ABOUT US Greenock Arts Guild was established in 1946 for the benefit of the local community, to foster the development of the arts within the area and to provide a venue where the arts could flourish. Since its humble beginnings the ‘Guild, as it is affectionately known by many who frequent our building, has served Inverclyde well, promoting a wide range of artistic events including performances, classes, music concerts and exhibitions while providing facilities where local individuals and groups can pursue their artistic ambition. During the last 60 years the numbers using the Guild have grown to average 100,000 per year and amongst them have been many who have gone on to enjoy a successful career in the arts whether as performers, technicians, administrators or educators.

REDEVELOMENT UPDATE The Guild’s current premises are no longer fit for purpose, having started life as a swimming baths before conversion to its present form in the 1950s. An exciting project has been devised to create a new purpose built arts centre to replace our building and which will see us re-locate to the centre of Inverclyde. With the opening anticipated for the summer of 2012, the new arts centre will build on the impressive track record of Greenock Arts Guild which has been successfully delivering high quality arts in Inverclyde for over 60 years. It will be sited on a prime location of a former dockyard in Greenock, adjacent to the historic Georgian Custom House, with superb views over the River Clyde. The new building will form a key community focus as part of the wider regeneration of former industrial land along the Inverclyde waterfront. In November 2010 construction of the new building got underway and in the same week the Earl of Wessex in his role as patron of the new facility visited the site. He also attended a fundraising function, held in Greenock’s Custom House, in aid of the new arts centre where he met with members of the local community and in his capacity as Patron, announced that the new building will be known as The Beacon Arts Centre. HRH unveiled a commemorative artwork commissioned for the occasion from glass artist Alec Galloway. It will be placed in the new building for the opening in 2012.

The name, Beacon Arts Centre, has a strong association with the location of the new theatre since the Georgian lamp which sits in front of the Customhouse, is known as The Beacon and as such, was a guiding light for ships mooring at the quayside alongside which the arts centre is being built. The new building will house a 500 seat main auditorium together with a 130 seat studio theatre, three large rehearsal rooms and a riverside restaurant and bar with outstanding views over the Clyde. Thanks to the support of our funding partners, Creative Scotland, Inverclyde Council, Riverside Inverclyde and the Big Lottery we have achieved the target needed to ensure that our £10m project can be delivered. Many local individuals, friends and supporters of the Guild have also given generously. To all we say thank you. Our fundraising is ongoing to ensure that we can provide the best facility for the Inverclyde community. Please support us. Contact the Box Office for information on how you can contribute. Details are also available on our website.
