WELCOME LETTER
I
can remember when there were hardly any museums—let alone major art shows—in Miami. It was all beach, nightlife, and entertainment. Today, I am happy to say, art can now be added to that list. From the thriving Arts & Entertainment District to the creation of new year-round arts institutions, Miami has seen a remarkable explosion of the arts. In celebration of the most contemporary and extraordinary art from around the world and Miami’s sprawling art scene, we’re proud to present the seventh edition of Spectrum Miami. Every year, Spectrum Miami attracts tens of thousands of art aficionados, collectors, and industry buyers from all over the world to the heart of Miami’s Arts & Entertainment District to see sculpture, paintings, photography, glassworks, and more from over 175 exhibitors. This year’s special programs and exhibitions showcase the thriving art landscape of the city and are informed by the curatorial theme [FUSION]: the merging of artistic mediums, of exhibitors and collectors, and of the countless galleries and artists who come together to showcase their work. Over the next five days, you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy Art Talks with art-industry pros about collecting, meet innovative Spotlight Artists and an emerging LaunchPad Artist, talk with exhibiting artists and see them create works during Meet the Artist events and live art demonstrations, and scout out potential treasures to take home. This fusion of cutting-edge art and media, special events and programming, and live entertainment wouldn’t be possible without the generous support of our lead media sponsor, Florida Design. We also want to send a huge thank you to all our other sponsors and community partners and every single attendee who chose to be a part of one of the leading art shows during Miami Art Week. We couldn’t do it without you. Here’s to five days of sun, surf, and Spectrum Miami!
Sincerely, Eric Smith President, Redwood Media Group

SHOW SCHEDULE 2 p.m. MEET THE ARTIST/LIVE DEMONSTRATION: PAUL CHANG Paul Chang Fine Art, Booth S823 Initially inspired by the South American jungles of his youth, award-winning artist Paul Chang is continually inspired by nature. The color, forms, and composition that are all around us come together on his canvas. As he states: “I am my art. My art is me.” Watch as he creates his next masterwork. 2 p.m. ART TALK/LIVE DEMONSTRATION: ARTIST GUSTAVO FERNANDEZ Art Talk Stage, Booth 918, sponsored by Artblend Meet Venezuelan artist Gustavo Fernández, and learn how his graphic arts background drove him to become an artist. Working in three dimensions, Fernández creates a visual experience full of images, messages, and symbols that go beyond color. See his creative process unfold as he paints his next canvas. 3 p.m. MEET THE ARTIST: ROBERT PETERSON Robert Peterson Fine Art, Booth S1118 Robert Peterson was always a sketcher, but only through adversity did he become dedicated to a career as an artist. Self-taught, Peterson’s raw, almost instinctual and spontaneous works tell stories beyond the paint on the canvas. ART LABS ART LAB 1: OUR PATH
FRONT ENTRANCE Sculptor James West / Studio Wild West Beautiful. Haunting. Interactive. Dramatic. Spectacular. All words to describe Our Path, a monumental, contemporary outdoor sculpture delicately laced with intricate laser carvings celebrating the natural world. Each carving interacts with the environment through the use of positive and negative space—and with each of us as we pass through the sculpture. James West’s art is always intended to be read on many levels. With Our Path, viewers discover human footprints positioned in black near the sculpture’s base, evocative of man’s carbon footprint and of our great responsibility to Mother Earth. Some footprints are small, others large, representative of all humankind. Our Path is a thought-provoking piece, whose intention can be read on several levels, making us contemplate our place and impact in the world. It’s a stunning piece of ornamentation, with its massive steel arch spanning 32 feet and soaring over 11 feet in the air. Our Path invites attendees to contemplate their role in the world, with fusion and balance called to mind.

ART LAB 2: A WALK IN THE CLOUDS | UN PASEO POR LAS NUBES
REGISTRATION TENT Curated by Noor Blazekovic of Irreversible Projects with the support of Jane Hart of Lemon Sky Projects and Neil Gold of Galleria Farms One of the great challenges that people confront today is that we often feel untouched by the problems of others or global issues such as climate change, no matter if we could easily do something to help. We do not feel strongly enough that we are part of a global community, part of a larger we. With all of our access to the daily news, we often feel overwhelmed and disconnected, not empowered and poised for action. This is exactly where A Walk in the Clouds aims to make a difference. A Walk in the Clouds does not intend to show people what to do. Rather, it offers an unforgettable experience with an empowering message: Each of us is connected to the other through our body, mind, and spirit. A Walk in the Clouds hopes to make the world felt and, with these feelings, aims to spur thinking, engagement, and even action.

SPOTLIGHT ARTISTS ROBERT PETERSON
Booth S1118
Five years ago, Robert Peterson was a Goodyear production worker supporting his wife and three children. A health scare, $6 paint set and five years later, he’s emerging as one of the country’s most celebrated new artists and garnering an elite celebrity following, including Kevin Durant, Alicia Keys, and Miley Cyrus. Known for his color-saturated, spontaneous realism celebrity portraits, Peterson has painted everyone from John Lennon and Elvis Presley to Mike Tyson and Jackie Robinson. Earlier this year, he painted a striking mural of Oklahoma City Thunder’s Russell Westbrook on the side of Friendly Cleaners. “I woke up one day and was like, ‘I want to do a mural of Westbrook’ and found a place to do it and just started doing it,” he says. His most recent work includes Come as You Are (Kurt Cobain), inspired by the life and death of one of Peterson’s favorite bands and singers. “With this painting, I wanted to show the late singer sitting on a red chair holding a water gun in a relaxed state as he stares back into the eyes of those who see the painting,” Peterson says. Named the 2016 “Artist of the Year for Southwestern Oklahoma” by the Oklahoma Arts Council, Peterson made history by becoming the first African-American to hold that title in the state’s history. His work has been commissioned by Nike, Toni & Guy, and Sol Republic. caleblee81.com Contact: Robert Peterson ceorlpzw@yahoo.com

SHANNON DEFREITAS
Booth S1104
By day, Shannon DeFreitas is a Broward County, Florida, firefighter. By night, she’s the body-painting artist behind Deep in Paint. Using her love for art as a creative release from the day-to-day rigors of being a first responder, DeFreitas paints the bodies of her subjects and then collaborates with a photographer who photographs the bodies to create a unique abstract image full of color. Inspired by the colorful murals, urban graffiti, and funky art galleries in Wynwood, one of Miami’s most happening districts, DeFreitas creates works such as Night Warriors, which features four “Deep Dolls” dipped in paint, posing on railroad tracks in the Wynwood Arts District. DeFreitas not only sells canvas, acrylic, and photo prints of her artwork, but she also performs live interactive art shows. She also offers customized sessions where she works one on one with clients to choose the paint colors and photo shoot location and then creates a custom piece for them. “No photo shoot is the same,” she says. “Every art piece tells its own breathtaking story through movement and color.” deepinpaint.com Contact: Shannon DeFreitas shannonpdefreitas@gmail.com

SPOTLIGHT ARTISTS THOMAS WARGIN
Booth S1105
To view Thomas Wargin’s sculptures is to take a walk through his subconscious mind. Inspired by his imagination and childhood stories rather than specific styles and trends, Wargin creates bronze sculptures that are whimsical, unconventional, and mischievous. Driven by a passion for engineering, fine art, and design, Wargin is an ideas man. The artist-inventor uses a blend of old and new practices, often incorporating a mixture of materials, such as wood, stone, and glass, into the final pieces. Armed with a diverse array of skill sets and ideas, Wargin harnesses the energy and creativity of his soul in pieces such as Dream Confrontation, A Mind Split, and Masquerade Dance. Allowing his spontaneous creativity to take over when combining processes and materials, Wargin explores his medium beyond the end result. “I am a thinker, and my optimism lets me forsee beyond that which has already been seen,” he says. Wargin hopes his sculptures engage viewers and stimulate both their mind and their visual senses. “I want the viewer to go to a place that they can only dream of or hope to be part of,” Wargin says. “My goal is to create a unique art form that shares a seamless integration between the world around me and the human spirit.” Scattered Thoughts by Thomas Wargin

PAUL CHANG
Booth S823
Paul Chang started painting at a young age. Inspired by his surroundings in the luscious tropical country of Suriname, South America, Chang was only 11 years old when he won his first art competition. He went on to study at the Academy of Visual Arts and the Jan van Eyck Academy in the Netherlands, but it wasn’t until the early 1990s that he started exhibiting his work. Now based in Florida, Chang is still inspired by the nature that surrounds him. Known for his abstract impressionistic paintings, Chang uses acrylic on canvas to play with organic forms and color. Pieces such as Hatching Sea Turtles and Sea Horse capture both Chang and nature’s playfulness and creativity. “When the work is finished, it should breathe the air and spirit of nature,” he says. Chang’s most recent work includes his “Closeup” series, where he experiments with new ways to transform his emotions into ideas. “In ‘Closeup,’ I reflect on past works in pursuit of exciting new strokes and color fusions,” he says.

LAUNCHPAD ARTIST ALICIA RODRIGUEZ
BOOTH 802-A
Alicia Rodriguez currently lives and works in Hollywood, Florida. She was born in New York City in a multicultural, artistic family and was raised in Venezuela. Rodriguez graduated with a degree in architecture from the Central University of Venezuela and in fine arts from the Cristobal Rojas Visual Arts School, both in Caracas, Venezuela. Later, she worked at Atelier Delta d’ Architecture in Paris and studied gilding and glass mosaic restoration under a UNESCO program in Florence, Italy. Back in Venezuela, Rodriguez was a photography professor for the Nueva Esparta University graphic design school and also for the Villasmil De Leon Design Institute. She held the position as art director and photographer at various publicity and editorial companies while studying fuse glass with renowned artist Candido Millan at his studio. In recent years, Rodriguez moved to Florida and began to develop her career as a visual artist, also working in commissions for selected clients. While in Florida, she got involved with a nonprofit organization for children with special needs, La Ventana de Los Cielos, and gives art lessons to children. Recently, Rodriguez has been working at Studio 18 in Pembroke Pines, Florida, as a full-time artist creating fused glass, focusing her main artistic production on conceiving one-of-a-kind glass artworks. Artist Statement “After practicing with diverse media, now I’m in the stage of creating my art with fused glass. Water has been a constant subject in my life. That is why I try to find in the glass a resemblance with water, ice, and water creatures, merging the Florida water sites, such as the ocean and the Everglades, with the water sites of my past, the Orinoquia, the greatest concentration of rivers in the Amazon region of South America. In the themes for my contemporary glass pieces, I subtlety imply the history and the legends of the peoples that live today or inhabited in the past all these regions, especially the ones that reside closer to the water. My ambition is that the viewers can feel through my work a reflection of themselves and their inner essence. I believe that we all carry a genetic memory that, no matter nationality or upbringing, is the same. This genetic memory is exactly what is going to get the spectator to find him/her/self and to become part of the game.” Website: aliciaglassart.wixsite.com/mysite
