INTRODUCTION

Foreword By Doreen Collins

Dear Residents and Visitors Welcome to the 26th edition of the Diss Town Guide – a Guide designed to inform and promote our wonderful Market Town and the many attractions, facilities and businesses within its boundary. Since the last Guide we have lived through a very challenging time for us all with Covid19 leaving a lasting impact on residents, retailers and businesses. Positivity is gradually returning in the town and events are starting to be organised for the coming year including celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, the Carnival and the Organ Festival. New play equipment has been installed in the Park, the Tourist Information Centre has acquired a new purpose with an initiative to encourage new start up businesses and the Corn Hall is open again for your entertainment with plays, comedy, films and music concerts on offer. The Guide again includes all the information you may require for clubs and societies, local services, travel, health and welfare, tradesmen and much more and is provided free of charge to all households. The information contained within the Guide is as uptodate as possible to obtain and grateful thanks goes to the publishers and the Committee for their efforts in completing this process. the town. Flemish weavers came from across the Channel and for many centuries wool and linen were the chief industries. These continued to flourish throughout the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and many of the town’s historic buildings from the era remain intact, for example the Dolphin Inn in the Market Place and Fair Green houses. A focal point of the town through the years has been the Mere and in fact Diss gets its name from Dic or Disce which is Saxon for ditch of standing water. When a serious fire broke out in Mere Street in 1640, it was only the water from the lake, which covers five and a half acres, that saved the houses in

Diss Hospital c1905 Diss Hospital was formerly a young ladies school which was opened in 1862. It became a hospital at the turn of the century. It later became the Headquarters of the British Legion. It was demolished in the early 1960s to make way for a new Conservative Club named Grasmere.

Shelfanger Road c1909 Aldrich Bros Brush Factory erected an arch over Shelfanger Road at the crossroads with Sunnyside and Factory Lane to advertise the Royal Norfolk Show being held at Walcot Hall. Aldrich Bros at this period were rapidly expanding and were a major employer in Diss.

Market Place 1904 The Parish Church of St Mary’s dominates the town and the Market Place, being a fine example of 13th Century ecclesiastical architecture. In 1135 King Stephen granted the townspeople of Diss the right to hold a weekly market on a Friday and a fish market on Tuesday mornings. In this picture note the Dolphin Public House is still thatched, this being so until 1914 when its roof was tiled.

the R34 Adventure (2019). In 2014 the museum was behind the project to put the missing names on the war memorial. The museum is administered by a registered Charitable Trust. In 2019 Accreditation was awarded by the Arts Council. Accreditation is the UK standard for museums and galleries. It defines good practice and identifies agreed standards, thereby encouraging development, helping to guide museums to be the best they can be. The museum has won a Gulbenkian Award for the greatest improvements achieved with limited Photo - John Hutton, Diss Camera Club

Diss Museum is situated in the Market Place in a building called The Shambles, formerly two butchers' shops. There are a variety of displays, frequently changed, about the history of the town and area. Always on display are the Old Rectory Doll's House and old photos and jottings from the Memory Bank. Local firms like Cupiss, Aldrich, Anness and Gaze have all been featured. Panels in the windows depict significant characters and events from the town's past. Outreach activities include: talks to groups and schools, tours of the town (including a Murder Tour) and involvement in events like the Roydon Riots Centenary (1993), Skelton

resources. The Tom Paine Festival won the East of England Market Towns Culture Award and a Museums & Heritage Award for Excellence for the best project on a limited budget. The daytoday running of the museum is largely by volunteers. The Friends of Diss Museum provide stewards and financial support for special projects. The museum is open from 11am3pm every day from midMarch to the end of November. Admission is free. Museum postal address: 11 Market Hill, IP22 4JZ. Tel: 673613. Diss & District Woodturning Club A small, friendly club, with both male and female members, based in Redgrave. It has the use of an excellent workshop and has a fabulous Jet lathe capable of carrying out all types of turning, from the most intricate to quite literally tree trunks! All categories of woodturners are welcome, from the absolute beginner to the expert! Help and guidance is available for all to develop your turning technique, improve your designs or tackle that project you have always dreamed of! The club meets on the last Friday evening of the month at 7.30pm. Most meetings have a guest demonstrator to inspire members to tackle new or more ambitious projects plus a small number of allday demonstrations. Demonstrators vary from professional turners of international repute, to local professionals and talented amateurs from throughout East Anglia. We also try to include at least one social event each year. These have varied from BBQ lunches entertained by live jazz bands, to informal dinners in local pubs. The club is affiliated to the Association of Woodturners of Great Britain (AWGB). So if you would like the chance to enjoy the magic of turning a lump of wood into a really beautiful and useful object, please contact either John Plumb, Tel: 01953 681087 or Chris Davies, Tel: 898236.
