Fall 2022 5 ahead and put it on your calendar!

We are overjoyed to offer an awardwinning line-up of productions! It’s just one sensational show after another: Little Shop of Horrors, A Christmas Story: The Musical, Guess Who’s Coming for Dinner, and Jersey Boys! Once again, we are excited to produce five, fresh shows never before seen on the Arts Center stage. In fact, we are one of the first handful of theaters to acquire the rights to Jersey Boys, making our production the southeastern premiere!

Mark your calendars for a themed party that will knock your socks off! It’s called “Country & Cocktails,” two of my favorite things! It’s where ‘down-home fun meets an uptown vibe!’ You guessed it: that will be our event tagline! We invite you to feel comfortable dressing in theme as your favorite country-music star, or just come as you are! There will be live entertainment,

to fame as the caretaker of the succulent sensation. He nicknames the plant Audrey II (voiced by Bradford Christian and puppeted by Andy McCain), after his crush at the flower shop, Audrey (Elexis Morton), who is in an unhealthy relationship with the dastardly DDS Orin (Alex Ringler).

This year marks the musical’s 40th anniversary and we are delighted to be featuring it as our 27th season’s opener! Amazingly, the Arts Center has never before produced this gem, and we are thrilled to do so this fall!

|

Digging a little deeper, the mysterious, blood thirsty plant that nefariously breathes life into a failing skid row flower shop can also be seen as a cautionary tale about greed and ambition. Minor detail of the desire-for-world-domination aside, the show is infused with sweetness, vulnerability, and love.

Fall 2022 9

Arts Center’s Killer Season Opener

Together, along with many others behind the scenes, they have made Little Shop a BIG hit!

Shortly after displaying the plant in the flower shop window, Seymour is catapulted

Arts Center is that the creative team behind Little Shop of Horrors is entirely female, comprised of Director Whitaker Gannon, Musical Director Nissa Kahle, and Choreographer Ashley McManus.

Though you may think you’ve seen it before, the Arts Center’s production of Little Shop is fresh, new, and simply to die for!

You may have seen the film adaptation starring Rick Moranis, Ellen Greene, and Steve Martin, or one of the many iterations of Little Shop of Horrors onstage. No wonder: both the movie and the musical are beloved cult-classics. Ever since it premiered in 1982, Little Shop of Horrors has scared up legions of fans. The deviously delicious sci-fi musical comedy was created by the legendary team of Howard Ashman and Alan Menken (Little Mermaid, Beauty & the Beast, Aladdin).

The story is centered around a hapless floral assistant, Seymour Krelborn (Steven Klenk), who spends his days tending to sad little flowers as well as his wilting hope of better life beyond the skid row neighborhood he’s always known. Suddenly after a meteorologically unexpected “total eclipse of the sun,” Seymour stumbles upon a strange new breed of plant, an anthropomorphic cross between a Venus flytrap and an avocado.

This show is best suited for ages 13 and up, but many younger audiences will find this musical perfectly delightful! Note: the current Off-Broadway production has posted for ages 5 and up. Therefore, parental guidance is suggested.

Many of the show’s thrills owe much to Ashman and Menken’s catchy, clever score featuring 1960’s doowop-inflected tunes. The music is further enlivened by a terrific trio of so-called urchins (played by Briana Brooks, Mackenzie Meadows, and Brianna Javis), singing with supreme attitude and tight

.ANNOUNCING

The holiday timeslot brings a familyfriendly musical extravaganza, perfect for getting in the spirit of the season! Based on the classic holiday film by the same name, the Arts Center is delighted to produce A Christmas Story: The Musical (December 7–31. 2022)

The show was recently revived OffBroadway and won the 2020 Drama League, Outer Critics Circle and Drama Desk Awards for Best Musical Revival. This “wildly exuberant” show will make audiences laugh, scream, and give up gardening for good!

EXTRAORDINARY 2022-23 THEATER SEASON

The story surrounds the meek and mild Seymour, an assistant at a floral shop, who happens upon a strange plant, which he affectionately names “Audrey II” after his crush who also works at the shop. Little does he know that this strange and unusual plant will develop a soulful R&B voice, a wicked sense of humor, and an unquenchable thirst for human blood!

The story chronicles young and bespectacled Ralphie Parker as he schemes his way toward the holiday gift of his dreams. Meanwhile, an infamous leg lamp, outrageous pink bunny pajamas, a maniacal department store Santa, and a triple-dog-dare to lick a freezing flagpole are just a few of the distractions that stand between Ralphie and his Christmas wish.

Its successful Broadway run garnered three 2013 Tony Award nominations including Best Musical. A Christmas Story: The Musical has been hailed by The Associated Press as “a joyous Christmas miracle.”

THE ARTS CENTER’S

So many of you have asked for us to produce the show we are mounting for our winter timeframe. We are excited to bring you a fresh and relevant stage adaptation of the iconic film Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner (February 1–19, 2023).

A progressive white couple’s proud liberal sensibilities are put to the test when their daughter brings her black fiancé home to meet them. Blindsided by their daughter’s whirlwind romance, Matt and Christina Drayton quickly come to realize the difference between supporting a mixedrace couple in your newspaper and having

We are thrilled to announce the Arts Center’s upcoming Theater Season, running from September 2022 – August 2023. It’s an outstanding line-up of cult favorites and Broadway hits, offering something for everyone. All five productions are new to the Arts Center stage!

Fall kicks off our season with Little Shop of Horrors (September 28 – October 30, 2022), a delectable horror-comedy-rock musical featuring an electrifying score by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman.

Over a series of dinner parties, first dates, and thoughtful conversations, Robert attempts to understand the pros and cons of marriage and begins to make sense of his own persistent bachelorhood. Company is a mature, intelligent, and wildly funny look at relationship, vulnerability, and “being alive.”

With a nod to the songwriting legend Stephen Sondheim, who passed away earlier this year, the Arts Center is proud to produce one of his greatest musicals: Company (April 26 – May 28, 2023).

It’s the incredible journey of four guys bound by one dream – to make it to the top. Experience the electrifying performances that led them to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You,” “My Eyes Adored You” and more. A perfect summertime hit!

one in your family. But they’re surprised to find they aren’t the only ones with concerns about the match, and it’s not long before a multi-family clash of racial and generational differences sweep across the Draytons’ idyllic San Francisco terrace.

This classic is a witty and insightful reflection on two families confronted by their prejudices. With humor and insight, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner begins a conversation sure to continue at dinner tables long after the curtain comes down.

“Oh, what a night” you’ll have at the theater this summer as the Arts Center launches the regional premiere of the Tony Awardwinning blockbuster Jersey Boys (June 28 – August 20, 2023)!

The musical recently returned to Broadway and won five Tony Awards this season including Best Revival of a Musical.

With the songbook of this incredible group as its backdrop, Jersey Boys gets to the heart of the relationships of these four men – with a special focus on front-man Frankie Valli, the small kid with the big falsetto. The show also reveals how a code of honor learned in the streets of their native New Jersey got them through a multitude of challenges: gambling debts, family drama, and even Mafia threats.

Fall 2022 13

Company centers around New York bachelor, Robert. On the night of his 35th birthday, he struggles to think of a wish to make as he blows out his birthday candles. Surrounded by his married friends, Robert is uncertain whether he should simply be happy with his solitary lot in life or wish for his own romantic partner.

Paige has been at the Arts Center for almost five years, starting with Evita in 2018, her first show with us. For those of you who don’t know, props are considered anything movable onstage, distinct from the actors, scenery, costumes, and stage equipment.

Fall 2022 25

Meet STEFFENSPAIGE

Arts Center’s CEO and President Jeffrey Reeves sang Paige’s praises, saying, “Paige has such a wonderful attitude. She’s amazing at problem-solving, all while having a smile on her face.”

One of the brightest faces backstage belongs to our own Paige Steffens, Props Master, and we’d like you to get to know a little more about her!

Paige’s talents span the gamut – luckily for us here at the Arts Center. Originally from Maryland, she moved south and obtained dual degrees in Theatre Production Design and Theatre for Youth at East Carolina University. She was involved in theatre, both onstage and backstage, as early as middle school, and even remembers watching The Sound of Music on tv in a laundry basket when she was only “knee high to a duck.”

Meet

For Rock of Ages, she borrowed survey equipment for the real estate developer scenes, but had to create a jack hammer. “Jack hammers are inherently dangerous so we didn’t want one in the show, obviously. So I built a cage around a pogo stick!” Thus is the magic of theatre!

Paige has created more authentic shownewspapers than she can count, including one for Little Shop of Horrors, with headlines announcing a “Total Eclipse of the Sun” (see inset photo – yes, she made that!). For those of you further interested in her process, check out her video on the Arts Center YouTube channel explaining how to make a prop newspaper! It’s still garnering views and comments since airing two years ago!

When asked her favorite part about working at the Arts Center, she said, “I know it sounds cliché, but it really is collaboration and teamwork. We are all working together toward a common goal from makeideas, combineandindependentseeminglyentitiesdepartments.Weourworkandandtogetherweart!”

When asked about how she comes up with the props that we — the audience — see in the show, she explained, “Following production meetings, show research, and detailed planning, I either pull an existing item from our warehouse, borrow it, buy it, or, very often, build it.”

Her job as Props Master is creative, interesting, and often challenging. With Evita, Paige recalls one of her tasks was to find a casket, a necessary prop in the Andrew Lloyd Webber masterpiece. She had to call over two dozen funeral homes before finding one, and they donated it because, at one point, it had held someone’s ashes!

Set in 2008 in the American South, the opera tells the story of two cousins who struggle to keep property long owned by their family, despite continuing obstacles that put the ownership in jeopardy.

While doing research, Smith met with Dr. Emory and Emma Campbell, who served as consultants. The Campbells have both served on the Arts Center’s Board of Trustees and have instrumentalbeen in

EMORY CAMPBELL

“We spent the day together with Ms. Smith talking about all aspects of Gullah culture and Gullah people,” said Dr. Campbell. “And this story of issues with heirs’ property and land ownership has been told here many times.”

The Artistic Director of the Cincinnati Opera Evans Mirageas shared his thoughts on the opera: “Though Tracy would eventually create a wholly original story set in a nonspecific geographical location, both the creative team and those of us at Cincinnati Opera saw great value in better understanding Gullah culture and the earth that was part of its traditions. We traversed the rivers, marshes, and roads of a land full of beauty and still full of sorrow. We were changed forever by that experience,” said Mirageas. “It was an honor to have played a part in a project that did what only opera can do: tell a story on many levels, simultaneously, in different epochs, all the while beguiling the senses with beauty and challenging the heart and mind with a deep message.”

the preservation of the Gullah culture locally, nationally, and internationally. “Emory and Emma gave me the heart and spirit of lived experience, and love for their ancestors ... human history.” says Smith. “Those ancestors are still speaking to us today.”
