shapes permeate her photographs. The element of surprise, coupled with an incongruous title, incorporate the experience of what Chamberland portrays in her photographs. Chamberland earned a Bachelor of Science in design and resource management from the University of Connecticut. She is an associate member of the Connecticut Academy of Fine Art. She has been an elected artist member of the Essex Art Association, Essex, Connecticut, for 22 years where she held the office of president. Bubbles by Susan Chamberland

SPOTLIGHT PROGRAM PEACE WATERS FINE ART
San Diego, California Booth 285
Shima Shanti, inspired by spirit and nature, paints with beeswax and fire. She juxtaposes bold texture that is rough yet refined with a sublime neutral tone and hue that appear to span spiritual dimensions. Her use of native and vintage elements in contemporary design blurs the boundaries of culture and dissolve records of time. What is left to the viewer is the feeling of being in this world but not of it, the feeling of unifying oneness of peace. Shanti’s work appears ethereal, nonetheless firmly grounded. This along with her unyielding acceptance of the imperfect is reflected in her work. Shanti’s conventional upbringing, in contrast with her spiritual and existential understanding, is revealed in captivating depth in both her artwork and published books. Similar to life—every layer of beeswax and each moment in time are fused behind and before, creating life’s journey. As Shanti says: “Witnessing the spontaneous expression in an artist’s work deepens one’s own self-awareness and reveals both the artist’s and beholder’s unique perception of reality. This is the gift of art.” Surge by Shima Shanti

THE ARTS CREATE JOBS, GENERATE BUSINESS & DRIVE TOURISM. $166.3
Did you know the nonprofit arts & culture industry creates billion in economic activity and supports 4.6 million
jobs?
Arts and culture organizations boost local economies across our country. Whether it’s attending a music festival downtown, an evening at a theater or a different arts activity altogether, money spent on dinner, parking, dessert–even the babysitter–impacts the economic health of our communities.
ARTS & CULTURE SUPPORT OUR COMMUNITIES. NEW ARTS & ECONOMIC PROSPERITY STUDY SHOWS HOW.
