New Exhibition at The Undercroft, Norwich A new independent non-commercial exhibition - Asylum - organised and curated by the Russian artist Gennadiy Ivanov, brings together professional fine artists, youth sub-culture, graffiti artists and DJs, working in a variety of styles, directions and media at the Undercroft Gallery, Norwich. Running from August 12th to September 10th, painting, sculpture, installation, photography, video and graphics will interact with light and sound. Artists, philosophers, singers, poets, and scientists have been invited to work together in an exhibition large in volume, scope, scale and topics. Gennadiy Ivanov’s concept is a ‘labyrinth’ composed of asylum shelter rooms and as such meet the very highest standards of quality. Each exhibitor is invited to choose one of the shelters and join with other artists in the integration process. Several artists will work together on the theme of asylum in their chosen media to the scale of their choice whether in painting, drawing, sculpture, film, sound, and photography. Felixstowe's Art on the Prom One of the region’s calendar highlights, Art on the Prom, is returning to Felixstowe’s historic promenade on Sunday September 4th, 10am-4:30pm. Now in its 13th year, the free event is expected to draw over 20,000 visitors, offering the public the chance to view and purchase artwork from over 100 local artists, including jewellery, ceramics, paintings and photography. Contested Horizons: Salthouse Church From September 3rd-18th, Salthouse Church provides a stunning venue for the contemporary fine art exhibition Contested horizons. The exhibition is a response to an ever-changing horizon, expressed through a wide range of media from painting and drawings to sculpture and writing. Using landscape, seascape and mindscape – this exhibition explores how artists negotiate that sense of being when either displaced or rooted in the environment. All the artists exhibiting at Salthouse live and work in Norfolk and come together annually to exhibit, working to one mutually agreed theme in varying ways. Exhibiting artists include Rhona Fleming, Sarah Foyster, Claire Nelmes, Paul Vousden, Jane Weinle and Trevor Weinle.

Artist Profile: Rachael Long As a child Rachael Long dreamed of being an artist. But it was until her late 20s that her dream become a reality. ‘I studied art history at uni and then worked my way through a number of jobs - some creative, some not so,' says Rachael. Then, aged 27, she got a job as an assistant to a stone carver who was working on a big commission for York City Council. 'It was this that made me realised I desperately want to create things for a living,' says Rachael. But it was on a visit to see her family in her childhood home on a farm in Wreningham, near Wymondham, that Rachael finally found her niche. 'My brother decided to show me how to weld,' she recalls. 'He just gave me some scrap metal and told me to get on with it. From that moment on, I was hooked.' Excited, Rachael bought a welder for £50 and got to work making things from scrap metal. 'One of the first things I created was a swan made from two ploughshares and a point off of a springtime harrow,' says Rachael. 'When people started to buy my sculptures I was thrilled.'

'I had a postcard made of the stag in situ next to a pine forest on the estate - it was a beautiful image,' says Rachael. 'It wasn't long before that image caught people's imaginations and I started getting commissions from people all over the world. One friend even saw my postcard on the wall of a house in Australia!' Now Rachael works full time and has a constant stream of commissions to keep her busy. She is also a member of the prestigious Norwich 20 club and exhibits her work with them. 'We held an exhibition at The Oaksmere Hotel in Brome, on the Norfolk / Suffolk border earlier this year,' says Rachael. ‘I contributed a white rhino - based on the rhinos at Africa Alive in Kessingland, plus a Norfolk Black Turkey. Afterwards the hotel asked to borrow the sculptures and they are in situ there over the summer for people to come and take a look.' Rachael's work can also be seen at Banham Zoo (a Suffolk Punch horse), Strattons Hotel in Swaffham (a full-size red deer, two turkeys and three ravens) and outside Jeavons Wood Primary School in Cambourne, near Cambridge. 'I still work with scrap metal and love creating something new from it,' says Rachael. 'My work is very much about the negative spaces. There are lots of gaps and the minimalism is very important to me in trying to capture the essence of the animal.' So, what inspires and influences Rachael?

After taking a stall at the Highland Show, Rachael was asked to create a life-sized red deer stag for a deer farm in Fife. 'It was terrifying but pushed me to look closely at anatomy and skeletons to make sure the sculpture was a life-like as possible.' The resulting work was to catapult Rachael's career.

'My work is very much inspired by my upbringing and my passions as a child,' says Rachael. 'Growing up on a farm I was used to farm machinery and the bits and bobs lying about. I also loved archeology as a child - I once dug up a pig skull as an 8-year-old which I still have to this day! Q: You have always relished live performance, haven’t you?

A: Yes, I love live. I really enjoy playing with an audience. At book events, I do Q&As, and it’s often then that the madness starts. It often feels like an anarchic version of Question Time.

on September 4th. Here, we caught up with her before the show... Q: What prompted you to hit the road with your new tour, “LIVE! in Spectacles”? A: It’s a good time to look back on my life so far. I fully intend to live to the age of 92, so this is half-time. Essentially this tour is handing out the orange segments. Q: Tell us more. A: Writing a memoir begins a process that doesn’t necessarily end with publication. You begin to think about family life and stories and relationships, and those are ongoing. Once the book was published, I thought,“There is so much more still to say without necessarily writing another book. Why not animate the book with a live tour?” It’s like a companion volume, I guess. A big, technicolour puke of thoughts. Perhaps I should put that on the poster…

Q: What do you particularly like about interacting with the audience? A: It enriches me. Performing live challenges you to be more engaged. And the great thing is, each venue is completely different. What I have done lately has been TV-based, so I haven’t had the same feedback as I get live, and that’s what I love. I adore the raw surprise of someone asking a question you would never have expected. I love the spontaneity of it. I don’t encourage hecklers, but sometimes a heckler is the funniest person in the room - why not embrace that? The audience is a big pool of fun you can swim around in. But remember - no petting.

Q: You will be giving each ticket-holder a copy of your book, “Spectacles”. What’s the thinking behind that?

Q: You have a wonderful relationship with your fans. Do they frequently stop you in the street?

A: It gives me the opportunity to meet the whole audience one by one afterwards during the signings. A gig is a two-way street. It’s not about me broadcasting. It’s not,“This is what I’ve got to say about this.” It’s as much about how people respond to the material. My memoir is a story of family and childhood, and everyone has had one of those. Mine is not the definitive version of childhood, but it’s a great way to start a conversation. I love it when someone says,“It’s weird. I lived next to an electricity substation for 20 years as well.” Or, “We had a cat that dragged our turkey across the room at Christmas and we had to eat boiled eggs for our lunch instead.” The book is a recorded history of my life so far, but the tour brings extra stuff to it. The audience adds so much on top of that. It’s important to have that double act thing going on with them.

A: Sometimes, yes. Often they’ll want to ask about the weird things I’ve eaten. I’ve eaten everything. There’s nothing I haven’t eaten. I’ve eaten peacock, rat, squirrel, wigeon, teal, snipe, snake, moose and yak. Bear Grylls, eat your heart out! In fact, he probably has eaten his heart out…

Q: So what subjects will you be covering in the show?

A: I think the chemistry between the four of us – Mary, Paul, Mel and I – works so well. We’re all big kids at heart. We’re all very playful. We don’t approach it as a job. We approach it as a day out at a country fair! But the real reason why the show is so successful is the 12 people who come to bake every year. Although we four have received a lot of attention, I really do believe that the bakers are where the magic is.

A: Births, deaths, lemon drizzle and getting fondled by a Cambodian hermit. I’ll talk a lot about the catastrophising that went on in my family. There was always a sense that something awful, that imminent doom, was around the corner. It came from my mum – she’s a worrier. Everything was a potential trip to A & E!

Q: I believe you will also be showing some slides. A: Yes, there will be lots of slides. There is only one picture of me in the book and I have this horrific haircut in it. People say,“Surely that was just one bad haircut day.” But I’m afraid I have 150 slides of myself at different ages, all with the same haircut! My mum had someone round to cut my hair who, it transpired, had only done dog grooming before. So I had a low Dougal-style fringe that was perfectly straight. It swayed like a trimmed, bearded collie! A bowl for all seasons. Perhaps that should be the title of the second volume….

Q: What else do the fans ask you? A: They always want to know what Mary Berry is like. Well, Bez is the best. End of. She’s the nation’s sweetheart. I love her – so much so, I’ve been trying to get her to adopt me for the last seven years.

Q: Why do you think The Great British Bake Off has proved so popular?

Q: Finally, do you believe that a sense of humour is vital? A: Of course. Life is boring without the punctuation of punchlines. If you laugh at a joke, it’s because someone has put something you already know in a way you had never thought of before. You’ve always been aware of that idea, but it’s the expression of that idea that catches you. The other person encapsulates it or puts a new twist on it. It illuminates and cheers in one fell swoop. Award-winning Guitarist heads to Bury Guitar genius Chantel McGregor is heading back to The Apex, Bury St Edmunds on September 8th. A female guitar prodigy, at fourteen Chantel was told by major labels that she had a "great voice, but girls don't play guitar like that!" Wisely ignoring the comments, she enrolled at the Leeds College of Music and became the first student in the college’s history, to achieve a 100% pass mark, with 18 distinctions. When Chantel released her 2011 debut album, 'Like No Other', one critic said, "Chantel McGregor deserves to be held up as a messiah of blues-rock and given her own mountain. She doesn't strum or pick her guitar but almost bends and distorts it, as if she's channelling the ghost of Hendrix through her fingers. "In 2014, Chantel was voted by the British Blues Awards as Guitarist of the Year for the second consecutive year. Winning five awards in the last three years (including Young Artist of the Year and Female Vocalist of the Year) in competition with highly regarded peers, is something to be extremely proud of. A Colourful Farewell to Harleston's Swifts It might be mid-summer, but at the end of July and into early August, Harleston’s swifts, which scream in high-speed parties through the skies over the town, will leave on their long migrations to Africa. To bid the swifts a fond farewell, 33 flags made from the designs of African flag-coloured cut-out swifts have been displayed throughout the town. The coloured designs are based on more than 400 cut-out and decorated swifts made by each pupil in Harleston Primary school earlier in the year. The cut-outs were photographed, before being turned into a giant mobile, which is hanging in St John’s Church, Broad Street, Harleston.The photographs were then assembled into designs which were printed onto flags. To complete the display, another 40 African flags add vibrant colour to the street-scene. But the organisers, Harleston’s Future, have added a little challenge – some of the flags are odd-ones-out. While everyone enjoys the display, they can see if they can pick out which are not African Flags. The answer will be posted in the Bird’s Seen board under the Swan Hotel arch. 'We added a little twist, so individuals and family groups can enjoy seeing if they can spot the non-African flags”, said Ian Carstairs a volunteer for Harleston’s Future. ‘There’s no prize – just a challenge to see how well you know your flags.'
