‘I can still remember the picture I drew on my first day of infant school,’ says Christine McKechnie. ‘I’d cried all of the way there but the minute the teacher put a piece of paper and some pencils in my hand, I was happy.’ She may have come a long way since that picture of a house on a hill complete with curtains and flowers in the window, but Christine’s love for art is still just as transparent. ‘It’s been my passion and my work my whole life,’ she smiles. ‘I worked while I was bringing up my family and I still work hard today at the age of 74.’ Christine has painted in many mediums but today favours the creation of watercolour painted paper collages. ‘In the 1960s my husband and I moved to America,’ she recalls. ‘We had

command high prices. ‘When I’m working, I start with a drawing,’ says Christine. ‘Then I think about which colours I would like in the piece and paint the papers to match my idea. I then cut them out and layer them up until I get the effect I want.’ Inspiration can be found everywhere and anywhere. ‘I love landscapes but literally anything can spark my interest,’ says Christine. ‘From a beautiful tree or stunning view to someone hanging their washing out on a Venice street. Recently we were stuck in a hotel in the Czech Republic and all I could see from the window was a bleak scene but I still managed to find inspiration from some graffiti on a wall.’ Christine regularly exhibits her work throughout the region and further afield including at the Artworks exhibition at Blackthorpe Barn, near Bury

Regular readers of this magazine know that our region has a wealth of artistic talent and a thriving arts scene. One of the key outlets for that talent is Art Fair East, the annual contemporary art fair at St Andrew’s Hall, Norwich.

Now in its third year, Art Fair East has quickly become established as the go-to place to see and buy top quality art in the east of England. Combining local exhibitors with others from elsewhere in the UK and overseas, the annual event is creating a real buzz in and beyond the east of England. In fact, last year’s fair was

As successful artists themselves, both are passionate about getting more people interested in original contemporary art and helping artists to make a living. As Will says;
‘Because we select the exhibitors we can make sure there is a good variety of work that will appeal to different people and give an assurance of quality. All artwork is either one-off or limited edition.’ This year will again see dealers in fine art, modern art, urban and street art, photography and sculpture. London’s prestigious Underdog Gallery represent a hand-picked selection of modern artists and will be returning for the second time. Underdog Director Sammy Forway commented; ‘Art Fair East was a great way for us to create interest in our gallery and

artists outside London. We made several substantial sales and have had people who saw us at the Norwich event coming to London to buy work. We met a lot of talented artists and have worked with a couple of them on exhibitions since. All in all, it’s is a great way to break into the world of art fairs for galleries or individual artists and it’s a big bonus that it’s run by artists for artists!’ Brian Korteling added, ‘We aim to deliver the best the art-world has to offer to the Eastern region and introduce regional artists to a wider audience. It’s also satisfying when

artists are signed up by galleries as a result of being seen at the Fair.’ Suffolk based Val Bright-Jones is a first-time exhibitor. ‘I am thrilled to have been selected for Art Fair East 2017,’ she says. ‘This will be a wonderful opportunity to reach new audiences with my work and I am excited to be showing at a fair that has already exhibited international names like Banksy and Nando Kallweit. I plan on displaying paintings in oil and acrylic using water as my main inspiration.’ David Chedgey, best known simply as Chedgey, will be exhibiting and offering his
skills as a portrait painter for commission. The former lecturer has been painting and sculpting for over sixty years and has work in public and private collections worldwide. Maggi Hambling - New Paintings The celebrated East Anglian artist, Maggi Hambling, has been established over the last four decades as one of Britain’s most significant and controversial painters and sculptors – a restless creative spirit who is known for such diverse works as her paintings of George Melly for the National Portrait Gallery and creating Scallop, the monumental sculpture celebrating Benjamin Britten on Aldeburgh beach, recently voted one of the nation’s top 20 artworks of all time. This exhibition, Hambling’s third at The Corn Hall, Diss draws together selected themes from her recent work. She continues her acclaimed North Sea Paintings, inspired by the sea off her native Suffolk coast. ‘Whether the paintings are tiny or cover the studio wall, I try to translate the energy of a wave breaking in oil paint on canvas.’ Hambling’s self-portraits range from the large and quirky (National Portrait Gallery) to fierce images of self-examination. Her new 6 o’clock series is - the artist with malt whiskey –is, as ever, totally original. Hambling has never been afraid to confront major issues through her work – death, war and, recently, climate change. Her Edge paintings of melting ice-caps, shown for the first time at Marlborough Fine Art (London) in the spring, embody the fragility of our existence. Wells Maltings: Calling All Artists Artists with an East Anglian connection are invited to submit works for the exciting launch exhibition at the new Wells Maltings art space, opening Spring 2018. CONNECTION will bring together the best artists from across the East Anglian region to showcase the stunning new art space within the refurbished Maltings buildings on Staithe Street, Wells-next-the-Sea, and to form an important part of its opening season. Featuring 2-dimensional work in all mediums CONNECTION not only offers a unique opportunity for artists to show their work, but will also give visitors the chance to view and purchase work by artists at every level of their career, from new local talent in the community, to established figures. Norwich Film Festival – proudly supported by Norwich BID - is back and will be showcasing a selection of the best local, British and International short films. The line-up of 100 films will be screened from November 9th-19th. This year’s official selection of 70 short films features exceptional talent with Harry Potter actor, David Bradley in the charming, Edmund the Magnificent; War Horse star, Peter Mullan in gripping drama, Edith; and the wonderful Michelle Collins in the powerful Black Road. The spotlight will be placed on local filmmakers with The East Anglian Collection screening and a new

East Anglian Award which focuses on showcasing the best in film from Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire. This is just one of nine exciting shorts screenings including The Student Selection (Nov 18th) sponsored by Arnolds Keys, which features emerging film-makers and The Documentary Selection (Nov 19th) sponsored by Wex Photographic. Debuting this year is the Festival’s Industry Day (Nov 17th), designed to give new filmmakers all the information they need to break into the business. They will be welcoming guests to share their experiences including BAFTA winning

An East End Villain! One of the UK’s favourite soap actors Gillian Wright is leaving EastEnders and The Queen Vic pub behind this Christmas when she heads for Norwich and the Theatre Royal’s Sleeping Beauty pantomime. The EastEnders stalwart, who plays one of the BBC soap’s most memorable residents Jean Slater, will be appearing as the panto’s villain, The Dowager Aunt Vipera, from December 13th, 2017 to January 14th, 2018. She will be joining seasoned Theatre Royal panto comedy double-act Richard Gauntlett and Ben Langley (below) in the festive spectacular. Gillian has played Stacey Slater’s mum in EastEnders since she first joined the soap in December 2004. The Oak Circus Centre in central Norwich will be presenting three performances of their Dickens themed cabaret for all ages, A Christmas Circus Carol, from December 15th-17th. Inspired by Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, the show will give both children and adults from The Oaks’ popular circus courses the unique opportunity to perform alongside seasoned professionals from Norwich’s very own multinational Lost in Translation Circus company. It will also give a taster of the sort of skills people of all ages can learn at The Oak throughout the year. Lost in Translation are rapidly becoming established as one of the country’s leading and best-loved contemporary circus companies for their trademark warm humour combined with heart-stoppingly virtuosic skilful aerial and floor

First Acts Announced for Forest Live Gary Barlow is the first artist to be announced as part of Forest Live 2018, the annual summer concert series organised by the Forestry Commission and taking place, in this region, at Thetford Forest. Gary Barlow found worldwide fame as a member of British pop group Take That. Since forming in 1989 Take That have won eight BRIT awards, sold over 45 million records and over eight million concert tickets. Gary is also one of Britain’s most successful songwriters, having written 14 Number One singles as well as being a six-time recipient of an Ivor Novello Award. He will be appearing on June 8th 2018. SYM’s progressive range of music-making activities for Suffolk children and young people include Five Note Bands for pupils in the first year of instrumental learning through either the KS2 Whole Class Ensemble Teaching programme or group instrumental lessons, and Music Schools that offer ensemble activities up to about Grade 3. Young musicians are then encouraged to move on to Area Activities: youth orchestras, bands, jazz orchestras, string ensembles and choirs. A Choral Christmas
Award-winning Welsh male vocal group Only Men Aloud have announced a new Christmas tour and are heading to The Apex, Bury St Edmunds on December 20th to get us into the festive spirit.
Only Men Aloud have been delighting audiences around the world for well over fifteen years injecting new life and blood into the Welsh Male Voice Choir tradition. The men have become well known for their strong vocals and their varied and eclectic repertoire. A typical OMA concert will feature many different styles of music from Welsh hymns and folksongs, Opera and Music Theatre all the way to Swing and Pop music. Nearly ten years ago, they were named BBC Oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Last Choir Standing and this led to an album deal with Universal Records. In 2010, they won a Classical Brit
Award for Best Album of the Year. They have toured every year since winning the show, all around the world and have worldwide record sales of over 300,000. Over the years, the hugely popular group has built up a strong fan base across the country and were honoured to be asked to sing at the London 2012 Opening Ceremony at the very moment the Olympic Flame was lit. Ryan Holt may only be 23 but he has an entrepreneurial spirit honed since he was a youngster. The Lowestoft man is poised to start rehearsals for his third outing as producer and director of the popular Beccles pantomime, bringing with him a decade worth of experience in the world of theatre and creation. His work is so well-respected that Beccles Public Hall have already signed up his company SparkLive Pantomimes to present next year’s Christmas spectacular. Ryan’s foray into business began at the tender age of 12 when he set up his own design agency Spark Creative, designing leaflets, brochures and providing web design. He said; ‘I remember I was dealing with a business at the time who were really pleased with my work and told me that if ever I was down their way to drop in for a pint. That story really amused me as they hadn’t grasped my age. ‘I always knew that I wanted to run my own business and I didn’t want to have to rely on my parents, I wanted to get out there and do something myself. ‘When I was much younger I went to see my first pantomime Peter Pan at the Marina Theatre in Lowestoft. When we came out I was really quiet and they thought I hadn’t liked it, but it was actually the opposite - I loved it and realised it was something I could do.’ Since then Ryan, who by day is a graphic designer and print consultant at Blackwell Print, in Great Yarmouth, and a freelance marketing consultant, has starred in a range of pantomimes and musical theatre. He has won multiple awards for Entrepreneur of the Year and also made it to the final stages of casting for BBC show The Young Apprentice.
For the past eight years he has run The B&B Theatre Company with a group of friends giving anyone aged six to 24 a chance to perform in a stage show. ‘I do it on a voluntary basis, but I think it has also showed me how to turn my skills in theatre into a business. ‘When the Beccles Lido committee took over the Public Hall they did a survey and pantomime was something people said they really wanted to see, so I approached them with my idea and it has gone from there the dream was in the making. ‘My future aim is to secure larger theatres in the UK to hold multiple productions and employ producers and directors to work on behalf of SparkLive Pantomimes. ‘My inspiration is the theatre producer Cameron Mackintosh, he started around the same age as me and is now one of the biggest names in the business. ‘This year ticket sales for Robin Hood are the best ever, we are about four weeks ahead of where we were this time last year so we are certainly generating growth.I don’t think about what I’ve achieved so far as for me this is just the beginning.’ Robin Hood opens on Friday, December 22nd. Tickets are £10 for children and £12 for adults. Concessions are £11 and a family of four is £40.
