We here at the Arts Center are always delighted to welcome residents, newcomers, and annual visitors to our award-winning theater. Summer is a wonderful time to join us here at the Arts Center, escaping the heat while experiencing another time and place through the magic of live theatre! There’s nothing else like it! This summer, we’re transporting you back to the 1980s when big hair bands ruled the soundwaves and acid-washed jeans and shoulder pads reigned in fashion. Rock of Ages sizzles with the glorious excess of a decade, and we are so thrilled to produce this crazy-fun jukebox musical, on stage through August 14. On August 29, we bring you the comedy of quadruple-threat Paul Reiser. This man is in such high demand that, due to his rigorous filing schedule on shows like Stranger Things and The Kominsky Method, we have had to shift dates a few times, but we all know he’s well worth the wait. Then on Labor Day weekend (September 3&4), we will feature Purple Xperience, the ultimate Prince & The Revolution tribute starring Marshall Charloff, who toured with the legend himself.

When bright-eyed young hopeful Sherrie Christian, a small-town girl who wants to make it as an actress, arrives in town, she bumps into Drew, a Bourbon Room busboy with dreams of rock and roll stardom. Lovestruck Drew convinces Dennis to hire Sherrie, and the stage seems set for their romance. Yet when the Mayor of West Hollywood, persuaded by a couple of scheming German real estate developers, announces his intention to demolish the Bourbon Room and the entire gritty Sunset Strip, the stakes are raised. Dennis convinces rock god Stacee Jaxx to play the band’s last show at the Bourbon Room, hopeful that the money raised will stop the building from being demolished. But Stacee, a man of massive charisma and massive ego, shakes things up even more. With the beloved home of rock and roll being threatened with destruction, the rockers will do everything they can to save it, to keep the spirit of music alive. The musical’s electric score boasts a bevy of 80s rock anthems and power ballads including Bon Jovi’s “Wanted Dead or Alive,” Twisted Sister’s “We’re Not Gonna Take It,” Whitesnake’s “Here I Go Again,” Poison’s “Every Rose Has Its Thorn” and Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing,” and the list goes on! Rock of Ages opened on Broadway in April 2009 and played more than 2,300 performances, earning five Tony nominations including Best Musical. The show also enjoyed successful national and international tours and, in 2012, was turned into a major motion picture. In 2019, the Broadway musical recently celebrated its 10th anniversary and reprised the show in the Big Apple for a few months that same year. So, get ready to rock and roll all night … or at least until the curtain goes down.
ARTS CENTER’S ROCKIN’ SUMMER MUSICAL
Summer 2022 9
... And you will know with the Arts Center’s sizzling, high-energy summer production, Rock of Ages! It is 1987, and the fabled West Hollywood club, the Bourbon Room, is the sordid, vibrant heart of the Sunset Strip. The music venue has seen better days, but as run by chilled-out former rock impresario Dennis Dupree, it is the essence of rock and roll.

OnCenter Fall kicks off our season with Little Shop of Horrors (September 28 – October 30, 2022), a delectable horror-comedy-rock musical featuring an electrifying score by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman.
.ANNOUNCING
We are thrilled to announce the Arts Center’s upcoming Theater Season, running from September 2022 – August 2023. It’s an outstanding line-up of cult favorites and Broadway hits, offering something for everyone. All five productions are new to the Arts Center stage!
The story surrounds the meek and mild Seymour, an assistant at a floral shop, who happens upon a strange plant, which he affectionately names “Audrey II” after his crush who also works at the shop. Little does he know that this strange and unusual plant will develop a soulful R&B voice, a wicked sense of humor, and an unquenchable thirst for human blood!
The show was recently revived OffBroadway and won the 2020 Drama League, Outer Critics Circle and Drama Desk Awards for Best Musical Revival. This “wildly exuberant” show will make audiences laugh, scream, and give up gardening for good! The holiday timeslot brings a familyfriendly musical extravaganza, perfect for getting in the spirit of the season! Based on the classic holiday film by the same name, the Arts Center is delighted to produce A Christmas Story: The Musical (December 7–31. 2022)
So many of you have asked for us to produce the show we are mounting for our winter timeframe. We are excited to bring you a fresh and relevant stage adaptation of the iconic film Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner (February 1–19, 2023).
THE ARTS CENTER’S EXTRAORDINARY 2022-23 THEATER SEASON

The story chronicles young and bespectacled Ralphie Parker as he schemes his way toward the holiday gift of his dreams. Meanwhile, an infamous leg lamp, outrageous pink bunny pajamas, a maniacal department store Santa, and a triple-dog-dare to lick a freezing flagpole are just a few of the distractions that stand between Ralphie and his Christmas wish.
Its successful Broadway run garnered three 2013 Tony Award nominations including Best Musical. A Christmas Story: The Musical has been hailed by The Associated Press as “a joyous Christmas miracle.”

It’s the incredible journey of four guys bound by one dream – to make it to the top. Summer 2022 13 one in your family. But they’re surprised to find they aren’t the only ones with concerns about the match, and it’s not long before a multi-family clash of racial and generational differences sweep across the Draytons’ idyllic San Francisco terrace. This classic is a witty and insightful reflection on two families confronted by their prejudices. With humor and insight, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner begins a conversation sure to continue at dinner tables long after the curtain comes down.
The musical recently returned to Broadway and won five Tony Awards this season including Best Revival of a Musical.
Company centers around New York bachelor, Robert. On the night of his 35th birthday, he struggles to think of a wish to make as he blows out his birthday candles. Surrounded by his married friends, Robert is uncertain whether he should simply be happy with his solitary lot in life or wish for his own romantic partner. Over a series of dinner parties, first dates, and thoughtful conversations, Robert attempts to understand the pros and cons of marriage and begins to make sense of his own persistent bachelorhood. Company is a mature, intelligent, and wildly funny look at relationship, vulnerability, and “being alive.”

With a nod to the songwriting legend Stephen Sondheim, who passed away earlier this year, the Arts Center is proud to produce one of his greatest musicals: Company (May 3–28, 2023).
This musical-hit sensation centers around the Four Seasons – the rise, the struggles, and personal clashes, and the triumph of a group of friends whose music became symbolic of a generation ... and beloved by generations to follow! With the songbook of this incredible group as its backdrop, Jersey Boys gets to the heart of the relationships of these four men – with a special focus on front-man Frankie Valli, the small kid with the big falsetto. The show also reveals how a code of honor learned in the streets of their native New Jersey got them through a multitude of challenges: gambling debts, family drama, and even Mafia threats.

The week of June 14-18 featured the eighth annual Juneteenth Celebration, and each year, the party gets bigger and better.
The roster of events included a visit by Joe McGill, founder of the Slave Dwelling Project, a Civil War re-enactor, and a descendent of the enslaved, who has slept at over 90 sites in 18 states exploring extant slave dwellings. Joe also hosted the Camp Experience as part of the celebration.
The last day of the Juneteenth festivities offered art, make-and-take crafts zones, kids’ activities and food vendors, along with live music by the award-winning Voices of El Shaddai, and by the Infinity Band from WardAtlanta.say, “We’ve been fortunate that our Juneteenth Celebration has grown so much that it entices visitors to come to Hilton Head Island. Summer 2022 21 Summer is heating up with the Arts Center’s creative, action-packed lineup of camps! Campers ages 6 and up will dive into meaningful skill-building projects, not just crafts, fostering creativity all summer long. Visual and Performing Arts sessions include our one-of-a-kind Rock of Ages dance and drama camp. And we are proud to be offering our new Adaptive Performing Arts Camp, making the performing arts accessible to all. Summer sessions run through July 29.
Kicking off the Summer June 13-17 is Art Around the World, where campers get to “travel” across the globe by exploring the unique styles of an array of artists from different countries and cultures. For $145, kids ages 6-8 and 9-14 will be able to fill up their own portfolio passport with original art in a variety of mediums on this journey of creative expansion.
Take the Stage participants will enjoy a well-rounded musical experience, expanding on their music, dance and drama skills, culminating with a mini showcase on that final Friday. This camp is offered twice, June 27 - July 1 and again July 18-22, with each session offering two age groups (6-8 and 9-14). Running at the same time is Mixed-Up Masterpieces, where students will study folk and fine art forms that will inspire both traditional and unusual 2D and 3D artwork. Campers will show off their masterpieces in a final exhibit/reception held on Friday of that week. These camps can be taken individually in the morning or afternoon, or can be combined, to offer a full day experience (9:30am – 3:00pm for both camps). Each camp is $145 per session.
During our new Art with Amos: Sound Garden camp July 11-15, students ages 9-14 will have the unique opportunity to work alongside Lowcountry’s famous Amos Hummell. Drawing inspiration from his recent Sound Garden collection, campers will get to create media wall hangings using paint, wire, beads, modeling clay, and other fun embellishments. This camp is $145, but the experience is priceless! For campers eager to work both sides of their brain, Lowcountry STEAM is July 25-29. Students will learn about circuits, cardboard engineering, and even virtual reality with 3D painting as they engage in hands-on projects that reinforce Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) while creating Art (STEAM)! For ages 9-14, this camp is $175 Aspiring superstars will love our Rock of Ages Camp! For only $175, students will work with cast members from the Arts Center’s summer musical, learning a variety of dance and drama techniques from a pro, to take their abilities to the next level. This camp for students ages 11-18 with intermediate dance skills will be July 25-29. That same week, Art for All: Adaptive Performing Arts is available for independent campers ages 11-18 with mild to moderate developmental disabilities who want to enjoy a collaborative team building project by making a one-act play. This opportunity to build self-esteem and expand their love of theatre costs $175.
Pre-registration is required for all camps. To check availability, submit an online registration and pay tuition online at artshhi.com/camps or email Senior Director of Education Alana Adams at aadams@artshhi.com. Discounts are available for multiple family members attending the same camp and multiple camps attended in the same week. Students attending full-day camps should bring a sack-lunch, drink and snack.
The always-popular Theater Camp for kids ages 9-14 will be June 20-24 and again July 11-15. Campers will experience a mini-production and will “perform” as both the cast and the production crew. The young artists will learn how to write scripts, understand and develop characters, create sets, props, and design costumes. This camp is $330 and meets 9:30am–3:30pm.

Comedian, actor, television writer, author and musician Paul Reiser is one of Hollywood’s most prolific creatives with no signs of slowing down. Though the dates have had to shift a few times due to his exhausting filming schedule, the Arts Center is thrilled to welcome Paul Reiser to the Arts Center stage on August 29 for two shows at 4:00pm and 7:30pm. He will be well worth the wait! Reiser regularly performs standup at sold-out venues nationwide and was voted one of the “Top 100 Comedians of All Time” by Comedy Central. Currently, you can watch his acting talents shine in two hit shows for Netflix: Stranger Things as Dr. Sam Owens, in a role created by the Duffer Brothers specifically for Reiser, and in The Kominsky Method, for which he received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor. The multi-faceted actor also revived one of his definitive roles in the highlyanticipated return of Mad About You, the long-running hit 90s comedy Reiser co-created and starred in with Helen Hunt. The Emmy, Peabody, and Golden Globewinning comedy ended in May 1999 and premiered 20 years later as a limited series on Spectrum Originals. Additionally, Reiser joined Sam Rockwell and Michelle Williams in FX’s Emmynominated Fosse/Verdon. Recently, Reiser starred alongside Kevin Hart in the touching comedy Fatherhood, out on Netflix. Reiser’s first book, Couplehood, sold over two million copies and reached the number one spot on The New York Times’ bestsellers lists. His subsequent books, Babyhood and Familyhood, were bestsellers as well. Over the course of his career, Reiser has received multiple Emmy, Golden Globe, American Comedy Award and Screen Actors Guild nominations. Both stand-up shows are destined to sell out, so don’t wait to get tickets to see this legendary talent live and in person! Throughout that time, Brian wore many hats: scenic designer, lighting designer, co-designer with his wife Sabrinna, vice president of production, and above all, cherished friend. Even at a young age, Brian was drawn to creative endeavors. While his brothers and sisters played outside, Brian would stay indoors to work on art projects. His grandmother was an interior designer and seamstress, and Brian was endlessly fascinated with fabric and design, and even how different lighting changed the appearance of the fabric. His aunt was an influence for Brian’s career as well. In addition to being an interior designer, she owner and buyer of a large retail store. So while his outdoorsy siblings hunted and fished, Brian delved into design, wardrobe, lights, and more. At the Arts Center, Brian helped bring to life stories on stage with an impact that far outlived their production runs. Into each show, he would pour an unyielding amount of passion, creativity, and leadership, while uplifting the artists and collaborators around him to rise to the challenge and bring their best work as well. Brian and the rest of the team would give 110% for months, but, in the blink of an eye, as the audience gave a final standing ovation on a show’s closing day, we’d be on to the next production. Despite the fleeting nature of the stories we tell on stage – beautiful and powerful in their ephemerality – they endure in our collective memory.
This production of Rock of Ages is dedicated to Brian.
Brian’s life mirrors that analogy. It’s difficult not to feel like Brian’s own story ended way too soon. Those of us lucky enough to know Brian were invested in him as one of the best characters in our own stories. And, character he was, in the best possible sense: the guy with the wacky idea that ended up being the perfect solution to a challenging problem; the smart-talker who could make a hilarious comment at the most unexpected moment; the wise mentor who reminded others of their own artistic power; and the treasured, intuitive friend who always showed concern and caring. It’s nearly impossible to imagine Brian not playing all these roles in our lives, but that does not mean that the immeasurable impact he’s had on us ends because the curtain went down on his story. It will live on through our retelling of memories, our remembering the laughter, and continuing the pursuit of the highest bar of artistic excellence that Brian set. So together, we will continue to create works of theatre that would make him proud.
In Memoriam Brian C. Riley FEBRUARY 8, 1963 – MAY 26, 2022 A CHERISHED MEMBER OF THE ARTS CENTER FAMILY
Summer 2022 51 Brian Riley was a beloved member of the Arts Center family for over twenty years.

Patron Services Director Lyn Kaplan, who has the enjoyable task of getting to work closely with Sandy, said it well: “I think she’s creative, she thinks she’s merely crafty, but in reality, she’s both! “Sandy is one of the most organized people you will ever meet, and gives 110% to anything she gets involved with,” Lyn
impressive undertaking, Sandy recently published a book entitled “Perfect, Almost,” (published under Sandra Arch). She’s a woman of many talents! Currently, she’s on the Board of the Children’s Center and Hopeful Horizons as their Events Chair (as well as our Arts Center board). Prior to that, she served as a Trustee for the Wexford Charitable Foundation as their Events Chair for three years and on their Grants Committee
“There’s no one else like Sandy who not only has amazing ideas but also acts on them and then sees them through!”
Thank you, Sandy, for your generous time, talent, and undying support!
–Jeffrey Reeves, President & CEO
Onecontinued.wonders how she does it all! For over forty years, she worked in public education as a teacher, counselor, and administrator. Advocating for children is her lifelong Anotherpassion.

Congratulations on being the Arts Center’s Volunteer of the Year.
Volunteer of the Year for two years. Sandy has also been on the board of WAHHI as their Educational Scholarship Chair for two years. Devoted to her family and friends, she draws inspiration from her circle of loved ones, especially her three children, who have all grown into talented men. And, maybe it’s her New Orleans-area upbringing, but Sandy knows about fun and fabulous events to say the least! She is the Auction Chair of the Arts Center’s upcoming spring gala in 2023 (stay tuned for details) and was our Online Auction Chair earlier this year, which amassed some incredible auction items and experiences. Before that, she was at the helm of the Kinky Boots Season Opening Auction, which was another resounding success! This list goes on! Arts Center’s President & CEO Jeffrey Reeves stated, “There’s no one else like Sandy who not only has amazing ideas but also acts on them and then sees them through! The fact that she’s also a wonderful and hilarious person to be around is yet another bonus for all of us.”
54 OnCenter 2022 It was a unanimous vote among the Arts Center management that Sandy Berthelsen - board member, auction chair, bedazzlerbar-none, and creative mind extraordinaire – is the Arts Center’s Volunteer of the Year for our 21-22 Season!

Summer Camps are Underway!
The Summer Season of Arts Center camps kicked off with “Art Around the World,” led by award-winning instructor and artist Debi West. The campers had a fun-filled week “traveling” the world and exploring art from different cultures. From famous fine artists such as Claude Monet and Georgia O’Keefe to traditional art from Australia, Africa, and Asia, campers filed their portfolio passport with original art in a variety of mediums on this journey of authentic learning. For information on more camps this summer, visit page 21 to learn more!
