Every year Life: Full Colour runs an Open Show for Wales based artists to showcase their work. Since our first Open Show in 2020, we’ve met an array of talented creatives from all corners of Wales and built long term relationships.

Two artists who have entered our Open Show and now have work featured at the gallery regularly are Dermod Ruddock and Katy Bott.

Dermod is a contemporary artist known for his dynamic landscapes painted in oil, acrylic, or watercolour.

His paintings are inspired by light, colour, dramatic landscapes and the beauty of nature. He brings Mediterranean colours to the landscape to create wonderfully uplifting scenes that bring joy to the viewer.

Katy Bott lives in North Wales, caught between the sea and the mountains of Snowdonia, where she has been painting since 2019. Prior to pursuing painting full-time Katy worked as a garden designer, making connections between architecture and the external environment, organising outdoor space to a specific brief.

Now, walking on her own in the mountains or by the sea, she is inspired to capture the untamed rhythms in the lines of hills, the randomness of drystone walls, the revealing light, and the sky reflected in water.

Dermod says, “Lighting and colour are vital to me. It could be a storm over a Welsh bay, vibrant siesta time on a Greek island, or deep shadows as evening falls over the Northern English mountains.

“My influences include impressionists, expressionists, colourists – greats such as Cezanne, Kandinsky, de Vlaminck, Matisse, Peploe and Diebenkorn – each helping my work to leap off the canvas.”

Katy said, “I grew up in a city, but our family holidays were spent in the mountains of North Wales. I stood in awe of the mountains even as a small child. Now it is my back yard, and I am still overwhelmed by the majestic, lonely height of the hills and the knowledge of the ancient history that lies buried there.

“I use colour to attempt to convey something in addition to the pure visual form of the landscape - the joyous feeling of being alone in an untamed environment where all the senses are engaged. A true visual representation isn't enough, because in the experience there is so much more than that.”

Both Dermod and Katy are passionate about their art, and they share a deep connection to Wales which comes thoroughly strongly in their work. You can see their paintings at Life: Full Colour, 23-25 Hole in the Wall Street, Caernarfon. We’re open Wednesday to Saturday, 11am to 6pm.

I have always been inspired by the Welsh landscape, the wild seas of the north Pembrokeshire coast and the rugged profiles of the Brecon beacons. Colour is so important to me, building on colour theory of the french Fauves and the impressionist. I love using texture to create atmosphere.

Crickhowell open studios this year I will be at Venue 15 (The Trading Post cafe) on Saturday and Sunday. On Monday I will be joining the makers (venue 14) as well as selling my paintings at art fairs and galleries. I run workshops in my painting techniques.

Jo is a basketmaker and ecologist and is passionate about the natural environment.

Jo farmed on Bardsey Island for 11 years - it was during the long isolated winter months that she explored weaving with willow from the withy beds, which were traditionally used to make lobster pots. Jo now lives on mainland Llyn, and basket making is an important part of the rhythm of her life.

She loves using locally sourced materials to produce baskets that are useful, beautiful, sustainable and that reflect the coastal landscape, either through their shape, weave, or by incorporating shells, rope and driftwood.

Jo runs regular workshops throughout the year, visit her website for further details.

Brecon based photographer, Michael Hoskins, has spent over a decade photographing wildlife in all of its natural beauty. From a young age, he has always been in awe of nature and uses this as inspiration to capture photographs in the British Isles and beyond.

Countryside walks with his beloved Grandfather, Fred, ignited his passion for the natural world. These walks were not along the Avenue of Baobabs in Madagascar or on the banks of the Amazon river in Brazil, but in a quiet forested area, close to his childhood home, in South Wales.

Growing up in the Swansea Valley, Michael walked along the same paths and rivers as the influential naturalist, Alfred Russel Wallace. He has also visited many of the same countries, such as Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia. But rather than capturing specimens, he captures photographs and video of

the breathtaking creatures that live there.

Bluestone Gallery is delighted to have nine of Michael’s images showcasing a snapshot of Welsh wildlife, from the coastal habitat of Skomer Island to the woodlands of Bannau Brycheiniog and Anglesey.

Many of our members also run workshops, which you can discover more about on our website, or when you drop in – we usually open Tuesdays to Sundays, but for this bank holiday event we will be open Monday too!

If you have not been to us before, then you will find us in the historic Lulworth House, 30, Monk

Street, Abergavenny, a few meters up the road from St Mary’s Church and Tithe Barn, just opposite Gateway Church, and just a few doors up from the Gallery and Studios of our neighbour Louise Collis, who is also taking part.

Parking is very convenient; Market Street, bus station or Castle Street are close by. The Gallery is located in a beautiful old Georgian property, with a varied and fascinating history, and some stunning original features, especially the library cabinet!
