DUCHAMPIAN POSTMODERN CONCEPTUAL ART THEORY IS A HOAX “The anti-retinal / conscious mind - concept driven theory of art championed by the status quo elite has dominated contemporary art culture in the United States for the past 50 years. This theory that justifies and supports the foundation for the era of Postmodernism is totally false.” George Sakkal, 2011 Artist, educator, writer and research analyst George Sakkal will provide evidence adapted and applied from the fields of cognitive psychology and neuroscience discoveries, made since 1980, to prove conclusively that Marcel Duchamp’s Postmodern conceptual – anti-retinal theory of art is bogus. You are encouraged to attend Sakkal’s revolutionary, thought provoking presentation, “The Problem with Postmodern Art Theory: The Visual versus the Conceptual”. This lecture will be held on Saturday, March 26, 2011, at 2:00 p.m. on Stage # 1. This lecture will reveal the myth of Duchamp’s theory and advance in its place the Human Creative Response, and initiate the art movement, CUVISM, Cognitive Unconscious Visualism. You are invited to visit him at his Solo Booth # S 266 to view cuvistic, unconscious mind inspired collage art, typified by the work, “Ascending a Staircase” shown right. GeorGe Sakkal: Booth NumBer. Welcome to Artexpo New York 2011, the 33rd annual Artexpo! On the heels of last year’s successful show, we’re back for an even bigger and better fine art expo at Pier 94, New York City’s esteemed Art & Design Pier. This year, as always, you’ll see a wide range of exhibiting artists, galleries and publishers from around the world. We’re hosting talented painters, sculptors, mixed media artists and more from over 30 counties; read more about our international exhibitors on page 62. In our ongoing endeavors to support artists, industry professionals and fine art buyers everywhere, we’ve just released the Beta launch of ArtexpoStudio.com, an online marketplace where talented artists and galleries can showcase their works—and where art enthusiasts and industry professionals can have easy access to innovative new art. Read more on page 80 and be sure to stop by the Artexpo Studio booth, #S100. Topical, timely Education Seminars continue to be a big part of Artexpo New York, as you’ll see from our lineup of free lectures and workshops on page 30. Industry professionals are warmly invited to enjoy expert perspectives on art marketing, current trends, social media and more, with a host of savvy speakers including our Keynote Speaker, internet entrepreneur Jeff Pulver, and Peregrine Honig, the sociopolitical artist that claimed second place in Bravo TV’s “Work of Art: The Next Great Artist.” In the spirit of giving back to the NYC community, Artexpo will be teaming with Free Arts NYC again, to help under-served children to realize their fullest potential through the arts. From 9 a.m.-noon on Saturday, March 26, renowned actress and artist Jane Seymour will team up with NYC youth and Free Arts NYC to paint an Andy Warhol-inspired mural. 10% of door sales throughout Artexpo will go to Free Arts NYC, and many exhibitors are donating 5% of their sales (look for the “Proud Free Arts NYC Supporter” signs in exhibitors’ booths). Read more on page 72. There’s much more in store at this year’s Artexpo— from our updated iPhone app to live performance art. It’s an honor to host you—enjoy the show! Sincerely, Eric Smith, Artexpo CEO

Mr. Barnett brings 30 years of executive management experience to IAMG. He is a Time-Warner published author; has hosted television shows in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom; and has been the onair host for numerous trade and training media communication programs.
Jeff Pulver’s keynote will address “The Birth of the Back Channel and the Rise of the ‘Connected Me’.” He will discuss how the advent of the real-time web is changing the face of business as we know it. This change is non-discriminatory and touches many business sectors, including artists and gallery owners. Pulver believes that artists and gallery owners have the opportunity and the obligation to listen to what is being said about them and their artists by the community of people who represent their customers.
Patricia Brintle
There is an opportunity for artists/gallery owners to listen, connect, share and engage their customers using the social web. And chances are, if they are not currently engaging their customers in social communications, one of their competitors soon will be. Anyone interested in social media should attend this session.
Haitian-born artist Patricia Brintle’s style reflects her native land. Her colors are bright, vivid and vibrant and she uses much symbolism in her work. Although her subjects are varied, she leans toward the historical and religious. Brintle’s works on the Holocaust hang at the Holocaust Center of Temple Judea in New York; her religious work “The First Mother” traveled with the Black Madonna Exhibit to museums throughout the US; and her work on nuclear disarmament, “A Delicate Balance,” won the “Images of Peace” national competition and hangs at the Albert Schweitzer museum in Hamden, Connecticut. Last year Patricia formed an NGO called From Here To Haiti, Ltd. whose goal is to help repair churches and create murals in poverty-stricken Haiti. Since she formed From Here To Haiti, Ltd., 50% of all her sales are donated to the cause.

Each specific time period reveals its own historical categories of Architecture, Art, Motifs, Patterns, Color, Textiles, Picture Frames and the “Overall Design Influence.” Just as Custom Framers and Interior Designers have a direct influence on the places and spaces we occupy, much of their ability stems from continual research within specific periods in design. From color to culture, these creative individuals have the proven ability to combine art and engineering to the final form of spatial design. The course delivery is interactive and participative, and each participant gets actively involved with each of the Periods of Design.

Keynote Speaker VoIP Pioneer and Internet Entrepreneur Jeff Pulver The Birth of the Back Channel: The Real-Time Web & How It’s Changing How We’re Doing Business 9:00AM, Friday, March 25
Interested in taking your business to the next level? Be sure to catch our Keynote Address with Jeff Pulver, chairman and founder of pulver.com, at 9 a.m. on Friday, March 25th in the Education Pavilion. An influential thought-leader on the Real-Time Web, Pulver will deliver a talk entitled “The Birth of the Back Channel: The Real-Time Web and How It’s Changing How We’re Doing Business.” “There’s an evolving backchannel that art professionals need to embrace. Today’s web-based ecosystems are all changing. It’s not ‘we the people’ it’s ‘me, the people.’ We are all connected ‘me’s.’ Now Media is a fusion of the best of old media and new media. People’s reaction to content is what creates momentum. Twitter, YouTube, Facebook and other social media channels allow it to spread. To become a new media mogul, you need to figure out how to create Now Media moments. If you do, you’ll own the future and ensure your success. Real-time web is the catalyst.”
40
Pulver believes that artists and gallery owners have the opportunity and the obligation to listen to what is being said about them and their artists by the community of people who represent their customers. There is an opportunity for artists/gallery owners to listen, connect, share and engage their customers using the social web. And chances are, if they are not currently engaging their customers in social communications, one of their competitors soon will be. Pulver calls himself “a habitual entrepreneur who likes to start Internet communications companies.” He is known globally as someone who helped popularize the use of Voice over IP (VOIP) and is the co-founder of Vonage. In 2009 he created the global #140 Characters Conferences, which explores the emerging real-time Internet. Anyone interested in social media should definitely attend this session!

Special Guest Guest Lecture by Socio-political Artist & Reality TV Star Peregrine Honig Unlimited Edition: Publishing New Media 4:00PM, Saturday, March 26
Peregrine will also participate in the following panel discussion: “Marketing 101: What They Didn’t Teach You in Art School.” Artexpo’s 2011 Education Series will feature a not-tobe-missed presentation by renowned socio-political artist Peregrine Honig. Don’t miss Peregrine’s talk, entitled “Unlimited Edition: Publishing New Media,” 4 p.m. at the Education Pavilion on Saturday, March 26.
“I’m interested in the relationship between popular culture, sexual vulnerability, social anxieties, and the ethics of luxury and trends in consumerism. My work asks important questions about who we are and the flexibility of what is acceptable through media, medicine, class and contemporary court cases. I enjoy recontextualizing familiar images and objects, using whimsy and surprise to define the grey areas in conflict.”
Honig’s second-place win on Bravo TV’s first season of Work of Art: The Next Great Artist televised her ideas and work into the national pop culture spotlight. Over a decade ago, she made a name for herself when a set of her prints were purchased by the Whitney Museum of American Art, establishing Peregrine as the youngest living artist to be included in the permanent collection. Her public projects, sculptures, imagery, and texts explore themes of cultural vulnerability, trends in sexuality, disease and social hierarchies.

To date, Honig’s work is part of the permanent collections of the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University, the National Museum of Women in the Arts, and The Chicago Art Institute among others. She has had solo exhibits in Santa Fe, Kansas City, and Chicago, and has shown in group exhibitions in New York and across the globe. Peregrine is a recipient of the Art Omi International Artists’ Residency and the Charlotte Street Fund. She recently released Widow, a one-time limited edition faux fashion magazine in collaboration with Landfall Press, which explores the relationship between fashion and art. Chanel Masai

Peregrine Honig has curated internationally reviewed shows and annual events under the umbrella “Fahrenheit” for fourteen years and has owned a lingerie boutique called “Birdies” for eight years.

presence at Artexpo New York, and this year is no exception. Artion Galleries (Greece), Galeria Quorum (Spain) and Mécénavie (France) are just a few of this year’s notto-be-missed European exhibitors. Returnexhibitor Svenska Konstgalleriet of Sweden will also be joining us again, showcasing a selection of current works by Swedish and international artists.
South American art is once again in abundance at this year’s Artexpo. From Argentina, Nazli Kalayci Art Dealer will be promoting the works of contemporary Argentine artists and art dealers; returning exhibitor Brazilian Group will showcase fine art by today’s up and coming Brazilian artists.
This year, as always, we’re hosting a diverse range of talented artists and gallery owners who have traveled far and wide to exhibit at Artexpo. For the second year in a row, we’ll be joined by the Chinese Cultural Promotional Society (CCPS), displaying some of China’s most celebrated artists from the avant-garde Beijing 798 Art District and the Song Zhuang Art District, as well as from Shanghai and Shandong. “This is the perfect show for introducing our top Chinese artists to the international art market,” said Gu Wencan, Vice President of the CCPS Arts & Exhibition Committee. “In addition to bringing more artists from China to the U.S., we hope to host Artexpo in China in 2012.”
Anita Lindwall Ståhle / Svenska Konstgalleriet
First-time exhibitor Margaret Rose Fine Art will be traveling from New Zealand to exhibit at Artexpo New York 2011. Blending tradition with innovation, Margaret incorporates her ancestral Maori weaving with techniques of contemporary painting and mixed media design. Return-exhibitor ART-KVARTAL joins us from Russia, specializing in works of art that have both absorbed the tradition of Russian realism and reflect current trends in the avant-garde and postmodern movements. According to gallery management, “The main concept and the target of ART-KVARTAL is to keep up with the times, but not to lose sense in this race, to keep the best traditions of Russian art and be the conductors of the new trends and ideas of contemporary art as well.” ART-KVARTAL recently opened a gallery in Phoenix to better serve U.S. customers. From Kazakhstan, we have poet and artist Andrey Noda, who claimed the country’s
national award for Visual Arts in 2003. Xu Jie / CCPS
South of China, we have Gallery Archana joining us from Malaysia. Gallery Archana showcases the works of talented contemporary artists from Malaysia and India, in mediums ranging from ceramics and paintings to sculpture, lithography and photography. Be sure to stop by their booth and see what they have to offer. From Japan, we’ll be hosting award-winning illustrator Takahisa Hashimoto. European art has always had a strong
An extraordinary selection of contemporary fine art from the continent of Africa will be on display from countries including Nigeria, Gambia and South Africa. Omenka Gallery of Nigeria will be exhibiting for the first time this year. Through solo exhibitions, group shows and large themed exhibitions, Omenka Gallery of Nigeria aims to “examine in an experimental and research-minded way, modern and contemporary art developments and discourses in Nigeria.”
Andrey Noda
And while we’re taking a tour of our international exhibitors, let’s not forget our neighbors to the north. Nearly 50 of this year’s exhibitors hail from Canada, coast to coast, including Feel My Art Bisson Art of Quebec and and Andrey Pingachev of British Columbia. Once again, Progressive Fine Art of Ontario will have a large presence, showcasing original works in a wide variety of media.

Our international and overseas guests are too numerous to list here in their entirety, but we’d like to extend them all a very warm welcome!

Industry Profiles—Leaders in the Fine Art Marketplace This year, Artexpo New York celebrates 33 years of collaboration with the fine art community and art enthusiasts from around the globe. Over the years, we have seen many changes in the art world—to name just a few: the advent of online marketing and social media; stock market fluctuations; the rise of the global fine art market. Succeeding in today’s changing marketplace requires innovation, adaptability and persistence. We’d like to take a moment to recognize some of Artexpo’s longest-running exhibitors, all of whom exemplify the determination—and above all, the talent—to not only survive, but to thrive.

Since its inception in 2001, Studio Fine Art has been a publisher that operates with the goal of building a bond between a viewer and an image. Announcing the Beta Launch of ArtexpoStudio.com A State-of-the-Art Marketplace for Artists and Galleries At Artexpo, we make it our mission to help talented artists gain exposure, increase revenues and grow their businesses. That’s why we’ve just launched the Beta version of ArtexpoStudio.com, a state-of-the-art online marketplace for artists & galleries. Think of ArtexpoStudio.com as a year-round Artexpo—an online community where talented artists and galleries can gain showcase their works, and where art enthusiasts and industry professionals can have easy access to innovative new art. Here’s what our CEO, Eric Smith, has to say about the new site: “ArtexpoStudio.com is not only a fine art retail site, it’s the new go-to destination for artists, galleries and publishers looking for solid information and tools to grow their businesses in today’s rapidly changing fine art marketplace. “At the Artexpo offices, we get calls every day from people seeking innovative ways to gain exposure and get their work to market. ArtexpoStudio.com equips artists and galleries with the tools they need to navigate the art industry, present their work professionally and increase revenues, while giving art enthusiasts and professionals easy access to their work.”
q A Must-Attend Seminar for Artists & Gallery Owners! “Introducing Artexpo Studio: What Can Artexpo Studio Do for You?” Stage 2/ 9:00 AM/Saturday With: Robert Reeder, Eric Smith, Dale Stephens and Milo Winningham In today’s fine art market, there are few reliable sources that help artists position themselves for a successful career. At ArtexpoStudio.com, we’re devoted to empowering artists through marketing tools, technology and education. Artists and gallery owners: learn more about how Artexpo Studio can help you to gain exposure, market your work, and connect with the international fine art community.
At ArtexpoStudio.com, artists are given their own online gallery and secure shopping cart, from which they can sell both originals and museum-quality fine art reproductions—without any monthly fees. Artists retain full rights and can manage their own profits with ease. What sets ArtexpoStudio. com apart from other fine art websites is that it also offers an unprecedented level of image quality control: all works represented online are professionally archived in Artexpo Studio’s state-of-the-art Digital Archiving Studio. “Many websites offer artists a platform to upload and showcase their works, but quality control issues run rampant,” says Robert Reeder, President of Artexpo Studio. “Artists are uploading files that vary widely in quality. Common issues range from insufficient lighting to lack of focus and inadequate resolution. Artists who may have perfectly accurate digital files of their work suffer when their images are being sold beside poor-quality images. Artexpo Studio has solved the quality control dilemma. Our fine art Digital Archiving services are on par with—and in many cases, surpass—systems employed by the world’s finest museums. Moreover, Artexpo Studio’s Digital Archives are the reason the company’s Master-Quality Fine Art Reproductions are a cut above the rest. ” Get answers to all your questions about ArtexpoStudio.com during “Introducing Artexpo Studio: What Can Artexpo Studio Do for You?”, a not-to-be-missed panel discussion to be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 26, in our Education Pavilion.
“Artexpo Studio offers superb quality giclées, professional staff, excellent services and very reasonable costs. It is hard to tell the difference between the original and prints.” —Yuming Zhu “The clarity, the details, the colors, everything about those fine art reproductions was outstanding. I never saw any others as good.” —Richard Riverin “The qualities of your photographing, color balancing and digital printing are simply wonderful.” —Steve Horan

About Tim Tim Gagnon was born in Northern Maine and took an interest in painting at an early age. As a college student, he enrolled in the University of Maine at Presque Isle, but left in favor of working for a tax software company. A year later, he went back to school, this time majoring in art and studying under Anderson Giles. After obtaining his BFA, he decided to quit his job in the tax software industry and began to paint full time. Today, he is a full-time artist and couldn’t be happier. Congrats again, Tim, and thanks to all who entered their work in the Artexpo Artist Challenge!

Artist Highlight The M.C. Escher Company B.V.
Bond of Union
Booth: 851A, 853A
Artexpo is honored to host The M.C. Escher Company B.V. at Artexpo New York 2011. Iconic Dutch artist Maurits Cornelis Escher (1898-1972) is one of the world’s most famous graphic artists. It’s easy to recognize in his work an extraordinary visualization of mathematical principles; Escher drew great inspiration from mathematical ideas.
Bird/Fish
Escher is most famous for his so-called “impossible structures,” such as “Ascending and Descending,” “Relativity,” his Transformation Prints, such as “Metamorphosis I,” “Metamorphosis II” and “Metamorphosis III,” “Sky & Water I” and “Reptiles.” The artist also created some wonderful, more realistic pieces when he lived and traveled in Italy.
During his lifetime, Escher made 448 lithographs, woodcuts and wood engravings and over 2,000 drawings and sketches. Like some of his famous predecessors—Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Dürer and Holbein—M.C. Escher was left-handed. Born in Leeuwarden, the Netherlands, Escher was the fourth and youngest son of a civil engineer. When Escher was five years old, the family moved
86
to Arnhem, where Escher spent most of his youth. He eventually enrolled in the School for Architecture and Decorative Arts in Haarlem. After only one week, he informed his father that he would rather study graphic art than architecture. After finishing school, Escher traveled extensively through Italy, where he met his wife Jetta Umiker, whom he married in 1924. They settled in Rome, where they stayed until 1935. During that period, Escher traveled throughout Italy, drawing and sketching for the various prints he would make. M.C. Escher became fascinated by the regular Division of the Plane, when he first visited the Alhambra, a fourteen century Moorish castle in Granada, Spain in 1922. During his years in Switzerland and throughout the Second World War, he vigorously pursued this interest, drawing 62 of the total of 137 Regular Division Drawings he would make in his lifetime. He would extend his passion for the Regular Division of the Plane, by using some of his drawings as the basis for carving beech wood spheres. Escher played with architecture, perspective and impossible spaces. Today, his art continues to amaze and wonder millions of people all over the world. His work bridges the realms of abstract mathematical thinking and concrete visual representation; he shows us the “shape of space.” M.C. Escher also shows us that reality is wondrous, comprehensible and fascinating. We welcome The M.C. Escher Company B.V. to Artexpo New York 2011!
