INTRODUCTION
Foreword By Beth Dewhurst
Dear Residents and Visitors On behalf of the Town Guide Committee and publisher I’d like to welcome you to the 24th edition of the Diss Town Guide. We hope you will find it informative and useful. It’s been an exciting era for Diss with the refurbishment of the Corn Hall and the completion of the Heritage Triangle, some of which we have tried to reflect in the photographs and artwork. There is also a look back to the past, recalling events in the town’s history. As always, the main aim of the guide is to provide information, which includes current details of local services, clubs and societies. In addition to this, our business directory and map have been updated and every effort has been made to ensure accuracy. We would also like to thank both Basil Abbott and the late Roland Buggey for all of their hard work on the Diss Town Guide in past years. Finally, I would like to thank the publisher, committee and all contributors for their skill and hard work.

Childhood Memories of Diss When I was recently approached to prepare

a short history of Diss for the new Town

Guide, I was aghast at how I could cram over 1000 years of recorded history into just a few paragraphs. Many of my predecessors in the Town Guide have written back into early history, of which much is already known, so I decided to write from my own particular perspective over the last 55 years or so of living in Diss.
Mandatory swimming classes were held in the cold outdoor pool when we were often saved by the rope, which pulled us into the side when we went under for the tenth time. The staccato piano lessons in Roydon Road with Mrs Pearce, were always softened by the pinball machine, table football, frothy coffees and soda bombs at Mr Mutty’s ‘Flash

great-grandparents and grandparents. In the 1960s, the gardens still extended in cultivated box hedge levels, down to the River Waveney, and much of the land to the east and north remained undeveloped. When we were young, we frequented the picture house, Rendezvous café and youth centre discos and it was still possible then to drive down Pump Hill and Mere Street in a pretty ropey Morris Marina or Ford Capri. The Toy Shop in Mere Street was a veritable Aladdin’s cave as was Cramphorn’s pet shop

We also stopped off at Outlaw and Revolution Records for LPs and singles, while our parents visited the numerous shops and bakeries that lined Mere Street, Pump Hill and St Nicholas Street. Most of these types of little shops were superseded in the 1980s by the likes of Fine Fare and International Stores. Those were the good old days we often hark back to. The days when we could buy a vimto, 10 Players cigarettes and a packet of
When I look back, it’s fair to say we enjoyed a different type of Diss then. A time of independence and blossoming youth to become the adults we are today, and many of us are still living locally. This, for me, is a testament to the survival of a small town. Retaining the past is necessary, so we can go forward into the future. Scouts
Scouting in Diss continues to thrive, with two Scout Groups and an Explorer Unit serving the local community. Scouting aims to develop young people, both male and female, mentally, physically, socially and spiritually by offering an attractive, exciting and challenging programme for them. Scouting can start at the age of six in the Beaver Section. From age 8 to 10 years six months they join the Cub Scout Section; and from that age to 15 years they belong to the Scout Section. The Explorer Unit offers adventurous activities for young people aged 14 to 18 years old. As they progress through the sections they become more responsible for organising their own activities and

RELIGION
Religion The Christian Churches of Diss In Roman times there was a local Christian community revealed by archaeological discoveries in the 1980s which uncovered burials in a Christian manner. A Roman style memorial was placed over some excavated Roman remains re-interred in Scole Churchyard. The local Christian witness has continued through Saxon, Norman, Medieval times, through to the present day. The 10 active Christian churches of the town, some large with choirs, organs and bands, and some small and contemplative, all meet to worship God in their own tradition and style. These churches support full time ministers, and lay workers and many have links with, and support churches in faraway parts of the world. However grand, modern or impressive church buildings are, the real Christian church in Diss is the people who meet together, to worship God and serve the needs of others. The varied activities are shown in each church section and activities range from pre-school playgroups, to groups for the retired, as well as fellowship and exploring the Christian faith. All the local churches welcome newcomers, including those who may just be on the start of their own spiritual journey.
formed through Diss and District Churches Together. On Good Friday local Christians meet at the Mere’s Mouth and following a short service, silently walk to St Mary’s Parish Church for an ecumenical service. Christian Aid lunches are held around local churches during Lent and enable local people to meet informally and support such a worthwhile cause. The Diss Christian Churches Together, support the Waveney Foodbank and can provide emergency assistance in desperate situations through “Samaritans Purse”, in conjunction with Diss CAB. Practical and prayer support is offered to those with special needs such as illness, bereavement and times of personal crisis. Each Christian church in Diss has an open invitation to partake of this valuable facility, which is freely available.
Roman Catholic Church The church of St Henry Morse is located at the north end of Shelfanger Road and backs onto Diss Cemetery with a pedestrian access. Mass times are Saturday 6pm and Sunday 9am. From humble beginnings in 1988 Able Taxis developed into one of the largest taxi operators in South Norfolk becoming a limited company in 2000. With the ever increasing cost of labour and red tape, and the owners wanting to take a step back, a restructuring became inevitable. This occurred in September 2017 when Able Taxis split from the parent company to once again become a small independent operator. The standard vehicles operated can seat from 1 to 4, 5 or 6 passengers, also available by working alongside other local reputable operators are 8 seater minibuses and wheelchair accessible vehicles, all vehicles are either hackney carriage or private hire licensed by South Norfolk District Council (SNSC) and all drivers are DBS checked and again licensed by SNDC. In addition to day to day local taxi services we also offer a courier service, transport to and from bus stations, train stations, airports, seaports, for weddings and nights out and hospitals including wait and return service.
