Early Childhood

Kids experiment with roller painting in Art Start

Early childhood classes are highly experimental and exploratory. Emphasizing discovery and spontaneity, these classes are an excellent way for toddlers and preschoolers to develop fine motor skills, problem-solving techniques, and pro-social behaviors such as respect for tools, self, and others. These developmentally-appropriate family classes are meant to support a child’s social, physical, and cognitive development through the exploration of art.

Kids’ Classes

Youth classes introduce students to the principles of art and design–the building blocks used to create a work of art. We focus on developing specific technical and artistic skills and knowledge. Our teaching and learning processes also promote critical thinking and problemsolving skills, as well as pro-social behaviors. We encourage students to apply these newly-learned skills, ideas and techniques, and produce work that reflects creative, higher-level thinking. Through art history, we expose students to different artistic points of view and encourage students to enter a dialogue about their experiences and take risks in their creativity.

VanGo

Outdoors Young artists sketch at Wychus Creek The Whychus Creek field study project is coordinated by the Upper Deschutes Watershed Council thanks to funding from the Roundhouse Foundation. In the Spring of 2012, in a collaborative partnership with Arts Central, the Watershed Council guided students to create a naturalist field guide about the Whychus Creek in Sisters. With support from an Oregon Arts Commission “Arts Builds Communities grant, students from Sisters Middle School worked with VanGo Teaching Artist Kyla Schoessler to draw and document stream-side native plants with observational drawing. This inter-disciplinary project connects art and science to provide awareness about Whychus watershed health. Artwork will be prepared for display in a public art exhibit, and for use in a printed field guide that will be distributed to community members and visitors. For more information on bringing VanGo programming to your community site or organization please contact Tracy Alexander, Art Station Manager, 541.617.1317.

Questions? Call 541.617.1317

What is VanGo? VanGo is a community outreach program that gives children in rural towns, with limited access to professional-level arts education, the ability to build skills in various art disciplines. VanGo, a colorfullydecorated Honda Element, is a mobile art studio complete with art instructor and supplies. With a strong art curriculum and teaching artists that foster a love and appreciation of the arts, students and their families can experience the benefits of high quality arts education. For youth at risk, VanGo provides arts programming to help support treatment and education, and introduce the joys and benefits of self-expression through art. VanGo can assist non-profit service agencies and community organizations with enhancing their programs for a stronger support system for youth in our region. To date, VanGo has traveled to 27 sites in three counties, reaching over 1600 underserved children and youth.

Currently an alliance of thirty-three non-profit and for-profit cultural organizations.

Guiding Principles

The alliance is unified under the following guiding principles: 1. Central Oregon’s creative economy and cultural industry is thriving and visible. 2. Central Oregon is known as a cultural destination (regionally, statewide, beyond). 3. The quality of life in our region is higher because of the presence of culture.

Why Are We Doing This?

Central Oregon faces some unique challenges. Unlike most communities in the state, there is no funding for arts and culture from our local governments. Additionally, cultural organizations have shrinking budgets, limited resources, and decreasing private sector funding. Nationwide, the answer is collaborations with initiatives being launched to increase the public’s personal interest and investment in culture and to address changing trends in arts and cultural attendance and consumption.

Purpose

To enhance the region’s arts and culture, we work with one voice to: 1. Elevate community involvement and commitment, 2. Attract financial support, and 3. Engage businesses and government as advocates.

Arts Central

541-633-7242 acinfo@artscentraloregon.org artscentraloregon.org

The Annual Kids’ Art Show features student artwork from summer classes at the Art Station. Artists from ages 2 to 17 participate in over 50 day camps and classes. Selected pieces are displayed where the public can see how these young artists interpret their world through drawing, painting, mixed-media collage, clay sculpture, wheel-thrown ceramics, and, new this summer, photography. The 2011 exhibit included over 100 pieces of art. Right: Piper (age 7) holds “Top Frog”, featured in the 2011 Kids’ Art Show, from the Large Colorful Painting day camp.

Arts Central, as the Regional Arts and Culture Council for Central Oregon, provides

arts services to the communities, artists and arts organizations in Deschutes, Jefferson and Crook counties. Arts Central receives support from the Oregon Arts Commission for these services. Our purpose is to inspire creativity through arts education and to advocate for integration of the arts in all aspects of community life in Central Oregon. We accomplish our purpose through four distinct initiatives: advocacy, arts education, public art, and cultural trust. We are able to provide arts education to our community through programs like Art Station, VanGo, and Artists in Schools residencies.

Thanks for the memories.

Arts Central called the historic Goodwillie Allen Rademacher house on Mirror Pond ”home” for the last 20 years.

ARTS CENTRAL

on the

MOVE

1992-2012

Positive change is taking place at Arts Central. We have moved our administrative offices from the former Mirror Pond Gallery space to 15 SW Colorado, Building II, Suite 100, Bend 97702. With this move, we are closer physically to our Art Station and closer symbolically to our arts education programs. From start to finish, we had a great 20-year run in the historic Goodwillie Allen Rademacher House. However, being the responsible stewards we are, caring for the home took a considerable amount of time and energy. We can now be much more focused on our dual mission of arts education and advocacy, as well as our stewardship of Bend’s historic train depot. Staff changes abound as well. We are extremely grateful for Heather McNally’s four years with us. We wish her well as she moves into a magical time of life as a new mother. Heather was responsible for overseeing a demanding revamp of our education program and launching our Pilot Learning Program of integrated arts learning in the schools. She leaves the program in great shape to transfer to the capable hands of Tracy Alexander, who has moved into the position of Art Station Manager. Tracy will oversee Art Station and VanGo operations and is assisted on site by Dawn Kirkpatrick. New on the scene is Gillian Rathbun, who will spearhead a vigorous outreach effort into the schools and coordinate the Artists in Schools program. Gillian has extensive experience as an art teacher in the Vermont and Colorado public school systems. 30

Changes have also occurred on the development and marketing side of the organization. Our former Development and Marketing Manager, John Negrau, departed Arts Central in February to pursue an opportunity in advertising. We wish John well. His position was restructured, and we welcome Debbie Butler as our new Development Manager. Debbie’s most recent development experience came as the Corporate Giving Manager for the High Desert Museum. Marketing has been outsourced to Tricycle Creative. Our new initiative, the Arts & Culture Alliance, is now 33 organizations strong. It has a combined annual expense budget of over $58 million that we invest back into the Central Oregon region, establishing arts and culture as a significant industry sector in this area. The group worked together to complete a comprehensive strategic plan, committee structure, and work plan. Very impressive work over the span of just one year! The staff joins Arts Central board President Paula Johanson, Treasurer Cacey Tangney, Secretary Brenda Komar, and board members Tammy Baney, Cindy Briggs, Gary Chandler, Richard Gallio, Steve Hultberg, Joanne Mathews, Marsha Stout, Aaron Switzer, and Rebecca Warner in thanking all our supporters. Thanks to you, we have money in the bank and the only debt we owe is to you, our volunteers, donors, and all people who understand the value of the arts. Please enjoy our programs. They are, after all, for you. Warmest Regards, Cate O’Hagan, Executive Director
