WELCOME LETTER WELCOME TO THE 8TH ANNUAL ART SAN DIEGO Collectors, budding art enthusiasts, SoCal arts-and-culture devotees, and visitors from around the world, it’s time once again for a San Diegostyle celebration of the best the contemporary art world has to offer. We’re proud to present the eighth edition of Art San Diego, held in the gorgeous Balboa Park. Over 50 galleries and artists will be showcasing their work during this exciting four-day event. You can look forward to seeing up-and-coming talent, such as our LaunchPad Artist Stefani Byrd and San Diego Art Prize winners Shinpei Takeda and William Feeney, as well as established artists from every corner of the globe. From provocative Art Lab installations to exciting evening events, there’s something at Art San Diego to enliven the spirits of every attendee. Our Presenting Sponsor, UBS Financial Services, and Lead Media Sponsor, the San Diego Union-Tribune, deserve a special shout-out for making this all happen. We also want to send a huge thank you to all of our other sponsors, as well as to every single attendee who chose to make Art San Diego a highlight of their weekend. Every year, Art San Diego is given a theme that informs much of the show’s special programming. This year’s show theme is [THRESHOLD]: Standing at the precipice of what’s yet to come. Perched on the brink of something extraordinary, expansive, and ever evolving. We believe that art always takes us to the edge—of our own beliefs, of our comfort zones, of creative possibility. So we invite you to join us on the brink. Get ready to shed your assumptions and take in a marvelous display of artistic vision and innovation. We’ll meet you there! Sincerely,
Eric Smith President, Redwood Media Group

Built by volunteers from the San Diego Burning Man family at CoLab San Diego
LOCATION: CENTER COURT Design Lead: Ramiro Martinez, Jr. Electronics: Navjeet Sarna Fabrication Lead: Paul McCarthy Photography/Prompts: Arash Afshar Built by: Volunteers from the San Diego Burning Man family at CoLab San Diego Cabina Exuro offers a glimpse into the Burning Man culture. An audio recording booth built to document the conversations that will shape the next chapter of humanity, Cabina Exuro is a 10’ x 10’ x 10’ geodesic dome made out of electrical conduit coupled with custom 3D printed parts. This shape was chosen because of its spherical characteristics, which have been proven to withstand the dust storms out in Black Rock City, a temporary community erected in Nevada every year for Burning Man. Within this interactive Art Lab’s structure are a picture book, an audio recording interface, and a computer that plays recordings from Burning Man 2016.

LOCATION: FRONT PATIO Artist: Adrian Sierra Garcia Searching for Perfection is a dynamic light sculpture designed by Adrian Sierra Garcia, an artist, designer, and architect who creates immersive, large-scale, ephemeral environments. It radically displaces the viewer’s conception of time and space, transporting them into new, mesmerizing dimensions. The volumetric piece features a cluster of large red LED light tubes that radiate an endless array of dreamy light patterns. The intelligent lightsabers, originally designed for Garcia’s monumental interactive art installation, Of Two, on the Simone de Beauvoir footbridge in Paris (2012), have been exhibited in numerous places throughout Europe and the United States. www.adriansierragarcia.com

SAN DIEGO ART PRIZE The San Diego Art Prize is an annual cash and exhibition prize that spotlights established and emerging San Diego artists with outstanding achievements in the field of visual arts. Sponsors include San Diego Visual Arts Network, Art San Diego, and Athenaeum Music and Arts Library. This year’s San Diego Art Prize emerging artist recipients are William Feeney and Shinpei Takeda.
WILLIAM FEENEY
William Feeney / Why It’s So Difficult to be Tender When You’re a Boy / 2014 / wood, steel / 13 ½” x 3 ½” x 7”
William Feeney’s art is about questions. The place where things are exposed, negotiated, and solved. He occupies those taken-for-granted aspects of the narrative, and presents objects that speak to questions he has fixated on. The result is that his

SHINPEI TAKEDA
Shinpei Takeda / Shinpei Takeda AntiMonument / Nagasaki Art Museum / 2015 / Beta Decay 5 Ink on wool / PVC / 3m x 4m x 12m
Shinpei Takeda is a Japanese artist based in the Tijuana/ San Diego area and DĂźsseldorf, Germany. He uses a wide range of mediums exploring the memory of human violence, particularly via the narratives of those in exile. He has created large installations in different sites across the world based on his 8 years of investigations, interviewing over 60 atomic bomb survivors living in the North and South Americas. Takeda is also a founder and the creative director of the AJA Project, a nonprofit dedicated to working with resettled refugee children in San Diego using participatory photography.
