NAME WELCOME TOEXHIBITOR THE 6TH ANNUAL ART SAN DIEGO BOOTH 123
This year, as always, you’ll find intriguing new works from local and regional talent and, thanks to RMG’s broad reach, a slate of international artists and galleries from as far away as Russia, Italy, Greece and Spain. We’re also hosting Art Spot International Art Fair—a “show within a show” featuring carefully selected modern, contemporary and cutting-edge galleries with a strong LatinAmerican emphasis. Art Spot is curated by Aldo Castillo, one of the most respected authorities on modern and contemporary Latin American Art. The theme of this year’s show is [inter.play], an exploration of the ways in which artists affect and reflect each other’s work, as well as the response evoked by the attending audience. A few highlights: check out our Art Labs programs this
year (more info on page 10), our emerging LaunchPad artist (read more on page 18) and of course, our amazing San Diego Art Prize winners (see who on page 19). We also have some compelling Art Talks lined up, and the full schedule is on page 8. Name / Title / Size / Medium
FEATURING: Name We’re so glad Artist you could join us for the 6th annual edition of ART SAN DIEGO. This year’s show marks the continuation of a well-established cultural event here in San Diego, but it’s also a new beginning. For the first time, Eric Smith, President of Redwood Media Group (RMG), has joined forces with us to expand the show and offer you an even broader scope of innovative new art.
At ART SAN DIEGO, we try to create an environment where contemporary art can commingle with public and performance exhibition. We seek out artists and galleries who will give guests food for thought. Many of our installations call upon the attendees to participate and interact, which creates a more immersive exhibition experience. We hope you enjoy this dynamic aspect of the show! We’d like to thank our generous sponsors, without whom this show would simply not be possible. And without further ado, we’ll leave you to see, explore, learn, interact and enjoy this year’s creative [inter.play]. Sincerely, Ann Berchtold - Show Founder & Director Address EricYour Smith - Show President Your City, State, Zipcode Country

THE GATES OF HECK
ARTISTS: Perry Vasquez with VJ Aaron McFarland CURATED BY: Perry Vasquez The Gates of Heck
Perry Vasquez will present his new work, The Gates of Heck, an audio-visual adaptation of Dante’s Inferno updated with contemporary references to comic books, rock ‘n’ roll music and immigrant crossing narratives. The work considers Hell as the ultimate borderland – a place where mortality and immortality collide and myth and reality come face to face. Collaborator Aaron McFarland will immerse the audience in his monumentally scaled video projections culled from diverse sources. Additional video editing by Farrah Emami will complete the show.

ART LAB 03
ARTISTS: John Reynolds, Patrick Cavanagh, Greg Smaller, Paradox, Daw-An Wu WSOHOIDPS / RHODOPSIN / 12’W’ x 28’L / Interactive Light Installation WSOHOIDPS (A SHIP IN THE WOODS) in collaboration with Salk neurobiologist John Reynolds, sound artist Greg Smaller (LABS), Paradox and Daw-An Wu team up for Rhodopsin, a light installation based on the research of Patrick Cavanagh, Laboratoire Psychologie de la Perception, Université Paris Descartes. Our perceptual experience is not the direct experience of the world around us. Rather, it is the result of a constructive process, in which the brain formulates an ongoing hypothesis about the external world. Visual perception transforms the two tiny movies that constantly dance across the retinal screens on the back of each eye into the rich world we feel we inhabit. Opsins are biological pigments that reside in the photoreceptor cells of the retina, the cells that are responsible for the first events in the perception of light. Rhodopsin is the most sensitive opsin. It resides in the 120 million rod photoreceptors that sit in each of our retinae, enabling us to see in low illumination. In this exhibit, a flash of light will expose the observer to an afterimage as we create very unusual sensory conditions that will allow observers to experience the unfolding process of perceptual construction, from the photoreceptors to conscious awareness. Participants will experience a series of rich visual percepts that emerge through the interplay that takes place between our proprioceptive bodily sense and a visual system that is activated in total darkness. info@shipinthewoods.com - www.shipinthewoods.com

César Vázquez and Claudia Ramírez have collectively developed a piece that reflects on the borders both physical and symbolic through the characters that are caught in flight. Clay Human figurines that express the sensation of liberty without trespassing the limits we are brought under, or the ones we build for ourselves. To live in Tijuana is a constant re-pondering of the imposed division. This time we pick up flight so that from above we can look at what happens when we are on one side, then the other, and across. Her original works unite art with nature through vibrant color and dynamic brushwork. Concetta’s Tetrachromatism opens up a new way of experiencing fine art—one that unites the fine art oil painting process with science. Through her eyes, the beauty of the world is transformed into one-of-a-kind art.
Concetta Antico / America’s Finest City’s Lights, San Diego / Oil on Canvas / 10×10
The “World’s First Authenticated Tetrachromat Artist”—Concetta Antico—hails from Australia. She possesses rare genetics that provide a 4th color vision receptor in her eyes. This powerful vision, combined with a lifetime of immersion in fine art as an instructor and artist, enables her to resolve up to 100 million more colors than those with regular vision.
Through various educational programs and her unique aesthetic, Concetta is teaching people to expand their awareness of art. Collectors all over the world covet Antico originals. Currently over 500 works reside in private collections.

KEVIN BOX
BOOTH 215 FEATURING: Kevin Box
Kevin Box’s work captures the delicate nature of paper in museum-quality metals. His subject matter is paper— figuratively, conceptually, abstract and philosophical. With a background in paper and printmaking, Kevin has always had a passion for paper. He begins by sculpting all his originals out of paper and has pioneered a technique for capturing all those delicate details in museum-quality bronze, aluminum and stainless steel, using the lost-wax casting process. Stainless steel is Kevin’s favorite metal to work with: “Stainless steel is the strongest of metals and enables us to balance and engineer dynamic compositions that wouldn’t be possible in bronze. Besides that it doesn’t oxidize or rust so it holds the paint finish longer. We finish all the work to look like paper again using paint, patina and powder coating for a durable, long-lasting finish for indoors and out.” Origami has become a prominent theme that Kevin has taken on because he says he believes in its metaphor; everything begins with the same blank page and the outcome is determined by what we choose to do with it. “The beauty of origami is that we can achieve incredibly detailed designs using a single uncut square and, after folding them, you can unfold them to reveal the matrix of

choices beneath the surface. I think that tells a profound story about what is really beneath the surface of all things we see.” Many of the works are designed to withstand the outdoors, the test of time, as well as fingertips. Please touch; Kevin invites you to explore the work in its physical form and discover the meaning of the work, the stories and ideas beneath the surface.
