WELCOME TO THE 4TH EDITION CONTEMPORARY ART FAIR
Over the last four years the Fair has seen tremendous growth, and has caught the attention of a diverse global audience, attracting over 15,000 visitors. The 4th Edition brings together San Diego’s vibrant arts community with some of the world’s finest galleries. The theme of ART SAN DIEGO 2012 is “NEW ART CITY” suggesting a new way of expressing the Art Fair. Re-location to Balboa Park gives us the opportunity to develop an urban compound both inside the venue and throughout the grounds of Balboa Park. This year, 60 exhibitors will present a world-class showcase of contemporary and modern works in a unique facility designed by famed local architect Rob Wellington Quigley. In 2012, ART SAN DIEGO (ASD) introduces a thoughtful and multifaceted approach to the planning, design, and the curation of the Fair’s public realm in order to unite people around a common spirit and provide a different way of experiencing the Art Fair and San Diego. This year’s highlights include many new works being displayed for the first time, an impressive line-up of modern and contemporary artists, promising debut of emerging artists with solo-projects. These independent exhibitions provide visitors the opportunity to meet the artists and discuss their curatorial statements. One of the most interesting programs of ART SAN DIEGO each year is the Spotlight + LaunchPad Program, which gives collectors a focused look at several cutting-edge emerging artists who will create a site-specific solo exhibition at the Fair in September. Spotlight Artists / Designers and LaunchPad Artist are selected by Curator Marcela Quiroz Luna. She states, “This year our selected array of Spotlights + LaunchPad Artists converge in various aesthetic interests that are crucial to understand the urban approach our 2012 edition sustains. Essentialist depictions, naked materialities, intimate forms of representation and a pensive manner of conveying the hidden narrative qualities of their subjects are some of the nerves that connect our featuring artists in a rather silent an unpretentious way.” Together with my ASD Team, I would like to thank all of our participating Galleries, Sponsors and Partners for being part of the 4th Edition of ART SAN DIEGO Contemporary Art Fair.
